Pastor’s Column: A Message from

Father Underwood

Thank you for Your Prayers! The past two

weekends, your priests were in quarantine, and two

of us were ill. Thank you to everyone for your

prayers and patience through this challenging time.

We felt the love of so many and are grateful to God

for healing and strength of faith. God bless you for

everything!

How is the Pastorate Forming? As you can

imagine, the collaboration of three parishes in a

pastorate structure is a true adventure with many

things to develop and perspectives to appreciate.

Over time, this structure will become clearer to us –

and I plan on sharing with you what that looks like as

elements unfold. Today, I want to share with you the

answer to one question: “Which priests will do

what?”

Which priests will do what? On day one (Aug 19),

people were instantly looking for answers to

questions in their specific ministry and so I received a

lot of phone messages. I quickly realized that we

needed to divide up areas of responsibility among the

priests, as I am unable to support all ministries by

myself. On page 4 of this bulletin you will see a list

of ministries and the priest contact for them. If you

are a ministry leader, please direct questions you

might have to the priest listed.

God Bless,

Fr. Eric Underwood

2020/2021 Religious Education

NEW START DATE: THIS Sunday, September 20,

ONLINE @ 11am

During the 2019/2020 Religious Education year, St.

Lawrence embarked on a Religious Education Program

that focused on Family Catechesis, the teaching of the

Catholic faith at home with a monthly theme and regular

weekly instruction led by the parents with the children

within the home. How prescient perhaps were Sheila

Henry and the catechetical staff to prepare families for

home ‘religious education’ lessons! Who could have

predicted that in March an unexpected COVID-19

pandemic would suddenly have families working,

schooling and LIVE streaming Mass from HOME? Now it

is September and many parents are still working from

home, many children have opted for online school from

home and many families have still not ventured back to in-

person Mass.

So goes Religious Education...faith taught online directly

into the home.

As we continue to navigate these unpredictable, uncertain

times, we welcome into our homes a Catholic faith and a

God that is a Comforting, Consistent, and an Unfailing

Presence in our daily lives.

For the foreseeable future all Religious Education classes

at St. Lawrence will be ONLINE weekly EVERY Sunday

BEGINNING THIS WEEKEND--September 20 at

11am. Books will be mailed to your homes (or can be

arranged to be picked up at the Parish Office). A Zoom

Code to access our online session will be sent to all

families via email who have registered for Religious

Education.

As a Catholic family we will gather together online each

Sunday at 11am, pray an opening prayer, highlight that

week of our Church liturgical year and reflect on a

monthly theme that shows God’s immense LOVE for us.

Then the children will break off into their individual

classes for a weekly lesson.

Thank you for entrusting your child(ren) to our program.

Thank you for your patience and please feel free to email

or call me with any questions or concerns.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL the weekend of October 10 and 11 will be the kickoff

weekend for the Muncie Pastorate for the Diocese’s Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). All

registered parishioners should have received an envelope in the mail from Bishop Doherty with

a brochure explaining the many ministries supported by this important appeal, as well as a

pledge card and return envelope for mailing. If you did not receive this mailing, brochures

and pledge cards in envelopes will be available on the tables in church the first of October.

The appeal provides the opportunity for each of us within our parish to share in the good works

of our diocesan family. By giving to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, you are helping to support

programs across our diocese for our retired priests as well as new seminarians, for our youth,

Newman Centers, deacons, prison ministry, pregnancy centers and so much more.

The weekend of October 10 and 11 you can bring your pledge card, placed in the envelope

provided in the mailing, to church and place in a basket so identified for this purpose. If you

prefer to mail your pledge card in the envelope provided, that is fine. At the bottom left of the

pledge card you received in the mail is a long number. Within that number is our Parish

Code, which is 6060. Be assured that your pledge or contribution will be credited to St.

Lawrence Parish. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the Parish Office. You can

also contribute online at www.dol-in.org/CMA.

September 20, 2020 ~~ 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

IS 55:6-9; PS 145:2-3, 8-9,17-18; PHIL 1:20C-24, 27A; MT 20:1-16A Though we can never fully grasp the infinite perfection of God and His ways, a basic knowledge of Scripture reveals that

God’s logic often differs from worldly logic.

Our first reading, from Isaiah, reminds us that God often thinks bigger than we do. “For my thoughts are not your

thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways

above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.” As His followers we must strive as best we can to think as God

does, using our time (and our talents and treasure, too) with eternity in mind.

In our Gospel passage from Matthew, Jesus offers us a glimpse of the “Godly logic” of the Father through a parable of a

landowner hiring workers for his vineyard. Some workers are called early in the day, others not until very late. Yet the

landowner pays them all a full day’s wage. This angered the laborers who had worked longest. But those laborers were

relying on human logic and human calculations. They were not thinking as God does.

This can happen to us Christian stewards as well. We can grumble and complain (at least internally) when we compare

ourselves to others and sense that not everyone is contributing as much as we are to the parish, the neighborhood, within our

family and so on. At those moments, we need to think bigger! We must remember that it is a great privilege to have been

called by the Father to work in His vineyard. Living the stewardship way of life brings us meaning, depth and purpose.

Let’s embrace this Godly thinking and thank Him for calling us to this way of life.
