Thank you for Your Advent Giving Tree Gifts

Your generous donations made Christmas wonderful for so many, many people in

need! The money was distributed to those who asked us to please help them re-

spond to the needs of those they serve at Christmas and into this New Year. We may

not see their faces, but God does and God knows our giving hearts! More than

$16,000 was donated through the Giving Tree in cash, gift cards, new story books,

socks, baby items, and food gifts. The letters of gratitude would make you so happy

as you read them, and there are so many.

May Jesus fill your life with what you most need during this new year! Let us pray

for a Happy, Hope-filled New Year for our recipients and for one another!

Kairos

This week more than 100 members of our very own Shrine Catholic High School will

be involved in a Kairos Retreat. This is a very special time for our students to grow

closer to Christ and become stronger in their faith. Please keep them in your prayers

throughout this entire week.

Rosie, Carlito & Lord Stanley

This warm January thaw has Lord Stanley thoroughly confused. Where is the

SNOW? He loved the snow and now it is gone. I think he is secretly praying for the

return of the snow in record proportions. If the snow does not come back, it can only

mean one thing to him, TIME TO GO SWIMMING!

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration

"O God, who without any merit on my part,

have made me Your child, grant that my life may

be worthy of this divine Sonship."

'Unless a man be born again of water and the

Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of

God. We can attain to God and His kingdom only through

Christ, through our incorporation in Him. This was effected in

us by 'water and the Holy Spirit', on the day of our holy

Baptism. ...Being born in Christ, we are to live in Christ and

walk in Christ, following the exhortation of the Apostle, 'Walk

ye in Him, rooted and built up in Him, and confirmed in the

faith"(Col 2: 6-7). Baptism gives us our birth in Christ; the other

sacraments are not only to restore, but also to root,

invigorate, and build up our life in Christ. ...Grant that I, who

have been baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and

the Holy Spirit, may always believe what I professed in the

Sacrament of regeneration. Let me adore You, my Father,

and Your Son with You; let me be worthy of the Holy Spirit who

proceeds from You and Your only-begotten Son."

Life Matters

In the wake of the tragedy at Newtown, we have all asked “why”

or “how can this be stopped from happening again”. The solutions

may be complex, but any answer must start with all of us taking

responsibility for the current state of our society. As Monsignor

preached his Christmas homily, he spoke about our role to put Christ

in the forefront of our lives and our culture. That includes aligning our

faith with our actions especially when protecting the most vulnerable

among us. As the Newtown tragedy reminds us, all life is precious

and that the taking of ANY life at any stage is intolerable. In a

society where the killing of the unborn through abortion and

embryonic stem cell research is legal and where the killing of our

vulnerable elderly is legal; how can we expect reverence for life at

other stages? On January 22, we will commemorate the 40th

anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. FORTY YEARS – a whole generation, 54

million children. If we truly want to take action to stop the violence

in our country, be courageous and take Jesus to the streets. Reach

out to those who feel such despair that they feel they have no other

options. The killing must stop. We can’t continue to do nothing

while children are killed; whether they are children in the womb or

children in a school room.

New Legion of Mary

Meeting Day

The National Shrine Legion of Mary group “Our Lady of Victories” has

a New Meeting Day at 7:00 pm in the Conference Center, Room B. First

meeting for the New Year will be January 15, 2013.

The Legion of Mary become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a

balanced program of prayer and service in a family atmosphere. Works

include door-to-door evangelization, parishioner visitation, visitation of

the sick or aged, Catholic education, visiting the newly baptized, visiting

families, and meeting the other spiritual needs of the parish community.

Legionaries are under the guidance of a spiritual director named by the

pastor. The Legion of Mary is, in essence, an extension of the heart and

hands of the pastor. Members meet weekly for prayer, planning and

discussion.

The Legion of Mary is open to all Catholics who:

• faithfully practice their religion;

• are animated by the desire to fulfill their role in the Catholic Church's

apostolate through membership of the Legion;

• are prepared to fulfill the duties which Active and Auxillary Membership

of the Legion involves.

Please attend the meeting for more information or call Scott @ 248.918.3765.

Rachel’s Vineyard

Approximately half of all women who get an abortion

have had one or more abortions in the past. Women with

a history of more than one abortion are likely to suffer

more severe physical and psychological problems from

their abortions. There is HOPE; we can help.

Hot off the presses-

Monica Migliorino

Miller's new book,

Abandoned: Th e

Untold Story of the Abortion Wars is now

available. It is very timely, in view of the

March for Life in Washington D C to mark

the Jan. 22nd anniversary of Roe V.Wade.

It is also appropriate because of the HHS

Mandate, which will require many

religious institutions, businesses and private

citizens covered by medical insurance to

help pay for free abortions, unless it can

be stopped. "Abandoned is a kind of

shocking immersion into the depths of the

American battle over abortion. Here is

preserved up-close and in detail an

important historical moment that reveals

at once the commitment, the fears, the

frustration and the hope of those who

oppose abortion and the darkest truth

about the practice of abortion itself. This

book is unprecedented, provocative and

will leave its mark on all who read

it." (Back Cover) Section 3, Pro-Life.

Kids have Gifts and Talents too!

It has now been one year since we started our Children’s

Offertory. The envelopes distributed at that time allows

children to fill in their TIME, TALENT and/or TREASURE they

would like to offer during Mass. The focus of this is not to

raise money for the parish but for the children to learn that

they too have valuable gifts of time and talent to share.

The envelopes are accepted at any of the Masses and

may be placed in the baskets that are passed around. Also,

during the Sunday 9:00 Mass, a basket is placed on the altar

Vocations

Sunday, January 13, 7:30 to 9 pm

Tonight we will take a close look at discerning our

vocations. Everyone has a vocation they are called to,

whether it be the priesthood, religious life, married life, or

single life. We will look at how others were faced with their

vocations and how they live that vocation out.

Lock-in at Our Lady of Sorrows

Saturday, January 19 through Sunday January 20

We will be joining other vicariate parishes for a night of

fellowship, faith and friends. Join us for an exciting and

faith filled weekend!

The format of this study will require home reading in order to be prepared to discuss the materials using the study guide

during the meetings.

When: Friday Mornings beginning February 8

Time: 9:30 – 11:30 am

Where: Conference Center – Seton Hall

Please join us as we study Pope Benedict’s first encyclical, God Is Love (Deus Caritas Est).

In God Is Love, promulgated on Christmas Day, 2005, Benedict XVI expounds on the reality of love. He knows that the

word “love” has been distorted and it’s meaning tarnished and this letter calls us back to the foundational truths about

love. This 10-week discussion and study group is part of the ENDOW (Educating on the Nature and Dignity of Women)

series. The course will be facilitated by Melissa Thompson. Cost for the class is $80, which includes all materials. Register

Make a Gift through an IRA Charitable Rollover

Normally, a distribution from your IRA is taxed as ordinary income. However, “fiscal cliff” tax legislation

just enacted extends the opportunity throughout 2013 for individuals 70½ or older to make a direct

distribution from your IRA to a qualified charity, such as the National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish, the

Catholic Services Appeal, the Archdiocese of Detroit Endowment Foundation, Sacred Heart Major

Seminary or another archdiocesan institution. Such qualified direct distributions to charity from your IRA

are not subject to income tax. The new law also provides that you may consider such distributions made

in January 2013 as made in 2012. In addition, the new law provides a special election available to

individuals who took a distribution from their IRA after November 30, 2012 and before January 1, 2013,

and who make a gift to a qualified charity before February 1, 2013, to treat the gift as an IRA charitable

rollover even though the distribution is not directly from the IRA to charity.

Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions

January 2013

General Intention:

The Faith of Christians. That

in this Year of Faith

Christians may deepen

their knowledge of the

mystery of Christ and

witness joyfully to the gift of

faith in him.

Missionary Intention:

Middle Eastern Christians. That the

Christian communities of the Middle East,

often discriminated against, may receive

from the Holy Spirit the strength of fidelity

and perseverance.

Office of Priestly Vocations

National Vocation Awareness Week National Vocation Awareness Week is a time for individuals,

families and parish communities to focus on the meaning of

vocation in their life. “Am I helping my family and my fellow

parishioners to be open to God’s call in their life; am I

responding to the vocation that God placed in me at my

Baptism?” are two questions everyone should reflect upon

during this special week.

Observance of National Vocation Awareness Week began in

1976 when the U.S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the

year for the celebration. In 1997, it was moved to coincide with

the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, this year marked on

January 13. Beginning in 2014, Vocation Awareness Week will be

moved to the first full week of November.

Father John Guthrie, associate director for the Secretariat of

Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations (CCLV) said that this

week should remind Catholics that it is their responsibility to pray

for vocations and to invite young people to consider a call to

ordained ministry and consecrated life. "When someone is

encouraged by three or more people to consider a religious

vocation in the Church, they are more than five times more likely

to seriously consider it, the CARA study showed. We need to be

less shy about encouraging someone with the right qualities for

religious life to think about it.”

Therefore, as part of that responsibility the faithful of the

Archdiocese should be aware that January 17-20, 2013 is the

next Men’s Discernment Weekend and February 23 is a Day of

Discernment with Archbishop Vigneron. Encourage someone to

attend whom you think who may be called to the priesthood.

Contact Fr. Tim Birney, Director of Priestly Vocations for more

information: 313-237-5875 or visit the website for resources,

lessons plans and more information at: www.detroitpriest.com

CSA Minute

Priestly Vocations

National Vocations Awareness Week begins this Sunday,

January 13, on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which marks

Jesus’ initiation into public ministry. Through Baptism, we all

receive a special vocational calling from God.

Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the

Archdiocesan Office of Priestly Vocations to help guide men

discerning a call to the diocesan priesthood through

discernment weekends at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. These

firsthand, up close and stress-free looks at seminary life are

offered for men of all ages. Next weekend’s, from January 17-20,

is for men ages 18 to 55, as is the March 21-24 discernment

weekend. A discernment overnight, for young men ages 14 to

17, will be held April 12-13.

For more information about discernment weekends, vocation-

related events or other CSA-funded programs, services, and

ministries, go to www.AOD.org.

NATIONAL SHRINE of the Little Flower Year of Faith

Unitatis

Redintegratio

(Decree on

Ecumenism) Catholic Principles

on Ecumenism, par 4

...Catholics must

gladly acknowledge

and esteem the truly Christian

endowments from our common heritage

which are to be found among our

separated brethren. It is right and salutary

to recognize the riches of Christ and

virtuous works in the lives of others who

are bearing witness to Christ, sometimes

even to the shedding of their blood. For

God is always wonderful in His works and

worthy of all praise.

Nor should we forget that anything

wrought by the grace of the Holy Spirit in

the hearts of our separated brethren can

be a help to our own edification.

Whatever is truly Christian is never contrary

to what genuinely belongs to the faith;

indeed, it can always bring a deeper

realization of the mystery of Christ and the

Church.

Question: Who have you known

personally or heard of in one of the

separated Christian communities who has

lived a life of heroic virtue?

Prayer: O welcome Guest of the soul,

establish our minds in truth and bring our

hearts to a ready obedience so that what

is determined in the Council may be

sincerely accepted and promptly fulfilled

by us.

We also pray to You for those sheep

who are not yet of the one true fold of

Jesus Christ. As they glory in the name of

Christian, so may they finally come to true

unity under the guidance of the one

Pastor.

By a kind of new Pentecost renew Your

marvelous works in this our time. Grant to

Holy Church that unanimously and

insistently persevering in prayer together

with Mary, the Mother of Jesus she may,

under the guidance of Saint Peter enlarge

the kingdom of the Divine Savior a

kingdom of truth and justice, of love and

peace. Amen.
