ABOUT SWARTLAND

www.swartland.co.za

STARTING SMALL, THINKING BIG

The Swartland story began in 1951 with ‘Oupa’ Hanekom

in the small town of Moorreesburg, a few wheat fields north

of Cape Town. He started supplying the local community

with hardware and electrical goods, but Oupa’s ambitions

lay far beyond the boundaries of Moorreesburg, and it

wasn’t long before joinery became Swartland’s specialty.

When Oupa’s son, ‘Oom’ Jurgens, took over the reins,

he brought new ideas to the business. One of them was his

personal philosophy of ‘continuous improvement’.

Today, this desire to constantly improve is an integral

part of the Swartland culture. It’s a place where traditional

values, such as hard work and pride in our craft, live in

harmony with new technology and inspired ideas.

The results speak for themselves – windows and doors

crafted to perfection and manufactured to last.

Our ranges offer the leading products in their class:

• Cape Culture Collection

Cape Culture offers an unrivalled 10 Year Guarantee*,

backed up by knowledgeable national service teams.

Our management systems have been approved by the

stringent South African Bureau of Standards and we are both

authorised and entitled to use the SABS ISO 9001 logo.

ABOUT SWARTLAND

www.swartland.co.za

THINK LONG TERM

‘Think Long Term’ guides us in everything we do,

from how we make our products, to how we source our

raw materials, to the value we place on relationships.

Our commitment to increased energy efficiency and

environmental sustainability is deeply ingrained.

We pride ourselves on our integrity and insist that

environmental resources be utilised in a sustainable way.

IN THE FOREST

We give preference to responsible loggers.

We monitor the harvesting process on-site, because with

responsible management, wood is a renewable resource.

IN THE FACTORY

Our processes are focused on reducing waste.

Our innovative recycling system uses excess wood chips to

fuel the boilers that kiln-dry our wood, and our hi-tech

air-management system dramatically reduces emissions.

IN THE HOME

Our products are designed to improve your home’s

thermal performance, keeping it as warm or cool as

you prefer. We’ve recently introduced Double-Glazed

windows to the market. Independent tests have proved

them to be the most energy-efficient windows in South

Africa. The inclusion of rubber seals on all windows

and selected doors also reduces temperature loss.

Wood is an extremely efficient insulator and its

carbon footprint is much smaller than other materials:

it takes 6.34 times the amount of energy to make an

aluminum window, 4.41 times to make a steel window

and 11.7 times to make a uPVC window* – than to

make the equivalent window from treated wood.

We’re fully committed to preserving our environment,

this process is on-going and continuously improving.

After all, we think long term.

DOUBLE-GLAZING

Swartland is proud to introduce our Double-Glazed

wooden windows to South Africa. Exclusive to

the Cape Culture Collection, this window is the most

energy-efficient tested window on the market.

Thicker wood sections, all-round rubber seals

and two panes of glass with a space sandwiched

in between, ensure increased thermal insulation and

soundproofing, while imported German-engineered

locking systems provide enhanced security.

All of which makes double-glazing the unrivalled

choice for those who want the best in aesthetic appeal,

construction and environmental performance.

Friction hinge –specially designedto handle the extraglass and thickerwindow frame.

Stainless steel, thumb-release handle.

Available in white, chrome and gold finish.

Double glazing comprises of two panes of glass, separated by

dehydrated air.

Multiple lockingmechanism ensures

a tight fit andenhances security.

This Double-Glazed window, with Low E glass, has a

U-Value of 1.9

CUSTOM MADE TO ORDER ONLY

“We knew we wanted double-glazing but

we weren’t sure whether to go with wood

or aluminium windows. Ultimately we found

that wood was better for the environment. It’s

renewable and has a lower carbon footprint.

And it just looks better.”

PRE-SEALED, PRE-GLAZED

Our new pre-sealed, pre-glazed products are designed

to make your life easier by saving you time and money.

To increase their ability to withstand the elements they

are sealed with our unique sealant, Maxicare®. This makes

them more water repellent and decay resistant, and helps

protect the wood from fungal attack and UV radiation.

To ensure these windows stand the test of time, we use

solid brass handles and stainless steel hinges.

GLAZING

These windows are available in different glazing

configurations, from 3 – 6mm clear glass, 6.38mm

laminated, toughened glass and 4mm Obscure glass.

WHAT ARE U-VALUES?

U-value is the rate at which heat is transmitted through

the arrangement of windows and doors in a building. It takes

into account all the components that make up the window or

door, such as the frame, the space between the two panes and

the glass itself. Glass coatings and the type of gas used between

the glass panes also form part of the U-value calculation.

Each glazing option has a different U-value and each

delivers different levels of thermal performance.

Some options are more resistant to impact, while others

offer better thermal and sound insulation.

For information on the glazing combinations that will

best suit your needs, please contact us on 086 110 2425.

HOW TO ORDER

Our pre-sealed, pre-glazed option is available

on all Cape Culture products, and can be ordered

through all leading builders merchants.

When ordering please specify a Maxicare® colour.

For assistance please contact us on 086 110 2425.“We’re very proud that our products

and systems are leading the way in energy

efficiency and sustainable design.

We’re continuously striving to improve our

environmental performance, our process

is on-going and we’re committed to it.”

CAPE CULTURE COLLECTION

Unique to our flagship range of windows and doors are:

• Energy efficient Double-Glazed windows

• The classic Sliding Sash window

• The Horizontal Gliding window

All products in this range have thicker timber sections

for added stability and aesthetic appeal, and come fitted

with rubber seals for increased thermal performance.

CUSTOM DESIGNS

For a dramatic statement or to allow even more

light in, we’ll design a window or door to your

specifications. When something special is called for,

call us, we can custom make it for you.

10 YEAR GUARANTEE

All products in this collection carry a manufacturer’s

10 YEAR Guarantee* for craftsmanship and for the kiln-

dried timber. This guarantee is subject to maintenance

conditions and building specifications, and for it to be

certified, all products must be sealed with Maxicare® in

accordance with the Easicare Maintenance Programme.

KILN-DRIED TO 8%

As part of our environmental responsibility, we have

always strived to make quality products that are durable

and long lasting. Which is why we kiln-dry our wood

to a moisture content of 8%. This process helps

keep the wood in perfect balance with atmospheric

conditions, thereby stabilising the timber and

minimising movement or warping.

AFTER SALES SERVICE

Our promise of quality doesn’t stop when you purchase

a Swartland product. Should an adjustment be required,

our service teams will respond to your needs promptly and

efficiently. All you need to do is to call us on 086 011 2425.

“I had a very specific idea for the

FUTURE CLASSICS

With the heritage and elegance of the classic

Sliding Sash, the Box Mock or the Cape Mock Sash

is the cost-effective way to get the sash look.

A thicker wooden frame distinguishes the

Box Mock from the Cape Mock Sash. Both styles

are made to Swartland’s superior standards.

It’s very rare these days to find

a company who’s willing to

stand by it’s products. I think it

says a lot about their values”

LATERAL THINKING

This window innovation is a revelation.

It allows walls to disappear in an instant, and

it’s exceptional gliding mechanism ensures it

glides open as effortlessly as it closes.

Like all Cape Culture products, this window offers

outstanding thermal performance. Factory-fitted

rubber seals will keep the desired temperature within.

As a security feature, the sliding leaf is on the inside

of the window, and it comes fitted with a lock.

Small pane windows are available on request.

PICTURE PERFECT

Full Pane windows provide maximum ventilation

with the minimum frame, and are the perfect way to

integrate the room and the view. Their side-hung

design catches the breeze, and helps create a sense of

space that perfectly complements open plan living.

Increase ventilation by adding a fanlight,

designed to release warm rising air.

LASTING IMPRESSION

Often called ‘cottage pane’ the divided

light of these popular windows adds a classic

beauty to any room. As with everything

we make, performance is crucial, so expect these

casement windows to swing open smoothly for

ventilation, and seal tightly for optimal

thermal insulation. Precisely fitted burglar

bars are available on request.

“We chose Swartland because

our home is an investment, and

while the quality of our life is

important right now, we’re also

adding value when we sell.”

TOP PERFORMER

These windows, also known as awning windows,

open from the bottom, letting the air circulate freely

while providing a protective shield from the elements.

Rubber seals provide outstanding thermal

insulation, giving you a versatile, modernist design

combined with practical performance.

“A big factor in our choice of windows was

that Swartland has been around for so long.

We didn’t want to buy from a company that

might not be around in a year or so. We

wanted to be sure we had a guarantee.”

MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATIONS

Timber is a natural product. Whilst we try to ensure that our timber has been properly kiln-dried, it is still subject to movement. This is due to normal fluctuations in humidity and temperature. It’s thus very important to protect your wooden windows and doors against the elements by sealing them regularly.

THIS CATALOGUE IS PRINTED ON SAPPI CAMELOT CARTRIDGE MATT ART - FULLY RECYCLABLE

MAY 2011

When your company has been in the family

for three generations, you tend to think long term,

and wonder what you’ll be doing 60 years from now.

(Hopefully the same, but bigger and better.)

The world has changed since ‘Oupa’ Hanekom

started the company in the 1950’s, yet some

things have remained steadfast; values like hard

work and pride in one’s craft.

From the start the Hanekoms have been

obsessed with the idea of ‘continuous

improvement’, and this has driven the business

ever since – resulting in manufacturing that’s

world class and in a league of its own.

We care about the products we make.

It’s our commitment and pride, and after three

generations we’ve turned it into a fine art.

Swartland is our legacy, which is why we’ve

made sustainability such an important part of

our business. We’re planning to be around for

quite a while, and insist that the environment

is managed in a sustainable way.
