The under-13 boys and girls teams from this school in the suburb of Montana became the national champs after the boys beat Mpumalanga 41-14, and the girls from the same province did not fare any better going down 41-14 in the National Basketball Schools final at the University of Pretoria campus last month. School principal Terrence Timmet beams with pride as he mentions that the two teams, who are coached by deputy principal Craig Daniels, have won this title three times in a row. “They have beaten all the teams in the Western Cape during the course of the play offs,” he says. “Some schools have become fierce opposi- tion but so far could not offer sustained re- sistance to beat us.” This comes as a consequence of having es- tablished the culture of basketball at Monte- video Primary and continued discipline rou- tines which are a very necessary element in the armoury of any team sport. Timmet said minister of sport and recrea- tion, Fikile Mbalula, emphasised the impor- tance of sport being played at grass roots lev- el when he delivered his speech at the gath- ering in Pretoria. “This is what Montevideo under our coach and his support staff has become – a nursery for star basketball players. “There are an increasing number of high schools which are getting involved in bas- ketball and I always hope that the learners who have experienced the sport at primary school will carry it on at high school.” Timmet explained how he understood why their teams can achieve so much suc- cess in the sport. “Every morning when I ar- rive at school during the final term I see the basketball teams already at work on the bas- ketball court which the school developed it- self,” he said. “It is an indictment against the estab- lished school system in South Africa that your top national team does not even have an indoor facility to practise their sport. “Whilst these inequalities of the past still exist, we are still pressing ahead and the ded- ication of the head coach who also serves on the national front to prepare our national teams at different levels, rubs off on our chil- dren.” There is also lots of praise for the coach who has been deputy principal for the past 16 years. “He has gone from strength to strength with the basketball teams because of his un- derstanding of the needs of the communities from which the learners emerge. “A platform is provided for them to launch themselves from the known circumstances to the wonderful unknown through hard work and commitment. “He teaches them that there is a wider world where you can stake your claim if you are prepared to stand your ground through sheer commitment and dedication. “We would like to thank him, his family and former learners who are all fully in- volved in the team coaching and daily man- agement that has led to this success.” V Photos on page 2. On 20 December, the senior residents of Riverton Estate were once again treated to a first class event in celebration of the legacy they have created in the communi- ty. The Riverton Estate Residents’ Associa- tion (Rera) annually hosts the event in honour of all residents over 60 years of age. For the December event over 250 seniors in the community were invited to receive a three-course meal, entertain- ment, gifts and warm fellowship with each other. The youth of the community once again dressed up in 1960s styling to escort and wait on the seniors. Steve Ross, the chair of Rera, (standing back left with the group) awarded those seniors who were active in uplifting, uniting and securing the community. One of the seniors on the neighbourhood watch is blind, yet he walks through the neighbor- hood with the team each weekend. He hoped that their action will encourage the younger working generation to do the same and ensure the vision of Rera is fulfilled. More photos on page 2. Youth provide a good old treat

An organisation in Delft is on a mission toempower learners to embrace education.

Pastor Nozi Matomela of the Great Com-mission Community Project is seriousabout the task at hand.

“In our quest and drive to empower thecommunity of Delft, we conducted a surveyin order to determine key issues that needattention within the community,” she said.

“One of the major issues that caught ourattention in relation to the youth was a highrate of dropouts from school and a lack ofcareer guidance.

“This saw too many learners placing lesseffort in their school work due to the fact

they were not working toward goals in theirlives. In our view that spells out a hopelessfuture for our kids.”

They also found learners from disadvan-taged households cannot afford the necessi-ties for going to school, such as uniforms, school fees and even stationery.

“We then made it an objective to eradicatethis matter by starting a back to school cam-paign which will also serve as a career exhi-bition in order to guide our kids who are athigh school level, and giving gifts of schoolnecessities to children from disadvantagedbackgrounds.

“For the event, which will be held on Sat-

urday 7 February, we have extended invita-tions to various government departmentsand educational facilities to partner with usfor this day, and we invite anyone who feelthey can play a part in our mission to offertheir help.

“We want the community and public toembrace us and become part of the visionof a brighter future for our youth and coun-try.”

The event will be held in Delft Thubelit-sha at Hindle High school starting at 12noon.V For further information contact the pastor on 078278 3654 or email [email protected].

As of 1 February, the City of Cape Townwill be implementing a new load shed-ding schedule when load shedding is

declared by Eskom.Thecurrent scheduleusing thedaysof the

week was first implemented in 2008 and hasbeen regularly updated since. It was desig-ned specifically for occasional load shed-ding during peak demand times.

Incovenient times“Since the latter weeks of last year, Es-

kom’s national control centre declared loadshedding on a regular basis and over wee-kends. This has led to a situation where so-me residents repeatedly experienced sche-duled power outages at the most inconve-nient times and days of the week.

“In order to address this matter, the Cityhas setupanew load shedding schedule thatprovides a more frequent rotation and is tobe implemented in accordance with the

days of themonth instead,” saysErnest Son-nenberg, the City’s maycomember for utili-ty services.

RotationWith this new schedule, the City will en-

sure that residents experience scheduledpower outages at a different time and weekday than before, rotating the inconvenienceof power outages across all supply areas.

“From 1 February, the City will be imple-menting load shedding according to thisnew schedule when it is instructed to do sobyEskom. An insertwith thenew load shed-ding schedule and an area map of the diffe-rent supply areas across the city will be dis-tributed with local newspapers during thelast week of January. Residents are advisedtokeep theseand to refer to the schedule andthe map so they can take the necessary pre-cautions whenever load shedding is requi-red by Eskom,” says Sonnenberg.

The City has also developed a mobile ver-sion of the load shedding page which resi-dents can access by selecting the new tab onthe City’s mobile homepage. Individual de-tailedmaps of the different areas are availa-ble in PDF and JPG format; by selecting thearea numbers of the PDF area map, resi-dents will be able to view their areas.

InformationBesides the newspaper print out, resi-

dents can get information about load shed-ding from the following online sources:

Firework displays on New Year’s Eveare a common sight enjoyed by many. However, despite being a spectacular

sight, the illegal discharge of fireworks innon-designated areas has had a negative ef-fect on some pets and their owners.

One pet owner from Marinda Park inKuils River said she fears for the safety ofher dog after it ran off on New Year’s Evedue to fireworks near the family’s house.

“We came home from church after mid-night and discovered our dog had runaway,” said Yvette Smith.

Smith said the family’s dog Mo, a minia-ture pinscher adopted from the Animal An-ti-Cruelty League, has a limp and is easilytraumatised.

Lost petsAnimal welfare organisations have been

inundated with lost petsWanika Davids, spokesperson for the

Cape of GoodHope SPCA, said the organisa-tion collected about 20 runaway animals onNew Year’s Eve as a result of fireworks.

“Two of them were involved in motor ve-hicle accidents,” said Davids.

“Kraaifontein was the worst this year interms of illegal fireworks, judging by thecomplaints we have received,” she said.

Mpho Hlalele, Animal Anti-CrueltyLeague assistant general manager, saidthey had also their hands full. A total of 16lost dogs were handed in at their Bellvilleand Epping branches over New Year’s Eve.

“The majority were from Kuils River andKraaifontein and a few from Brackenfelland Goodwood.

“We cannot say whether they are all a di-rect result of fireworks, but they were allhanded in on either the 1st or the 2nd of Jan-uary,” said Hlalele.

“That number may not sound terriblyhigh, but as you can imagine we have somany animals already in our care. It still

puts a strain on our already limited resour-ces,” Hlalele said.

She said most of the dogs do not have mi-crochips which could have helped the orga-nisation find the owners.

The City of Cape Town identified eightdesignated areas for fireworks. Despitethis, several complaints of fireworks in resi-dential areas were logged at the City’s 107call centre.

Richard Bosman, executive director forsafety and security, said law enforcement

received 10 calls relating to the illegal dis-charge of fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

Numerous firesPeople also complained to TygerBurger

about fireworks discharged inBellville andBrackenfell.

Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City’sfire and rescue services, said firefighters re-sponded to 14 vegetation fires betweenmid-night on New Year’s Eve and 01:00. They at-tributed the fires to the illegal discharge offireworks as they do not usually respond toso many vegetation fires during the night.V People who are still looking for their pets can contact the SPCA on 021 700 4166 or email lostandfound@spcact.co.za or the AACL on 021 534 6426.Lost and found animals can also be posted on TygerBurger’s Facebook page.

then the relationship between local council-lors, the community and agencies such as lawenforcement in order to reduce crime.Despite a decrease in gang and drug related

crimes over the festive season, police lastweek cracked down on several drug houses.“We managed to confiscate 528 grams of

dagga, 17 packets of tik and 13 mandrax ta-blets. We also made 21 arrests relating todrugs,”Bester said.OverDecember, aggrava-ted robbery such as hijackings increased by16,7%whilemurder increased by 25% and at-tempted murder deceased by 10%.

The Oasis Association has been makinga difference in the lives of the intellec-tually disabled since 1952 and contin-

ues to help improve life for many families. Before 1952 these children were denied

schooling, which led to some determinedparents making a difference to their situa-tion by forming their own organisation.Today Oasis provides daily care for over

450 intellectually disabled people at protec-tive workshops, residential facilities foradults employed at the workshops and whoar in need of a safe and loving home, and daycentres for profoundly or severely intellec-tually disabled children.A new service just been rolled out is an ac-

tivity group for adults who need stimulationbut have difficulty coping with a full day’sproductive work.Filicity September, Day Centre co-ordina-

tor in the Ravensmead area, recently hostedanopendayat the centre andexplained theiractivities.“Thebuilding of the firstOasisDayCentre

was completed inRavensmead in September1988 and admitted approximately 30 chil-dren,” she says.“But as families in and around the Delft

area became desperate for care and basic ed-ucation for their intellectually disabled chil-dren, it became necessary to keep long wait-ing lists as the Oasis Ravensmead Day Cen-tre was full.“The Delft Day Centre started off in a spa-

cious room at the Delft clinic but it quicklybecame too small given the overwhelmingcommunity need.“Thanks to the generosity of two funders,

Oasis Association was able to purchase andrenovate a house in Delft. The centre was of-ficially opened in 2002.“Today the day centres provide develop-

mental care for 70 children and young adultsin Ravensmead and 20 at the Delft Day Cen-tre.”She also pointed out that many of the chil-

dren and young adults at centres not onlyhave a profound or severe intellectual disa-bility,many of them also additional disabili-ties such as physical disability, epilepsy orchallenging behaviour.AlthoughOasis charges a nominalmonth-

ly fee for a range of services at the day cen-tres including feeding schemes, daily trans-port to and from home, physiotherapy, so-cial work services and developmentalprogrammes tailor-made to meet individualneeds, given the poverty ofmany of the fami-lies in the area, the organisation is depend-

ent on donations to ensure service deliverycan continue for a very vulnerable group ofpeople.“Oasis day centres strive to ensure that

children with severe or profound intellectu-al disability are integrated into the lives oftheir families and community; where theyare accepted for their abilities and notshunned because of their disability; wheretheyare seenas children thatneed extrapro-tection, care and stimulation,” concludedSeptember. If you would like to assist the organisa-

Everything was ready for the Gordons tomove into their newly-purchased Par-klands home. All their possessions were loaded onto a

trailer, their minds were already set onhow they want their house to look and theyfinalised the termination of their previouslease.Everything was ready, up until the mo-

ment they tried to collect the keys from theestate agent who sold them the house. It turns out the previous tennant never

moved out.According to the Sotheby’s Realty estate

agent, Helene Ludwig, incidents such asthis are becoming more common.“The lawsmust be changed! It can’t go on

like this! Presently you cannot evict someo-ne if they don’t have another place they cango to,” elaborates Ludwig.According to her the previous tennant,

Pastor Ugochukwu Oparacho, had a signedagreement in which he acknowledged thathim and his familywere going to vacate thepremise by 31 October. But Oparacho never left. That’s when the “nightmare” started for

the Gordons, who were stuck with no ac-commodation and all their possessions ona trailer. They were supposed to move into the

house they bought on 1 November.Despite paying themonthlybond theyha-

ve still not moved into their house.More than two months later and Opara-

cho and his family are still living there.According to Ryan Gordon, Oparacho

has received an eviction order andmust va-cate the premises by the middle of Februa-ry, but the latter will not leave it at that.Oparacho has seeked the legal advice of

attorney Paul Sharoux, who has toldTyger-Burger that this matter is far from closed.Another local newspaper ran an article

while the matter was still in court and Sha-roux says this is a case of contempt of court.“My instruction is to proceed to pull the

whole application for eviction and subse-quently we might bring in charges of defa-mation of character. My client has no com-ment at this stage, but he will challengewhatever happens from a legal point ofview,” says Sharoux.Gordon hopes thematter will be resolved

as soon as possible, after anxiously witnes-sing it dragging on much longer than hewould ever have thought.“There is an end in sight... I just try to

look at the positives. At the moment the or-der says they ust vacate the premises on 13February, and if theyare still there then thesheriff will remove them on the 15th. Wecan’t afford to continue renting and payingour bills, so wewill be in the day theymoveout,” he says. The system has left him speechless.“I can understand the law protecting ille-

gal eviction. It protects the innocent. Butthis is not the case,” he adds.

TheMRC Unit on Anxiety and StressDisorders at the Universities of Stel-lenboschandCapeTownseekpartici-pants for a research study on gam-bling disorders. At least 50 percent of South Afri-

cans gamble in one way or ano-ther.However, it does become a pro-blem when they start spending toomuch time and/or money gambling.According to the Quarterly Labour

Force Survey of 2012, four to sevenpercent of South African adults areproblem gamblers, whereas approx-imately one percent of the populationsuffers from gambling disorder.Problem gamblers who find it in-

creasingly difficult to resist the urgeto gamble despite negative conse-quences, such as financial and/or re-lationshipdifficulties,might be suffe-ring from gambling disorder (someti-mes referred to as gamblingaddiction).Gambling disorder is a psychiatric

I have been reading withinterest the current debatebetween the anti and pro-gungroups.

Predictably, that old andwell-used expression that“those who live by the swordwill die by the sword” hasmade its appearance. A veryreasonable sentiment, to besure, but it does not stand upto scrutiny from a legitimategun owners point of view.Genghis Khan lived by thesword. So does the modern-dayISIS. Genghis did, and ISISsurely will, die by the sword. The rest of us, who need toprotect ourselves from thosewho, like them, seek to imposetheir will on us, have to livewith the sword. There is a verybig difference here!

Unfortunately, there are fartoo many people in this worldwho, despite what must surelybe an in-built knowledge ofwhat is right and what iswrong, choose to impose theirwill on others. History showsthat has always been how it is– and that is always how it willbe. Whether on a global level,or on a personal level, theprinciple is the same.

As far as divine interventionis concerned, I do not believethat any of the world’s multipleGods are going to come to ouraid and protect us. It would benice if this did happen, though. We would not have to worryabout wearing seat belts, locking our doors and gates orwalking in dark alleys. Wecould eat, drink and smokewhatever we wanted. We couldpark our cars and have nofears that they would not bethere when we came back. Inshort, we could simply rock onand not have to rely on otherpeople and/or clever devices toprotect and save us.

But, in a real world, wecannot just sit back and leaveour safety and wellbeing tosomeone else – or somethingelse. That is a cop-out. We have

to play our part and do whate-ver it takes to help God,whichever one we do (or donot) believe in, to help us. Thetrick here is to ensure thatwhen helping ourselves we donot inadvertently become thebad guys.

The introduction of the newgreen lidded wheelie bins forrecycled waste in the Bellvillearea was an excellent innovati-on. This has given all the localresidents a chance to getinvolved in a useful project.Unfortunately, there alwaysseems to be a downside.

Where I live in La Rochellewe have our normal refuseremoval service on Wednesdayand our recycled material onThursday. It is customary forresidents to put their bins outfirst thing in the morning. Thisis soon followed by a stream ofstrangers who inspect the binsfor useful material. Theirpreference seems to be bottlesand similar saleable objects. Ihave no problem with thesegentlemen collecting thismaterial and disposing of itsomewhere for remuneration. After all we are all endeavou-ring to eke out a living. What Ido feel strongly about is whenthey sit in the park to sort theirsaleable material and leave alltheir discarded mess behind forlocal residents to clean up. Mybiggest concern, however, isthat if this practice escalatesand there is little left in therecycle bins, it would no longerbe profitable for the recyclecompany to continue this verynecessary service.

The homeless problem inBellville is now becomingchronic and if this matter is notseriously attended to we willsoon be having more peopleliving on the streets than in thehouses.

I am disappointed to see howmany shops are opening onChristmas Day and Boxing Day(a day traditionally meant forgiving gifts to employees butinstead, those employees arebeing made to work). Fruit andVeg in Pinehurst as an examp-le. Whether you are Christianor not this is a day normallyspent with family by themajority of South Africans, butnow junior staff are beingexpected to work on these dayswhile senior staff sit at homewith their families. This showsno compassion for staff mem-bers and their personal lives. Itis different if you work inessential services, but a super-market has no need to be open. What happened to the dayswhen stores shut on Sundays? Now shops must be open asoften as possible for as long aspossible, so the guys sitting athome with their families canmake more money. LEWENSKIEKIE

Wanneer jy mense daardiereg wil ontneem, maak jy jouself skuldigaan fundamentalisme. Dit is wanneeremosie alle rasionele denke vernietig.

En ongelukkig ook ’n tendens is wathopeloos te veel in ons land kop uitsteek.

er extended its deadline for the due date forapplications to allow more people to apply, station commander Colonel Vernon Bestersaid recently. He said all applicants will be subjected to

a series of tests, the first of which is a psy-chometric test. After the test results are fi-nalised the applicant will be tested for fit-ness. Thereafter, fingerprints will be takento check if they have a criminal record orcases pending, Bester said. Each applicant undergoes a medical and

psychological assessment, he said.“Applicants must be proficient in at least

two official languages of which onemust beEnglish, and not have visible tattoos.A valid South African identification doc-

ument, a seniormatric certificate and proofof residence are required, and additional

documents such as a valid driver’s licencewill count in the applicant’s favour, saidBester.Any post matric qualifications can be

handed in as well.In Kleinvlei the police will be assisted by

the localCPFduring the interview conduct-ed after the tests.“This way we will be able to include the

community and they can assist to select thepolice members who will work in their are-as,” Bester explained.Selected applicants will have to partici-

pate in a 24-month basic police developmentlearning programme consisting of threephases: 10 months training at a designatedpolice academy – either in Bishop Lavis orOudtshoorn – 12months training at a policestation and a further two months assess-ment at the academy. Applicants need to bebetween the ages of 18 and 29.Interested parties can obtain application

Along with checking that your child’s uni-form, stationery and lunchbox are preparedfor the start of next week’s reopening ofschools, moms and dads have also been ur-ged to check their children’s health. The City of Cape Town said these checks

are crucial before the start of the new schoolyear on Wednesday, 21 January. The City’s Benedicta van Minnen, mayco

member for health, said these checks inclu-de general check-ups but also vaccinationswhere applicable.According to the national childhood im-

munisation schedule, children are given thetetanus and reduced strength of diphtheriavaccine, also known as the TD vaccine at theage of six, followed by another round at theage of 12 years.“I want to urge parents to ensure their

children receive these vaccinations, whichare administered via an injection in theirupper arm. Prevention is better than cure.“Also, our clinics offer these immunisati-

ons free of charge. We still have a few daysleft before the academic year starts, so nowis as good a time as any to get the vaccinati-ons done for children who need to get theseshots,” Van Minnen said. She said the city’s health staff are alsowell

placed to provide advice on good nutrition, which is a key focus on the directorate’sawareness and education programme.“It makes sense to prevent more people

fromgetting sickwhich iswhyweplace suchheavy emphasis on responsible behaviour, but also good nutrition.“Our staff can help parents with advice on

finding a balance for their child’s lunchboxthat will positively aid their growth and de-velopment, but alsokeep themhealthy,”VanMinnen added.

The 30-year-old man who was arrested inconnection with a series of murders aftera number of bodies were discovered nearCentury City station, was a local securityguard. The suspect is currently facing murder

and a rape charges at the Goodwood Mag-istrate’s Court, but police are investigat-ing further allegations. He might be connected to six bodies

which have been uncovered in an openfieldnext to the station sinceFebruary lastyear. On Monday, magistrate Sean Lea post-

poned the case to 19 January. The suspect was arrested at his home in

Gugulethu on Wednesday evening after abreakthrough was made in the search forthe Century City murderer, with the lastbody having been found on 19 Decemberlast year, Afrikaans daily Die Burger re-ported on Friday. The man was arrested by a task team

connected to the police’s Operation Com-bat.

Victim’s belongingsIt was reported that the “drugged” sus-

pect refused to let the police in when theyknocked on his door.Apparently two items belonging to vic-

tims were found in his room. The man has since also been linked to

themurder of an unidentifiedwomanwhowas found on theGoodwood side of the sta-tion in September 2013.A reliable source told Die Burger on

Thursday that the last body, like the oth-ers, was naked with the hands tied behindthe back and buried in a shallow grave. The body was not very badly decomposedand there were marks, which looked likebruises, on her head. All the bodies wereof black women.

Besides the bruises, it also looked as ifa piece of thewoman’s facewas “missing”.“I can’t say if was possibly because of ratsin the bush that ate it, or if the murderercut it off,” the source says.It was previously reported that the po-

lice were investigating the possibility thatthe murders were committed by the sameperson or people, as well as the possibilitythat the Century-Citymurderer had killedelsewhere in the province.

DisbelievingSources close to the investigation re-

vealed that the suspect gave himself awayafter he made use of one of his victim’sphones. One of the victims was identified as No-

themba Ndondo from Khayelitsha.

The 20-year-old’s body was found on De-cember 19, four days after she left forworkand did not return home. The Khayelitsha resident reportedly

worked as a cleaner at Ratanga Junction.CapeTownmayorPatricia deLille earli-

er issued a reward of R50 000 for anyonewith information leading to the murder-er’s arrest. The aunt of the suspect was recently in-

terviewed byDieBurger and described thesuspect as “quiet, a loner, but alwayfriendly”.She added that she is still in a state of

disbelief.Provincial police spokespersonLieuten-

antColonelAndréTraut, said theywill notcurrently be divulging any specifics sur-rounding the case.

Beachgoers have beenwarned to bewareof sharks coming close inshore duringthe summer season.

According to a statement by the City ofCape Town, the presence of great whitesharks in the in-shore areas increases thistime of year. The Fish Hoek shark exclusion net is be-

ing deployed and retrieved daily and SharkSpotters are monitoring identified beachesto ensure the safety of all visitors to the seashore, council says in a statement.Since September last year, there have

been 57 shark sightings at beaches moni-tored by the Shark Spotters. There have been 36 sightings at Muizen-

bergCorner, sevenatFishHoek, five atMon-wabisi, three at St James, two at Kogel Bay,two at Glencairn, one sighting at The Hoekin Noordhoek and one at Clovelly. With the presence of great white sharks at

in-shore areas expected to increase over thesummer season, the City of Cape Town is en-suring that the necessary precautionarymeasures are being effected.Shark Spotters are monitoring identified

beaches and the Fish Hoek shark exclu-sion net is being deployed and retrieved dai-ly.

Effective barrierThe Fish Hoek exclusion net has proven

to be an effective shark safety measure bycreating a physical barrier preventing anysharks from entering the bathing area.Trials conducted during 2013 and 2014 in-

dicated that the risk to marine life remainsvery low and there are high levels of publicsupport for the exclusion net becoming apermanent feature at Fish Hoek Beach.Until March, the Fish Hoek exclusion net

will operate daily, depending on the weath-er.Weekends, public holidays and school hol-

idays will be prioritised.

The exclusion net will not be deployed ifweather conditions (wind and swell) aredeemed to be unsuitable; this will be as-sessed on a daily basis.Should weather conditions deteriorate

over the course of a day when the net is al-ready deployed, the net may be removed asa precautionary measure.Additionally, if there is a high presence of

whales or other marine mammals in the ar-ea the net will not be deployed.–The net will also not be deployed when

trek-netting is taking place off the beach.

If a whale moves into the Fish Hoek baywhile the net is deployed, the Shark Spottersherd the animal away from the net and outof the area, using the exclusion net boat. This is in accordance with the approved

whale disentanglement strategy and resi-dents should not be concerned if this occurs.

Sharks commonOn days the exclusion net is deployed, the

operating hours will be from 09:00 to 17:00,and may occasionally be extended to allowfor lifesaving training or events.

The Shark Spotters will keep beach usersinformed via Twitter (@SharkSpotters) andFacebook as to whether the net is deployed.Surfers arewarned to be vigilant in the ar-

eas between Sunrise Beach and MacassarBeach during the spring and summermonths, as research has shown that sharkpresence in these waters is extremely com-mon at this time of year.Surfers should also be aware that sight-

ings of great white sharks at Noordhoekbeach are common on the days following anorth-west wind.

A golf day in aid of the Yarden Children’sEnrichment Centre in Durbanville is due totake place on 12 February at the BellvilleGolf Club.

The centre is set to open this month andthe organisation is in desperate need of do-nations.

The idea for the centre came about whenthe parents of Pierre Cloete, who has a spas-tic quadriplegia cerebral palsy impairmentas well as epilepsy, struggled to find a schoolor daycare centre that would be able to ac-commodate him.

For the first eight years of his life, his pa-

rents had to employ a full-time caregiver totake care of him.

After realising there is a need for such aschool in the northern suburbs, Pierre’s pa-rents decided to open one.

The Bergsig Dutch Reformed Church inDurbanville has made five Sunday schoolclass rooms available in which the centrecan operate.

The format of the golf day is a four-ball alli-ance (two scores to count). To enter a four-ball at R2 000, contact Laetitia on 082 876 1763or send an email to [email protected] can also sponsor a hole for R500.

THE second half of the Western ProvinceSoftball Federation’s season resumedin all earnest at Turfhall Stadium on

Saturday. While Falcons worked their way to a hard-

earned 6-4 victory against a gutsy KenfacPhillies side, Tantasport was equal to thetask of beating VOB 7-4 and St Martin’sturned the tables in recording a shock 4-3win over arch-rivals Westridge Yankeesfrom Mitchell’s Plain in the Super Leaguecompetition that had many a fan smilingfrom ear to ear.

However, head coach Wayne May’s Glen-thorn-Athlone side who sport an unbeatenrun to date - were not in action – but areperched on top of the standings, having wonall their nine games with a full quota of 18points in the bag and are two points ahead

of Falcons (16 points) who have played tenmatches to date.

Nonetheless, with St Martin’s having nail-ed Westridge Yankees and causing the latterto suffer their fourth defeat in nine matches– Saints have moved up the ladder to thirdposition with 11 points from ten assign-ments.

Too lateHead coach Natasha de Klerk’s Yankees

side left it too late. Trailing 4-0 at the top ofthe fifth inning, Yankees awoke from a deepslumber and in the sixth batting frame regis-tered their first runs on the scoreboardwhen Aimee-Leigh Campbell, Glynis Koop-man and Nuraan Williams each crossed thehome plate.

However, the three runs were not enoughto salvage a point. Secondly, Yankees seemno longer to be the team or the biggest name

on the ballpark. They no longer drive fearinto the opposition and ardent supportersare already starting to ask when the Yankeescan rise to the challenge and contend for thesilverware again?

Besides Saints pitcher Lindsay Damonshowing her mettle on the mound – the high-light of the Bishop Lavis’ side well deservedvictory was the solo circuit hit – the homerun belonging to Elderisha Langenhoven, who batted 1-1.

Langenhoven was ably supported by Naw-aal Nacerodien, Bonita Cloete (three bagger)each 1-2, Danielle Ford and Kim Cloete (each1-3) in which Saints smacked five hitsagainst Yankees pitcher Megan Cable.

In her sixth innings Cable pitched fourstrike outs, but also struggled at times tofind the plate as she conceded seven base-on-balls and the scoreline could have been big-ger had Saints not left seven stranded be-

tween bases.

Well marshalledHowever, Lindsay Damon held her nerve

and pitched a steady game with a well mar-shalled field that ably assisted her in almostregistering a shut-out victory to her nameconsidering that Yankees loaded the basestwice in the third and sixth frame but couldonly once score runs due to poor batting.

Damon claimed two scapls in her six in-ning and allowed three base-on-balls whileshe gave up three scattered hits of which Ai-mee-Lee Campbell, Glynis Koopman andRoxanne Ohlsson faired best for Yankeeswith the bat.

Adding to the thrills in the Major League,Strandfontein Mets, placed second on thelog, beat Belhar Dolphins 11-0 while Aven-dale and Normies shared the spoils 3-3 in anexciting and thrill-a-minute showdown.

TRANS AGULHAS: INDOMITABLE PAIR BEAT FASTER CLASS

Boaters power to a winANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

The twoweremomentarily suspended inthe air.Underneath them the inflatable pow-

er boat roared forward at 80km/h.“Somewhere along the line there is always

a close call,” states the pilot nonchalantly.Neither of the two could afford to fall off

the boat if their aspiration of finishing firstoverall in the Trans Agulhas Challenge wasto be realised. It was day five of the world’s toughest in-

flatable boat race and they were knee-deepin the long haul.Pilot Stefan Lindeque, and co-pilot Tony

Ingram hoped the 131km stretch from Gans-baai to Strand would be calm and unevent-ful, but they also knew that power boatingbeyond the waves was never really “calmand uneventful”.

Limits of enduranceThe twowere thus not surprised when the

waters became choppier than a lumberjackon steroids. For 10kmnearCapeHangklip their endur-

ance was tested to the limits – this after theycompleted 188km on day one, 86km on daytwo, 161km on day three and 111km on dayfour.“The stretch from Gansbaai to Strand is

usually flat, but that day it was really chal-lenging. The pounding water was extremelyrough. After five days, 10km of poundingwas the last thing we wanted,” says TableView’s Lindeque. At that stage of the race they knew they

stood a chance of not only winning theirclass, but also trumping the faster modifiedpowerboat class – something that no-one

has ever achieved before. But if one of them was thrown overboard

then the bid for this remarkable achieve-ment would have to wait till next year. After amoment that seemed to last an eter-

nity, Tony landed on the boat again.A split second later the airborne Stefan al-

so returned to the inflatable Nulandis. That was close...

Home stretchTheir backs were aching, their arms were

numb, but they were not going to throw inthe towel. He adds that day three of the Trans Aghul-

has near Witsand is mentally the toughest.“There is nothing on the beach. It is 70 km

of nothing really!”For Stefan, however, Cape Hangklip was

the pinnacle of perseverance.Once the ocean settled down there, the fi-

nal stretch of the race was a little more bear-able.Since every second counted and the two

could not switch off even for amoment, timeseemed to drag.Theirmuscles and boneswere shaken and

shimmied into mash, but their determina-tion and adrenalin ensured the final pushproceeded without a hitch.Suddenly it was all over. They reached the shore andwere crowned

the overall winners with a time of ninehours and 51 minutes.“Wewere in a different class, and themod-

ified class, which is faster than ours, alwayswin the overall.”This victory will taste sweeter than any of

their previous ones, of which there aremany. The 41-year-old Stefan has been World

Champion on three occasions and has never

looked back in regret for choosing the sportin 1998.“Having grownup inMelkbosstrand, surf-

ing was always a great love of mine. ThenI saw these boats that can actually race in-side the surf line and was drawn to it. I’mjust basically looking for any excuse to getinto the ocean.”

Hours in the gym to strengthen his coremuscles, arms and back has paid off manytimes, and it is clear that Stefan is a longwayfrom hanging up his power boating boots. The friendly rivalry between him and

northern suburbs’ Wimpie Ackermann, aswell as his insatiable desire to master thewaves, will keep him pushing the limits.
