“We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.”
June 21, 2009 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Food In Church? Strictly speaking, nothing should be consumed in church except the Body and Blood of Christ. Water bottles, coffee
cups, pop cans are not allowed in church. Candy, gum, and snacks have no place in church.
I am reluctant to do so, but I am considering signs that say “NO FOOD OR BEVERAGES ALLOWED IN CHURCH.”
If you are going to receive Communion, you should abstain from all food for at least one hour before receiving. This hour of abstinence is meant to be a time of preparation to receive Jesus in the Eucharist.
There are members of our parish who have serious food allergies and medical conditions. Some cannot even be in proximity to dairy products; others cannot be near peanuts or foods containing them. Even to be in the proximity of
certain foods can cause serious and even life threatening results.
Children need to learn that church is not the place for snacks. Those little goldfish crackers or other treats may seem
to be an innocent and effective way to quiet a restless child, but they can have disastrous results for someone with severe allergies.
Out of concern for all members of the parish, do not bring food and drink into
the church. If an infant must nurse or have their bottle, please take them to the Martin Family Room where the Mass is live on TV. If you have to have food items for your child especially those containing dairy, wheat, or nuts, PLEASE, ONLY in the
Martin Family Room.
Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton
continued on page 3 ...
Following this simple guideline will show concern for those with medical conditions and will help to keep the church free of cheerios, fruit loops, gold fish, or whatever else gets left
behind and could be a threat to someone who comes later.
Catholic Services Appeal As of this past week, there were 941 cards returned. The pledges from these cards amounted to $146,720.73, which is 70% of our target for this year. Please return your card as soon as possible. We hope to go beyond our target.

Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions June 2009
General: That international attention towards the poor countries may give rise to more concrete help, in particular to relieve them of
the crushing burden of foreign debt.
Mission: That the particular Churches operating in regions marked by violence may be sustained by the love and concrete closeness of all the Catholics in the world.
Please pray for the repose of the soul of
Home Care Helpers for Homebound Parishioners Some of you know that I keep a list of parishioners that are willing or would like to provide home care for parishioners who are no longer independent. It is time to update my “short list” so I can pass on names and phone numbers to family
members who inquire. I also provide the names of agencies that can provide the same or more complete care of adults whose health has become frail.
If you are interested in being on my list that helps people make connections, please call and leave your name, phone number and your availability days and hours. Sister Noreen, 248.541.4122, ext. 411.
Downsizing? Have More Than You Need? Willing to Share? On Friday, July 3, the two couples who were baptized during the Easter Vigil and
are now National Shrine Parishioners, and will be moving into a two bedroom apartment in Oak Park. They are in need of furnishings to make a home together. If you can help, there are many needs: 2 full size or queen size beds, chests, lamps, side tables, kitchen table and 4 chairs, sofa, linens, etc. Also, we could use a few healthy guys and someone with a pickup truck. Can we help make a home once
more?
You, the National Shrine “saints-in process”, helped to put together a home for a mother and ten children at Christmas. You blessed them with such goodness! What can we do now?
If you can provide furnishings, or the manpower to help this move on Friday, July 3, please call me and leave your name, phone number and your message. I will try to
coordinate the offers as soon as I have a more complete list. If someone reading this would like to coordinate the offers, it would be a wonderful gift to me.
God bless you!
Retreat and Vacation During the last week in June I, will be at our motherhouse with more that 300 others Sisters of Charity, including Sister Alicia, for our annual Retreat. Please pray for us during that time and we will pray for you, too. During the first two weeks of July, I
plan to take some vacation time. If there is an urgent need, the receptionist may be able to contact me.

All money that comes in over out target is returned to the parish and will be applied to the bond payment for the Master Plan.
We are creeping up on our target each week. Please fill out your card and send
it in. Near the end of the month, we will consider a second mailing to those who have not yet responded.
Even if you are unable to support the CSA at this time, please return your card. This will help us to keep our records current. Annually returning your CSA Card with or without a donation is the only way we have of keeping your parish registration activated.
Holy Land Pilgrimage The Holy Land Pilgrimage from October 10 to 25 with Father Mąka, Father Patau, and yours truly, still has a few available openings. If you are seriously considering the possibility of making this pilgrimage, please contact me as soon as possible.
Low Gluten Host Low gluten content hosts are available at the tabernacle during the distribution of communion at all Masses.
Seminarians Rob Pahlkotter, a seminarian for the Diocese of Kalamazoo Michigan, and Dexter Noblefranca, a seminarian for the Diocese of Memphis Tennessee, are staying with us until August 15 while they do their Clinical Pastoral Education at Beaumont Hospital. Both men are officially Acolytes. It is one of the steps toward ordination to the priesthood. As Acolytes, they are charged with helping the priest and deacon in preparing the gifts for the altar and with the purification of the sacred vessels after
communion. You will probably see them carrying out these duties during their time with us.
Rosie & Carlito Mom comes home from Out West this weekend. Charlie is going to be so glad to see her. Not only is she MOM, but she is a pushover for treats and Charlie has been missing that. Rosie has tried to give him her treats but there are not many since she is on a diet as well.
Attention! Early Herald Due Date! Due to the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend, we
need to turn in our weekly bulletin to the printer early.

Mass Intentions Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
O Jesus, deign to take me into Your Sacred
Heart. Grant that it may be the sanctuary where I
may be recollected, sheltered, and find my rest.
The Heart of Jesus will be our surest refuge in
temptation; if we wish to escape Satan's wiles and
our own evil tendencies, we must take shelter in the Heart of
Him who conquered Satan, and healed our ills by His
wounds. Jesus triumphed over evil; if we take refuge in HIm,
we will have nothing to fear. Tempests may still rage around
us, but our soul will be guarded and protected from
shipwreck. No matter what kind of struggles we have to
undergo, no matter how bitter or humiliating they may be, if
we keep intact our confidence in this divine Heart, it will be
our salvation. - Divine Intimacy
Open hours: Thursday, 12 Noon and Friday, 2 am. Partners
are desired for the following days and times: Sundays, 2 and 6 pm; Wednesdays, 4 pm; Thursdays, 11 am; Fridays, 11 am and 4 pm, Saturdays, 9 pm; the 1 pm hour on Sunday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday; and the 7 pm hour Wednesday-Sunday. Please call Marie Lama at 248.655.0309 if you are interested in a Holy Hour. There are also sign-up cards
available on the chapel vestibule bulletin board.
Adorers, you may have noticed a young couple frequently in the chapel. Mr. and Mrs. George are devoting themselves to 8 hours of adoration - from 10 pm to 6 am DAILY for a month. They began on June 7. Their mission, I believe, is to help in the spread of perpetual Eucharistic adoration centers
around the world. I am edified by their devotion and love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Please make them feel welcome.
Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us!
A Mission: Possible Moment…
This Gospel passage is probably one of the most well–known, and eventually, most comforting, in the Gospels. As we read the passage, each of us, all baptized, committed
disciples and all those called to lay ecclesial ministry in the Church, recall times we have fears on our everyday journey. So, in the Gospel was the storm outside the boat or inside their spirits?
For those privileged to be in lay ecclesial ministry today, one of the most overwhelming gifts, one of the most awe–
inspiring experiences of standing on holy ground is to walk with people through the times of fear, worry, doubt, and turbulence, (as well as the good times) knowing that, experiencing that, no matter what, God remains with us.
For more information about lay ministry, visit our website at www.missionpossibledetroit.org.

Life Matters Over 50 million people have been killed by abortion in our country since Roe v. Wade. The loss of 50 million people is hard to imagine. Imagine this…
¨ It’s equivalent to the population of our 71 largest cities, from New York, NY, all the way down to cities the size of St. Petersburg, FL.
¨ It’s equal to or greater than the human loss we would experience from an all-out nuclear war.
¨ The Vietnam War Memorial Wall is ten feet high and 500 foot
long and contains 58,000+ names. Comparatively, a similar wall depicting all 50 million names would extend to over 81 miles in length.
¨ Over a million children per grade level throughout the nation would have been with us had they not been killed by abortion.
¨ It adds up to a 30% loss in the younger generation under age 36
-- nearly 1 out of 3 of this generation has been aborted.
¨ The Mississippi Baptist Convention collected 50 million pennies to represent each child killed; the coins are piled 6 feet deep in the 13-by-7 glass house. The structure weighs more than 300,000 pounds - or the equivalent of 100 sedans stacked on top of each other.

Lending Library Joseph Pearce has put together stories of some of the most famous literary figures of the
twentieth century who converted to the Catholic faith in a volume entitled, Literary Converts: Spiritual Inspiration In An Age of
Unbelief. G. K. Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc, Ronald Knox, Evelyn Waugh, Alex Guinness, Malcomb Muggeridge, Graham
Greene are only a few of the fascinating characters you will encounter in this book. The struggles they faced gives a lot of food for thought, and in the process of reading their stories, your own faith may be strengthened. [Section 7, Apologetics]

The Catholic Information Service
The Catholic Information is now offering mp3 audio files of lessons from the Luke E. Hart Series. The free series, funded by the Knights of Columbus and based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, answers the questions:
1. What does a Catholic believe?
2. How does a Catholic worship?
3. How does a Catholic live?
A total of 30 lessons, which run in the 30-40 minute range, are offered at http://www.kofc.org/un/eb/en/publications/cis/podcasts/hart/index.html (or go to www.kofc.org and follow the links). You can listen to them online or download them to your home computer. Burned onto a CD, they make great listening for quiet times at home or during a commute. A pdf version of each lesson is also available for those who prefer to read the material.
Archbishop Invites Faithful to Prayer in Economic Distress
The bankruptcy filing by General Motors adds to the disruption and uncertainty many in the Detroit area are feeling in regards to the economy and their own futures. Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron has said he is keeping all of those impacted by the latest developments in his prayers. He also invites the faithful to join him in imploring the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help, for her comfort in these times of economic distress.
Each Tuesday at 6 pm, devotionals to Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help are broadcast on Catholic Television Network of Detroit (CTND); Michigan Catholic Radio (WCAR, 1090 AM); and via podcast on the Web site of the Archdiocese of Detroit at www.aodonline.org. Prayer responses and recordings of the devotionals also can be found on the archdiocese Web site.

Knights of Columbus At our last council meeting on June 9, we elected our officers for the upcoming year. We thank those officers who are retiring. Their commitment and hard work is certainly greatly appreciated. We welcome our new officers, knowing that they have some large shoes to fill.
We are very confident they will accept the challenge and continue to lead our council in the years ahead.

This year we celebrate our ten year anniversary as a council. Plans are underway for an ample way to celebrate this occasion. We are always looking for new ideas on activities and events. These thoughts can be presented at any meeting of the council. We gather together on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at the National Shrine Conference Center. Start time is 7:30 pm. All members in good standing are welcome to
attend.
On Friday June 26, we will have our annual picnic on the facility grounds of Mary's Children Home for challenged children and adults. All members and their families are welcome to stop by and visit with our kids. We do have one request. Please let us know that you are coming so that we can plan the food. Our Columbian Squires Group will be hosting. Our contact is SK Joseph Chase, Squires Director. Start time is 11:30
am.
During part of the upcoming holiday weekend, our family will be attending the Summer K of C meetings in Gaylord, MI. I was recently reappointed for a second term as the K of C Archdiocese Director. Our family wishes to thank those who helped and supported us during our first year. It went by too fast. Bishop Patrick Cooney will be saying the Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral in Gaylord. All new State and Diocesan Officers will receive his blessings as we are sworn in for another term. Our new fraternal year starts on July 1. We look
forward to the new challenges this fraternal year will bring.
We are always looking for new members to join the Knights of Columbus family. We are active in all fifty states, several U.S. territories and several foreign countries. In Michigan, we have over 72,000 members in the world's largest Catholic, family, fraternal organization. If you are interested in learning more about us, please do not hesitate to let us know. We can be contacted by telephone, email, or just leave a note at the rectory.
Vivat Jesus ! Frank Roche, Archdiocese Director- K of C

Archbishop Vigneron to Receive Pallium from Pope On Monday, June 29, Detroit Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron will receive from Pope Benedict XVI a symbolic cloth, called a pallium (pal–ee–um), signifying his
leadership role in the church. The pallium, a thin, white scarf made of lamb’s wool, is presented at the Vatican to the resident bishop of an archdiocese. It is worn outside the chasuble and around the shoulders; it resembles the letter ‘Y’ and signifies an archbishop’s unique role in his regional grouping of dioceses known
as a province. (The seven dioceses of Michigan compromise the Province of Detroit.)
Archbishop Vigneron will be among other archbishops from the United States receiving this honor at the Basilica of St. Peter at the Vatican on the feast
day of SS. Peter & Paul. For coverage of the event, or to learn more about the pallium or the ceremony, visit www.aodonline.org/pallium.
Help Youth in Detention, Become a LIFECoach LIFECoach Mentoring is a means to minister to the spiritual as well as the educational needs of youth in detention. It assists youth by empowering
them to visualize a future beyond detention when they re–enter into society. LIFECoach is a group mentoring process, where the mentors and youth gather together in a large classroom setting for a 12–week segment, with a one–to–one mentor–to–youth ratio and a facilitator initiating the session
discussion.
The Archdiocese of Detroit Office for Youth Ministry, in its ministry to youth–at–risk in detention facilities, is seeking individuals who are 19 years of age and older; understanding, non–judgmental
and able to adapt to diverse populations; willing to go through background checks; and willing to commit to the mentoring program for a 12–week segment, or on Saturdays either monthly or quarterly in the ongoing Spiritual Enrichment Ministry.
A one–day training session is required either on Friday, August 21, or Saturday, August 22, from 9 am until 12 Noon at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. For information contact Ida Johns, MA, LLPC Coordinator, Ministry to Youth in Detention, by calling 313.237.6056, or email

A Family Perspective
The apostles in today’s Gospel were amazed at
the power of Jesus. C h i l d r e n a r e
amazed at our lack of fear of dark rooms or monsters in closets or under beds. As the apostles depended on Jesus, children depend on us to restore quiet to their lives.
Getting out of bed in the middle of the night to quiet a child’s fears is the stuff of holiness.
- by Bud Ozar
FLOWER: Families Live Out the Word in Everyday Routines Jesus was in the stern asleep on a
cushion. They woke him and said to him,
“Teacher, do you not care that we are
perishing?”…the wind ceased and there
was great calm…
We know that God is always with us, he promises to never leave us alone. And yet many times in life we feel that we are alone, that God has abandoned us, that
he is nowhere to be found or that he is asleep on a cushion somewhere not noticing the storms around us. It is in those times that we, like the disciples, need to remember to turn to him, to ‘wake him
up’ if you will, to share with him our concern and turn it over to him. Once we turn it over to God then the ‘wind can cease, and we are embraced by great calm.’ How might we remind ourselves to ‘look over’ to Jesus and give him our
concerns?
