EVER THOUGHT OF HAVING A CONSERVATORY?Versatile and affordable, conservatories are an excellent choice for homeowners requiring more space, or wanting to extend the garden into their home. They give a light an airy room to the house, which allows the sense of being in the garden - shielding us from the elements, and ‘extending’ the summer months. Perfect for sun rooms, but equally useful as a dining room, breakfast room, family den, study or even kitchen. One of the real advantages of conservatories over any other type of extension, is that they let in the light and warmth from the garden whilst at the same time providing shelter from the elements.For most, they have become a desirable part of modern-day living. In fact, over a quarter of a million were built in 2006.

For many people they are an affordable, ideal way of acquiring more living space without having to move house. In many instances planning permission is not needed and, provided they are well-built, they are almost guaranteed to add value to your property.

Conservatories have traditionally been built on the back of properties, leading out to the garden, although it is

possible to have them on the side or even the front. Since they are designed to feel part of the garden they are almost exclusively built on ground floor level, although there is no real reason (apart from planning implications) why they cannot be built on an upper level, depending on the design of your house.Different aspects bring with them different advantages and disadvantages, and careful consideration should be given to the direction of your proposed conservatory at the planning stage.East-facing - This will get the sun in the morning so is ideal for a breakfast room. It will not overheat in the middle of the day or evening.West-facing - This will get the sun from late afternoon onwards and provides good conditions for many plants.North-facing - This will get angled sun at the start and end of the day and, although it will not overheat in the summer, it could be bitterly cold in the winter. Unless you are using the conservatory solely as a summer sun-room, give careful consideration to how you are going to heat it.South-facing - This is excellent for catching the sun but will be unbearably hot in the summer with the sun overhead at the hottest time of the day. Give careful thought to ventilation and blinds.

ACUPUNCTURE & PAINPain is the body’s way of telling us something is wrong, therefore just treating the pain without dealing with the underlying cause would be irresponsible. However, there are often cases where the cause is being, or already has been, dealt with (the fire is out but the alarm is still going off!). In such cases it is appropriate to alleviate the pain as much as possible.Acupuncture is a proven method for delivering drug-free pain control (either alongside conventional treatment or as a remedy in its own right). NICE – the National Institute for Clinical Excellence – recommends that acupuncture be made available on the NHS for chronic lower back pain, due to evidence-based research demonstrating that acupuncture is one of the most effective therapies for back pain. Whilst lower back pain is arguably the most common form of pain acupuncturists are approached to deal with, we are asked to help people with a whole range of types of pain. Here’s a cross-section of what I’ve helped with over the last few months: • Lower back pain with chronic muscle spasm (caused by incorrect workplace sitting posture, lifting young children out of the car, horse riding accident - not all the same person I might add!). • Neck pain – again workstation posture was to blame. • Knee pain – osteoarthritis (acupuncture can’t fix that but it can reduce the pain). • Wrist pain – post-trauma recovery after skate-boarding accident. • Sciatic pain • Migraine – patient was taking prescription drugs to control them, but become pregnant so could no longer take them. • Neuritis following a bout of herpes zoster.

The list goes on, but I hope this gives you an idea of what acupuncture can do to help those in pain. As a colleague of mine says “suffering is optional” – so your choice, make the call and see if acupuncture can help you.

Summer always brings its’ own host of veterinary problems and we know that at Bilton we are in for a busy few months. However by taking precautions and using some preventive treatments, you can help your pet avoid a lot of the common problems.Cats love basking in the sun. White cats should have high factor (50+) sunblock applied to their ears every morning to prevent sunburn & a subsequent sun induced cancer. No sunblock & cancerous ears will have to be amputated.Kittens & puppies can’t resist playing with wasps & bees. Stings in the mouth can cause swelling & breathing difficulties, more often it will just be a swollen painful paw. An injection can be given to help with pain & swelling if necessary.

Hay-fever suffers will empathise with the many pets who suffer with pollen induced allergies. Cats & dogs become extremely

itchy & will lick and scratch themselves raw. Please bring them in for treatment the symptoms can be very effectively controlled giving huge relief to your pet. Sometimes the cause of the itch is a parasite. Fleas thrive in warm conditions, as do red mites in the hen house & midges which cause sweet itch in allergic horses. Make sure you are using effective anti-parasite treatments at the correct intervals. I always make sure I pop into the hen house in the late evening during the summer. Red mites only emerge from the cracks & crevices at night so you won’t be aware of an infestation if you only look during the day.Harvest mites will be appearing on the scene towards the end of July. Tiny pin-head sized mites but bright orange, so if you look closely they are easy to spot. It is only the larval stage which is parasitic and attaches to feed on cats, dogs & horses. It causes irritation and small weeping or

crusty spots. Gently scrape them off the skin, look at them with a magnifying glass and you will see the six legged little beasties. The adult mite has 8 legs.Arrow shaped grass seeds get everywhere, especially in spaniels. Once trapped, the

seed can only go in 1 direction which may be down the ear canal, into the tear duct or behind the eyelid. If trapped between the toes or in the armpit, the sharp seed will penetrate the skin and track into the underlying tissues. All walks should be followed by a close inspection for seeds.Finally, beware the heat. Dogs try to lose heat by panting. Old dogs that have laryngeal paralysis (easily recognised as their panting will have become very noisy) & squashed nose breeds such as bulldogs can get into extreme respiratory distress if they pant too much. Walking these dogs on a hot day can have rapidly fatal consequences.Most important of all, please, please remember, dogs really do die in hot cars & conservatories. Don’t let it happen this year. Keep your pet safe this summer.

If you wish a learner driver to drive your car you must advise your insurer immediately even if you have an ‘any driver’ policy. Many insurers will not insure learner drivers and some are not keen when a young driver has actually passed their test! This could mean you have to cancel your existing policy and take out a new one with another insurer, generally at great cost to you!

Reynolds Insurance Services are pleased to offer a new scheme for learner drivers which allows your existing policy to remain in force and unaffected whilst your son or daughter learns to drive and practice in your car. We are able to offer a short period policy on a monthly basis from under £90 per month in the learner driver’s name insuring your car compre-hensively. This covers any car valued at under £20,000 wwith an Insurance Rating of 16 or less on the old scale or 42 or less on the new scale. If there is a claim while the learner driver is in charge of your car this does not affect your No Claims Discount/Bonus.

Young drivers unfortunately have to pay a substantial amount for their car insurance but there are always schemes available which help in trying to reduce these costs such as black box technology which monitors the driving of the young driver and determines the risk profile of the driver.

You may well think that all car insurances are the same but you would be wrong.

It is becoming increasingly more difficult to compare like for like quotations and policies from the many different insurance companies in the market. Whether you use the internet, telephone or a broker many companies differ with the amount of excess they apply in the event of a claim, whether they automatically provide a courtesy car in the event of a claim, possible restrictions on travelling abroad and the service they provide, this last point is very important if you have a problem to discuss or needing help with a claim or making changes to your policy. A local broker is best placed to provide a local service both by phone and in person whilst remaining competitive.

To keep costs down some insurance companies may quote you with a high excess in the event of a claim which could easily be missed as many people are drawn initially to the premium only. The excess is the amount you have to pay in the event of a claim and the insurance company is responsible for the balance of the costs. Most companies will have an automatic compulsory excess and you can reduce your premium further by increasing this with a voluntary excess.

No Claims Discount/Bonus is a reward for not claiming during your policy year. In addition if you have claimed and your insurance company were then able to reclaim their costs from the other party you are usually able to get your excess refunded in this instance also. If you are unfortunate to be the victim of an uninsured driver you will usually lose some of your discount despite the fact

it was not your fault! Sometimes if there is a disagreement between the drivers involved in an accident you will lose some of your discount if your insurance company can not obtain agreement with the other party. Many insurance companies offer an initial no claims discount/bonus and once you have obtained the maximum discount/bonus you should consider protecting this. In the event of a claim where your insurance company hasn’t been able to reclaim the costs, protected bonus means you retain your entire bonus subject to the number of claims in a specified period.

If your car insurance policy includes cover for you driving any other cars please note that regardless of the type of cover you have on your own policy this is usually restricted to 3rd party cover only whilst driving someone else’s car. The other person’s car that you are driving must always be insured!

Please also note that it is very important to confirm to your broker or insurer how you use your car – meaning is it used only for personal use and travelling to and from a permanent place of work or will it be used for business or will it be used sometimes to go to a meeting or another location of work? It is easier for a broker to explain the correct level of cover you require after asking questions which could save many thousands of pounds if you otherwise could have had a policy made void due to incorrect information supplied to the insurer.
