conned into sellingorpurchas-ing Reconstruction and Devel-opment Programme (RDP)homes illegally.Constable Jacqueline Ruka,

social crime officer at Delft po-lice, says residents are ap-proached by individuals whostage as “housing agents” inthe Delft precinct to help pur-chase or sell an RDP home.

The top eight performing schools in theprovince received a donation of educa-tion equipment worth R313 000 from

the Airports Company South Africa.The schools were identified by the West-

ern Cape Education Department (WCED) asthe secondary schools that have shown animprovement in their Grade 12 pass rates.Over the past ten years, Cape Town Inter-

national Airport has donated R18.1 milliontowards such community projects near theairport.Through this initiative, the schools re-

ceive interactive white boards, educationalsoftware and training for teachers. In thepast four years, 31 interactive white boardshave been donated valued at close to R1 mil-lion.MarkMaclean, assistant generalmanager

of Cape Town International Airport, saidbusiness at the airport is not only about air-ports and operations, but also about givingback to communities.“The upliftment of the airport’s immedi-

ate surrounding communities is importantto us and in achieving this, we have to en-sure that whatever support we give leads toself-reliance and sustainable projects whichbenefit the people living in these communi-ties,” Maclean said. Aman who admitted to the murder ofLee Adams, a teen whose decapitatedbodywas found in the derelict Florida

Primary,was foundguilty ofmurderandbe-heading the victim.

According to News24, Aljar Swartz wasfound guilty by Western Cape High CourtJudge Elize Steyn on Monday 14 March.

Steyn ruled that themurder committed in2013 was premeditated.

Steyn also found him guilty of threecounts of intentionally inciting, persuadingand encouraging men to lure a victim to

Ravensmead. According to the reportSwartz seemed unmoved by the judgment.

“He calmly looked around the court andwas led down to the police cells during anadjournment,” the news service reported.

Lastmonth, Swartz admitted to killing 15-year-old Adams so he could sell Adams’sbody parts to a sangoma.

He admitted to strangling the teenager atFlorida Primary School in Ravensmead onOctober 17, 2013. Swartz then stabbed himnumerous times until he died.

“Thereafter I decapitated him,” he stated

in the document handed to the court.“Although I consumed alcohol and dagga

during the day of October 17, 2013, I couldstill appreciate the wrongfulness of my con-duct. I was a follower of Satan at the time,”Swartz stated.

A pathologist had concluded that Adamsdied due to sharp force trauma to the neck.Stab wounds, bruises, and abrasions werefound on his face and neck.

A security guard found the boy’s body atthe school. The teen’s head was later foundin a shallow grave in his yard.

Die nuwe bestuur van die Counsellingand Social Development-sentrum(CSD) in Bishop Lavis beoog om die

sentrum tot nuwe hoogtes te lei.Denise Petersen, adjunk-direkteur van

die sentrum, sê die sentrum het agt jaarlank onder die vorige bestuur deur selfbe-fondsing kop bo water gehou.

“Dus het die nuwe bestuur die sentrumsonder fondse oorgeneem en bou voorlopigop daardie beginsel voort, maar is vasbeslo-te om hierdie belangrike gemeenskaps-diens na hoër hoogtes te neem,” sê Petersen.

Die sentrum is daarop toegespits om ver-al behulpsaam te wees met die berading enprogramme vir dwelmverslaafde kinders inskole, asook die sosiale vooruitgang van diegemeenskap. Petersen werk nou saam mettwee skole, die hoërskole John Ramsay enBishop Lavis, wat daagliks kinders na hier-die program verwys. Sy sê daar is tans ’nspan van beraders wat met hulle saamwerkwerk, asook aandag skenk aan vrouemis-

handeling en talle ander probleemgevalle.“Ons het ook twee professionele sielkun-

diges wat op ’n deeltydse basis sessies by diesentrum aanbied. Hulle bied hul dienstegratis vir die sentrum aan,” sê Petersen.

Wat vanjaar gaan uitstaan is die werk-skeppingsprogram vir gestremdes, wat virhierdie doel gekeur word. Gestremdes wordaangemoedig om by die sentrum se pro-gram in te skakel.

Die ander werkskeppingsprogramme enkleinsake-geleenthede is die kersmakery,blommerangskikking, kralewerk en maan-delikse kunsklasse. “Ons wil alle werklosesaanmoedig om hierdie geleentheid aan tegryp, veral die kerse sal dié winter vir ’ngoeie inkomste sorg,” sê Petersen. Die sen-trum voorsien ook elke maand kospakkiesaan behoeftiges in Bishop Lavis.

Petersen sê die sentrum huisves ook tans’n private diensverskaffer, Young Peo-ple@Work, wat die gemeenskap met kur-susse rekenaarvaardig maak.

The Western Cape Department of Com-munity Safety this week said it wasconcerned at the alleged trigger happi-

ness of some police officers.This follows the recent shooting incident

inwhich two staff members of the Americanfast food giant McDonald’s in Kuils Riverwere mistaken for criminals and shot deadby police.The incident occurred early on Monday

morning in Hindle Road near Mfuleni.It is alleged the staff of McDonald’s were

transported in a similar vehicle as that of agroup of armed robbers who robbed a fillingstation in Kuils River earlier the same day.TheWesternCapeMinister of Community

Safety, Dan Plato, shared his sympathywiththe family, friends and colleagues later theday.“It is reported that two restaurant employ-

ees have been killed and others woundedwhen the police allegedly opened fire on avehicle they were being transported in. Thedetails of the incident are concerning and Itrust the Independent Police InvestigativeDirectorate (IPID) is already busy with athorough investigation,” Plato says.TygerBurger learned that the shooting in-

cident occurred near the Delro residentialarea in Blue Downs.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieuten-ant-Colonel André Traut confirmed that arobbery had occurred during the earlyhours of Monday at a petrol filling stationin Kuils River, which led to two subsequentincidents later in themorning in whichfour people werekilled and severalothers injured.“These incidents

are now subject to anIPID investigationand this office willnot be elaborating onthe detail at thisstage,” said Traut.

Got in the wayRobbie Raburabu, spokesperson for IPID,

responded saying the police allege that theywere following up on a robbery at the Caltexfilling station in Grove Street, Kuils River,when a chase towards Mfuleni and subse-quent shoot-out ensued.“It is alleged that in pursuing a Toyota

Quantum which was used in a robbery, theoccupants shot at the police and the policereturned fire.“Another Quantum which is thought to

have been transporting staff members ofMcDonald’s on their way home after theirshift, got in the way of the police which led

the police to think that the twovehiclesweretogether. Two of McDonald’s staff werecaught in the crossfire resulting in the twooccupants being killed,” Raburabu says.Two of the alleged robberswere also killed

in the other vehiclefurther away.Robert Daniels,

spokesperson of theprovince’s Emergen-cy Medical and Fo-rensic Pathology Ser-vices, confirmed thedeaths and injuries.Daniels says three

men and one adult fe-male suffered fatalgunshot wounds.The bodies of two

men were discovered in Parliament Streetin Mfuleni and the bodies of the other maleand female (the staff members) were locatedin Hindle Road nearby.The ambulance services rushed six other

patientswithgunshotwounds to theNetcare911 Kuils River Hospital.“The six were all McDonald’s staff,” Dan-

iels says.He said three were discharged the same

morning and the other three were still beingtreated and were in a stable condition.Plato said the shooting incidents deeply

concern himaboutwhat appears to be exces-

sive use of force by the police where civil-ians are involved.“This is the second incident in recent

weeks where police apparently have openedfire on innocent people due to mistakenidentity or involvement in separate inci-dents of crime.“There are too many questions arising

from these incidents which cannot be leftunanswered. As part of my oversight man-date over policing in the province I am re-questing a full update by the provincial po-lice management on what they are doing toavoid the loss of life, suspect or not, whenintercepting and investigating criminal ac-tivities,” Plato says.

officer, Greg Solomon, shared his condolen-ces with the family of those who had passedaway on Monday.“Support is being provided to those in-

volved in the incident, the families of the vic-tims and the staff in the restaurant, traumacounselling will take place.“The safety and security of our staff is of

the utmost importance to us. We are work-ing closely with the relevant authorities intheir investigation,” Solomon says. He add-ed they were shocked and deeply saddenedat the death of two of their valued employeesand the injuries sustained by the others.

Ravensmead police are committed inbringing about change to the commu-nity in which they serve through their

daily door-to-door crime prevention cam-paign.Last week Warrant Officer Mark Wicks

along with several of his colleagues took tothe streets in Sector 2 where they went fromdoor to door to speak to residents about ser-vice delivery and to hand out crime preven-tion tips.“We have to engage with the community

if we want to gain their trust and throughthis door-to-door campaign we have seen aremarkable change in the behaviour of thecommunity when it comes to them commu-nicating to us,” he says.The door-to-door campaign gives police of-

ficers the opportunity to visit residents indi-

vidually and talk to them about their con-cerns and to also find out if they have anyinformation which they would like to sharewith the police.“We find that people often refrain from re-

porting a crime or their concerns at the po-lice station out of fear of being victimised.We want them to know they can rely on usto protect them when they divulge informa-tion to us,” Wicks says.Through this campaign residents have

but to educate the community – especiallythe youth. Children should be in school get-ting an education, not sitting on street cor-ners. Their parentsneed to enforce rules andensure their children adhere to them, espe-ciallywhen it comes to themmaking choicesabout school or the friends they socialisewith,” he says.A resident who spoke to TygerBurger on

condition of anonymity, says she fearsspeaking out about what goes on in the com-munity. “I am scared to speak up aboutwhatI see here as it is difficult to trust anyone.I prefer to keep to myself and rather havesomeone else speak up about it. I know Ishould be able to trust the police, but I havebeen let down by thembefore and choose notto engage with them at all,” she says.She is also concerned out the number of

childrenwho do not attend school and spendtheir time in the park or on street corners.“Their parents need to be more involved

in their lives and check on them to see whothey are socialising with, which could ex-plain why their children are not in school.I would hate to see more children end up ingangs – it is a battle to get themout once theyare in. They do as they please, which is notright and not fair to those who are workinghard but have to live among the negative ele-ments,” she says.Wicks adds that the campaign will contin-

ue to run daily to ensure the community isaware of how serious police are about mak-ing a change and working with them.“We urge them to join us in this fight

against gangsterism and crime and to en-gage with us,” he says.

Ravensmead police require the sup-port of more volunteers to assist themin fulfilling their trauma counselling

duties.The volunteers who currently work at

the station have basic training providingemotional support and practical assistanceto survivors of violence and/or crime inthe Ravensmead police precinct.

Although the Victims of Violence Trau-ma Room is situated on the police station’spremises, the services provided are freeand confidential as the organisation is in-

dependent.The volunteers are guided by police on

a daily basis whereby they are called to as-sist when someone has been a victim ofcrime or when assistance is needed tocounsel someone at a crime scene. Theirmain objective is to assist victims of vari-ous crimes at any time of the day.

Warrant Officer Mark Wicks, spokesper-son for Ravensmead police, says anyonewanting to volunteer their time must re-member that confidentiality, privacy andcommitment are all prerequisites for thisposition.

“We are reaching out to the public to be-come part of a selfless, dedicated, caring

team, working with and for your communi-ty,” Wicks says.

Other requires for the position as a vol-unteer counsellor include having goodcommunication and listening skills, will-ing to undergo a criminal check, preparedto go through a compulsory probation peri-od during which training will be provided,not be younger than 21, emotionally andmentally stable and not have any unre-solved trauma.

“Volunteers are expected to be dedicatedand show commitment to the position,obey and follow the policies, must be awareof their role definition and willing to ad-here to it at all times, and they must have

a good support system in their personallives,” says Wicks.

As a non-profit organisation they are al-so in need of donations from the public toassist them in helping victims of crime orviolence. “We are in need of a number ofitems which include socks, underwear,clothes, nappies, coffee, tea, any non-per-ishable goods and toys for children. Asoccer festival at the Strandfonteinsports complex starts on Saturday.The “By theSea” tournamenthosted

by Strandfontein AFC is expected to bringdroves of spectators to witness the 13th an-nual showpiece of u.13 soccer players com-peting for cup glory.The event has been able to attract clubs

from all over for a number of years to feaston and develop players by participating inthe u.13 event.At the same time a carnival atmosphere

entices clubs and spectators alike to share

in the thrills and spills of the soccer talentthe youth event brings.The launch for this year’s tournamentwas

held at the Strandfontein Civic Centre lastWednesday.The 32 teams participating were divided

into eight groups of four teams each.With major sponsors such as Coolag,

Strandfontein AFC has been able to not onlyhost the annual tournament, but improve onthe quality on offer for the young soccerplayers and their administrators.And with other sponsors like Umbro and

Jive, the organisers believe this year’s tour-nament will be the best and most exciting

one staged throughout its history.Previous winners have been academies

like Fish Hoek (2013), Ajax Cape Town (2014)and Old Mutual last year.The teams will be competing for R2 000 in

the winners’ section.The championship team will also receive

a floating trophy, a keepsake trophy and 20individual medals.The runner-up team will receive R750 and

a trophy. The losing semi-finalists will bothpocket R400 in prize money.In the plate section the crownwinnerswill

receive R500 and keepsake trophy while thelosing finalist will pocket R400.

The shield section champions will beawarded R350 and a keepsake trophy, withthe runners-up smiling to the bank withR300.Amongst the individual awards up for

grabs, the player of the tournament will winR250 and receive a medal and trophy.Likewise the goalkeeper, top goal scorer,

manager of the tournament as well as teamof the fair play award will also win R250, amedal and trophy.The tournament kicks off on Saturday at

09:00 and ends at 18:00 each day, except forthe Sunday at about 16:00 with the prize giv-ing.

Having cleared the gunge from their ex-hausts after the opening meeting of theWingfield Motors sponsored Power Seriesat Killarney last month, competitors arenow preparing to shoot the lights out dur-ing the second round on Saturday.Adding to the excitement will be the ap-

pearance of two top British drivers in theV8 Masters events. Stephen Young, who isbased in London, has become a regular inthese parts and it came as no real surprisewhen he won one of the races during thefirst round. However Pat Gormley has notbeen to the Cape before andmay need timeto get used to the track.One certainty is that neither of them can

expect any mercy from local hotshots likechampion Richard Schreuder, Craig Jar-vis, Franco Donadio and Charles Arton.Then, although it didn’t win, Dave Row-

ley’s historic VW Beetle captured thehearts of the spectators in the Fine Carevents, a category now sponsored by KentHomes. Giving as good as he got, Rowleyeventually settled for secondnot far behindGeoffBihl’s extremelyquickPorsche 944 S.Two others who endeared themselves to

the crowd that day, were 15-year-old For-mula Mygale driver Joshua Dolinschek

and Dee–Jay Booysen in his home builtFerrari (sort of) lookalike in the singleseater Formula Libre category. But whileDolinschek, who is the youngest main cir-cuit driver in the Western Cape, snatchedan overall victory, Booysen was only ableto complete one race and finished welldown on the points tally.It is going to be interesting to see him in

action during a (hopefully) trouble freeround. Nick Adcock was one of the mostprominent drivers who missed the firstround of the Makita Formula Supercarevents in order to compete in the Africa6-hour endurance race at Phakisa in theFree State.His stay-away was certainly justified

whenhe (andhis co-drivers)went on towinthe gruelling event in fine style.Moving on to the Crossley and Webb

Sports & GT events, if Adcock is at thewheel of the French Ligier that he drovein the 6-Hour, his battle with former title-holder Francis Carruthers (Juno SS3) andDawie Joubert in his Lotus Exige, could beanother one of the meeting’s highlights.With 18 races on the programme and a

plethora of new kiddie and family attrac-tions at Killarney, there should be some-thing for everybody at the complex on Sat-urday.
