Election of New PopeMasses of the Holy Spirit for the election of a new pope

I truly believe our prayer to the Holy Spirit is not toinfluence His decision, but rather to open our minds andhearts to His wisdom and will. We pray that the electingcardinals, the one who is their elected choice and all of usmay be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and acceptingof His holy will. We are ultimately the ones who will benefit.

children prepared for the reception of their First Eucharist willtake place. There will be three groups. their families, and the entire parish community.
The Permits are Here!It has taken what seems like an eternity, but the building
permits have been issued for the social hall and meeting spacein the retail center. Work has begun in earnest to completethis work sometime in late May. This will allow us to beginthe demolition work and site improvements at the church inpreparation for the addition. This is the first of several
construction developments that will be occurring this summer, throughout the fall and beyond.
As soon as Seton Hall is vacated, demolition work isscheduled. This will require a location for the AdorationChapel. A cosmetic upgrade to the Coughlin Building willallow the adoration chapel to be located permanently in thatlocation. The work over the summer and fall will be in threeparts at the church; the first is demolition of Seton Hall andthe site immediately surrounding it; the second is creation ofthe new parking lot and a brick fence between the neighborsand our site; the third is barrier free access and ramps nearthe east door. All of these are in anticipation of the newconnector which we expect to begin construction onsometime early next year. These changes will be a substantialimprovement for our parishioners and pave the way forcontinuing the vision.
Rosie, Carlito, and ZoskaRosie has been enjoying long walks with different
residents of the rectory. She has to lose about 10 pounds tofit under the limit for her summer preventative medications. No matter how longingly she looks at you, please do not givein and give her treats. It is for her own good.
First Communion MassesPlease note the First Communion Masses will be held on
Saturday, April 23 at 4:30 pm, Sunday, April 24 at 12:30 pmand Sunday, May 1 at 10:45 am. These Masses are usuallyvery well attended and pews fill early. Please keep the 160students who will be receiving their First Communion at Shrinethis year in your prayers!
Tom Kirkwood retires after 43 yearsHow do you say thank you to someone who has given
so much- literally a lifetime’s work- to so many? When Tom Kirkwood first came to Shrine as an English
and Religion teacher in 1962, John F. Kennedy was president,Elvis was on the radio, and nuns and priests comprised mostof the teaching faculty. As the decades passed, he was awitness to world history, wide-ranging curricular changes, andnumerous fashion trends. Through it all he served his parishand community as a voice that spoke loudly for academicexcellence, good sportsmanship, and the importance ofChristian values in an increasingly secular world.
As Tom points out in his farewell column of the alumninewsletter Shrine Today, when he took the helm as principal

of Shrine High School in 1970, there were 52 parish highschools operating in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Today thereare only five remaining and Shrine Catholic is among the verystrongest in the pack. This fact alone speaks volumes aboutTom’s dedication to excellence, commitment to financialrestraint and the ability to create an academic environmenttruly unique in the metro Detroit area. Tom would be the firstto admit that he could have achieved none of this withoutthe generous support of Shrine parishioners over the yearsand makes a special point to thank them for their significantcontributions in his column.
As Tom retires, he leaves behind a school that sends 100%of its graduates on to college and a senior class that boastsfour National Merit Finalists among its ranks. Even moreimportantly, he leaves with the knowledge that he has sentgenerations of intelligent, talented, and truly service orientedstudents into the world community for 43 years. A legacy likethat is surely one to be proud of.
For parishioners, alumni, friends and all families interestedin extending a personal thank you to Tom for his long yearsof dedicated service, there will be a reception in his honorheld on Sunday, June 26, 2005Sunday, June 26, 2005Sunday, June 26, 2005Sunday, June 26, 2005Sunday, June 26, 2005 at the 13 mile campus from1-4 pm1-4 pm1-4 pm1-4 pm1-4 pm.

High SchoolMath Students Celebrate Pi Day
No that’s not a typo. It is pi as in Ð or 3.14159or the ratio of the circumference of a circle to itsdiameter. Many math students around thecountry celebrate the day in many variouscreative ways. Last month our math studentscelebrated the day, which also happens to beAlbert Einstein’s birthday, by enjoying pie servedby our wonderful faculty in the MathDepartment. Another creative way to learn math!
Hitting the IceYou may have heard rumblings of a Shrine
Knight Hockey team taking shape for next year. Many of our hockey parents are working very hardwith the administration to make this happen. Adecision still has not been made as to whetherthis will be a Varsity team or a club team, but eitherway, some of our Shrine Catholic students arebeginning to prepare now. They have joined withstudents from other schools to have a High SchoolJV - McDonald Conference team this spring.
The current schedule calls for ten games, thefirst of which was played last weekend. TheKnights were victorious over the West Bloomfieldteam, 5-4. Current Shrine Academy eighth grader,Ian Burgess commented, “The game was reallyintense; you had to keep your head. But it wasalso very fun to play with other Shrine kids andwe have some great coaches. We won becausewe played as a team.”

Growing in Faith as a Family . . . Elementary...Fourth Sunday of Easter: “I am the gatekeeper.”Acts 2:14a-36-41, 1Peter 2:20b-25, & John 10:1-10
This week’s Gospel poses an interesting dilemma for us. Raised in a societywhere the easy way out is often desired, we go to great lengths to make ourlife easier. Modern appliances, the Internet, electronic banking, medical andtechnological advances pave the way for such a world. We can take a pill toreduce stress rather than change our life-style; we can get instant credit, andbuy our way out of responsibility by having someone else do it for us. That isthe brass ring; the epitome of success. John’s Gospel dismantles that philosophyin one fell swoop.
“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter the sheepfold throughthe gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. But whoever entersthrough the gate is the shepherd of the sheep,” Jesus tells us. Not only is thereonly one way through the “gate,” but Jesus also says, “Amen, amen, I say toyou, I am the gate for the sheep.” Since we are not shepherds or sheep, what isJesus’ point?
Back in Jesus’ times, just as today, there were many distractions to leadinga holy life. The Lord is very clear in this Sunday’s Gospel. The only way we aregoing to be saved is to go through the gate. That gate is Jesus Christ. He is thedoorway to salvation. There are no shortcuts. We can’t put Him on the back-burner until we’re done having fun and then get serious about our faith as weapproach the sunset of our lives. We can’t ‘climb over’ the wall; we must walkthrough the gate.
This is a difficult reading for us. The younger we are, the less we want tothink about our own death; dying is for old people. We have lives to live, kids toraise, bills to pay, and jobs to do. John’s Gospel isn’t only about our eternalreward for a life well lived, but also for our life on earth. What we don’t oftenrealize is, if we follow Jesus we will be free of many of the demands of thisworld that weigh us down. God loves us unconditionally and if we live for Him,does God care if we have a boat, a new car, the biggest house on the block, orthe most expensive jewelry? No. God cares if we love our children, raise themin the faith, and treat those who are in our life as if they were precious gifts. How about that for simplifying things? Does God care if our kids are in premieresports? Does He care if their lives are filled with activities such as dance andmusic lessons, so they never lack for something exciting to do? No. God wantsyour family to come and visit Him at His house on the weekends. Worship andteach your children to do the same. Spend some time with Him, freeing upyour mind and letting go of all the tension that comes with being a super-parent, super-employee, or even, super-kid.
Following Jesus is about letting go. There is no other way to Heaven butthrough Jesus. The Good Shepherd is waiting at the gate, calling His flock. We can choose to roam around the pasture and risk getting lost or we canfollow the Shepherd and know the freedom and safety of His loving arms. Jesussays, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I came so that you might have life and live itmore abundantly” (John 10:10). That’s what Easter is all about—dying to ourold ways and rising to new life in Him who saves us all!
A Teaching Moment…Good Shepherd SundayRegardless of which Liturgical Cycle we are in (A, B, or C), the readings on the fourth Sunday after Easter focus on Jesus the
Good Shepherd. In early Greek Christian art, Jesus was often portrayed as a young, athletic shepherd with a lamb on His shoulders. The Greeks looked to Jesus as a Savior who would re-unite the nations, which fell apart following the death of Alexander the Greatcenturies before. Jesus is our Good Shepherd and we are His sheep. Jesus loves and tends to our needs. As a family, talk about howeach of you follows Jesus. To remind children we are the lambs of Jesus’ flock, use chalk and have them trace their hands on apiece of black paper. Cut the tracing out, placing the hands upside down so the four fingers are the legs of the lamb and the thumbis the head. Have the children glue cotton balls on the palm for the lamb’s body. Draw on or glue googlie-eyes on the head. Hangthe lambs in your child’s room to remind them of the importance of following Jesus everyday. Let the lambs remind us, as parentsand caregivers, to take time to de-stress and enjoy the little lambs God entrusted to us.
