By: Bart Mickler Organic vegetables are in highdemand due to safety concerns. Nottoo long ago all food grown in Belizewas organic. With commercialgrowing came agrochemicals andconcerns about the health of both thesoil and the consumer. In recent timesin Belize, the only way to assure thatfood is grown safely and organicallyis to grow your own. Consumers worldwide havebecome increasingly alarmed at theincidence of agrochemical poisons intheir food because indications arethat it is the cause of increases incancer and other serious diseases. There are many people who simplydon’t want produce that has beenexposed to agrochemicals or otherenvironmental toxins and GMOs. Some people are turning toorganically produced vegetables inBelize because they know thatagrochemicals are often not safelyused. Washing can‘t make vegetablessafe because some of the chemicalsare inside the produce. Belize, unfortunately, is not yet sufficientlymonitoring the safety of the vegetablesin the markets. There is nomechanism to guarantee that thefarmer harvests and sells according to

safe guidelines. How are consumersto find a nontoxic solution? Greenhouse technology has recentlymade the commercial growing oforganic produce easier and cheaper. In the last few years, small farmershave found they can grow certainvegetables more reliably undergreenhouses, thus increasing theirprofits. These sealed greenhousesnaturally decrease the need foragrochemicals and the result is saferproduce. The recent availability ofnatural “green seal” plant medicineshas also contributed to organicproduce becoming a reality. Manyfarmers have readily embraced this‘natural’ path due to their inherentsuspicion of agrochemical poisonsand their concern for their ownfamilies’ health. Consumers in Belize have comeone giant step closer to havingorganic produce as the result of theinitiative of a San Ignacio group. OnNovember 10, the Maya MountainLearning Exchange initiated a seriesof monthly symposiums on ‘Wellness’at the Maya Mountain Lodge. Thefirst 3 months are dedicated to“Finding Healthy Foods”. The firstsession, attended by 50 consumers, producers, and health food venders,

generated positive commitment bymany of the participants to makingorganic produce available. Participants immediately organizedan organic market place where safeproduce could be picked up aswell as purchased. There is muchenthusiasm for developing a largerbuying group before the Decembersymposium. After the meeting, afacebook page, “Cayo HealthyFood”, was launched and receivedover 400 ‘likes’ within 2 weeks. Afacebook group and google groupwere launched to broadcast a weeklyprice list of available products so thatconsumers could order by email ortelephone and pickup their order onSaturdays. Inquiries and orders are nowcoming from as far away as SanPedro, Belize City, and Punta Gorda. The advice this Cayo group is givingto other areas is to copy their effortby organizing a buyers’ group in theirown area and sharing shipping costs.

Demand may soon outstrip thesupply because people are seriouslyinterested in assuring safe food fortheir families. The farmers feel surethat any shortages will be temporaryand that, given time, they can catchup with the demand. An increasing number of farmersin San Antonio, Cayo, are nowmotivated to study and comply withOrganic Certification. Their interesthas been greatly influenced by thediscovery of this new organic buyermarket. They are already learningabout new ways to control pests andfungus organically assisted bymembers of the Belize OrganicAlliance (BOA), the Organic Unit atthe Central Farm Agriculture Station, and others. Certification is going to take time, but the producers are committingthemselves to maintaining theintegrity of their product byorganizing an organic farmers’ groupand insisting that their memberscomply with safe practices for organicgrowing.

By Rick Warr enContributed by: Janice Swift “The seeds that fell on rockyground are the people who gladlyhear the message and accept it.But they don’t have deep roots, and they believe only for a littlewhile. As soon as life gets hard, they give up.” (Luke8:13 CEV) During the springtime, all the grassin Southern California turns green, thewildflowers and poppies bloom, andit’s really pretty. But the moment therains stop, the hills turn brown again. Why? Because the grass has noroots. It can’t go down deep enoughto get water from the springs that aredeep beneath the ground. When there are no roots, when aplant is in shallow soil, it may initiallysprout and look good, but it doesn’tlast. The plants wither quickly becausethey don’t have roots. Luke 8:13 says, “The seeds thatfell on rocky ground are the peoplewho gladly hear the message andaccept it. But they don’t have deeproots, and they believe only for alittle while. As soon as life getshard, they give up” (CEV). A lot of times we hear God’s Wordand get excited about it, but wedon’t allow it to change us. We actsuperficially. We react emotionally. We’re moved impulsively. But wedon’t take the time to let it sink in. Do you really want to be that way?

Fruit Comes from Deep RootsNo! You want to be a deep person, not a shallow person. You want to bea person with deep spiritual roots sothat when recession comes and lastsseveral years, you’re able to keepbearing fruit. When the rough windscome and somebody in your familygets sick or somebody dies, the trialdoesn’t blow you away, becauseyou’ve got roots. How do you develop spiritual roots? There are two ways: a daily time withGod and a weekly small group timewith other believers. You’ve got tospend time alone with God, andyou’ve got to spend time with otherbelievers. If you’re not spending time withGod on a daily basis, you’re going todry up and blow away when thepressure is on. You won’t be able tohandle it. You’ve got to make time tolisten during a daily time with God.You have to sit and be quiet. You haveto read the Bible and talk to God.Play some music. If you like tojournal, do that. Whatever it takes tokeep the focus on God, do it! You’ve also got to have a weeklysmall group. Nobody has a completeperspective on life. Every one of ushas blinders on. The people in yoursmall group can see things in your lifeyou can’t see. That’s why we needeach other! You learn from the peoplein your small group as you encourageeach other and your roots go deeper.

The boy said: “It is the boxin which your wings are; and someday God is going to cut it open, and then you will fly away and bean angel.” Some day, God is going to revealthe fact to every Christian, thatthe very principles they nowrebel against, have been theinstruments which He used inperfecting their charactersand moulding them into perfection, polished stones for His greatbuilding yonder. —Cortland Myers Suffering is a wonderful fertilizerto the roots of character. It was slightly before Thanksgiving. The trip went reasonably well, and Iwas ready to go back. The airport onthe other end had turned a tacky redand green, and loudspeakers blaredannoying elevator renditions ofcherished Christmas carols. Beingsomeone who took Christmas veryseriously, and being slightly tired,I was not in a particularly goodmood. Going to check in my luggage(which, for some reason, hadbecome one suitcase with entirelynew clothes), I saw hangingmistletoe. Not real mistletoe, but verycheap plastic with red paint on someof the rounder parts and green painton some of the flatter and pointierparts, that could be taken for

mistletoe only in a very Picasso sortof way. With a considerable degree ofirritation and nowhere else to vent it,I said to the attendant, "Even if Iwere not married, I wouldnot want to kiss you undersuch a ghastly mockery ofmistletoe." "Sir , look more closely at wherethe mistletoe is." (pause) "Ok, I see that it's above theluggage scale, which is the placeyou'd have to step forward for akiss." "That's not why it's there."(pause) "Ok, I give up. Why is it there?" "It's there so you can kiss yourluggage goodbye."

Glaucoma is a term describinga group of ocular (eye) disordersresulting in optic nerve damage or lossto the field of vision, in many patientscaused by a clinically characterizedpressure buildup in regards to the fluidof the eye (intraocular pressure-associated optic neuropathy). In alarge number of glaucoma patients, however, the intraocular pressure(IOP) is normal, i.e. below 20 mmHg. These patients display the samesigns of glaucomatous damage asthose with an elevated IOP; theircondition is thus called normal tensionglaucoma. The disorders can beroughly divided into two main

Glaucoma categories, "open-angle" and"closed-angle" (or "angleclosure") glaucoma. The anglerefers to the area between the iris andcornea, through which fluid must flowto escape via the trabecularmeshwork, an area of tissue in theeye located around the base of thecornea. Closed-angle glaucoma canappear suddenly and is often painful;visual loss can progress quickly, butthe discomfort often leads patientsto seek medical attention beforepermanent damage occurs.Open-angle, chronic glaucoma tendsto progress at a slower rate andpatients may not notice they have lostvision until the disease has progressedsignificantly.

The increased intraocular pressurecan permanently damage visionin the affected eye(s) and lead toblindness if left untreated. It isnormally associated with increasedfluid pressure in the eye (aqueoushumour). The term "ocularhypertension" is used for peoplewith consistently raised intraocularpressure (IOP) without anyassociated optic nerve damage.Conversely, the term 'normal tension'or 'low tension' glaucoma is used forthose with optic nerve damage andassociated visual field loss, butnormal or low intraocular pressure. The nerve damage involves lossof retinal ganglion cells in acharacteristic pattern. The manydifferent subtypes of glaucoma can allbe considered to be a type of opticneuropathy. Raised intraocularpressure (above 21 mmHg or 2.8kPa) is the most important and onlymodifiable risk factor for glaucoma. However, some may have high eyepressure for years and never developdamage, while others can developnerve damage at a relatively lowpressure. Untreated glaucoma canlead to permanent damage of theoptic nerve and resultant visual fieldloss, which over time can progress toblindness. When the scleral venous sinus isblocked to where aqueous humor isnot reabsorbed at a faster rate than itis being secreted, elevated pressurewithin the eye occurs. Pressure in theanterior and posterior chamberspushes the lens back and putspressure on the vitreous body. Thevitreous body presses the retinaagainst the choroid and compressesthe blood vessels that feed the retina.Without a sufficient blood supply, retinal cells will die and the optic nerve

may atrophy, causing blindness.Typically, the nerves furthest from thefocal point fail first because of theirdistance from the central bloodsupply to the eye; thus, vision loss dueto glaucoma tends to start at the edgeswith the peripheral visual field, leading to progressively worse tunnelvision. Glaucoma has been called the"silent thief of sight" because theloss of vision often occurs graduallyover a long period of time, andsymptoms only occur when thedisease is quite advanced. Once lost, vision cannot normally be recovered,so treatment is aimed at preventingfurther loss. Worldwide, glaucoma isthe second-leading cause of blindnessafter cataracts. It is also the leadingcause of blindness among AfricanAmericans. Glaucoma affects one in200 people aged 50 and younger, andone in 10 over the age of 80. If thecondition is detected early enough, itis possible to arrest the developmentor slow the progression with medicaland surgical means.

Signs and symptoms Open-angle glaucoma accounts for90% of glaucoma cases in the UnitedStates. It is painless and does not haveacute attacks. The only signs aregradually progressive visual field loss, and optic nerve changes (increasedcup-to-disc ratio on fundoscopicexamination). Closed-angle glaucoma accountsfor less than 10% of glaucoma casesin the United States, but as many ashalf of glaucoma cases in othernations (particularly Asiancountries). About 10% of patientswith closed angles present with acuteangle closure crises characterized bysudden ocular pain, seeing halosContinues On Page 14

around lights, red eye, very highintraocular pressure (>30 mmHg),nausea and vomiting, suddenlydecreased vision, and a fixed, mid-dilated pupil. It is also associated withan oval pupil in some cases. Acuteangle closure is an emergency.

Causes Of the several causes for glaucoma, ocular hypertension (increasedpressure within the eye) is the mostimportant risk factor in mostglaucomas, but in some populations, only 50% of people with primaryopen-angle glaucoma actually haveelevated ocular pressure.

Dietary No clear evidence indicates vitamindeficiencies cause glaucoma inhumans. It follows, then, that oralvitamin supplementation is not arecommended treatment forglaucoma. Caffeine increasesintraocular pressure in those with

glaucoma, but does not appear toaffect normal individuals.

Ethnicity and sex Many people of East Asian descentare prone to developing angle closureglaucoma due to shallower anteriorchamber depths, with the majority ofcases of glaucoma in this populationconsisting of some form of angleclosure. Inuit also have a 20- to 40-times higher risk of developingprimary angle closure glaucoma.Women are three times more likelythan men to develop acute angleclosure glaucoma due to their

shallower anterior chambers. Peopleof African descent are three timesmore likely to develop primaryopen-angle glaucoma.

Genetics Positive family history is a riskfactor for glaucoma. The relative riskof having primary open-angleglaucoma (POAG) is increased abouttwo- to four-fold for individuals whohave a sibling with glaucoma.Glaucoma, particularly primaryopen-angle glaucoma, is associatedwith mutations in several differentgenes (including MYOC, ASB10,WDR36, NTF4, and TBK1genes), although most cases ofglaucoma do not involve these geneticmutations. Normal-tension glaucoma, which comprises one-third of POAG,is also associated with geneticmutations (including OPA1 andOPTN genes). Various rare congenital/genetic eyemalformations are associated withglaucoma. Occasionally, failure of thenormal third-trimester gestational

atrophy of the hyaloid canal and thetunica vasculosa lentis is associatedwith other anomalies. Angleclosure-induced ocular hypertensionand glaucomatous optic neuropathymay also occur with theseanomalies, and has been modelled inmice.

Other Other factors can cause glaucoma, known as "secondary glaucoma",including prolonged use of steroids(steroid-induced glaucoma);conditions that severely restrictblood flow to the eye, such assevere diabetic retinopathy andcentral retinal vein occlusion(neovascular glaucoma);ocular trauma (angle-recessionglaucoma); and uveitis (uveiticglaucoma). In a large study in theUK, glaucoma patients had a 29%increased incidence of systemichypertension compared to age- andsex-matched controls
