“We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.”

October 2, 2011 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

October

What a great time of year this is. Fall

colors begin to appear, no more hot humid

weather, apple cider, and for Father

Camilleri lots of football. It is also the month

that begins with the feast of our patron saint,

Saint Thérèse the Little Flower. We began

with the All Schools Mass last Friday and

Solemn Vespers with Bishop Cepeda on

Friday evening. We continue through the

month with the church appropriately

decorated for her feast.

Homecoming takes place next Sunday

afternoon, October 9. The Hall of Fame

inductions happen the night before. I regret

that I will miss these since I will be away on

pilgrimage in Europe.

October is also the month of the Holy

Rosary. I will be in Fatima and will pray for all

of you. I would encourage all to pray the

rosary together as a family during October.

Father Hayes

As many of you know, this

past May, Father James Hayes,

former Pastor of Shrine from

1966—74, passed away at the

age of 97. What you may not

know is that prior to his passing

Father Hayes named The National Shrine of

the Little Flower as one of the charitable

beneficiaries from his estate. It is gratifying to

know that Father Hayes thought so highly of

the Shrine Parish Community and that it

meant so much in his life that he set aside a

gift to benefit the future of the parish upon

his passing. In his way, perhaps Father Hayes

continues to lead this parish by his example.

So many times today, I hear families and

individuals worry that they can’t contribute

Bearings

Notes from Monsignor Easton

to the health and well being of Shrine as much as they

would like to at this time. But like Father Hayes, I would

encourage fellow parishioners to consider a planned

Charitable Contribution Legacy Gift that will benefit the

Parish at a future date. This gift could be in the form of a

bequest, life insurance policy, or charitable annuity. If you

have questions on how to go about setting up this type of

gift please contact Matt York in the Development Office at

248.541.4122, ext. 455.

Healing Service

Emmanuel Healing Ministry invites you to come to a Healing Service on Thursday,

October 6 at the National Shrine of the Little Flower from 7 to 9 pm. Confessions will

be available at 6:20 pm. Mass with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will

be offered followed by the opportunity to be prayed over for any intention. Fr. Alex

Kratz, OFM, will preside. Call Margaret Williams 248.477.0767 for information.

Coffee and Donuts

We will have coffee and donuts after the 9 am Mass on Sunday,

October 2 for the feast day of St Thérèse which is the day before. Hope

to see you all there!

Clothing Drive Coming Up

As the weather gets cooler, the St. Vincent de

Paul Society again asks your help for the needy.

Please start gathering your outgrown, unused,

or extra clothing for our upcoming annual par-

ish collection. For your convenience, bags may

be picked up from the church vestibules on the

weekend of October 8-9, 2011. The clothing

bundles may be dropped off at the SVDP truck before or after weekend

masses on October 15-16, 2011. The truck will be located in the Grade

School parking lot at the corner of 12 Mile Road and Linwood.

Please note our next parish clothing drive will not be until the Fall of 2012.

Thank You!

We did it! With the help of so many of you, we reached

our goal for this year’s Walk for the Poor. Thank you! We

had a great day—lots of good people from many metro

Detroit parishes, lots of sunshine and smiles, water and

granola bars as we walked the 5k walk by way of the

Dequindre Cut in the Milliken State Park and up Gratiot to

the St. Vincent de Paul Van Elsander Center. We all learned

more about our city on foot, and the great new walking

and bike path from the Detroit River to Gratiot. Thanks to National Shrine Walkers:

Norma, Therese, Anne Marie, Jim, Elizabeth, and David and any others from the

National Shrine I didn’t see on the walk. When we returned to the riverfront,

volunteers had warm hot dogs and pizza donated by Domino’s ready. Thank you

very much for generously supporting us in raising money to help those in great need.

Council Guidelines

The Archdiocese of Detroit has issued new guidelines for all consultative bodies

including Vicariate Councils, Parish Pastoral Councils, Parish Finance Councils, and

related bodies. To bring these into effect, the Shrine Parish Pastoral Council, Finance

Council, and the Unified School Board will have a joint information meeting in

November to review the new guidelines and our compliance with them.

Rosie, Carlito, and Kodiak

Everyone enjoyed Step by Step. It was a lot of fun. Next week Rosie and Kodiak

will give an accounting of their support. Since I will be away, Rosie and Carlito will

hold down the fort. The other priests will take care of them. The only thing that they

really have to watch is that Rosie gets ONLY ONE dinner a day. She has been known

to trick people into giving her as many of 4 dinners in one day.

Kodi will be away visiting with his best friend and trainer Karen. I am so happy that

they really like each other.

SCRIP

Shrine Catholic SCRIP orders are

collected every Monday morning

at the Grade and High School

offices until 8:30 am. Please go to

Shrine EdLine to see updated

information and updated retailers'

list. Any questions, please email

Mar y A nn M c C o ur t, S C RIP

coordinator, at

[email protected].

Entertainment Books

We are selling the new Entertain-

ment Books at the high school main

office. The books are $25 which is a

bargain compared to purchasing

them in a store at $35. Proceeds

from the sale will be divided be-

tween the Nicaragua Mission Trip

and the ski club. Please consider

helping our students participate in

these opportunities. Thank you,

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration

"Whenever I ask a favor from the Blessed Virgin, I

receive immediate help."

- St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face

"Father Maximilian (Kolbe), preparing us for more

difficult trials, encouraged us to heroic perseverence. He said,

'Let us be prepared for that last moment....Our best preparation

will be effected when we entrust ourselves completely to the

Immaculate Mother. Let's make a contract with her to this

effect: Immaculate Mother, I surrender myself totally to you for

the love of you, and I am willing to remain forgotten, comfortless,

scorned, and friendless in this camp, even though others return

home. Furthermore, I am willing to die on this hard ground, in the

company of these frigid hearts, and to be buried in that

cemetary in the forest, if it is your will. If we make such a

commitment to the Immaculate Mother, even if we are set free,

we shall have the same merit as if we actually passed through it

all.'"

- I Knew St. Maximilian, by J. Mlodozeniec

Please call Marie Lama if you are able to help with any of the

following Holy Hours. Her number is 248.655.0309. Open Holy

Hours: Monday, 1 am, 9 pm, 11 pm; Wednesday, 1 am (after

Oct. 12); Thursday, 11 am, noon, 2 pm,; Friday, 11 am, 1 pm, 2

pm, 8 pm; : Sunday, 9, 10 am and 2, 3, 5, 6 pm; Monday, 10 am

and 7 pm; Tuesday, 1 and 10 pm; Wednesday, 9, 11 am and 3,

11 pm; Thursday, 10, 11 am; Friday, 9, 11 am and 1 pm, 7 pm;

and Saturday, 7 pm.

We are in need of captains and divisional leaders who are

committed to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. If you would

like more info on what those roles entail, please contact Marie at

the above number.

Ask one friend to join in our adoration of Jesus in the blessed

sacrament. Just think if each adorer brought one person in, we

probably would not have any open holy hours and our lord

would be greatly honored. Think about asking one friend or one

family member to sign up for a holy hour.

Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us!

If you know residents at the facility or you would

like to join us for Mass to pray and sing, you are

welcome. For more information, contact Sister

Mass for Commerce

Everyone is invited to join His Excellency Archbishop Allen Vigneron

and the Catholic business and professional community at the 18

th

Annual Mass for Commerce at 8 am on Wednesday, October 19, at

the Chapel of Sacred Heart Major Seminary, 2701 W. Chicago Blvd.,

Detroit.

This celebration of the Eucharist reminds Catholic men and

women at all levels of business and professions of the need to

incorporate their faith into their daily lives, that they are not just

business and professional people who happen to be Catholic, but

people who recognize they are stewards of God’s gifts and their

need for the Holy Spirit to be with them, guiding them every day.

A breakfast will follow Mass. For more information, call

The feast day of our Parish patron saint,

St. Thérèse of Lisieux is

Oct. 1st. What has

attracted so many

people to her and her

"little way"? Her

autobiography, The Story of a Soul, tells

how she developed it. Many volumes

have expounded on the wisdom

contained in what at first sight might seem

so simple or simplistic, but actually

show the great depth in how her lived

experience led her to sanctity. To name

only a few available books: Therese the

Saint Who Loved Us: A Personal View, by

Arthur Cavanaugh; With Empty Hands: The

Message of St. Therese of Lisieux , and The

Power of Confidence: Genesis and

Structure of the 'Way of Spiritual

Childhood's of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, by

Conrad De Meester, O.C.D.; A Retreat

With Therese of Lisieux: Loving Our Way

Into Holiness by Elizabeth Ruth Obbard,

her.

Perpetual Mass Enrollment Cards

The National Shrine of the Little Flower now has

a beautiful six page perpetual Mass card

available at the Parish rectory office and the

National Shrine gift shop. With this enrollment, the person or

persons, living or deceased, will be remembered in a Mass once

a month at the National Shrine on or near the first Friday of each

month.

The Masses will be celebrated every month in perpetuity. The

suggested offering for the enrollment card and a card suitable

to be given to family or individuals is $25 per card.

A Family Perspective

Every family is visited by difficult

times which can unite or

divide. These hardships,

which we would quickly

reject, hold the potential

to be the unifying

“cornerstone” where we drop our

pettiness and defenses and pull together,

linked by a common bond and love for

one another. - Bud Ozar

Funding Opportunities for Shrine Catholic Grade School!

Background

The Shrine Catholic Grade School (SCGS) Grant Initiatives Committee (GIC) was initiated by a parent who

had witnessed another school using grants to supplement funding for specific projects, curriculum content

areas and general improvements. Principal Sharon Dixon and Assistant Principal Kelly Neighbors were very

supportive of the idea and the GIC was formed in the Spring of 2010. Since then, many interested parents

have taken lead roles in grant research and writing which have already brought benefits to SCGS.

Objectives

The objective of the GIC is to support SCGS teaching initiatives by defraying costs to the school or reducing

out-of-pocket costs to the parents. The GIC has already reviewed over 40 grant possibilities and applied for

five grants. Many grants are in the process of being applied for right now: grants from ING and Fender are in

process for the purchase of musical instruments. In addition, a Captain Planet Foundation grant is being

researched to explore the feasibility of a cafeteria recycling program to add to our paper and bottle/can

recycling now in place. Other funding in-process includes: a Toshiba America Foundation grant which would

be used to fund a comprehensive Sixth grade Astronomy lesson and the Dollar General Foundation Literacy

Grant to obtain software and other tools to enhance reading skills and for reading enrichment.

Progress to Date

Funding in the amount of $500 was received for Mrs. Hazen’s 6

th

Graders to visit the Detroit Institute of Arts in

2010. This funding was secured through the Michigan Humanities Council and covered both transportation

and admission to the museum for students. In 2011, a grant of over $600 was awarded for the same trip from

Buddy’s Pizza.

How You Can Help

The GIC meets once a month throughout the academic year to discuss grants in progress and research future

grants for new teacher and school requests. Meetings are usually held the third Thursday of the month from 7-8

pm. Contact any member (see newsletters on Edline) of the GIC or the school office at 248.541.4622 for more

information if you would like to get involved!

Arts, Beats and Eats 2011 - Thank you!

Over the Labor Day Weekend the National Shrine Parish Community took part in the Arts, Beats and Eats

Festival held in downtown Royal Oak. Over 125 members of the Parish Community volunteered their time to

staff a beverage booth downtown or supervise and help park cars in the Grade School parking lot. This year

we experienced Michigan weather in all it’s glory, from hot blazing sunshine and humidity approaching 100

degrees, to violent thunderstorms packing high winds and rain, and finally ending the weekend with cool 60

degree fall weather. In the process we earned close to $10,000 for our efforts. Overall I believe everyone

involved enjoyed themselves and hopefully look forward to next year’s festival. A special thanks to Tim Pruse

and Leslie Kehoe for their extra help in planning and coordinating this year’s event. Also thank you to the High

School Dads’ Club helping with setup and shutdown of the Grade School Parking lot operations. I would like

to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved and point them out to their fellow Parish Community

members for their sacrifice and commitment, in alphabetic order:

Shrine Ladies Guild

Consider serving our Lord Jesus

Christ, his Church and your National

Shrine of the Little Flower Parish by

working together and making friends

with many other dedicated, Catholic women of all

ages.

Recognizing an important role and needing the

talents of Shrine Ladies, in 1963, Fr. Coughlin

established the Shrine Ladies Guild as a volunteer

service group, chartered to serve the Shrine Parish.

Shrine Ladies Guild hosts many important receptions

throughout the year including the Feast of St.

Thérèse, special events at the church, Farewell

Receptions for Priests, the Annual Anniversary Mass,

and other occasions as the church calls.

Not only are there opportunities to help host

receptions, many of our members fill other important

roles; from baking goodies for our church

receptions, to providing food and working funeral

lunches; to sewing beautiful items for the

hospitalized, and baking wonderful desserts for our

bi-annual bake sales. We are members of the

Council of Catholic Women; we host CCW

luncheons, and the annual Operation Layette Baby

Shower. We pray for one another at our regular

meetings and we participate in annual Days of

Reflection.

Each September during our membership drive,

we ask for a small donation of $5 from parish

members to help fund our many activities. All

members may determine how they would most like

to be active in the Ladies Guild and serve our Parish.

Every June we come together in our Faith to

celebrate our accomplishments, enjoy friendships

and present Monsignor with a contribution to the

Master Plan during our annual potluck dinner!

The National Shrine of the Little Flower is a very

special parish and the ladies of the Shrine Ladies

Guild are blessed to be called to serve. Whether

you have a little time or alot, perhaps you love to

bake or you would like to serve at funeral luncheons,

consider how you can serve our Lord and our Parish

by joining the Ladies Guild, today!
