BELMOPAN, Cayo, Thursday,April 4, 2016: The fourth quarter preliminary esti-mates by the Statistical Institute ofBelize show that the level of economicactivity during the months of Octoberto December 2015 increased by 0.6percent when compared to the samequarter in 2014. The total value ofgoods and services produced inBelize was $661.1 million, up $3.7million from $657.4 million in 2014.For the first nine months of the year, the level of production in the countrywas 1.2 percent higher than it was in2014, as the relatively strong growthexperienced during the first quarterlargely offset declines in thesubsequent two quarters. Therefore, the economy grew by 1.0 percent inthe year 2015, just over $27 millionin goods and services.Jefte Ocihaeta, Statistician of SIB,says the primary sector continues tostruggle. The primary sector experi-enced a drop of 27.4 percent in thefourth quarter of 2015. This follows

a decline of 35.5 percent during thethird quarter as several majorindustries have bottomed out and areonly just showing signs of recovery.Marine exports decreased by 58percent, largely due to a significant fallin shrimp production. Most other

marine products experienced minimalgains. Banana shipments declined by25 percent due to lower thanexpected rainfall and an extended dryseason which affected the maturity ofthe fruit this year. It was not all badnews in the agriculture sectorhowever, as king crops such as citrusand sugar saw increases inproduction. With sugarcane deliveriesstarting a month earlier than in 2014,over 122 thousand metric tons ofsugarcane was delivered when nonewas delivered the year before. Alsoas anticipated, citrus fruit deliveriessaw some recovery during the monthsof October to December with anincrease in production of 2.5 thousandmetric tons of oranges. Livestockproduction decreased for thequarter, as both swine and cattle weredown. Secondary activities experiencedan increase of 8.4 percent for thethird quarter, driven by strongperformance in “Electricity andWater” and “Construction”.

Electriicty production increased by 18percent, with hydro generationsurging due to high reservoir waterlevels even prior to the start of therainy season. Likewise, waterdistribution increased by 8 percent asaccess was expanded to more ruralareas in the country. Construction in-creased by 5 percent, as municipalrecreational parks and otherinfrastructural development workscommenced. There was also anincrease in construction loans of 9percent. Manufacturing and Miningrecovered with a 3 percent increaseafter a drop of 7 percent in the thirdquarter. Though crude petroleumextraction declined significantly, beverage production experienced anincrease of 5 percent, mainly due toan 8 percent increase production ofbeer and 27 percent increase inproduction of soft drinks. The tertiary sector, which accountsfor about a half of Belize’s totaleconomy, grew by 3.6 percentduring the fourth quarter of 2015. Why Mexicans AreTroubled By Donald TrumpBY: Katy WatsonBBC Mexico and Central AmericaReporterBBC NEWS, Tuesday, April 5,2016: "Immigration is the only thingthat drives Donald Trump crazyapart from yellow number 5 haircolour," jokes Chumel Torres, aMexican comedian that has taken theinternet by storm. His show, El Pulso de la Republica(The Pulse of the Republic), isMexico's answer to the US late-nighttalk show The Daily Show. While there are few Mexicans whofind US Republican candidate DonaldTrump funny, laughing in the face ofadversity is the strategy Torres hasdecided to adopt and he seems to bedoing something right. The comedian, who originally trainedas an engineer, has 1.5 million subscrib-ers to his Spanish-language YouTubechannel and a growing num-ber of fans for his newer English-lan-guage version too. The appetite for Trump gags is highbut it is starting to wear thin, Torressays. "I'm tired of talking about Trumpbecause it's always the same," hetells me. "It's like [musician] Kanye West,it's like [reality TV stars] theKardashians. You know it's stupidso let's just move on - it's not funnyanymore. As a comedian you wantthe fresh kick and with Trump it'sjust the same jokes every time. It'sstarting to get dull." Joking aside, Donald Trump's riseis worrying for many Mexicans whorely on remittances from their familieswho live in the US. Dona Irlanda Lujano, 58, lives inCuautepec, a poor neighbourhood tothe north of Mexico City. She shares her simple house withher husband, daughter and twograndchildren. The neighbourhood they live in isright on the border with Mexico State, one of the most deprived parts of thecountry. Most of the people here havefamily living in the US or haverelatives who have spent time there andhave now returned. Dona Irlanda's three sons all madethe journey to the US illegally. They now live in Los Angeles andshe has not seen one of them for morethan 20 years. They talk on Skype at least once aweek and they send her between $100(£70) and $150 every month whichenables the family back in Mexico tolive. In recent months, they have hadseveral chats about the implications ofDonald Trump, who has made the fightagainst illegal immigration the mainplank of his campaign, winning theRepublican nomination.

"It's pretty worrying no?" shesays. "It's going to get much harderif they send all of theMexicans back here. My sons askme where they would find work. It'shard, you can't earn very much." Many here in Mexico have beenangered by Mr Trump, who has calledMexican migrants "criminals" and"rapists". For a long time, the Mexicanofficials refused to comment publicly, arguing it was not their place todiscuss US presidential candidates. But there seems to have been achange of heart recently. Foreign Secretary Claudia RuizMassieu called his policies andcomments "ignorant and racist" and, more recently, President EnriquePena Nieto compared Mr Trump'sstrident tone to that of Hitler andMussolini. But one of the fiercest reactionscame from former Mexican PresidentVicente Fox. Mr Fox responded to Mr Trump'sdemand that Mexico pay for aborder wall to keep Mexican migrantsfrom crossing to the US with a strongexpletive and an assurance thatMexico would not pay. In the past month, his language mayhave mellowed but his attitude has not. "He will never change and thisis a danger for the world," Mr Foxtold me, speaking of Mr Trump. "Well, we Mexicans may be small, but we are hot like chilli [peppers],so he shouldn't mess with us." Most Mexicans I have met feel thatwhether or not Mr Trump gets theRepublican nomination in the end, therelationship between the two countrieshas already been damaged. "I am surprised about theopinion of the Americans, I didn'tthink so many people would besupporting these crazy ideas," saysDaniela Robedo, 27. "I used to go every year tosummer camps [in the US]. If I hadkids right now I wouldn't send them. What if they meet these people withthese crazy ideas and they areinfluenced by it?" Mexican historian Enrique Krauzethinks the US presidential campaign isbringing out the worst in some Ameri-cans: "The nativism - the mistrustof the immigrant - has always beena feature of the United States. "They distrusted and hated theIrish, the Poles, the Jews, theItalians. Every wave since the 19thCentury was met with distrust. Andnow the new victims are theMexicans. Frankly, I cannot bemore offended by the words of thatignorant bigot saying that Mexicansare murderers and rapists." "He's truly playing into the mostobscure and darkest places of theAmerican soul," the Mexicanhistorian adds.
