Sometimes healing isn't all it's cracked up to be.
l've read stories of people with profound deafness who receive a cochlear implant.Their initial adjustment to the new world of sound can be traumatic-going fromsilence to a noisy world is shocking. l've also heard that when people with visionimpairments have some sight restored, they can find their new world too bright, too vivid, and actually painful. Think of how startled you feel when the lights
unexpectedly come on in a dark room. Now imagine how challenging a new worldof sight or sound would be if darkness or silence is all you've known.
I wonder how the man in today's Gospel reading felt when Jesus opened his ears
and his mouth. Were his first words praise for Jesus, or were they confusedquestions about this new world he hadn't heard before? Was the noise of the crowdwelcome or painful?
We might wish to be healed like this man-asking Jesus to open our eyes and
unclog our ears to experience him and the world more clearly. But we might end up
startled by unpleasant truths about ourselves.
The reading from James says God has chosen the poor and vulnerable, remindingus that we often disregard the poor, strive for riches, and become judgmental. When Jesus opens our eyes and ears, we can clearly see the divide between whatGod wants and how we act. Painful, indeed.
But this shouldn't prevent us from asking God to open us more fully. Jesus openedhimself completely in life and on the cross, pouring himself out for us. He
challenges us to do likewise-and it's the only way we'll grow into morecompassionate, faithful disciples.

de ar PAD Rf,
/^\ A friend told me tfu Church teaches that Muslims worship the\sg ioa ol,lUroham just as Christians and Jews do. I fini th|
dfficult to belieue-Christians turn the other cheek, but all you
hear about Islam is uiolence. How can we possibly worship the
same God?
DearJoan,
Joan
Paragraph 16 of the Second Vatican Council's 7964
document Dogmatic Constitution on the Church(Lumen Gentium) says Muslims "acknowledge theCreator" and are included in "the plan of salvation."'Wediffer in that we believe Christ is God, whereas Muslimsbelieve Christ was merely a prophet.

You're correct that followers ofJesus have a serious call
to be peacemakers. It was because of their belief inJesus, the ultimate man of peace, that the early Christianmartyrs were able to forgive the persecutors who were
about to take their lives and that Pope John Paul II was
able to forgive the man who tried to assassinate him. ButIslam is not a religion that advocates violence, and the
vast majority of the world's 1.5 billion Muslims are notviolent.
When you're reading headlines, it's important toremember that throughout history the reputations ofmany large groups-including tlv Catholic Church-hwebeen seriously damaged by the actions of a smallminority who do things that violate the group's beliefs.

Liturgy cornerIs your gift in MusiclDo you have a gift or talent in musicl The Music Ministry helps to
lead the Assembly in the praise and worship of God. In the OldTestament the first to enter the battles against the enemies of the
Israelites were the priests and trumpets (2 Chronicles 13).
Please consider giving back to God in service to your parish.
