Fires are destroying the festiveseason for some families in thearea, but there’s a call to helpthem.

This past weekend two wendyhouses were destroyed by fires inthe Bishop Lavis area, and in Bel-lville South some families were alsoaffected in Stilwaney Crescent.

In Bishop Lavis the Counsellingand Social Development Centre iscoming to the rescue of those affect-

ed and calling on the community toassist in bringing back some joyduring this festive season.

Ann Nero of the centre said thatthey felt the need to help these fami-lies because everything had beendestroyed.

“We felt that we cannot just standby and do nothing to help these peo-ple,” she said.

“There are also young childreninvolved and they have lost all theirclothes. We feel that this is a timefor the community to come togetherand help where they can because

this season is also a time for givingto those in need, and these peoplehave lost everything.

“We are calling on donations ofany kind that people feel will helpthe families that have been affect-ed,” she said.

In Bellville South there is also aneed for help and the communityhas already started helping out lo-cal councillor, Mercia Kleinsmith.

She said that at the time of the in-

cident her first priority was gettingshelter for these families and re-quested help from the Council whosupplied building starter sets forthe families as an emergency meas-ure, which is normal for such situa-tions.

However, her concerns went be-yond shelter and she felt that thereis a need to help these families withall they lost in the fires.

“It is important for us in the com-munity to come together duringthis season to show that we careabout the disadvantaged.

“I have already started getting insome donations from local busi-nesses but feel that there are morepeople who would like to assist uswith these people.

“Apart from clothes and non-per-ishable foods we would also wel-come donations of small applianc-es, like a broom and cleaning mate-rial to help them get back on theirfeet. Even toiletries,” she said.

Nabbed in stolen carTwo suspects who were found inside a sto-len motor vehicle were arrested by police onTuesday 29 November.

At about 09:30 two police officers drovepast a blue Volkswagen Jetta on the cornerof Dingle Road and Hugo Street in Good-wood. Police identified the vehicle as hav-ing been stolen in Elsies River.

The suspects appeared in the GoodwoodMagistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Last number bad luckPolice visits to second-hand dealers have ledto the recent arrest of two suspects for pos-session of presumed stolen property.

On such a visit in Goodwood on Monday21 November, two police officers cameacross two men selling a Blackberry cell-phone. One of the officers then took thephone and dialled the last number. The manwho answered confirmed it was stolen. Thesuspects were then arrested.

Criminals facing eight yearsThe courts have acted on some cases fromthe area.

Two criminals are facing stiff sentences af-ter good investigative work from BishopLavis police put them behind bars.

In the first case that relates to an incidentthat happened on Wednesday June 22, ayoung man faces a sentence of eight years forpossession of an illegal firearm and ammuni-tion.

At approximately 16:30 on the day of theincident W/O Roy Arries and Const ZolaDukiso received information about an illegalgun at a residence in Almond Street, Netreg.

During their search of the house theyfound a man sleeping in one of the rooms.

Further investigation revealed a gun andammunition under his pillow, which he ad-mitted was his, but he did not have a licencefor the weapon.

Det Const Jaco de Jager followed up on theincident which led to 24-year-old Kurt Seasreceiving a sentence of eight years’ impris-onment for possession of a firearm and pos-session of ammunition without licence.

In another case that related to an incidentthat happened on Monday 23 May anotheryoung man will also be spending eight yearsin jail for robbery with aggravating circum-stances.

At approximately 18:15 on the day of theincident Joseph Masevhe from Langa and afemale friend Palisa Kolokoto also from Lan-

ga were waiting for a train at Netreg Station.When Kolokoto’s phone rang and she an-

swered it, two men pointed guns at them androbbed them of their cellphones, and thenran away.

Masevhe then saw a security guard andasked for help, but they could not find thesuspects. While the complainant was stillwaiting for the train to arrive he noticed oneof the men who robbed them.

The security guard then arrested the manand called the police.

Further investigation by Det Const Jaco deJager led to Xavier Valentino, 21, from VaalRoad, Bishop Lavis receiving a sentence ofeight years’ imprisonment for robbery withaggravating circumstances.

Domestic workers wage increaseDESIREÉ RORKE

Domestic workers can look forward to anearly Christmas this year, thanks to a recentincrease in minimum wages by the depart-ment of labour.

As of 1 December, the minimum rate fora domestic worker in Cape Town for the nextthree years will be R8.34 per hour, R375.19per week and R1 625.70 per month.

In cases where the domestic worker worksfor fewer than 27 hours per week, the mini-mum wage is R9.85 per hour, R265.95 perweek and R1 152.32 per month. In smallermunicipalities the minimum wage is R7.06per hour, R317.62 per week and R1 376.25 permonth.

Although this eight percent increase some-what helps to ease poverty, experts believeit is still a long way off from doing away with

the current exploitation in this sector.“Even though the minimum wage has in-

creased it is still ridiculous that these work-ers are paid so little. These rates should beseen as the absolute minimum to be paid andnot as a general guideline,” said Bernard Re-isner, an independent labour consultant.

The minimum wage was laid down by la-bour minister Mildred Oliphant in terms ofthe Basic Conditions of Employment Act,which regulates this sector.

According to Reisner this minimum willbe enforced by labour inspectors doing rou-tine visits and can be made an order of courtin terms of the abovementioned legislation.

Reisner says that domestic workers acrossthe city are paid anything from R4 000 permonth to as little as R800 per month.

“In suburbs such as Constantia I havecome across domestic workers paid as much

asR4 000,whereas in lower incomeareas, thewage is the bare minimum,” he said.

A quick survey done in parts of the north-ern suburbs indicated an average wage of an-ythingbetweenR110 andR150perday,wheredomestic workers work only one or two daysfor a family.

Where they are employed full-time the av-erage wage is estimated around R2 500 toR3 000 per month, depending on whetherthey live in or not.

More and more families however opt forthe “piece job” system where domestic work-ers work only one or two days per week.

A sports event in Elsies River was aboutmore than sport when they marched againstcrime in the area.

Members of the Meltonians Soccer Club andparticipants in their soccer and netball tourna-ments took to the streets of Clarke Estate lastweek before the games began to show how sportcan play a part in fighting crime in the commu-nity.

The club hosted the tournament in Clarke Es-tate in memory of their former chairman, Ll-wellyn “Wakkie” Perrang, who died a few yearsago.

Marlon Fortuin, of the club, said that themarch and tournament was a great success asteams from the area came together in his memo-ry.

“Wakkie would have been proud of us as wecame together in his memory because he was al-ways passionate about making a difference inthe lives of our youth through sport,” he said.

“The day was a success because the march al-ready showed that many youth in our communi-ty were fed up with all the crime and gangster-ism in their communities.

“Through sport they can see that their livescan be positive and there is no place for criminalactivity for healthy communities.

“We want to thank the soccer clubs that tookpart in the spirit of sportsmanship: Red Devilsof Uitsig, Future Stars of Delft, and Dale RoadSpurt of Clarke Estate.

“The referees and management of all theteams, players and supporters all played theirpart in making this a fantastic event.

“The event was emotional but showed thatpositive heroes are never forgotten.”

Councillor helps with ‘red tape’GARY VAN DYK

A local councillor has launched a uniqueCommunity in Action campaign to helpsolve problems in Valhalla Park.

Nas Abrahams, councillor for Ward 14,which comprises Valhalla Park and sectionsof Bishop Lavis, recently conducted researchin the area that revealed many problems inthe area that were going unreported.

“It is not just here, but in all areas thatthere are a large percentage of our peoplestruggling to cope with their rent, rates andwater accounts.

“Many of them do not realise that The Cityof Cape Town has an indigent policy in placespecially for those who cannot afford to paytheir full instalments.

“Arrangements can be made at the localhousing offices in regard to these situationsbut I have discovered that our people do not

want to consult with the housing offices.“Many residents say that they are treated

badly and are being verbally abused by hous-ing officials. If any person has a complaintof this nature they have to report it to thecouncillors or subcouncil manager who willaddress the alleged complaint.

“Residents also said that complaintslodged regarding maintenance issues are notbeing addressed or take ages. Residents mustinsist on a reference number before theyleave the housing offices,” he said.

He continued that the purpose of the Com-munity in Action Campaign was to create anopportunity to lodge their complaints with-out fear and to interact with officials of theCity of Cape Town on a face to face basis.

“We hosted a very successful event at theBishop Lavis Community centre where thecommunity was invited to give their com-plaints to representatives of the various de-

partments of the Council.“One of the misconceptions that we have

discovered is that word is being spread in thecommunities that the Water ManagementDevices are a prepaid meter; it is not a pre-paid meter it is a device that controls howmuch water is being used. Arrears arescrapped completely if residents install aWater Management Device at their homes.

“The next campaign will be extended to allwards and areas in the near future. In themeantime residents must consult with thehousing offices if they have problems. Pleasedo not wait until it is too late.”

Plans are under way for children in Blik-kiesdorp in Delft to get a new playground inthe new year, thanks to two young girls inSydney Australia, wanting to make a differ-ence.

Sisters Chelsea, 9, and Charlotte, 5, Sandys-Silakivai, whose maternal grandparents areoriginally from South Africa, have becomeambassadors for the project in Sydney toraise money for the playground.

Lee Warren of the Blikkiesdorp 4 Hopeproject in the area was ecstatic when the sto-ryof their projectswas carriedonourwebsite(TygerBurger, November 16).

“We have seen the power of the world wideweb, and Facebook working for positivity,”she said.

“The children’s grandmother, Beryl Seg-ers, got in touch with me after seeing the arti-cle and the next thing they were offering toassist us.

“It seems like it is going to be a family affairbecause her cousin Janine Kelly from RL Ar-chitects, who designed the Green Point Park,will be designing the playground for ourbeautiful children of Blikkiesdorp,” she said.

Segers is no stranger to maintaining tieswith charities in her home town. She regular-ly invites entertainers from South Africa toperform at concerts in Australia to raisefunds for local SA charities.

This time around her grand-daughters

were way ahead of her when they saw the con-ditions for children in Blikkiesdorp.

“It is no accident that Chelsea has alreadybecome quite aware of her social responsibil-ity. When she was four she became the young-est child in Australia to receive a braveryaward for coming to her mother’s rescuewhen she found her unconscious on the floorat home.

“She also became the Young Citizen of theYear and gets invited to Australia Day din-ners by our local council and other events.

“Along with her younger sister Charlottethey are ambassadors to raise funds for thisproject, and making people aware of how theycan help with projects like this.

“They are already actively involved in rais-ing funds for a mother and baby clinic in Bali.

“When they saw the playground photos onthe website, they were so moved and said wemust help the children to have a beautifulplayground. When they go to their favouriteplaygrounds they make suggestions as towhat would be good and have come up withideas based on their school playground,snakes and ladders, chess boards and hop-scotch – all painted on the concrete, and theywant it for those children in Delft.

“I still have strong roots in Cape Town sogot in touch with my cousin from the archi-tectural company, and they’re also helping.Just shows you the world has become a vil-lage with all this internet technology,” shesaid.

‘Time for change’The Bishop Lavis SAPS Cluster is playingtheir part in creating awareness aroundthe 16 Days of Activism against abuse ofWomen and Children.

They delivered messages of hope to thewomen and children at roadblocks, on over-head bridges, stop streets, in streets and attraffic lights on November 25, 28, and 29.

Pamphlets were distributed, speecheswere delivered and sports games wereplayed.

Important advice on how to deal with sexu-al and domestic violence was also given tothe community. Capt Marie Louw, commu-nications officer for Bishop Lavis SAPS add-ed that the message also went out that crimesmust be reported to the police.

“A lot has been done to empower women

and children but more could be done if peo-ple reported transgressions to us,” she said.

Another highlight of the awareness cam-paign was the group of torch-bearing policeofficers, runners and cyclists who ran andcycled from Simon’s Town to Philippi.

While on the road they delivered speechesalong the routes, at Standfontein and Mui-zenberg, while other runners and cyclists al-so ran and cycled in relay from Vredendal,Beaufort West and George to Cape Town andarrived at Philippi Stadium for the officiallaunch of the 16 Days of Activism.

“This was done under the banner of ‘Menfor Change’ to spread awareness about theplight of vulnerable women and children.They brought the torch of hope to everyawareness event held by the SAPS along theroad,” concluded Louw.

SchoolcelebratesAids DayJS Klopper Primary is playing a positiverole in the fight against Aids.

As part of the school’s continued effortsto impact positively on the broader commu-nity of Elsies River, JS Klopper PrimarySchool celebrated World Aids Day on 1 De-cember, with representatives from variousorganisations.

This event also culminated in the school’sAnnual Awards Ceremony which was a con-tinuation of the theme.

The day started with a special assemblywith various guest speakers including Li-onel Hendricks who is a well known commu-nity HIV/Aids facilitator, Tanya Stevensonwho represents Special Life Hospice in El-sies River and Ida Mgumale, an HIV/Aidsactivist who flew in especially from Johan-nesburg to address the event. Various itemsof song, poetry and dance were performedby the learners.

The special assembly, co-ordinated by ed-ucator Paul Mashonga, was concluded withthe handing over of cartons filled with non-perishable food items, collected by the learn-ers and their parents during November, toassist Special Life Hospice in caring for peo-ple who are in the very final stages of Aidsrelated infections.

The hospice was also the beneficiary of alldonations collected at the entrance of theAwards Ceremony held at the AdriaanseHall in Clarke’s Estate.

In her address, keynote speaker, a formerlearner of the school Dr Mawadda Cassiem-Majal, raised in Clarke’s Estate and still aresident of Elsies River, gave hope to learn-ers and parents that all can rise above cir-cumstances of poverty, not only in academicterms but also in addressing issues of healthand specifically HIV/Aids.

Emile February, the principal, said thatthe school intends to become a beacon oflight not only in Elsies River, but also thewhole of the Cape Flats.

“We invite all our parents and the wholecommunity to support the school in all ourendeavours in 2012. Uplifting our school up-lifts our entire community.”

The Cultural Collective in Leons-dale has begun activities to curbcrime.

In response to the need for cultur-al organisations to get together tofight crime, the Dumela Founda-tion has been formed under the aus-pices and help of the PerformingArts Network of South Africa (PAN-SA).

Ricardo Speelman, of Dumela,said that they hosted a variety con-cert and Miss Leonsdale Pageant inthe area recently in conjunction

with PANSA and the Rasta Beat or-ganisation.

“This initiative actually camefrom Shante Harker, a young learn-er from Elswood Secondary in thearea.

“She is working on starting amodelling programme in the areawhich will be part of our project toeliminate substance abuse andteenage pregnancy.

“This event was the start of big-ger things to come for the youth inour community as we strive to givethem resources for the positive tal-ents that they have.

“Many of them give up on the tal-

ents that they have when they seeno future in it, and they can fall intothe trap of drug abuse and othercriminal activities if those talentsare not nurtured.

“The time has come for us to joinhands to put these talents to gooduse, and for this purpose we wantto form the New Elsies River Arts(NERA) organisation to get theseresources in place,” he said.

Cracker ofan XmasWhile things always go better with Coca-Cola, this year it will be bringing someChristmas cheer to children at a commu-nity centre in Elsies River.

This year the bottlers of the popular re-freshment, the Peninsula Beverage Compa-ny (Pty) Ltd and the V&A Waterfront havejoined forces to bring Christmas cheer tochildren in less fortunate areas and are call-ing on the public to support their initiative.

In a creative approach to a Christmas toydrive, a large branded Christmas Cracker,measuring 1.5 by 6metres,will be positionedat the Wheel of Excellence in the Waterfrontuntil Friday 9 December.

Visitors are encouraged to bring alongtoys which they can donated by placingthem through a shoe box-sized slot in thecracker.

All the toys collected during this time willbe donated to the Tehillah Community Cen-tre in Elsies River.

The centre renders a holistic service topeople facing socio-economic challenged sit-uations such as poverty, unemployment, TBand HIV/Aids. It also provides TB and HIV/Aids preventative programmes and an opendoor to victims of abuse, especially womenand children. They also run various youthdevelopment outreach programmes in thecommunity.

There are currently 101 children housedat Tehillah who would benefit greatly fromsome Christmas cheer.

Chantelle Kidd, marketing executive atthe V&A Waterfront said that they werehonoured to support such an initiative.

“The giant cracker fittingly joins theCrate Man at the Waterfront this year andwe are privileged and honoured to supportan initiative that will benefit the communi-ty in which we operate directly and gladlygive the cracker pride of place at the heartof the V&A Waterfront’s most highly visibleand visited area,” she said.

“We look forward to giving each child atTehillah Community Centre their own per-sonalised gift this year at a Christmas partythat will be sponsored by PenBev,” saysDenise Green, corporate social responsibili-ty manager for the company.

The ‘boards’ beckonBonteheuwel kids aregetting the acting bugthanks to a drama studioin the area.

Children from the dramastudio of the HelenO’Grady Drama Academyin the area recently per-formed spectacular playsin their annual produc-tions at the Theatre in theDistrict in Cape Town.

The lower primary classof children, aged five toeight, started with the playThe Emperor and theNightingale.

With magical Chinesecostumes and carefullychoreographed move-ments, these young chil-dren really showed howthey were able to bring thelife and colour of this storyto the stage.

The children sang theirsongs and danced theirhearts out telling how the nightin-gale’s song was best sung in the for-est.

Following this the upper primaryclass performed in the classic storyof The Pied Piper of Hamelin, andthey demonstrated the skills theyhave developed over the year in per-formance arts and their natural con-fidence on stage.

The Youth Theatre is made up ofstudents from high schools and theyalways end the evening with a chal-lenging piece.

This year the students put on aplay which required them to act inthe Agatha Christie genre of murder

mystery called Murder at Morning-ton Manor.

The audience was left to figure outfor themselves who the murdererwas in the end. Much of the actingwas based on the British class sys-tem and the youth theatre actors re-ally brought this to the fore, withprecise character acting and authen-tic accents.

The evening ended with the princi-pal of the academy, Duncan Rice,presenting the students with theircertificates and trophies.

The academy has its own versionof the Oscars where the childrenmake short speeches after their

awards.Rice said that this was a wonderful

year for the academy.“The Cape Town Academy has

now grown to be one of the world’slargest community-based dramaschools in the world and I am sopleased that so many children arelearning to be confident speakersand creative performers.

“It is our aim to nurture all ourchildren. No one is just a tree in ourproductions, everyone has a mainpart to play, that is why we say eve-ryone is a star in our school.”

Joining fight against violence, abuseGARY VAN DYK

The ladies’ fitness club in Bonte-heuwel are fit to fight againstwomen and child abuse.

Last week the Bonteheuwel La-dies Walking for Health and Fitnessdid their bit for the 16 Days of Activ-ism against Women and ChildAbuse when they hosted an event at

the Bonteheuwel Civic Centre.Soraya Salie of the club said that

they hosted the event to let womenknow that they must break the si-lence of domestic violence.

“It is importantthat women andchildren in ourcommunities areprotected fromabuse,” she said.

“More impor-tantly they must beaware of the re-sources availableto them if they areabused because wecannot allow theperpetrators ofthis violence to gounpunished.

“A major part ofthis event was alist of speakerswho could givefirst-hand experi-ence of some of thesuffering thatwomen and chil-dren have en-dured, but mostimportantly howthey won theirfight against thisabuse.”

Salie also addedthat while there

were many serious topics at theevent there was also some celebra-tion as the choirs of various sen-iors’ clubs added to the entertain-ment with song, but the highlight ofthe event was the performance ofthe Limited Edition Drum Corps.

“We were so happy that these tal-ented youngsters could come to en-tertain us,” she said

“They are part of a campaign toshow our youth a way out of crime

and gangsterism, and in that waymaking our communities safer.”

The group will be hosting an endof year function today at the Bonte-heuwel Community Centre in Apri-cot Street, from 10:00 where theywill be hosting the drama Break theSilence, of Domestic Violence in con-junction with Radio 786.

The country’s top tournament water-skiers will be descending on the pic-turesque Bon Esperance lake justsouth of Malmesbury for four days ofskiing.

The competition includes a night sla-lom competition tomorrow night, andthe West Coast Championship whichculminates on Sunday.

The large field of nearly 40 skiers rep-resenting all age groups will participatein all three tournament disciplines –namely slalom skiing around buoys,thrilling ramp jumpingand trick skiing.

Several Western Province waterski-ershave faredwell at international tour-naments this year, with Gabriella Vil-joen, 18, hoping to improve on her aston-ishing half buoy on 11,25 metres inslalom to break yet another South Afri-can record. Senior skier Jan Johnson

took her third gold medal at the Europe-an/African (EA) Championship for sla-lom this year, and is currently rankednumber two in the world in her agegroup. Fifteen-year old Eamon van derMerwe, from Parklands College, was theyoungest skier to qualify for the EA u-21Championship taking place in Kaka-mas, South Africa next year, and he hada podium result for slalom at the EA u-17Champs in Europe this year.

Other top skiers worth watching in-clude Durbanville High School’s LouisSchutte and dramatic ramp jumper Si-mon Fairbank from Milnerton amongsta sprinkling of Namibian skiers.

Skiing gets under way at 08:00 eachday from Friday, with the night skiingstarting tomorrow at 20:00. Entrance isfree. Bon Esperance is situated on theN7, just 15 kilometres south of Malmes-bury.
