When Captain Chris Rigby retired from operational flying 2 years ago, he wondered how he could somehow utilise the flying knowledge that he had acquired over the last 40 years. With over 20,000 flight hours, mainly on the Boeing 737, and having worked for Britannia/Thomsons Airways, British Airways, easyJet and lastly Ryanair, he wanted to find something that would allow him to share that experience with everyone who was interested in flying.

Chris, who regularly lectures about aviation on cruise ships around the world and runs Fear of Flying courses, hit on the idea of buying and operating a flight simulator for the general public to live out their dream. He located a real motion simulator, a Boeing 737-800, originally owned by Sabena Airlines of Belgium, that was for sale. This was shipped to Coventry Airport last May and has since then it has had hundreds of wanabee pilots testing their metal in one of the most pressure environments in the world.Just recently a Boeing 747-400, which was one of Aer Lingus’s training machines has been added to the fleet and is now ready for boarding. Most of the instructors at Flight Simulators Midlands are retired airline pilots who have thousands of hours in aircraft of all types and have flown the world.Situated in the hangar of the Coventry Aeroplane Club, would be pilots first have a half hour briefing on how a modern aircraft flies and works. They then make their way past the real aircraft in the hangar before boarding the aircraft of their choice. Their instructor will make sure they are seated comfortably and strapped in and they are off, around the mountains of Salzburg or the skyscrapers of Hong Kong.Guests can choose from a number of different airports, worldwide, to fly to and

from and the flight is over all too soon. Highly recommended on Trip Advisor, this is an experience not to be missed. New simulators cost over £5million, so these are real boys toys.

Chris told the Advertiser that many professional pilots have visited FSM to brush up their skills before going for interviews with airlines and all have been successful so far.

Chris’s Fear of Flying courses, held at the company’s offices at Coventry Airport also include a quick flight in one of the simulators. They have helped many frightened fliers back into the air and anyone wanting help to overcome their fear can contact Chris through Flight Simulators Midlands.

PLANNING A HOLIDAY?If you haven’t already planned your holiday, you probably soon will be and if you are a pet owner that means planning for your pets as well. Taking your dog or cat to Europe became much easier last year when the requirements for PETS passports were relaxed. To qualify for a passport your pet (cat or dog) will need a microchip, and an up to date rabies vaccination, given at least 3 weeks prior to travel. 24-120 hours prior to re-entry into the UK, at the end of your holiday, you must find a vet to administer a tapeworm treatment to your pet and stamp the appropriate part of the pass-port. A few countries have slight variations in entry requirements so do check on the DEFRA PETS website.Before whooping with delight at the thought of Fido

accompanying you around the vine-yards of France or lying on the beach on the Costa del Sol, please consider carefully the full implications of European travel for your pet. It may be much hotter than at home and your pet may struggle with the heat. There are also a host of parasites that cats and dogs can pick up with potentially fatal consequences. Some such as heartworm can be prevented with appropriate treatments and the use of tick treatments can reduce the chance of tick borne disease such as Ehrlichiosis. Products that repel sandflies and mosquitoes will reduce the chance of Leishmaniasis. Unfortunately there is not a single anti-parasitic product that gives protection against all the parasites, ask your vet for advice.So foreign travel for your pet isn’t without its pitfalls and your pet might be happier spending 2 weeks in
