A team of four policemen from the Belmopan based ADU were manning a Vehicle Check Point (VCP) on the Western Highway near its junction with the Iguana Creek Road in Blackman Eddy Village when at around 7:30 pm the team observed a car coming from the direction of San Ignacio heading towards Belmopan. The car was traveling behind a towhead truck with a trailer attached. Upon seeing the VCP, the car made a U-turn heading back in the direction from whence it came. Two members of the ADU team boarded the police mobile with lights flashing and siren blasting they set chase behind the fleeing car. When weighed in the presenceof Young and White the weedtipped the scale at 10.9 kilos. Both accused persons weresubsequently arrested and jointlycharged for drug trafficking. They appeared in court onMonday, June 7 where EricYoung pled guilty to the chargewhile Eamon White pled notguilty. Young was consequently finedten thousand dollars to be paidby September 30, 2010 indefault of paying the fine he willspend three years in jail. In the first surprising twist ofevents, apart from the fine Young

was additionally sentence to 3years imprisonment. Another surprising turn ofevents is that while Youngpled guilty, it was expectedthat the charge would havebeen withdrawn against theEamon White, NOT SO! Theprosecution informed the courtthat it will proceed with the drugtrafficking charge against White. He was consequently offeredbail in the sum of two thousanddollars and ordered to return tocourt on Tuesday, July 27, 2010. In a further surprising turn ofevents, with Young’s guiltyplea, no determination wasmade regarding the confiscationor otherwise of the carwhich remains parked on thecompound at the San IgnacioPolice Station.

Elodio Aragon Jr. and Lt.Col. David Jones from theBelize Defense Force on thesuccesses of Operation Jaguarrevealed that gangs, guns anddrugs are three of the mainculprits responsible for theescalation of crimes in Belize. The report outlined the amountof firearms and ammunitionsconfiscated, the various types ofdrugs found and the number ofarrest made for those found withdrugs and weapons. I am very disappointed that thereport makes no mention of thearrest of individuals for formingand operating illegal gangs thatare engaged in these criminalactivities. Until Belize comes up witha plan to deal with gang organi-zations, crimes will continueto increase because they willbe committed by organizedcriminals. Individual criminals are mucheasier to contain than areorganized criminals becausethey normally operate bythemselves and are afraid to getanybody else in their businessfor fear of being snitched uponby their accomplices andsharing the proceeds of their lootwith them. This reduces theamount of people who areengaged in a criminal activity. On the other hand, organizedcriminals have an organizationthat provide them with all thenecessary materials and suppliesneeded to commit crimes. Mostof the crimes they commit arewell planned and organized bythe members of their groups andeach member has a vital role toplay in the execution of thecrimes. This leads to theincrease in crimes and theamount of people who areengaged in the activity on a dailybasis causing it to be out ofcontrol. Most of their activities aredone in secrecy based on apledge and oath. The breachingof oaths normally have severepunishments which couldinclude death. Many people who

Recently, Attorney RodwellWilliams, the law partner of ourPrime Minister was gunneddown in a well planned assassi-nation attempt. This lawyer is afriend and business partner to themost powerful person in ourcountry. The investigation intothis crime must be thoroughbecause we are not sure as towhat type of message they couldbe sending to the people andgovernment of Belize. We alsodo not know who were the

are in these organizations wouldrather die for what they believein than to rat on their fellow gangmembers or organizations due tofear of personal retaliation orsevere consequences againstmembers of their families. Most of the murderscommitted in Belize City are theworks of gang members andthis fact is known by thegovernment of Belize and theBelize Police Department. Gang rivalry is on-going andperpetual and the hatred betweengang members breathe violencethat is never ending. When there is a culture of gangrivalry a person is going to bekilled almost everyday andsometimes for no justifiablereason. In many cities in the UnitedStates members of gangs arekilled over simple things colorsand disrespecting or badmouthing members gangs, symbols and what they stand for.Gangs in Belize came about inthe early 1980’s and mostpeople paid little or no attentionback then. Still in the Aragon/Jones reportthere was no mention of gangs. Is it that the government ofBelize is afraid of the gangs orthey just do not want to get themupset? An organization that isengaged in conducting illegal activities should always be agovernment’s top prioritybecause they pose a grave threatto the safety of law abidingcitizens and they can destabilizea government as was witnessedrecently in Jamaica. Our government cannot putthese issues on hold any longerand this is the appropriate timeto bring about legislations to dealwith gangs in Belize to stop thisinternal madness taking place inBelize.

peoplebehind planning thisfailed assassination. I just hope and pray that themotive of this crime was not po-litical because it willhave wider implications andconsequences. To make thisbold move demonstrates theirlack of respect for the people, laws and government of Belize. The new Minister of Policeand Public Safety is about to takeoffice and we wish him well intaking on this huge task.

The engineers who havedesigned the official football forthe 2010 World Cup have hitback at criticism of their ball bysome players. Fabio Capello said his playersgave the new ball bad reviews, with some players saying itmoves too quickly. Andgoalkeepers have claimed the

new Jabulani ball is difficult tohandle. But engineers at LoughbroughUniversity claim that their testsshow it is the most “consistent”football ever manufactured. The football that formerEngland international GeoffHurst belted into the goal in the1966 World Cup final was made

from 18 pieces of leather, stitched together and fastenedwith laces. We want a ball that is veryconsistent that allows the bestplayers to shine” says Dr. AndyHarland from LoughboroughUniversity. The new World Cup footballis made from just eight pieces ofshaped synthetic material gluedtightly together. The result - for the first timein football history, say themanufacturers - is anundistorted, perfectly sphericalball. The engineers who helpeddesign the ball, called theJabulani, say it should be themost consistent football evermade. Dr Andy Harland uses a robotto kick the ball. His set up is ableto reproduce corners, free kicks, passes and shots on goal - evenmore reliably than DavidBeckham. “Fundamentally, what we aretrying to achieve is a ball that isvery consistent that allows thevery best players in the world toexpress their skills,” he says.“So we’re not looking for a ballthat behaves unpredictablywhich would benefit a playerthat’s not skilful. We want a ballthat is very consistent that allowsthe best players to shine.”His robot tests, which were sup-ported by the ball’s manufacturerAdidas, showed that the Jabulaniwas better than previous WorldCup balls.
