“We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.”
November 18, 2012 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Parish Contribution
Over the past two weeks, the Finance Council of
the National Shrine of the Little Flower and I have
attempted to contact all registered parishioners
through a personal letter asking for your increased
support for the parish. As we plan for the future,
such an increase is necessary if we are to continue
the services and programs that we offer. The
support of the National Shrine parish members is
very generous and truly appreciated. However,
every couple of years increased costs and inflation
catch up with us. The last time we formally asked all
parish members to adjust their support level was 14
years ago.
Please reflect carefully on your level of support
and whether it is possible to offer a bit more to your
parish at this time. Please pray for the success of this
endeavor, especially that those of our parish who
do not regularly contribute will begin to accept their
share of the responsibility for enabling the National
Shrine to continue in its mission of worship,
education and service.
I know that there are many of our parishioners
who care deeply about our parish and who will
support it to the best of their ability. We thank you
for this and look forward to your response to our
Appeal at this time. A generous response will help
us to plan for the next couple of years with security
and confidence.
Please review the material you receive and use
the commitment envelope mailed to you. You may
also wish to consider using Faith Direct, the direct
deposit program for regular Sunday offering and
special collections. I use this method personally and
find it very convenient.

Advent Giving Projects
It’s time to get ready for the Advent Season when we prepare our
hearts and homes to welcome Jesus in the many ways He presents
Himself to us. One of those ways is to serve those in great need.
The first part of our Giving tree collection is to ask you to purchase a NEW BOOK
for a child, ages 2 through 18. These will become part of a gift package prepared
by the Ladies of Charity, Catholic women who serve those in great need. Some of
the 900 families are served through the Jail Ministry, Catholic Social Services and the
Pontiac area parishes. We will collect NEW, unwrapped story books in a box in
Heritage Hall until Sunday, December 2. We will also have a collection box near the
Giving Tree in church and in Heritage Hall. The books will be collected after the
Masses and secured.
1000 pairs of new tube Socks for the Jail Ministry are needed by December 9.
Collection bins are in the vestibules, or socks may be dropped off at the office
during the week. Thanks very much!
Our Giving Tree invites you to make a generous cash or check donation to help
many of our core city Catholic ministries for children, the homeless, and the elderly
in need. Families who eat at the Soup Kitchens receive help, too.
New Gift Cards are also appreciated by many of those projects that request our
help. Checks may be written to Shrine Giving Tree and dropped in the collection or
at the parish office. Truly it is more blessed to give than to receive. Every sacrifice
you make will be given with prayer and love to those in need of the hope and
peace of Christmas.

Roy also encourages any nurses, or nurse assistants who would like to volunteer to
help on a particular day, to contact him at 248.885.4881. The Welcome Inn will be

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Day Mass is at 9:00 am on Thursday, November 22. Attending Mass is
certainly a great way to begin the day with the perfect act of thanksgiving to God, the
Holy Eucharist.
Sacraments of Initiation
The sacraments are divided into: the Sacraments of Christian Initiation (Baptism,
Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist); The sacraments of healing (Penance and
Anointing of the Sick); and the sacraments at the service of communion and mission
(Holy Orders and Matrimony). The sacraments touch all the important moments of
Christian life. All of the sacraments are ordered to the Holy Eucharist as their end.
Over the last two weeks we have dealt with the teaching of the Church in the
Catechism of the Catholic Church regarding the sacraments of Baptism and
Confirmation. Because the Eucharist is central and the end of all the sacraments we will
spend a few weeks reviewing the teaching of the Church regarding the Holy Eucharist.
The numbers refer to the paragraphs in the Compendium of the Catechism of the
Catholic Church. The numbers in parenthesis refer to the paragraphs in the Catechism
itself.
271. What is the Eucharist?
The Eucharist is the very sacrifice of the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus which he
instituted to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until his return in
glory. Thus he entrusted to his Church this memorial of his death and Resurrection. It is a
sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet, in which Christ is consumed, the mind
is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given. (1322-1323, 1409)
272. When did Jesus Christ institute the Eucharist?
Jesus instituted the Eucharist on Holy Thursday “the night when he was betrayed” (1
Corinthians 11:23), as he celebrated the Last Supper with his apostles. (1323, 1337-1340)
274. What does the Eucharist represent in the life of the Church?
It is the source and summit of all Christian life. In the Eucharist, the sanctifying action of
God in our regard and our worship of him reach their high point. It contains the whole
spiritual good of the Church, Christ himself, our Pasch. Communion with divine life and
the unity of the People of God are both expressed and effected by the Eucharist.
Through the Eucharistic celebration we are united already with the liturgy of heaven and
we have a foretaste of eternal life.
Rosie, Carlito & Lord Stanley
This past week Rosie went to the pet beauty parlor. Wow, she looks like a new dog.
Lord Stanley got a bath with shampoo and conditioner. He looks pretty good too. Both
of them are enjoying the cooler weather. Lord Stanley (Stachu) is looking forward to his
first experience with SNOW!

Evangelization: The Laity Are Called to
Evangelize in Everyday Life
The task of evangelization is not to be left up to the
bishops, priests, and religious, but is a call to every Catholic. It
is especially a call to the laity, who are the leaven in society.
"Each individual Catholic is to look at his or her everyday life
from the viewpoint of evangelization. Take note of the many
opportunities to support another's faith, to share faith, and to
help build up Jesus' kingdom in our homes and workplaces,
among our neighbors and friends. Catholics should
participate in renewal programs and receive training in
evangelization." (Go and Make Disciples, 136)
Stewardship Thoughts
The Scripture passages from Daniel and St. Mark’s Gospel
speak of the end of time second coming of Christ. At that
time, we know we will have to give an accounting of our
stewardship of God’s blessings to us. For those who have em-
braced Christian stewardship as a way of life and as a witness
of discipleship in Christ to build God’s Kingdom on earth, it will
be a time of great joy and celebration of life eternal with
God. If the end occurred today, would our stewardship allow
us to be counted among God’s elect?

Life Matters
Thanksgiving is a time to thank God for our many blessings – our
family, friends, our faith and our freedoms. This Thanksgiving, the
campaign team for 40 Days for Life Southfield is thanking God for all the
volunteers who participated in this fall’s campaign. Without your
continued support, numerous lives would be untouched by your witness
of love and hope and countless women would not know there are
alternatives to abortion. Shrine covered 3 days of prayer, our Knights of
Columbus filled two hours every night for 40 days, Fr. Lang and Sr.
Noreen came and lead us in prayer and numerous Shrine parishioners
signed up for individual prayer hours beyond the three Shrine Days. You
participated in the largest and longest pro-life mobilization in history.
There were 40 Days of prayer and fasting in 316 locations in 49 U.S. states,
but Washington D.C., 7 Canadian provinces, Australia, England, Spain
and Uganda. Campaigns were held in 13 Michigan cities. Nationwide,
there were at least 604 turnarounds, where women seeking abortion
changed their minds. Several people quit their jobs in the abortion
industry, and clinics advertised immediate openings on their staffs. A
number of abortion centers were closed on days when abortions are
usually performed. Tens of thousands of people took part in 40 Days for
Life events, many engaging in pro-life activities for the first time in their
lives. You may never know the fruit of your efforts, but you should know
your witness and sacrifice do not go unnoticed – THANK YOU. May God
bless you for all your effort for the unborn.
While this Fall’s 40 Days for Life campaign has ended, the work is not
over. Please consider how you may continue to help bring a culture of
life to our nation. Here are some thoughts on how you can help:
• Continue to pray and fast for the end of abortion. Even if 40 Days is
not in front of the clinic, women continue to have abortions at
WomanCare. Consider going and praying in front of the clinic on
your own. Saturdays are especially a busy day. There will be an
online calendar at www.vigilcalendar.com/southfield to sign up for
times to pray from 7 am to 5 pm Monday – Saturday. Come and
pray for Life
• Volunteer to be a side-walk counselor.

• Contact your local Right To Life Office on how you can help (Right To

• Encourage your children to become involved in or start a pro-life

• Talk to your family, friends and neighbors about life issues. Silence
breeds apathy and ignorance. We need to help educate people
on the reality of abortion and how it really impacts society, not just
the women making the “choice”.

What was St. Padre
Pio's inner spiritual
journey like? You can learn more about
him in the newly received book, Secrets
of a Soul: Padre Pio's Letters to His Spiritual
Directors. "This rare glimpse into the heart
and soul of Padre Pio reveals the
profound spirituality and humanity of the
beloved Capuchin . . . Beyond the
extraordinary events that accompanied
Padre Pio's life, these intimate letters attest
to his personal struggles, worries,
temptations and fears. He suffered much,
but hoped even more in the One he
loved more, Christ Crucified. The letters . .
. prove once again that 'difficulties and
sorrows, if accepted out of love, are
transformed into a privileged way of
holiness' (quote by Pope John Paul II on
back cover). Section 9, Saints)

Surrender: Stuff
Sunday, November 18, 7:30 to 9 pm
Since we will not be meeting on the first Sunday of
Advent we will be starting our Advent series a week

the stuff they own than protecting life, we will be
finding out how we can get the “junk” out of our lives in
order to be closer to Christ.

Grade School Happenings
Art Room
It’s an Art Fair Year! Mark your calendars and save the date for Thursday, March 13, 2013!
First grade artists are finishing up painting pumpkin perspective. They drew with oil pastels and glue and
then they painted over to create a resin.
Our second grade artists have started working on the infamous fish paintings. They reviewed the story The
Rainbow Fish. Then they decided how they could make their fish different. Look for these masterpieces at the
next Dads’ Club Pancake Breakfast.
Revisiting the works of Pablo Picasso is the focus of third grade art. They recently took home their
Halloween composition in his style.
Fourth graders are studying Bridget Riley, an Op artist as they create optical illusion compositions with
complimentary colors.
Fifth graders are finishing up their “Faces in a Crowd” projects and next will be starting their study of the
contemporary artist Wayne Thiebaud.
Finally, our sixth grade artists are starting a cross curricular unit with social studies where they will be studying
and creating Egyptian art in both classes.
We have a lot of talented artists at Shrine!

NATIONAL SHRINE of the Little Flower Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions
November 2012
General Intention: Ministers
of the Gospel. That bishops,
priests, and all ministers of
the Gospel may bear the
courageous witness of
fidelity to the crucified and
risen Lord.
Missionary Intention: Pilgrim Church. That
the pilgrim Church on earth may shine as
a light to the nations.
Year of Faith
Council Quotes
“As often as the
sacrifice of the cross
by which “Christ our
Pasch is sacrificed” is
celebrated on the
altar, the work of our
redemption is carried
out. Likewise, in the sacrament of the
Eucharistic bread, the unity of believers,
who form one body in Christ, is both
expressed and brought about. All men
are called to this union with Christ, who is
the light of the world, from whom we go
forth, through whom we live, and towards
whom our whole life is directed.” (Lumen
Gentium 3)
How is the sacrament of the Eucharistic
bread lived out in my life during the
week?
Prayer
O God, who left us the Eucharist as the
memorial of your Passion, grant that we
may always experience in our lives the
fruits of your redemption. We ask this
through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
