After extensive planning by theGarifuna Coalition U.S.A. itsPresident Jose Francisco Avilaand the Hondureños Contra ElSIDA President, Mrs. MirthaColon, the Garifuna communityhad the opportunity to meet withNew York City Mayor MichaelBloomberg yesterday July 14,2010 at Lincoln HospitalAuditorium in the Bronx. The Town Hall style meetingwas primarily to discuss issuesof concern to them. Also at the meeting were theMayor’s Commissioners for allthe various city departments aswell as the President of theUnited Garifuna AssociationMr. Alfonso Cayetano theoldest Garifuna association inNew York City which recentlyreopened its cultural “Wabatou”meaning “our house” at 202-APennsylvania Avenue inBrooklyn along with theChairman of the GarifunaCelebration Mass CommitteeMrs. Rosita Alvarez, theCounsel for the HonduranGovernment in New York Cityand other distinguished guest. The auditorium was packed tocapacity with standing spaceonly. The Garifuna people are amixture of African and CaribIndian descent that acculturatedwith each other on the island ofSt. Vincent in the early 1600’s. According to history, there wasa shipwreck with slaves whowere headed to some island inthe Caribbean and the slavesswam ashore this neighboringisland to save their lives andescape from captivity. Theysecretly hid in the caves from theEuropeans and the native CaribIndians until they were sighted. In the beginning war eruptedbetween these two groups but the

Caribs became impressed withthese Africans fighting skills andlater welcomed them on theisland and the acculturationprocess began. It is hard to tell which Africanethnic group the Garifunapeople derived from but thereare similarities with the Yoruba. The Carib Indians were in thehabit of conducting slave raidsfrom the French and British whooccupied other neighboringislands and brought them to theirisland which increased theacculturation with other Africanethnic groups. The language that they speakis a mixture of Carib, Africanand French. The French were thefirst Europeans to sight Blackpeople on this island. The Frenchattempted to take this islandaway by trying to convert theminto Christianity but theyresisted and drove the French offthe island. The British came behind theFrench and several warsoccurred between these twogroups until finally on March 11,1797 they were conquered andinterned on the island ofBaliceaux and subsequentlytaken as prisoners of war toseveral islands and the restdropped off on the island ofRoatan in Honduras on April12th, 1797. The Garifuna people hated thisisland due the lack of fertility ofthe soil to grow their food cropsand they sought permission tooccupy other lands along thecoastline of Honduras. In Honduras the Spanishchanged their names to Spanishnames and they left in massnumbers during the revolution-ary wars in the 1800’s toNicaragua, Guatemala andBelize where they reside up tothis day. Most of the Garifuna peoplein the world live in the UnitedStates, followed by Hondurasthen Belize. The word Garifuna is mostlyused to describe an individualand Garinagu for more than oneperson or group. The British hadpromised these people that theywere going to take them to abetter place not knowing thatthey were being exiled from theirhomeland “Yuremei”. No

matter where they live, they areclosely related to each other andmaintain ongoing relationshipamong themselves with theirculture intact despite theirdifficult experiences up to thisday. The Garifuna people are;warriors, resilient, autonomous, independent and spiritual. Theyare always committed to theirculture and family and will doanything to preserve their richculture. Along with their Caribbrothers and sisters they foughtmany wars against the Spanish,French and British to avoidEuropean domination. The welcome address duringthe town meeting was deliverredby Mrs. Mirtha Colon. Shestarted off by thanking MayorBloomberg for taking thetime out to come with hisCommissioners to listen to theconcerns of her people. She alsoencouraged her people to takethe opportunity to address all theissues that are of major concernto them in the Garifuna commu-nity. After her welcome address, she introduced the President ofthe Garifuna Coalition U.S.A.Mr. Jose Avila the designatedMaster of Ceremonies for theevent. Mr Avila then proceededto introduce Mayor Bloombergwho stepped to the podium andwas welcomed with greatapplauses by the audience. The Mayor thanked theassociations for inviting him tothe event and he said thank youin the Spanish and Garifunalanguages. He joked about hisproblem learning Spanish andsaid that Garifuna would bemuch more difficult for him tolearn. Most Garifuna people speaktwo to three languages inaddition to their native tonguebecause of their interactions withpeople from various cultures inthe countries where theyoriginally came from in St.Vincent and Central America. Mayor Bloomberg went onby thanking the Garifunacommunity for playing a vital anintegral part in the daily growthof New York City which isknown for its richness in culturaldiversity. He also spoke aboutthe hard economic times facingthe city. However, he reminded

the audience that New York Cityresidents are tough and fightingpeople and if they could haverebounded from the attack of911, they will be able to recoverfrom this economic crisis we arecurrently experiencing. Heoutlined some of the programsthat his administration hasembarked on to; create jobs, reduce crime, lower taxes andother areas to make life easier forNew York City residents. After the Mayor’s speech thefloor was opened for questionsand the audience took fulladvantage of the questioning. The questions had to do withissues concerning; education, housing, immigration, crime, rent, HIV Aids, employment, acultural center for the Garifunapeople through the Mayor ’soffice, the declaration of 19th

of November as GarifunaSettlement Day, businessassistance, telemarketing andcollection harassment frombusinesses and promises made tothe Garifuna community by theDinkins administration. TheMayor answered most of thequestions and for those he hadlittle or know knowledge about,he directed the questions to theCommissioners that dealt withthe respective areas. TheMayor pledged that he will dosomething as soon as he returnsto his office to make sure thathis administration puts in motionall the issues that are of concernto the Garifuna community herein New York City. The last Town HallMeeting that was held with theGarifuna community was in1991 when Mayor DavidDinkins the first Black Mayorwas in office nineteen years agoshortly after the Happyland firethat took many Garinagupeople’s lives. The Garifuna community wasthankful to Mayor Bloombergfor coming to the meetingand gave him a Garifunadrum as a gift. The Mayorhappily played the Garifunadrum and waved the audiencegoodbye. It is now left to these twoassociations who sponsoredthis event, to seek out all theother Garifuna associations inNew York City and work withthem hand in hand as brothersand sisters to accomplish alltheir goals and ensure that theMayor’s promises are fulfilled.

One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, buteven in the dim light of day, he couldsee she needed help. So he pulledup in front of her Mercedes andgot out. His Pontiac was stillsputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one hadstopped to help for the last hour orso. Was he going to hurt her? Hedidn't look safe; he looked poor andhungry. He could see that she wasfrightened, standing out there in thecold. He knew how she felt. It wasthat chill which only fear can put inyou. He said, “I'm here to help you,ma'am. Why don't you wait inthe car where it's warm? By theway, my name is BryanAnderson.” Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was badenough. Bryan crawled under thecar looking for a place to put thejack, skinning his knuckles a timeor two. Soon he was able to changethe tire. But he had to get dirty andhis hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lugnuts, she rolled down the windowand began to talk to him. She toldhim that she was from St. Louis andwas only just passing through. Shecouldn't thank him enough forcoming to her aid. Bryan just smiled as he closed hertrunk. The lady asked how muchshe owed him. Any amount wouldhave been all right with her. Shealready imagined all the awful thingsthat could have happened had henot stopped. Bryan never thoughttwice about being paid. This wasnot a job to him. This was helpingsomeone in need, and God knowsthere were plenty, who had givenhim a hand in the past. He had livedhis whole life that way, and it neveroccurred to him to act any otherway. He told her that if she reallywanted to pay him back, the nexttime she saw someone who neededhelp, she could give that person theassistance they needed, and Bryanadded, “And think of me.” He waited until she started her carand drove off. It had been a coldand depressing day, but he feltgood as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight. A few miles down the road thelady saw a small cafe. She went into grab a bite to eat, and take the

chill off before she made the last legof her trip home. It was a dingylooking restaurant. Outside weretwo old gas pumps. The wholescene was unfamiliar to her. Thewaitress came over and brought aclean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that evenbeing on her feet for the whole daycouldn't erase. The lady noticed thatthe wait ress was nearly eightmonths pregnant, but she never letthe strain and aches change herattitude. The old lady wonderedhow someone who had so littlecould be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan. After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to getchange for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped rightout the door. She was gone by thetime the waitress came back. Thewaitress wondered where the ladycould be. Then she noticedsomething written on the napkin. There were tears in her eyes whenshe read what the lady wrote: 'Youdon't owe me anything. I havebeen there too. Somebody oncehelped me out, the way I'mhelping you. If you really want topay me back, here is what you do:Do not let this chain of love endwith you.'Under the napkin were four more$100 bills. Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people toserve, but the waitress made itthrough another day. That nightwhen she got home from work andclimbed into bed, she was thinkingabout the money and what the ladyhad written. How could the ladyhave known how much she and herhusband needed it? With the babydue next month, it was going to behard.... She knew how worried herhusband was, and as he laysleeping next to her, she gave him asoft kiss and whispered soft andlow, “Everything's going to be allright. I love you, BryanAnderson.”
