The following information was taken fromthe National Cancer Survivors Day Web site.

On Sunday, June 7, 2015, tens of thou-sands of people around the world will gatherin their local communities to observe the 28thannual National Cancer Survivors Day®.

Hundreds of cities across the U.S. and abroadwill hold celebrations on this day to honor can-cer survivors, to bring attention to the ongoingchallenges of cancer survivorship, and to showthe world that life after a cancer diagnosis canbe fruitful, rewarding, and inspiring.

National Cancer Survivors Day® is anannual worldwide Celebration of Life that isheld on the first Sunday in June. It is the oneday each year when everyone joins forces torecognize the cancer survivors living in ourcommunities and raise awareness of the ongo-ing challenges they face. NCSD also providesan opportunity for cancer survivors to connectwith other survivors, celebrate the milestonesthey’ve achieved, and acknowledge the familymembers, friends, and healthcare profession-als who have supported them along the way.

“A ‘survivor’ is anyone living with a historyof cancer – from the moment of diagnosisthrough the remainder of life,” according to theNational Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, administrator for the celebration.

“For the vast majority of survivors, cancer

is no longer the automatic death sentence thatit was a few decades ago,” says Foundationspokesperson, Laura Shipp. “The reality is that, among U.S. adults, the 5-year relative survivalrate for all cancers combined is now approxi-mately 68 percent. In 1987, the year thatNCSD began, that number was just 56 per-cent.

“National Cancer Survivors Day® is anopportunity for cancer survivors to join witheach other and celebrate this new reality incancer survivorship that more people are livinglonger and better quality lives after cancerthan ever before. It is also an opportunity tobring attention to the challenges these sur-vivors face after diagnosis, and sometimeseven years after treatment ends.”

NCSD started in the United States in 1987,

and it is now celebrated worldwide in coun-tries including Canada, Australia, India, SouthAfrica, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Italy, andMalaysia, according to Shipp.

More Americans than ever are survivingcancer. According to the American Cancer

Society’s Cancer Treatment & SurFacts & Figures 2014 – 2015, there million cancer survivors alive in the Uand that number is expected to grow 19 million by 2024. Even though cadence rates are dropping, the numbecer survivors is rising due, in part, detection and better treatments. As thof cancer survivors continues to growmore important than ever to addunique needs of these survivors.

“To say that surviving cancer is ing would be an understatement,” sa“But it is a challenge that millions of p14.5 million in the U.S. alone – are ing. National Cancer Survivors Day®ebration of how far we’ve come in elife after cancer. However, the

Foundation hopes that National Survivors Day® also serves as a callfor more resources, research, and ipublic awareness to improve qualiafter cancer.”

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I have just been told I have 5 crowns withcavities under them. Two of these are part of bridges that areonly 1 year old. I floss diligently and brush twice a day. Whatcould cause cavities around bridges and crowns in such a shorttime.

Dear Ann, without seeing x-rays and doing an exam, I canonly tell you that the reasons for decay are as follows:1. Decay was left inside the tooth when the crowns wereplaced.

    2. The crowns did not fit properly.3. You are missing areas with your floss and you may have ahigh sugar diet.4. A microscopic dental lab wasn’t used which resulted incement leaching out and leaving a gap between the tooth andcrown that became more easily decayed.

Let’s examine these one by one. Decay left in a tooth. Whenthe crown was done, the filling under the crown may have beenold and in need of replacement. If this decay was not found andremoved meticulously, this decay is like a time bomb that willcontinue to eat away tooth structure even with a newlycemented crown. The solution to this is to make sure the dentistused magnifying glasses and caries stain detectors to insurethere is no decay left inside the tooth. Then a new filling or coreshould be done prior to preparing the tooth for a new crown. Itis essential that a crown sit on clean, healthy tooth structure.

Next, the crowns did not fit properly. The type of lab adentist selects and their attention to detail will determine howtight the crown fits on the tooth. The dentist usually selectsdental labs based upon how much the patient’s insurance paysto make the crown. If insurance reimbursement is low, thedentist will select a less expensive lab. Conversely, if a patienthas high esthetic demands, the dentist may use a masterceramist to insure the crowns will look better, fit better and lastlonger.

Today many crowns are sent overseas to receive bigdiscounts. Your dentist should be able to show you a “made inthe USA” verification if they have chosen a laboratory in theUnited States that uses microscopes for crown fabrication.

The next reason a crown may fail may be from poor oralhygiene habits and a high sugar diet. The sipping of sugarsodas, fruit juices, sports drinks and the inability to remove thissugar with proper brushing and flossing can result in cavities in

a short time. We recommend water and milk and coconutwater as great low sugar drinks! Have your hygienist watchyou brush and floss to assess your techniques!

Lastly, gaps under your crowns will allow cement to leachout. While there will always be a micro-gap between a crownand remaining tooth, the larger the gap, the more the cementcan leak out by being exposed to foods and salivary acids.Ask your dentist if they are using microscopic dental labs.

Do your research! If you have crowns that fail, have yourother crowns assessed to make sure they are serviceablebefore any further destruction can occur.

We invite our readers to schedule their comprehensive x-ray and examination visit. We can discuss implants, crowns, and cosmetic concerns while assuring you that we use thevery best materials and labs. Please call us at 414-464- 9021to schedule your visit today!PLEASE VISIT WWW.HAMPTONDENTALASSOCIATES.COM
