Second Collection This Weekend September 7 and 8

This weekend September 7 and 8 we will be taking up the National Collection for The Cath-olic University of America in Washington, D.C. Now, more than ever, the University is strate-gically positioned to pave the

way forward and help the laity play a significant role in healing and to educate our students and future leaders. Through hosting a conference series focused on laity response, and in creating an Institute for Diocesan Excel-lence in Administration (IDEA) where lay scholars and professionals can support clergy by providing expertise and accountability and in many other ways, Catholic Uni-versity is serving as a springboard in renewing and strengthening Catholicism in our country. Your support of the National Collection will help us solve issues within the Church and educate graduates who will leave campus ready to impact the Church, the nation, and the world. We appreciate your generosity. You can learn more at: collection.catholic.edu.

Please make checks payable to St. Michael’s Church.

Pastor’s Note: On two consecutive Sundays in last month’s parish bulletin we published in two parts an Instruc-

tion on the subject of cremation and related matters that was promulgated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican in Rome. That Instruction brought together in one document the Church’s teaching with respect to the cremation of Christian bodies for burial or entombment. The document was promulgated in August 2016 and was authored by Gerhard Cardinal Muller on behalf of the Congregation. Our bulletin publi-cation of the Instruction resulted in several favorable comments on the relevance, clarity, and usefulness of the information as well as a few comments that the particulars relating to Catholic teaching on cremation were sur-prising to some readers. I thought it would be helpful to re-publish Cardinal Muller’s Instruction in its entirety in one, single issue of the bulletin (here on page 4 and continued on page 5) so that it would be a convenient refer-ence and to make it available to those who might not have seen it in the August bulletins.

The Instruction states the principles that apply and govern when we Catholics are considering, and making plans for, certain end-of-life matters especially when cremation is one of the considerations. Cardinal Muller’s letter is published here for the purpose of providing accurate, definitive, and reliable in-formation on the Church’s teaching to enable our decisions to be well informed and our consciences to be well formed. If there are questions, please feel free to contact the parish priests for further guidance. Funeral directors in and around our area will be provided with a copy of this Instruction from the Vatican and a request that they advise their Cath-olic clients of these teachings of the Catholic Church if these topics become relevant dur-ing funeral planning.

1. To rise with Christ, we must die with Christ: we must “be away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Cor 5:8). With the Instruction Piam et Constantem of 5 July 1963, the then Holy Office established that “all necessary measures must be taken to pre-serve the practice of reverently burying the faithful departed”, adding however that cre-mation is not “opposed per se to the Christian religion” and that no longer should the sac-raments and funeral rites be denied to those who have asked that they be cremated, under the condition that this choice has not been made through “a denial of Christian dogmas,

the animosity of a secret society, or hatred of the Catholic religion and the Church”. Later this change in ecclesiastical discipline was incorporated into the Code of Canon Law (1983) and the Code of Canons of Oriental Churches (1990) ... the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has deemed opportune the publication of a new Instruction, with the intention of underlining the doctrinal and pastoral reasons for the preference of the burial of the remains of the faithful and to set out norms pertaining to the con-servation of ashes in the case of cremation. 2. Following the most ancient Christian tradition, the Church insistently recommends that the bodies of the deceased be buried in cemeteries or other sacred places. In memory of the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord, the mystery that illumines the Christian meaning of death, burial is above all the most fitting way to express faith and hope in the resurrection of the body. The Church who, as Mother, has ac-companied the Christian during his earthly pilgrimage, offers to the Father, in Christ, the child of her grace, and she commits to the earth, in hope, the seed of the body that will rise in glory... burial in a cemetery or another sacred place adequately corre-sponds to the piety and respect owed to the bodies of the faithful departed who through Baptism have become temples of the Holy Spirit and in which “as instru-ments and vessels the Spirit has carried out so many good works”.... the burial of the faithful departed in cemeteries or other sacred places encourages family members and the whole Christian community to pray for and remember the dead, while at the same

time fostering the veneration of martyrs and saints. 3. In circumstances when cremation is chosen because of sanitary, economic or social considerations, this choice must never violate the explicitly stated or the reasonably inferable wishes of the deceased faithful. The Church raises no doctrinal objections to this practice, since cremation of the deceased’s body does not affect his or her soul, nor does it prevent God, in his omnipotence, from raising up the deceased body to new life. Thus cremation, in and of itself, objectively negates neither the Christian doctrine of the soul’s immortality nor that of the resur-rection of the body.

(continued from page 4) 4. “The Church continues to prefer the practice of burying the bodies of the deceased, because this shows a great-er esteem towards the deceased. Nevertheless, cremation is not prohibited, “unless it was chosen for reasons con-trary to Christian doctrine”... In the absence of motives contrary to Christian doctrine, the Church, after the cele-bration of the funeral rite, accompanies the choice of cremation, providing the relevant liturgical and pastoral di-rectives, and taking particular care to avoid every form of scandal or the appearance of religious indifferentism.

5. When, for legitimate motives, cremation of the body has been chosen, the ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in a church or an area, which has been set aside for this purpose, and so dedicated by the competent ecclesial authority. From the earliest times, Christians have desired that the faithful departed become the objects of the Christian community’s prayers and remem-brance. Their tombs have become places of prayer, remembrance and reflection. The faithful departed remain part of the Church who believes “in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified, and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one Church”. The reservation of the ashes of the departed in a sacred place ensures that they are not excluded from the prayers and remembrance of their family or the Christian community. It prevents the faithful departed from being forgotten, or their re-mains from being shown a lack of respect, which eventuality is possible, most especially once the immediately subsequent generation has too passed away. Also it prevents any unfitting or superstitious practices.

6. For the reasons given above, the conservation of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence is not permitted. Only in grave and exceptional cases dependent on cultural conditions of a localized nature, may the Ordinary, in agreement with the Episcopal Conference or the Synod of Bishops of the Oriental Churches, concede permission for the conservation of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence. Nonetheless, the ashes may not be divided among various family members and due respect must be maintained regarding the circumstances of such a conservation.

7. In order that every appearance of pantheism, naturalism or nihilism be avoided, it is not permitted to scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way, nor may they be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects. These courses of action cannot be legitimized by an appeal to the sanitary, social, or economic motives that may have occasioned the choice of cremation.

8. When the deceased notoriously has requested cremation and the scattering of their ashes for reasons contrary to the Christian faith, a Christian funeral must be denied to that person according to the norms of the law.”

The Sovereign Pontiff Francis, in the Audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect on 18 March 2016, approved the present Instruction, adopted in the Ordinary Session of this Congregation on 2 March 2016, and or-dered its publication. Rome, from the Offices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 15 August 2016, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A Day of National Remembrance

On Saturday, September 14, our parish will join in the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children, calling on Catholics and pro-life Americans to honor the gravesites of our aborted brothers and sisters. Please see the insert in this bulletin for additional information. Solemn prayer vigils are being conduct-ed at gravesites across the United States in memory of aborted children. We are encouraged to carry on the spiritual mission of this Day of Remem-brance throughout the year by visiting a gravesite of aborted children and by offering of prayers of mourning, prayers for healing and reconciliation, and prayers for an end to abortion. Prayers for these intentions will be prayed at all of our Masses here at St. Michael’s on September 14 and the 9:00 a.m.

Mass on Saturday the 14th will be offered for these pro-life intentions.

Save the Date: Parish Family Games & Movie Night

Friday Evening – October 11, 2019

The committee is still working on a more exciting name for this event but for the time being it’s being called “Parish Family Games & Movie Night”: a parish-hosted “Friday evening get-together under the tent” on the front lawn of the church begin-

ning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 11. The tent will be put in place the previous day for the Parish Ministry Fair, Blood Drive, and Red Mass Reception during the October 11,

12, and 13 weekend. The Friday Games & Movie Night will include outdoor games (cornhole bean bag tossing, ladder golf, a fishing pond, miniature golf, KanJam (garbage can Frisbee tossing), and others),

an under-the-stars under-the-tent movie (title to be an-nounced; beginning at 7:30 and preceded by a cartoon or two), picnic-style food (hot dogs, bottled water, popcorn, pretzels, self-served ice cream...all at no charge), and other entertainment. The games and movie are intended for children ages 6-14 and their parents and grandparents. All ages are invited and welcome. Weather-permitting a wiffle-golf-ball-driving contest will be conducted on the rectory lawn for teenage and adult golf-ers. Please feel free to bring your own sandwiches and snacks; tables and chairs will be available on the church’s north lawn for picnic-style suppers. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks’ bulletins. To participate in the planning and staging as a committee member or volunteer, please contact Dotty O’Hara at the parish office.

Mass of the Holy Spirit Saturday, September 21st

at 5:00 PM

We will celebrate a Mass of the Holy Spirit on Saturday, September 21 at 5:00 p.m. in the Upper Church. All are invited and welcome to attend. The special focus of this Mass will be the beginning of the new 2019-2020 academic year. We will pray for God’s blessings upon students, teachers, parents, ad-ministrators, and staff and especially for the Holy Spirit’s gifts of knowledge, understand-ing, and wisdom.

My Dear Parishioners of St. Michael’s Parish Community:

This note is a bit late, but my gratefulness and prayers are constant for you. I have been busy preparing for the beginning of school that started Tuesday, September 3. The children and teachers are happy to be back, and we have quite a few new students who are happy to be here.

The students gave me a very warm welcome and unbe-knownst to me, one eighth grader wrote a welcome for me

that he proudly read during our assembly: “Sister Elizabeth Seton, we would like to take this oppor-tunity to welcome you and to thank you for choosing us as your new family. Thank you for choosing to help us on our spiritual and aca-demic journey. We hope to make you proud and we strive to remem-ber: Faith lifts the soul, hope sup-ports it, experience says it must

and love says let it be.” With these sentiments, I am confi-dent that our students will indeed take our dreams and bring them into the future!

Father Butler, all our wonderful priests and especially our parishioners, thank you for your warm welcome and en-couragement not only on the weekend but in the grocery store, on the boardwalk and beyond. It is so nice to be remembered and encouraged. Thank you to all who re-sponded so quickly to offer your talents. I will be in touch with each one of you.

Remember, every Thursday, there are three nuns down the road a bit praying for each one of you. God bless you. Sister Elizabeth Seton Principal, St. Jerome’s School

The Diocese of Trenton’s 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is in its sixth month. It commenced here at St. Michael’s during the weekend of February 23rd. The Diocese-wide goal is $7.0 million and approximately $5,022,542 (71.7%) has been pledged or collected toward that Diocesan goal as of August 28, 2019 from 22,351 donors. Our parish goal (as noted in the bulletin and announced at week-end Masses) is $109,000. Our parish reached its goal with pledges during the 22nd campaign week and with actual collections during the 24th campaign week. These achievements were “firsts” for our parish in that we reached both goals (pledges and collections) approximately 19 weeks earlier this year than last year (July compared to November). And last year was the very first year in Ap-peal history and in St. Michael’s history that our parish reached its goal. Thank you to all who have contributed in any form to the Appeal. These successes in the Annual Appeal have resulted in a rebate to our parish of $23,729 last year and an estimated rebate of approximately $16,000 this year (subject to final tabu-lations and adjustments). Those funds have been utilized for the Lower Church ladies room and men’s room renovations, the church’s foundation excavation and waterproofing, masonry and painting repairs in and around the church, CCD books and supplies, and other parish expenses. Also, our parish’s “raised” amount increased last week by $25. Thank you.

Currently, collections are at roughly 94.3% of our $116,940 total raised as indicated in the thermometer at left. And so we will continue to track these “Phase Two” collection efforts and progress reports in the bulletin during the next few weeks in order to seek to achieve 100% collection of all pledges.

May God bless the good people of St. Michael’s. And thank you for your generous contributions that help the Diocese provide the spiritual and social ser-vices that it renders to over 800,000 Catholics and others in our area.

*Our parish goal is $109,000. Pledges plus actual collections are currently an “amount raised” of $116,940; out of that amount the collections received are $110,253. This leaves a “pledge balance” of $6,687 (or approxi-mately 5.7%) in order to achieve 100% collection of all pledges. Contributions have been received from over 301 participants. Thank you!

If I am not, (in the state of grace), may it please God to put me in it; if I am, may it please God to keep me there. (St. Joan of Arc)

There are many simple and yet profound things we know as Catholics, but often take for granted and fail to grasp the significance of them in our own lives. I say this because of my past experience

speaking to adult groups and more recently doing baptismal preparation for new parents. I always find people most grateful for any insight that helps them to understand what they already know. (How’s that for a contradiction?) For example, when asked why they want the grace of baptism for their child the answer, if tenuously, is “to wash away Original Sin.” “Oh,” I respond, “so that dear, beautiful baby of yours is a dirty little sinner I guess,” I reply to now astounded parents. Before I lose my head I quickly add, “there must be something about Original Sin, and sin itself, we don’t quite get.” So I ask them to explain Original Sin and besides “eating the apple,” perhaps “disobedience” might be whispered. “Has your child been disobedient or done anything wrong?” I ask. “Well of course not!” My explanation for everyman then ensues:

As created human beings we are born into this world but we are not ready for Heaven. For that we require God’s grace to share in His divine nature, the Trinitarian life of God. This is the sanctifying grace God desires for every soul. This grace was given to Adam and Eve in the Garden. Seduced by Satan into believing it was “fake news,” in disobedience Adam and Eve rejected this unmerited gift and hence, Original Sin. Adam and Eve could not give to their children what they did not have and so all people – though created naturally good – come into existence “sinfully,” which means without supernatural grace. And without this supernatural gift we are geared more to self-ish motives, self-preservation over all things and worldly desires instead of pursuing everlasting life. Sin can be thought of as lacking God’s grace and results in all the actions, thoughts and inaction that we identify as sinful.

In baptism we are reborn by receiving the life of the Spirit who breaths charity into us and who forms the Church. It begins our supernatural vocation to eternal life. (Catechism of the Catholic Church (“CCC”)1997,1998) That’s why Tertulian could say Without baptism, salvation is attainable by none. The grace that was lost is restored, but as with Adam and Eve it can be rejected or go untapped. Baptized persons living uncharitable lives regrettably have not opened their gift. “So what is grace anyway?” I then ask. After a few blank stares “a gift from God” is the standard retort. “But what is that gift?” is the next question and it almost always goes unan-swered. This is what we need to absorb: Grace is a participation in the life of God. (CCC 1997) And what does that mean? Grace offers us the potential to free ourselves to love immeasurably, irretrievably, sacrificially and cre-atively as Christ did on the Cross. As such it is something we should passionately ask for ourselves and for all peo-ples.

Finally, it’s nice to be good but we are called to be holy, as I am (God the Father is) holy. Surrendering our-selves to the life of God, grace supernaturally and mystically brings us into union with Christ, perfecting us in love - the only way we can be made perfect. No, not in some lofty and grandiose way, but very down to earth in the “little way” St. Therese wrote about. If we can train ourselves to do our daily chores and to care for others without complaint but in gratitude for God’s love, every act from washing the clothes to patiently listening to others will bring us deeper into the life of God. It really is available right there at your very fingertips.
