CHRIST THE K ING

Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth.

— Revelation 1:5

Dear Parishioners,

Thanks to all of you who celebrated with us this past Thanksgiving. We appreciate all of you who were able to bring bags of non-perishable food items for the less fortunate. The outpouring of generosity is tremendous! We are proud of our Holy Family!!

Next Sunday, December 2nd, we begin the Advent season with the First Sunday of Advent. At that time, we begin a new liturgical year in the life of the church. It is a year of grace, and we will switch to the Sunday readings Cycle C and Daily Mass Cycle I.

Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). Advent devotions including the Advent wreath remind us of the meaning of the season.

We have a number of different Christmas charitable outreaches. Information is forthcoming on the St. Vincent de Paul Adopt a Family program, envelopes for our sister parish in Haiti and the Holy Family Toy Drive. All of these are very important and we appreciate your being a part of these opportunities to help the less fortunate. Thank you in advance!!

We will have the annual “Triduo” of prayers preceding the Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration at 6:30 AM (in Spanish) on Wednesday, December 12th. These three nights are in Spanish and take place Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Dec 9-11 at 7 PM in the church.

Continued from “Family Matters … 15 Wise Insights from Padre Pio” (now known as St. Pio) in the National Catholic Register:

9. Often place your confidence in divine Providence and be assured that sooner heaven and earth shall pass away than that the Lord neglect to protect you.

10. Kneel down and render the tribute of your presence and devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Confide all your needs to him, along with those of others. Speak to him with filial abandonment, give free rein to your heart, and give him complete freedom to work in you as he thinks best. [to be continued] With gratitude – Fr. Jim Bevacqua, Pastor 818-247-2222 x225, [email protected]

ADVENT CANDLES

Sunday, December 2nd marks the beginning of Advent. Advent is a period of hope, a time of our spiritual preparation for Christmas.

At Christmas, we celebrate the birthday of Jesus, our Lord and Prince of Peace. Like Lent, Advent is a time of more prayers, fasting, and charity. Purple is the liturgical color. Simbang Gabi and Las Posadas are examples of Advent traditions for Filipinos and Mexicans respectively.

One of the best symbols of Advent is the Advent Wreath which is made of four (4) candles arranged in a circle of evergreens. On each Sunday of Advent, we light the candles at Mass. The purple candles are lit during the first, second, and fourth Sundays. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday which marks the pivotal period close to Christmas. In unity with the church and promote a meaningful celebration for families, everyone is encouraged to have an Advent Wreath in their homes. The Advent Wreath should be part of your home like the Christmas tree and Nativity scene. Boxes of Advent Can-dles are available in the parish office and church patio after Masses.

AROUND THE DIOCESE

MESSAGE FROM BISHOP BRENNAN Request for Support for Victims of the Recent Wildfires The recent wildfires in Southern California, including in the northern part of the San Fernando Region, have forced thousands to flee from their homes and left many without work because of the businesses destroyed or severely impacted. Many people have been left with nowhere to go and the immediate need for food and shelter will soon become apparent. At least one of our parishes in the San Fernando Region voluntarily evacuated the Church premises, although no buildings were reported lost. It will take several days to learn the full extent of any damage or injury for those who have been impacted.

Earlier this year the Thomas Fire in the Santa Barbara Region, which affected so many of our own family and friends, taught us how important it is to be prepared to provide shelter, food and temporary financial support.

We are requesting your help in establishing a Fire Fund to provide immediate and critical support to those affected by the Woolsey and Hill fires.

Your donation can be mailed to: The Fire Fund c/o San Fernando Pastoral Region

15101 San Fernando Mission Blvd. Mission Hills, CA 91345

Or, simply place your check in the parish Sunday collection basket.

If you know of anyone who is in immediate need of temporary shelter, food or assistance, they can contact the pastor of their nearest Catholic church for help .

Hotel safety tips for the holiday season.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are popular travel times, as people gather with family and friends to celebrate the holidays. For many people, that means trading in the routines and established safety practices of home for time spent in a hotel. If you and your children are staying in a hotel, take a few minutes to go over the escape route in the event of a fire or emergency. Show your children how to dial out from the room —to call 911. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS® article “Family Travel and Vacation Safety (Are We There Yet?)” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
