“We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.”
October 20, 2013 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
17 Years
This past week on the 15th of October, the
Feast of Saint Teresa of Avila, I celebrated Holy
Mass with our band of pilgrims in the crypt of
the Basilica of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus
and the Holy Face (our own Little Flower) in
Lisieux, France. I could not help but recall that
17 years ago on this date in 1996 I took up
residence at Shrine and became pastor.
Following Archbishop Brunett who was your
pastor for 3 years, and Archbishop Nienstedt
your pastor for 2 years, I told you I would be
around for a long time. I think I have fulfilled
those words.
We have been through a lot together;
Baptisms, Weddings, Confirmations, First
Communions, Funerals, Easter Vigils with
hundreds of new Catholics baptized or
received into the Church. Over the past 17
years we have had a number of capital
campaigns, become a National Shrine,
received the relics of Saint Thérèse with a
record number of faithful attending, created a
new baptismal font in a restored Saint Thérèse
Chapel, established a Master Plan which still
guides our development, constructed Heritage
Hall with a new reception area, moved the
Adoration Chapel to its new more fitting home
in the Coughlin building, purchased the strip
mall and established the conference center,
added parking and enhanced the grounds.
Now we are on our way to being designated a
minor basilica.
Our schools continue to be strong while
many around us have perished. New windows
were installed, many classrooms updated,
science labs totally redone, the high school
chapel doubled in size, created the Sanders
Performing Arts Center and built the new field
house along with many other enhancements.
Bearings
Notes from Monsignor Easton
There is still a long way to go. We desperately need a
larger parish hall with multiple uses, the preschool building
needs to be replaced, the sports fields need major
improvements. The list is endless. Before anything else we
need to pay forward on our debt for the field house to
reduce our interest and put us in a position to move
forward. As I wrote a few weeks ago we are in good
financial shape, healthy not wealthy.
As I review the past 17 years, I am filled with deep
appreciation for the support and the patience of the
people of Shrine. I beg forgiveness of those I have
offended or hurt in any way. I have never intended to
purposefully hurt anyone. Please forgive my human

Christian Service Commission
Commission Members serve in leadership roles in various activities to help us live
our Catholic Social Values. We will meet on Thursday, October 24, 2013 in the
Heritage Hall Board Room at 7:00 pm. Services in which we spend many human
and financial resources are: Life Issues, Services for the Homeless, Jail Ministry,
Advent Giving Tree, St. Vincent de Paul assistance, Disabilities Concerns, Health
Advocacy, Justice Concerns, Legislative Advocacy, AED Responders and Pastoral
Care.
Anyone who is interested in helping with the leadership in a particular area is
welcome and encouraged to come to this meeting. Thanks to all who currently
serve.
Today is Mission Sunday
We observe the annual day of prayer and sacrifice for the missions today. We
unite ourselves with our fellow Christians all over the world who with us attempt to
share our faith with others, especially those who have not yet heard of the name of
Jesus.
We listened today to the Gospel account of the widowed woman who just
never gives up in her petition for help. Her persistence pays off and her wish is
granted. Sometimes we might feel like the judge who just got tired of her constant
request for assistance. Our missionaries, who keep coming to us for help may
remind us of the persistence widow. At God’s command they have left home and
family and bring the Gospel message on God’s loving care to those living in the
over 1,500 missionary diocese of the world.
Today offers us the opportunity to assist them as did Aaron and Hur for Moses
who sought so hard for the betterment of his people. Our Holy Father, Pope
Francis, has not stopped reminding us that this support of the missions is still an
essential part of the Church.
World Mission Sunday, this year, offers us the opportunity to join with our Holy
Father in this zealous care for the world’s poor.

weaknesses and continue to be patient with me as we move forward. As Saint
Thérèse encourages us, may we continue to love and serve The Lord Our God
with all our strength in both big and little ways.
Louis and Zelie Martin
The relics of the parents, Louis and Zelie Martin are enshrined in the crypt of the
Basilica of Saint Thérèse in Lisieux. Their pictures hang in the Martin Room (aka the
cry room) of our own National Shrine. They are the first married couple to be
beatified together. They will also hopefully be the first married couple canonized
together. There are other married couples who are both saints, but none of them
were ever canonized together. We have three people connected to our parish in
the process of canonization, Solanus Casey, and Blessed Louis and Zelie Martin.
Pray for their canonization and seek their intercession.
Rosie, Carlito & Lord Stanley
As I write this in France, I look forward to seeing my three friends again. I have
been tempted to ask one of the pilgrims to hang on to the other end of a leash as
we walk. I think it would make me more comfortable walking with a leash in
hand.
Widowed in Recent Years?
Women whose spouse has died in the past few years are invited for
“Coffee and Conversation” with a focus on your needs, interests and ways
of coping now that your spouse is gone. We will share ideas on what may
be helpful for this part of your life-jouney. We will meet on Thursday, October
24, from 10 to 11:30 am in Heritage Hall Room B. Park in the 12 Mile parking
lot and go to the receptionist for directions to Room B. If you will be new to
the group, please call Sr. Noreen (248.541.4122, ext. 411) and leave your
name and phone number so we can plan accordingly.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
"In spite of the difficulties, Thérèse remained faithful to
prayer and relished her time with the Lord. She was there to
love and comfort Him, demanding no comfort in return. The
fact that she received none is meant to encourage rather
than discourage us."
- Prayers and Meditations of Thérèse of Lisieux
edited by Cindy Cavnar
"The power of prayer is really tremendous. It makes one
like a queen who can approach the king at any time and get
whatever she asks for. To be sure of an answer, there is no
need to recite from a book a formula composed for the
occasion. If there were, I should have to be pitied. ...I
behave like children who cannot read: I tell God very simply
what I want and He always understands....For me, prayer is
like an upward leap of the heart, an untroubled glance
towards heaven, a cry of gratitude and love which I utter
from the depths of sorrow as well as from the heights of joy. It
has a supernatural grandeur which expands the soul and
unites it with God."
- St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Life Matters
It is very easy to look at the craziness and violence in our culture
and wonder what one person can do to make a difference. But
Jesus is calling each of us to be His arms, His legs, His eyes, His heart
and His voice. Not only does He want us individually to know His
mercy and love but He wants us to bring that gospel to the world.
What better way to do that than to be a witness to the women
coming to Womancare for an abortion, witness to the abortion
workers that there is a better way to serve and witness to the
hundreds of people who pass by in their cars on Southfield Road.
People can make a difference if they put their trust in God.
Please also consider joining the prayer vigil outside of WomanCare
throughout the 40 Days for Life campaign running until November 3.

Pope Francis has
come upon the world
stage with a big splash
following the words,
"Habemus Papam"! ! The secular press is
pulling out statements, sometimes out of
context, to present their picture of him. If
you want to know more about who he
really is, two newly published books will
help to "fill in the blanks". Francis, Pope of
a New World, is a biography by Andrea
Tornielli who is a Vatican reporter, that tells
about his background, his qualities, what
led up to his election, and more. Pray For
Me: The Life and Spiritual Vision of Pope
Francis, First Pope From the Americas by
Robert Moynihan, the editor of Inside the
Vatican magazine is divided into three
parts: "A New Pope's First Days:", "The Life
That Formed Pope Francis"; and "In His

his writings).

being Confirmed in October:
1. At this point your Servant Ministry should be
completed. If it is not, contact Mrs. Gray
immediately ([email protected] or

Please keep these young men and women in your
prayers in a very special way over the next several weeks.
Thank you and may God bless you.

Angels’ Place Resident Homes
Are you looking for a way to fit service hours into your
busy Fall/Winter schedule? Choose a convenient time for
your family and help Angels’ Place in a meaningful way.
Angels’ Place has several resident homes very close by
the Shrine community for adults with developmental
disabilities. Many of these homes need assistance with
seasonal clean up. This project could qualify as a Long
Term Ministry if volunteers are interested in working
regularly over the Fall/Winter (talk to Mrs. Gray to set this
up). Confirmation candidates and at least one parent
can sign up by contacting Dawn Bradley at
[email protected] or at 248.350.2203.

Saturday, November 9, 9 am
Renaissance Vineyard Church, 1841 Pinecrest,
Ferndale
Parents and youth are needed to unload the truck for
the Focus: HOPE food distribution site. After the truck is
unloaded, parent/student teams have the option to
deliver food to a few homes. Students who have
delivered food in the past have found this to be very
meaningful. PLEASE NOTE the NEW LOCATION of this
event. To register, please contact Mrs. Gray at
248.541.5133 or [email protected] with the words
"Focus Hope" in the subject line.

Grade School Happenings
Computer Classes
We’ve had a great start to the year in computer
classes. The kindergarten students have jumped right
in and are using the computers like pros. The returning
students are building on the skills used in previous
grades. Our work in the Computer Lab focuses on
using the computer as a tool. We use a number of
applications to create diverse projects and
presentations. The students in each grade build on
the skills and knowledge from the previous years. Our
application software includes Kid Pix, Inspirations,
Word, Power Point, Prezi, and Micro Worlds EX. The
students are producing interesting and innovative
presentations that support the curriculum. In the
process they are learning how to use the computer to
research, read and synthesize the information
gathered, and convey that information to their
audience with their projects and presentations. The
bar is set high and they are enjoying the challenge.
The other big news for technology at the Grade
School is the addition of iPads! With funds earned
from the auction, we were able to purchase an Apple
iPad Learning Lab. We have a set of 25 iPads and a
secure Bretford PowerSync Cart. The cart can store,
charge, and sync all of the iPads with the MacBook Air
computer. The cart moves easily around the school so
multiple classes can use them, and the cart can be
locked to secure the devices when they’re not in use.
There will be apps for all of the grade levels and
subject areas. Our S.T.E.M. Club will be among the first
to test the rollout of the new iPads. Thanks to the
Auction Committee and everyone who supported the
auction for such an important purchase.

Altar Server News
Soon another group of students will join the altar server ranks, including several who are beginning
their two-year preparation for Confirmation. Thank you for the commitment of students, parents,
teachers, and our priests to the altar server ministry.
Students in fifth grade and older (from any school or home-schooled, and parish members) can get
on the list for the next altar server training sessions (February-March 2014) by emailing Ellen Kehoe at
[email protected] or calling 248.547.1404.
During the past two weeks, the adult men servers have filled in at the morning Masses while Shrine
Grade School students concentrated on Iowa testing. Thank you for helping us again this year!
Vocations
What are you doing in the family, the parish, the
vicariate and the region to promote and encourage
vocations to the priesthood? Prayer and invitation are
two powerful ways you can make a difference.
Invite someone you know to attend a Discernment
Weekend for men aged 18-55: Thursday – Sunday,
October 31- November 3, 2013. For more information
visit our website: www.detroitpriest.com. Follow us on
Facebook: Office of Priestly Vocations or Twitter
@DetroitPriest.
DID YOU KNOW: According to a CARA report, the
Archdiocese of Detroit is now one of many dioceses
throughout the United States who now has fewer active
diocesan priests than parishes served. Present data
indicates that the average age for priests assigned to
the Archdiocese of Detroit is 56.6 years of age. In the
240 parishes, we have 262 AOD assigned priests 37 of
which are religious order priests. From 2013 to 2023 it is
projected that there will only be 188 total active priests
available for parish assignments; a 28.2% DECREASE in
the number of priest in ten years.
Vocations, one of the seven mission priorities for the
Archdiocese of Detroit!

Music Ministry
The Archdiocese of Detroit will present Music
Ministry Enrichment Day 2013 next Saturday,
October 26, at St. John Vianney Parish in Shelby
Twp.
“Sacrosanctum Concilium at 50: Past, Present,
and Future” will include fellowship, table discussions
and two breakout sessions. One, focusing on the
theme of the day, will be a panel discussion. The
second, “The Historical and Spiritual Journey of a
Psalm,” will feature both a performance and a
discussion.
The free event is possible because gifts to the
Catholic Services Appeal support the work of the
Christian Worship Office, which coordinates and
certifies pastoral musicians in the Archdiocese of
Detroit.

D. T. P. S.
In the Gospel today we hear Jesus tell us how important it is to pray without getting tired of it, without
growing weary of talking to him. We should know by know that Mass is the perfect way to pray and thank
God, but yet how often have we woke up on a Sunday morning and said to ourselves that we were feeling
just too tired to go to Mass, or it was such a busy week that we need some extra rest, or that the day is so
packed full of things to do that we can’t give an hour to God. And if we have ever said or thought those
things, is it any wonder that in the last line from the Gospel, we can almost hear the sadness in Jesus’ voice
when he asks if he will find faith on the earth when he returns at his second coming.
Yes the devil wants to convince us that prayer is not important, but he does it in a very conniving way.
Gradually eating away at our daily prayer time, convincing us that shaving 5 or 10 minutes off here or there
won’t matter is the way Satan convinces us to stop praying. Jesus told us it was important, but knew of our
human weakness and it is only with his help, help we get from the Eucharist, that we can win the battle and
not grow weary. 10 minutes in the morning, 5 in the middle of the day, and 10 more at night, is a simple gift to
give to God. Add up how much time you spent watching TV, or listening to music or browsing aimlessly on the
internet. Was it more than 25 minutes? Likely so. Jesus gives us himself freely, today (and every day) we can
commit to give ourselves to him.
In Christ, Deacon Tom

NATIONAL SHRINE of the Little Flower
Year of Faith
The word “liturgy”
originally meant a “public
work” or a “service in the
name of/on behalf of the
people.” In Christian
tradition it means the
participation of the People of God in
“the work of God.” Through the liturgy
Christ, our redeemer and high priest,
continues the work of our redemption in,
with, and through his Church.
In the New Testament the word
“liturgy” refers not only to the celebration
of divine worship but also to the
proclamation of the Gospel and to
active charity. In all of these situations it is
a question of service to God and
neighbor.
-Catechism of the Catholic Church
#1069 -1070
Question
How does the celebration of Mass
motivate me to do the “work of God” in
my everyday life?
Prayer
Direct, we beg you, O Lord, our actions
by your holy inspirations, and grant that
we may carry them out with your
gracious assistance, that every prayer
and work of ours may begin always with
you, and through you be happily ended.
Amen.
