We all know the parable of the lost sheep – or do we? What challenges us about this parable is that there are two versions of it, one in the gospel of Matthew and the other in the gospel of Luke. And the two are not the same. Matthew’s version is better known. In it the shepherd has 100 sheep and one goes astray. The shepherd leaves the 99 in the wilderness and =inds the sheep. In this version of the parable, the shepherd is usually seen to represent God, the God who seeks out any one of us who go astray. So, in Matthew, this parable is about God seeking out what is lost. Luke’s version, which is today’s gospel, is different. In his story, the sheep do not go astray. The shepherd loses it. Luke says, “Which one of you having 100 sheep and losing one of them…” So, if the shepherd in Luke loses the sheep, he cannot represent God. God loses nothing. The shepherd in Luke’s version must represent us, because we are the ones who sometimes lose what is important to us. Luke’s parable intends to re=lect upon that experience. How does a shepherd lose a sheep? By not noticing that is missing. It is hard to watch 100 animals, but a good shepherd knows how to keep his eye on what belongs to him. So Luke’s parable poses this question to us: What person or what thing of value could be missing from our lives and have you not noticed that it is gone? Could it be a son, daughter, or elderly whose circumstances have changed and now need you in a new way, and you are still living life as usual? Could it be a friend who has lost respect for you because of a mistake or insensitivity and has now left your life, and you have not realized the absence? Could it be a joy that once was part of your work or your marriage but now is missing? Our lives are full, as full as a =ield of 100 sheep, and that is why someone or something important can slip away without noticing that it is gone. Here is where the example of the shepherd in Luke’s version of the story is valuable. This shepherd, once he notices that he has lost something important, goes out immediately to =ind it. He makes it a top priority and puts everything else aside, including 99 other things which he also values. He is determined to =ind what has slipped away. This shepherd does not surround himself with regret, saying, “I should have noticed that she was leaving. I should have been more sensitive. This shepherd does not become stuck in self-pity, concluding, “I am really not that good a shepherd, or a parent, or a friend.” This shepherd chooses to act, to search out the one thing that is missing. He is determined to make his life whole again. Luke’s version of the sheep story calls us to that kind of action. Once we notice the one person or the one thing that we have lost in our lives, this parable encourages us to expend all our energy to =ind it. Now of course, there is no guarantee that we will be successful. Some people leave our lives, and we can never =ind a way to bring them back. Some blessings slip away, and we can never claim them again. But it is important to make the effort. Even if we have to leave behind 99 other valuable things, our attempt is worth it. This parable understands that when we =ind that one person, the one thing that has slipped away, there is a particular kind of joy. Then we will be able to say to our neighbors and our friends, “Rejoice with me, because of my daughter, my son, my friend, my joy that I lost I have now found again.”

INSPIRATIONFORTHEWEEK

We all struggle with worshipping things that are not God. These are things that we place in our lives and reverence more than God himself. Things such as our self-image, power, status, possessions, securities, and even ideologies can be allowed to make great claims on us. Sometimes, who “god” is for us is what we make this “god” out to be. Our self-constructed gods serve little purpose, other than placating us and making us feel better about ourselves and our world. This is not the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, nor the God whom Jesus called Father. The true God challenges us out of our comfort zones and pushes us to discover our potential. But, He does so patiently and with great love. He knows how =ickle we can be and is always eager to welcome us home.

The word "catechesis" means "to echo." Literally, we are to echo the good news of Jesus Christ to the world. This is not a suggestion; it is a command of our Lord. Some people are

called and set apart in our communities as catechists, those formally trained and charged with passing on the Gospel to children and adults, inside and outside of our communities. On Catechetical Sunday, we acknowledge them and remind

ourselves of the need for formation and growth in all of us. To be a catechist is a privileged calling, and today be sure to say "thank you" to one in your community.

However, it would be wrong on this day to only look to those bearing the NAME of catechist for an echoing of good news. ALL of us are called to echo and share the Gospel message.

Parents are the =irst and primary catechists in a child's life. But we also are important catechists in the lives of our coworkers, our spouses, our relatives, and our friends. Some say catechesis begins in the home, and while that is true, it

carries with it a parent/child connotation. But where does catechesis really begin? It begins in the HEART. This year on Catechetical Sunday, may your heart be moved to motivate you to share with others the good news of Jesus Christ.

We are in NEED OF A CHILDREN'S LITURGY LEADER/COLEADERS. This ministry includes being the main contact for questions that may arise within this ministry. This is an

established ministry that is very active, but does need someone to give it some oversite and direction. We are also in need of Children's Liturgy Homilists and Presiders. We have recently lost several volunteers who have moved on to other ministries

within our church. In order to offer this great ministry to our children, we need adult volunteers to help us out! If you are a parent, grandparent, or any adult looking for ways to spread the Good News, please prayerfully consider volunteering. This

ministry does require VIRTUS training. Please email Carmen Beyke @ [email protected] or call the cluster of=ice if you are interested.

We have changed the THURSDAYMASSTIME from morning TO7PMINTHEEVENING. This gives those that are unable to attend mass in the mornings an opportunity to participate in a

weekday mass. A morning prayer service is still offered. Because of this change, we will need some additional volunteers for ministries. We are still in need of additional sacristans and servers. Please contact the of=ice or email

Carmen Beyke at [email protected] if you are willing and able. This weekend we will have a SECONDCOLLECTION for our

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM. This is an opportunity for those who no longer have children in the program to continue giving =inancial support.

The Adult Choir is starting up again

soon! Come join our rehearsal on Wednesday, September 18 at 8:00pm..

Questions? Call/text Rose Lefeld at 419.305.3351.

We will be having a MINISTRY FAIR after our Stewardship Sunday

masses on 9/21 and 9/22 to learn more about our ministries. Did you know it takes over 80 volunteers every week just for masses alone? There are approximately 350 people (less than 1/3 of the congregation and 1/10 of our registered

parishioners) that currently assist in =illing those roles. We have ministries that have a critically low number of volunteers, speci=ically weekday sacristans and servers, Eucharistic

Ministers, and Eucharistic Ministers to the homebound. Representatives will be available at the church entrances for you to learn more about what each of these ministries entails as well as to answer any questions you may have.
