It’s that time of the year again! Full of good intentions on January 1st 2013, this was going to be the year when you finally stopped smoking, or stopped snacking on rubbish food, or saved more, or watched less television, or exercised more…! All those good intentions abandoned by February! If you made a resolution but failed to keep it, don’t be downhearted, you are not alone! Research has shown that 80% of people who make resolutions, fail to keep them, even though over half of them expected to be successful. Don’t give up. Spring is here and hopefully the cold, dreary days of winter are behind us. Spring is a time for optimism and new beginnings, so how about some spring resolutions!

So where did we go wrong in January? First of all you have to ac-knowledge that any real life-style change is going to be difficult. Habits are built up over a long period, often years, so to expect to change overnight is a ‘big ask’. To break any habit you need a plan.Be realistic, set achievable goals. You are more likely to manage small weekly targets than a general aim. So instead of “I am going to exercise more”, decide that this week I will go for a walk, or attend an exercise class, or go swimming, whatever seems possible. “I will lose one pound a week,” is far more likely to happen than resolving to “lose weight”. Setting small targets maximises the chances of success and nothing succeeds like success!

It has also been shown that resolutions are more sustainable when shared. Get all the help and support that is available. Join a group or form your own support network with friends or family. If you have been unsuccessful in the past, perhaps it is now the time to think about using

hypnosis to help you achieve your goals. It is all very well to have good intentions, but breaking a long-standing habit requires a fundamental change in thinking and behaviour that can be achieved with hypno-therapy. It is pleasant and relaxing and really works, so why not give it a go? Resolutions do not have to start on January 1st!

Southam to Paris Cycle Ride 25th to 29th May 2013No father should ever face having to tell their children that if they wanted to see their mummy whilst she was still alive, they needed to visit her in intensive care now as she wouldn’t be with us in the morning.Unfortunately though this sort of thing does happen. Fortunately, we are lucky to have people that are com-mitted, compassionate, tenacious and highly skilled professionals that, when faced with these situations, don’t just give up and move on but use everything at their disposal to try and get mummy home. In 2010 my wife, Louise, contracted Swine Flu. The virus went off like a bomb and quickly caused her organs to shut down. Within 24 hours of being admitted to hospital she was on a ventilator, kidney dialysis, a complex cocktail of powerful medications and so began a long long journey, during which we were taken to the brink many times over.Louise stayed on ‘life support’ and in Intensive care for 6 weeks. Yes that’s right, 6 weeks because of the Flu!

I know it sounds odd and I wouldn’t believe it either if I hadn’t spent those 6 weeks by her bedside surrounded by the most wonderful team of professionals doing everything they could, facing every challenge that Louise threw at them with compassionate tenacity that eventually meant after 8 weeks, instead of our girls having to go and say goodbye, they were able to celebrate, shouting hello with delight as she tentatively stepped through our front door at home. Put simply, Warwick Hospital Intensive Care staff saved not only Louise’s but also our lives and I will never be able to thank them enough.The average cost of a day in intensive care is £1500. I hope to be able to raise the equivalent of just one days admission so that there’ll be another £1500 to help provide the excellent level of care for whoever might need the same people, skills and resources that kept Lou alive and got her back home to us.My personal Mantra is “life is nothing if not an adventure.” So, to try and encourage you to donate some money I thought I’d try and design a little adventure for myself. One that will physically and mentally push me, be hard to achieve and require me to exhibit just a fraction of the tenacity that Warwick ICU had when helping us back in 2010/11.

Now, I’m not the fittest person in the world in fact nuts, bolts and screws help me get around every day, but I’ve come up with this ridiculous plan to cycle from our home in Southam, Warwickshire to Paris, France 350 miles(ish) not including the wet bit in the middle!I’m aiming to do it in 4 days supported by an expert team comprising of, Louise, Georgia and Alex and not forgetting Charlie the Beagle, the most recent member of the family resulting from the realisation after all we’ve been through that life is too short! - hence our chosen ‘pedigree’ name for him; ‘Life’s too short, Chase me Charlie!’My exact route is still undecided but I aim to do this during Whitsun week 2013 and will update this site with more details as my plans and training progress. The first dog I actually owned was Scamp, a rough coated Jack Russell who had a cerebellar impediment and walked as though he had had a few too many beers, Weasel another rough coat came next. She could walk in a straight line but had a dry eye. That’s the trouble with being a vet, you do end up with the rejects!

Raz was a big collie cross with the most amazing bushy grey eyebrows whose owner went to hospital and sadly didn’t come home and Pug was, inevitably, a little pug who had the sweetest nature but an obsession with catching imaginary flies. Sadly all of the above are now just fond memories.It was my husband who suggested we had a “normal” dog. We chose a Border T errier, sticking to the small, intelligent terrier traits but being a bit less feisty than the average Rus-sel. Reggie, who I have mentioned before, arrived as a stray so now we also have experience of German Shepherd and Labrador traits all in one! Just as breeds vary in temperament, they can also have their own particular health problems. Although the old adage “a cross-breed dog is a healthy dog” is not entirely true, certain breeds do have certain health issues. If I asked a vet to play a word association game, I bet I could predict a lot of their
