    MANAGING EDITOR

A company known for rails has its startin a basement, and also produces a prod-uct that plays off a day made famous on alegendary television comedy.

Wagner Companies is located at10600 Brown Deer Road and employsapproximately 150 people.

“We’re a Milwaukee-based manufactur-er, (and) it’s a family business,” WagnerCompanies Executive Vice President TonyLeto said in a recent interview.

The official legal entity is R & BWagner, Inc., and it is named after Robert

and Barbara Wagner, who are the childrenof company founder Adolph Wagner.Robert and Barbara Wagner are still withthe company.

“We like manufacturing in Milwaukee, and we enjoy doing that. We like producingas much as we can rather than importing it,”Leto said.

The company’s Web site states thatWagner “manufactures and stocks standardproducts for metal fabricators and producescustom products — primarily for handrails.”

The company is comprised of three divi-sions: architectural catalog, architecturalcustom and Wagner Industrial.

“What people know us for is metal com-ponents for railings — custom and stock,”Leto said.

The history of the Wagner family in the

metals industry dates back to 1850, when Julius Wagner s tarted a blacksmith shop in

Buffalo, NY. Wagner moved to Milwaukeein 1870 and started an iron shop.

What is now Wagner Companiesbegan to take shape in 1955 when AdolphWagner began working on products in hisbasement, designing approximately 40products, including two sizes of elbows, flanges and connectors.

“Today those forty-some products havegrown into 11,000 catalog items,” the com-pany’s Web site states.

Leto explained that while AdolphWagner created the products, he didn’thave the manufacturing capacity, so he out-sourced the manufacturing to his designs. He eventually bought the company that

made the parts, Advance Stamping Co.“The original designs are still with us.

We still make parts he designed in 1955,”Leto said.

Leto said the company has a very goodreputation for quality and has been in themetal railing industry for a long time.

“We tend to maintain our quality andour flexibility,” he said.

Over the years the company purchasedother firms, which were joined into one firmin 2001, and Wagner Companies movedall its operations into the Brown Deer Roadfacility in 2002.

Leto explained that the process of cre-ating railings involves bending and weld-ing, but how it is done has changed throughadvances in technology in both the engi-neering and the equipment that is more pro-

grammable in terms of bending and layingout the railings.

“It’s basically bending and welding, it’sjust how you get more efficient doing it,”Leto said.

The company has an internationalreach, selling products in the Canada,United Kingdom, Australia, and SouthAfrica. He said that while the company willgo to international trade shows, it will be

there to support local distributors sellingtheir products.“Certain products we have are patent-

ed and proprietary so we sell themthe world,” Leto said.

In 2008, the company souattained ISO certification. Leto ethat ISO is a system that certifies any has processes in place for maquality that are followed. He explaWagner does business for contra

    manufacturers.

WEDDING  SHOWCASEAfter all of the invitations have been

sent and RSVPs returned, engaged coupleswho are including a sit-down dinner as partof their wedding receptions must figure outthe seating arrangements for their guests.

Such a task can be both fun and stressful. The fun of making seating arrangements

stems from reuniting friends and familymembers who couples feel will enjoy oneanother's company and make the receptionthat much more fun. But feuding familymembers can make the task of assigning

seats somewhat stressful. Couples need notbe relationship experts to plan seatingarrangements that ensure guests have agood time. The following tips can help cou-ples enjoy the process of mapping out their

wedding reception seating assignments asmuch as possible.

    • Make assignments by hand. Whilethere is software designed specifically tohelp couples map out seating assignments, many couples find it easier to do the seat-ing assignments by hand, which allows cou-

ples more freedom to rearrange tables. Inaddition, making the seating arrangementsby hand ensures that couples spread outguests who might not get along.

    • Don't seat guests in the hopes of

quashing old conflicts. While the jovial spir-it of a wedding ceremony and receptionmight seem like the perfect atmosphere forfeuding friends or family members to burythe hatchet with regard to old conflicts, thisleaves open the potentially ugly possibilitythat such conflicts might escalate. Couples

don't want their weddings to bebered for all the wrong reasons, feuding factions apart when aseats.

    • Keep special needs guests

Some guests at the wedding may hcial needs, and this must be keptwhen planning seating assignmentwith medical conditions may bensitting close to the restroom, whiwith mobility issues might be best sting in a spot where waitstaff can mily recognize when they need soConsider sitting older guests, whomight not be as strong as it once

    How to manage seating arrangements

    Turn to paBy Tresa Erickson

Imagine spending a small fortune on awedding dress, only to ruin it an hour intothe reception when you accidentally bumpinto someone and slosh red wine all over

the front. Not a pretty picture, is it? Well, ifyou aren't careful, that is exactly what couldhappen to you.

Wedding dresses require protectionfrom the moment brides pick them up andbring them home. Once home, you mustfind a cool, dry place to hang your dress, preferably out of heavy traffic. Leave thedress in the garment bag, and in the eventyou need to try it on before the wedding,do so carefully, making sure you return thedress to the hanger with care.

Prior to your wedding, check with yourflorist about your flowers. Make sure yourbouquet will not stain your dress. If there is

a chance it will do so, have your florist takewhatever preventative steps are necessary.

On the day of your wedding, transportyour dress if necessary in the garment bag.If snow is an issue, make sure all walkwaysare shoveled before your arrival at the

venue. Put on your dress at the last possiblemoment, after your hair and makeup aredone, in an area free of food and drink.Use stain-free deodorant or antiperspirantand walk with the skirt lifted up to keep itfrom dragging the ground. After the cere-mony, be careful not to lean or sit on any-thing, and before getting into the car, makesure the seats are clean and dry.

Receptions can be tricky. In addition tomingling with guests, you will be participat-ing in loads of activities from dining todancing. Whatever you do, be careful, especially when eating and drinking.Should a stain occur, make certain you

have another outfit on hand to change intoso you an get out of your dress before thestain sets.

Protecting your wedding dress contin-ues after the reception is over. Changeimmediately and arrange to have your

gown dry cleaned as soon as possible. Ifyou desire, you may want to have the gownpreserved.

Your wedding gown is an investmentthat should be protected for a lifetime. Startthe day you pick it up from the dressmaker'sor bridal shop and don't let up until afteryour gown has been cleaned, and with anyluck, you will preserve your wedding dressfor generations to come.
