Gangs are the weeds in our com-munities – and they must be de-stroyed.

This is the reaction from the com-munity after Dan Plato, MEC forCommunity Safety, released the lat-est information receivedon the con-viction rate crisis on the Cape Flatsfrom the national government.

In his response to the informa-tion that he received he said that itsheds some light on why it appearsthat the gangsters are acting withimpunity.

While initially requesting infor-mation about Hanover Park, fur-ther investigation revealed thatcloser tohome inElsiesRiver, Bish-op Lavis and surrounding areas thestatistics were also disturbing.

“In June this year, as part of myoversight role over the South Afri-canPolice Service (SAPS) I request-ed information on the number ofsuccessful convictions in HanoverPark and other areas.

“The information I received wasshocking.

“Over a three year period zeroconvictions had been secured out of

87 cases of gang related murder andattempted murder in HanoverPark.

“My colleague in theNational As-sembly has now been informed bythe Minister of Justice and Consti-tutional Development that since2007/2008 until 2011/2012, out of 197cases of murder registered at thePhilippi police station (responsiblefor Hanover Park), there have onlybeen 35 convictions.

“This is a disastrous 17,7 % suc-cess ratio over five years.

“If one considers the convictionsagainst the number of prosecutionsfinalised it is only slightly better ata 25,3 %success ratio for convictingmurderers.

“This means that, to date, at least75 % of the murders in HanoverPark and the surrounding areahave gone unpunished!

“In Bishop Lavis the convictionrate is disturbingly less than 10 %over the last five years,” he said.

In total, over the past five years, for Hanover Park, Lavender Hill,Elsies River, Manenberg and Bish-op Lavis, SAPS referred 1 469 mur-der cases to the National Prosecut-ing Authority (NPA).

. From page 1.Of the 1 469 murders 921 prosecutions

were finalised, and 174 convictions were se-cured.

Thismeans that over a five-yearperiodon-ly 11,8 % of the murder cases have seensomeone convicted for their crimes.

While Plato has announced plans to bringup this conviction rate there are people inthe community who feel that the time hascome forhim to research the root of the prob-lem that has destroyed our communities.

“Plato has good intentions, but he mustlook at what started the rot,” said MohamedOckers, from Elsies River.

“I grewup inBellville South, lived inBish-op Lavis and know what I am talking aboutwhen I say that our communities were poorbut beautiful gardens where our childrenwere strong in their fight for a better life.

“All these communities produced strongleaders in business and other fields despitepoverty and unemployment.

“Yes, there was crime and some gangstersbut they were in the minority. If you goaround today they are in the majority.”

A friend of Ockers, Joey Ariefdien, fromBlue Downs, agreed with these sentimentspointing out that since the end of apartheid,

in the late 80s there had been a concerted ef-fort in pop culture to glamourise gangster-ism.

“When it started happening we knew thatsomething was wrong but we did not sayanything,” he said.

“The radios and television started push-ingmore gangster culture into the limelight, and it just kept growing out of control.

“Today we are seeing the results of thatbrainwashing and its effects are being feltin all communities. Its not just in the poorercommunities that the gangs have started op-erating.

“Our children do not understand the cul-ture that was the foundation for many of usfrom the ghettoes. We looked up to positiverole models in arts and culture, as well asin our neighbourhoods.

“Teachers, artists and other intellectualswere honoured and respected. Nowadaysour children are taught, through pop cul-ture, to sneer at these attributes.”

Ockers concluded by saying that our com-munities were still gardens where beautifulplants were waiting to flourish.

“The soil is still the same, like it was forall of us. Plato if you want to make a differ-ence take out the weeds by the roots.”

shelter, pointed out that although registeredwith the provincial Department of Social De-velopment as a transient shelter, which ineffect speaks of temporary housing of thehomeless, experience has taught them thatwhen you open your doors to the destitute, they are in fact responsible formaking a last-ing contribution to the life of that individualand as such Elim has become much morethan merely a transient shelter.“In 2012, as we celebrate the centre’s 15th

year, Elim proudly stands as a centre thattakes individuals through a holistic processof rehabilitationwith theultimate aimbeingthat of true and lasting re-integration of itsresidents back into society.“We have partnered with a number of or-

ganisations such as churches, clinics, reha-bilitation centres, neighbouring businesses, the City of Cape town and other shelters tothis end and today offer both in-house andout-house programmes aimed at both reha-

bilitation and re-integration,” he said.People come to Elim either directly off liv-

ing on the streets, through the referral offield workers, public intervention or refer-rals from other organisations.“Our initial assessment includes finding

out about the person’s origin as well as theircurrent situation,” he continued.“This then leads to a more intensive inter-

view with the social worker and a decisionis then taken on the way forward for that in-dividual.“The shelter also provides free assistance

with regards to job seeking, providing CVservices as well as utilising our businesspartners and internet job sites. We also havea number of in-house programmes whichaim to teach residents skills which will as-sist them to become self reliant.”Mesquita also pointed out that in order to

offer the services that are required to makean impact on these lives entrusted to themthey are very dependent on donations.“Financial donations are hard to come by

these days,” he said.“Food donations are utilised by the shelter

and any excess is shared with other organi-sations in the area such as Cravenby Centreand other non-funded organisations.“Donations are often received that cannot

be utilised by the shelter and in order to putthese donations to good use a second-handstore was opened.“The goods in the store are given free of

charge to residents in need and the balanceis sold to the general public.”The shelter is at 47, 3rdAvenue, ElsiesRiv-

er, and further information from 021 5912824, email [email protected].

Adult education received a boost with amajor donation last week.

The Elsies River Community LearningCentre in Leonsdale was very happy whenthey were contacted by the Business Devel-opment Unit and informed that the companywanted to donate desks, chairs and other of-fice equipment to the centre.

Taryn Speirs of the company explainedthat they were a corporate training collegefor working adults, who moved premises atthe end of August.

“When we moved we knew that we wantedto give this equipment to a needy school oreducation facility like this in the communi-ty,” she said.

“After contacting the department of educa-tion the centre in Elsies River was recom-mended and when we discovered what theywere doing in the community it was an easychoice for us.

“As a company that focuses on adult edu-cation we strongly believe in supporting theupliftment and development of the futuregeneration through initiatives like this,” shesaid.

Mike Pick, who heads the facility in ElsiesRiver, was overjoyed at the donation.

“We are happy that there are organisa-tions like this who believe in what we are do-ing in the community,” he said.

“This centre not only benefits the peopleof Elsies River but the surrounding areaslike Goodwood, Parow, Belhar and Bellville, where there are adults or youth who wantto further their education.”

Pick pointed out that in the education fieldthey concentrated on offering classes in theeducational field and skills training.

“We have facilities for youth in the areato complete their matric if they left schoolearly, but there is also basic education foradults in the community who did not havethe chance to attend school.

“These learners in the community providethe most heartwarming stories because youcannot describe the joy of a senior citizenreading a book or a letter for the first time.

“We also provide training in a number ofcrafts and construction skills because ouraim is also to fight unemployment in thecommunity,” he said.

Volgens Leon was hy geweldig geëerd toe

Forme themost terrible thing ofhaving been “blind” for an houror two, was the constant anxietyof being acutely aware of everysingle sound or shuffle behindme or next to me, and not know-ing what it was.

Howwould you experience blind-ness if given a slight glimpse intothe world of the visually disabled? This is exactly what the non-prof-

it organisation Blind SA, aims to dowith their annual Dinner in theDark, campaign, and the insightsgained by diners is startling. Thisyear’s event, hosted by the Cape Pe-ninsula branch, took place at theProtea Hotel on Saturday evening.Arriving in a dining room where

the lights were dimmed down to re-semble a late twilight, I at first feltcomfortable in the low light. As long as I have the flashlight on

my cellphone nearby, in case I hadto make a note or two. But where ismy cellphone?I opened my bag and started fid-

dling around for my phone in vain.A few seconds later I found myselfgripped in fear. Finally giving up, I stormed out

of the shadowy room and headedstraight for the bathroom, where I

successfully retrieved my elusivephone under the clinical brightlights. The realisation hits me like a

train in thenight: “Whatwould I do,if the lights are never switched onagain? This is the unfortunate reality for

nearly half a million people inSouth Africa currently and thenumbers are growing.

Blind SA is an organisation ofblind people for blind people, andaims to do whatever is necessary toimprove the quality of life of blindSouth Africans, to enable them toplay an active role in the socio-eco-nomic life of the country.“With this eventwenot only raise

funds to help our fellow blind, butalso to create awareness. We wantsociety to realise that we as blind

people have many capabilities,”said Veronica Vosloo, a fundraiserat Blind SA, who lives in Kraaifon-tein.According to André Vosloo,

chairman of the Peninsula branch, much disinformation still existsabout blind people.“A few decades ago blind people

were employed only as switchboardoperators, whereas today theywork in many fields from physio-therapy to the business world andinformation technology industry,”he said.Blind SA was established by

blind persons in 1946, during a timewhen blind people in South Africahad no opportunities and wasforced to advocate for themselves.“Back then blind people had no

jobs. They worked in workshopsand instead of receiving a salarythey were compensated in meals.Society needs to know that we asblind people can be an asset to thecommunity,” he said, an argumentthat was proved aptly when a groupof blindwaitrons entered thediningroom to serve the seeing diners, who then had to place blindfoldsover their eyes.Thewaitrons received a brief lay-

out of the room, ten minutes priorand dinner was served without asingle glitch.

The same cannot be said for thediners however. Finding the foodon your plate and then directingyour fork in the right direction, initself is rather challenging, provid-ing that the food stays on the fork. And you’re nothing but lucky

should you find your wine glass onthe table again for a swig of encour-agement.Apart from the obvious, the din-

ner conversationwas strikingly dif-ferent than usual. It was as if every-one at the table was suddenlyswitched on by a giant hand, genu-inely listening to the others with akeen sense of interest, as opposed tojust hearing the talker out, beforespitting out another non-conse-quential utterance. But as I slowly foundmybearings

in this dark world, one action at atime, there was one thing thatcaught my attention, genuine funand laughter. For the entire time that I kept the

blindfold on, my other senses wereacute and I “looked” at things, in analtered way, with a deeper insightperhaps. With half my dinner next to my

plate, and a table full of knockedover wine glasses, the significanceof the message is crystal clear.Blind people are more than capa-

ble of living a meaningful life.

Dinner in the Dark an eye opener

SAREL BURGER

liks as gevolg van swakkerige verdedigingmet 14-64 vasgeval teen Hamiltons.

Die komende naweek se program (tuis-span eerste) is: Belhar t Schotsche Kloof/Walmer, Tygerberg t Universiteit Kaapstad,Goodwood t Noordelikes/Northlink-kolle-ge, Bellville t Helderberg, Collegians tHands & Heart.
