For those who saw my article last year about representing GB, you will know that I am your local private Podiatrist whose hobby involves me travelling the country for

Dragon Boat races. As our summer race season approaches, I thought it would be good to keep you updated on my race progress, as well as regale you with stories of unusual or interesting medical cases that I see each month.

To start the series, I will introduce you to a middle-aged lady who presented with not just one, but two agonising lesions on the ball of her foot. These had been present for years and she had seen vari-ous medical professionals – GPs, other Podiatrists, and even a Foot Surgeon. None of them had been able to help her, and she was at her wit’s end with the pain which was getting worse by the day. For anyone who has suffered with their feet, you will know it is true that “when your feet hurt, you hurt all over”. Well this lady was depressed by her foot as it was hindering her work and leisure activities – she couldn’t even take her dog out for a walk!

So the challenge was on, and for those that know me I do rise to a challenge (remember my climb up Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the World a couple of year’s ago?). First, I had to see why these lesions were causing her such pain. It turns out that the one was an intractable verruca and the other an intractable corn. But these weren’t your regular, run-of the mill, foot problems that lots of people suffer with. These were neurovascular lesions where nerves and blood vessels grow-up into them, causing the intense discomfort our patient was experiencing. Every step taken on them sends a shooting pain through the lesion like walking on glass.

Fortunately, for our limping lady, she had found a Podiatrist with over 20 year experience of dealing with such problems (that’s me!), who also had at his clinic one of the few Low Level Laser Therapy units available in the region.

By using this advanced therapy in combination with exceptionally strong acids that are only licenced for use by HCPC Registered Podiatrists, I was able to burn away the troublesome nerves and blood vessels, and stimulate the patient’s immune system against the verruca virus.

Within a matter of weeks, the sad, stressed, debilitated face of this poor lady had turn into a beaming, happy one who was over the moon because she could once again take her dog for a walk. Both lesions had gone, and the patient kindly brought me bottle of champagne to celebrate. I’ll save that to see how the dragon boat races go this season! The moral of course is that foot problems can be cured if the right treatments are available and provided. You just need to know where to look for them.

So with that success under my belt, I will hope the positive effects will spur me on for our first Dragon Boat Race Day in Liverpool on the May Bank Holiday weekend. It’s a big moment for my Club as we won the Standard League last year and have been promoted to the Premiership. The top teams will all be keen to show us how tough it is in this uncharted territory for us, but I will rise to the challenge in the same way that I rise to Podiatry challenges like this month’s featured case. I just hope my team mates rise with me – after all, it’s destined by our name “Pershore Phoenix” - rising from the flames!

When Captain Chris Rigby retired from operational flying 2 years ago, he wondered how he could somehow utilise the flying knowledge that he had acquired over the last 40 years. With over 20,000 flight hours, mainly on the Boeing 737, and having worked for Britannia/Thomsons Airways, British Airways, easyJet and lastly Ryanair, he wanted to find something that would allow him to share that experience with everyone who was interested in flying.

Chris, who regularly lectures about aviation on cruise ships around the world and runs Fear of Flying courses, hit on the idea of buying and operating a flight simulator for the general public to live out their dream. He located a real motion simulator, a Boeing 737-800, originally owned by Sabena Airlines of Belgium, that was for sale. This was shipped to Coventry Airport last May and has since then it has had hundreds of wanabee pilots testing their metal in one of the most pressure environments in the world.Just recently a Boeing 747-400, which was one of Aer Lingus’s training machines has been added to the fleet and is now ready for boarding. Most of the instructors at Flight Simulators Midlands are retired airline pilots who have thousands of hours in aircraft of all types and have flown the world.Situated in the hangar of the Coventry Aeroplane Club, would be pilots first have a half hour briefing on how a modern aircraft flies and works. They then make their way past the real aircraft in the hangar before boarding the aircraft of their choice. Their instructor will make sure they are seated comfortably and strapped in and they are off, around the mountains of Salzburg or the skyscrapers of Hong Kong.Guests can choose from a number of different airports, worldwide, to fly to and

from and the flight is over all too soon. Highly recommended on Trip Advisor, this is an experience not to be missed. New simulators cost over £5million, so these are real boys toys.

Chris told the Advertiser that many professional pilots have visited FSM to brush up their skills before going for interviews with airlines and all have been successful so far.

Southam Carnival 27th May 2013This year’s theme is Nursery Rhyme Characters

We are aiming to enter the Guinness Book of World Records by

having the most number of people dressed in character, to achieve

this record we need to have more than 396 people as this is the

current record set in June 2011, so come on all of Southam - let’s

aim for it. The Carnival Queen this year is Kelsey, and her two at-

tendant are Chloe and Kasey. Thank you girls for volunteering,

all seems to running smoothly although we would like some more

carnival floats to enter, and people to walk in the procession.

Napton Show 25th MayCome & join us for a great day out at the Napton Show,

which this year will be held at

ITCHY PET, FLEAS AGAIN? NOT NECESSARILY…Through the spring and summer months a significant proportion of our case load will be itchy cats and dogs. As well as scratching, they will lick and chew themselves raw. Some owners report finding clumps of hair around the house, as the cat literally “pulls its hair out”. I personally have only once experienced such intense itchiness. Our children will vouch for the fact that our holidays require fleeces, wellies and water-proofs more often than sun cream. However one year we ventured to a Greek Island and after a few days I developed prickly heat rash which nearly drove me demented. Consequently I have huge sympathy for my itchy patient.

The itch sensation is the result of an allergic reaction causing release of histamine. We all know someone

who suffers from hay fever. Cats and dogs can also be allergic to pollens. House dust mites (a common cause of asthma in children) and food items such as gluten, dairy products, beef and chicken are other common allergens. Allergies to any of these can cause itching and recurrent skin and ear infections.

Unfortunately many pets suffering with allergies will require lifelong treatment. It is important for owners to accept that this condition, like hay fever can be controlled but often won’t be cured. If you think your pet may have an allergy do talk to your vet about doing a food trial as food allergies are the easiest to control once the offending food substance has been identified.

Symptoms due to environmental allergens are usually controlled by judicious use of cortisone.

Anti-histamines can be effective for some sufferers and cyclosporine is now available for cats and dogs. An alternative strategy which aims to cure the pet of the allergy is desensitisation. The pet is given tiny amounts of the substance it is allergic to, either as an injection or orally. Over time the amount of substance is gradually increased and the body learns to tolerate the allergen. Unfortunately it is expensive and the cure rate is not that high.

The key to successful management is to treat your pet as soon as it scratches or nibbles and be prepared to treat long-term. Ignoring the problem will result in chronic ear and skin changes that may never be resolved. Besides, being itchy is extremely unpleasant! I know!
