While winter brings with it many positivesbuilding a snowman, sipping hot cocoa by the

fireplace, outdoor activitiesit also presentscertain areas of danger. However, by usingcommon sense regarding the main areas ofrisk, one can enjoy a happy, injury-free sea-son.

Slippery surfacesThe number one injury we tend to see in

winter is slips and falls, stated Dr. RobertBeyer, an emergency medicine physician whoworks primarily out of Community MemorialHospital in Menomonee Falls. Especiallywhen we have an excess of snow and ice, fallsare very common for us to see. Its very impor-tant to be careful.

Senior citizens should be especially cau-tious, said Beyer.

Their bones are more brittle and somefractureslike a hip fracturecan be pretty dev-astating, he said. Seniors should have some-one with them when they walk on ice and, ingeneral, have family, friends and neighborswho keep and eye on them in the wintermonths.

During the snowy season, the more salt, the better, the doctor said.

Use an abundance of salt, he urged. You can never use too much. Some salt on thedriveways, stairs, wherever youre walking,

    can prevent falls and injuries.

Cold temperaturesAs many as 700 people die each year

from frostbite or hypothermia, according to theNational Safety Council.

That, however, is the extreme and the dan-ger begins well before that, said Beyer, asfrostnipthe precursor to frostbiteis farmore likely.

Once the temperatures start to drop sig-nificantly below zero with the wind chill, youare at risk, the doctor said. Once you star t tofeel pain, that is frostnip. Frostbite is numbnessthat is analogous to burning.

Stay inside as much as possible, Beyersaid, but when heading outdoors follow thisadvice:

Cover all exposed areas. Layer clothing and wear proper materi-

al. As a rule, dress in layers, Beyer said.Cotton breathes, but it also absorbs mois-ture. In order to avoid this, active individuals

should wear synthetic clothing that traps heatwithout holding onto the dampness of sweat. Go inside periodically. If youre going

to be outside longer than 30 minutes, makesure you take breaks to go inside and warmup, said the doctor.

Fire and carbon monoxideWe tend to get a lot more chimney fires in

the winter, said John Delain, public educationcoordinator for the Germantown FireDepartment. This happens when people donthave their chimneys properly cleaned andinspected.

Delain recommends this be done once per

year and he also advises families to have acarbon monoxide detector on all levels of theirhouse.

Carbon monoxide emergencies also riseduring the winter months due to the use of thefurnace, he explained.

DrivingMotorists should carry a survival kit when

traveling, said Delain, especially since drivingemergencies are much more likely to occurduring the winter than any other season.

According to the Weather Channel web-site, the kit should include: blankets; a snow

shovel; a flashlight; hand warmers; matches;bottles of water and protein bars; a syphonpump; lightsticks; flares; and a whistle.

Delain also noted jumper cables, an icescraper and a fire extinguisher.

Its always good to have a supply kit inyour car, he said. A lot of stores even sellpre-made roadside emergency kits; they canbe obtained very conveniently.

Winter activitiesWisconsin winters are too long for people

to sit inside idle, said Beyer, but pointed outthat with hobbies such as skiing, sledding, snowmobiling and ice skating, awareness iskey.

As a rule, these sports are incredibly safeas long as you take a few precautions, said

the doctor. A few guidelines are: Go easy the first time out for the season.

Dont do a strenuous activity that youre notprepared for, said Beyer. Most of the sports-related activities we see are when its the indi-

viduals first time out for the year and theydont have their sea legs yet. Just like driving inthe snow for the first time each year, theres abit of a learning curve.

Watch the alcohol. Use alcohol inmoderation, said the doctor. A lot of thecrashes and fatalities we see with these activi-ties involve alcohol.

Also, he noted, alcohol numbs ones sens-es and depresses the central nervous system soa person may not feel the full effect of the coldweather.

They are more prone to things likehypothermia and dehydration, said Beyer.

Know your surroundings. Never walkon a lake or river if you dont know how thickthe ice is, said Delain, noting that various

state websites give ice reports. Use common sense with physical chores.Even with mundane tasks such as shoveling, caution should be used, said Delain.

The elderly and individuals with poor car-diovascular health should ask for assistance,he said.

Bottom line: Be smart in the winter.

Whatever youre doing, be extremelyaware of your surroundings and be mindful ofyour senses, said Beyer.

(NAPSI)-There seem to be countlessthings we don't think twice about when itcomes to protecting our families. You'd neverhit the road on a long road trip without buck-ling your baby in a car seat. And most peo-ple have a nightly habit of making sure thehouse is locked before going to bed. Bothare simple things that become a habit inorder to keep your family safe.

So why are Americans still not takingsimple actions to protect their families fromhome fires? According to the United States

Fire Administration (USFA), almost 2,500people die every year in home fires. Yetmost of these deaths occur in homes withoutworking smoke alarms.

Did you also know that cooking is themain cause of home fires and home fireinjuries? But it doesn't have to be that way, because Fire is Everyone's Fight. There aresimple steps you can take right now to

reduce your risk of a home fire that could notjust injure you or a loved one, but could takea life.

Put smoke alarms in your home to keepyour family safe. Make sure your smokealarms work. Your family is not safe if theycan't hear the smoke alarms. Test yoursmoke alarms. Push the test button. You willhear a loud noise. If you don't hear thenoise, you need a new battery or a newalarm. Fix this immediately.

    To protect against cooking-related fires

and injuries, keep an eye on what you fry. Most cooking fires start when someone isfrying food. Hot oil and grease can burnpeople and start fires. Be prepared whencooking and make the cooking area safe.Make sure children and pets stay at least 3feet away from a hot stove. Clean and clearthe area around the stove before you turnon the heat. Turn pot handles toward theback of the stove so no one can bump themor pull them over.

Just as the simple click of a sea t bel t canbecome a habit that decreases your chance

of being injured in a car crash, getting in thehabit of doing these fire safety practicesmay help save your life or the life of yourfamily one day. Remember, keeping yousafe isn't just the fire department's job.

Simple actions can make the difference in home fires
