Shrine Herald Royal Oak, MI www.shrinechurch.com “We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.” October 4, 2009 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Thanks For The Feast Sincere thanks to everyone who made the Feast of Saint Thérèse a very special day in the life of our parish. Her feast day provides us with the opportunity to focus on her heroic love for God and to inspire us that we too can do even the little things with great love for God. Confirmation I also want to thank everyone involved in the celebration of Confirmation this weekend. This is a most important moment in the Faith Life of our young people and the entire parish community. Confirmation is another and important step in the journey of faith. It is not the last step. Once individuals have received the gifts of the Holy Spirit through Confirmation, they must then use those gifts in the building up of the Kingdom of God. I look forward to the young people who are being confirmed to become lectors, ministers of hospitality, extraordinary ministers of holy communion, volunteers for the shelter, pro -life advocates and being involved in the many works of the Church. Congratulations to all of them and blessings in all your endeavors. Homecoming This Sunday, October 4, is Shrine Catholic High School’s Annual Homecoming Game. Come out to the game and root for the home team. It is always a great Fall event in the life of the school and the parish. Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton continued on page 3 ... 40 Days For Life I strongly encourage every member of the National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish, both young and old, to participate in the 40 Days for Life Campaign. Thank You! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Rosie ‘n I thank you for the generous contributions for the work of St. Vincent de Paul you sent our team. Counting three pledges that are still outstanding, we raised about $1,800. Other National Shrine walkers also raised significant dollars. We all had a great time on our Saturday morning walk-a-thon, visited with folks we hadn’t met before, and raised some really needed funds for the ongoing work of St. Vincent de Paul. One mother of nine children joined in this walk because years ago when her family was in dire need, St. Vincent de Paul helped her through hard times. For her, it was payback time!

Watch for a few photos and a grand total, soon. And, THANK YOU to all National Shrine Walkers and Sponsors.

Widowed in Recent Years? Women and men whose spouse has died in the past few years are invited for "Coffee and Conversation" with focus on your needs, interests and ways of coping now that your spouse is gone. We will share ideas on what may be helpful for this part of your life-journey. We will meet on October 15, from 10 to 11:30 am, Room B.

Park in the 12 mile lot and go to the receptionist for directions to Room B.

Please call Sister Noreen and leave your name and phone number so we can plan accordingly. 248.541.4122, ext. 411.

Holy Land Next Saturday, October 10, I will be setting out on our two week pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Father Mąka, Father Siaosi, and I will be with 29 pilgrims on a journey of faith. I have had the blessing of being in the Holy Land at least 10 times and sometimes for extended stays. For all of the others, including Father Mąka and Father Siaosi, it will be their first time in the Holy Land. Pray that we all remain safe and healthy, and that the experience is rich in blessings that we can share when we return home.

St. Francis Pet Blessing

Rosie & Carlito Rosie and Carlito invite all of their fellow pet parishioners to a blessing for pets. This event is annually held on the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. Since his feast falls on a Sunday this year, the blessing will take place on the next day, Monday, October 5, at 4:30 in the afternoon in the area of the outdoor Stations of the Cross on 12 mile road. Everyone is welcome to come if you have a pet or not. Rosie and Carlito are not biased, on second thought Carlito is. They will be happy to see you, well at least Rosie will be.

Mass Intentions Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "To remain a little child before God is to recognize our nothingness and to expect everything from Him ...we experience such great peace when we depend on one but God...It did not matter whether I fell at every moment; for, seeing my weakness, Jesus carried me in His arms."

- St. Thérèse of Lisieux

“What truth of the Gospel message is, in fact, more fundamental and more universal than this one: God is our Father and we are His children.. ...Yes, Thérèse was the child. She was the child "trustful" to the point of heroism. ...Yes, she knew this savor and this price. For anyone who reads attentively her Story of a Soul, it is clear that this savor of filial trust comes, like the perfume of roses, from the stalk which also bears thorns. If, indeed, we are "children, then we are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him (Rom. 8:17). It is for that reason, precisely, that the filial trust of little Thérèse, St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus but also "of the Holy Face," is so heroic, because it comes from fervent communion with Christ's sufferings."

- Pope John Paul II on St. Thérèse

Open Hours: Sunday, 2 pm; Wednesday, 10 am; and Friday, 2 am. Partners are desired for the following Holy Hours: Sunday, 10 am, 2 and 6 pm; Monday, 5 am and 4 pm; Wednesdays, 4 pm; Thursdays, 10 am and noon; Fridays, 11 am and 4 pm; Saturdays, 9 pm, and the 1 pm hour on Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday; and the 7 pm hour on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Call Marie Lama at 248.655.0309 if you are interested in signing up for a Holy Hour or are interested in being a substitute.

Items posted on the Adoration Chapel vestibule bulletin board or that are placed in the vestibule should be cleared through Marie Lama beforehand. Thank you for your cooperation.

Life Matters

40 Days for Life

Why should you consider taking an hour or two to participate in the 40 Days for Life campaign and join others in praying for the end of abortion in front of an abortion clinic? You may say “I pray for the end of abortion everyday; I don’t need to go to a clinic to pray”. We are

called to be “salt” and “light”. We are called to be witnesses of the truth and love of Jesus Christ. That means in both voice and action. We must help our family, friends and neighbors understand that abortion is not a “choice” that is good for women. Not only does it kill the next generation of children, but it kills the spirit of the mother in countless ways. We must help the woman understand they have other choices and there are people who will help them. By being in front of the abortion clinic for 40 days, thousands of people will notice. Maybe

a clinic worker will say “How can I continue to participate in this killing…”. Maybe a woman going into the clinic will say: “These people are a sign from God for me to keep this baby…” Maybe a passerby will say: “I don’t agree with abortion either, maybe I should do something too”. Maybe a woman how has had an abortion will say: “I’m hurting from my abortion and I need help…” Join the thousands of people across the country participating in the 40 Days for Life campaign and volunteer to pray in front of WomanCare in Lathrup

Village.

¨ For more information, on joining your fellow parishioners on the special designated National Shrine Days of Sunday October 11, Saturday October 17; Wednesday, October 28; contact Laura Dysarz at 258.588.1999 or [email protected]. LifeChain

Today, across the U.S. and Canada from 2:30 to 3:30 pm, join

hundreds of thousands of participants standing silently in peaceful, prayerful witness to their commitment to love and protect the unborn and their mothers. Join your fellow National Shrine parishioners in front of the church on Woodward to form a human chain for Life. The Life Chain is facilitated by Right to Life – Lifespan. In

one hour, you can make a difference. .

Crosses for Life

The Right to Life—Lifespan crosses will be installed on the lawn of

the National Shrine of the Little Flower on Saturday, October 3. The crosses are a visible sign of the tragedy of abortion. Abortion destroys the greatest gift given by our creator—the gift of life.

Please join us next Saturday at 9 am. Volunteers are needed to help with the installation of the crosses. Please be a part of this annual life project and bring a hammer or mallet to help with the installation.

Lending Library October 2 was the feast of the Guardian

Angels, and September 29 was the feast of the three great archangels, Sts.

Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Angel means messenger, and God has given us a great gift in sending them to help the human race. In recent years, angels have become very popular, and many books have been written about them, including many "new age" versions, which are not an accurate portrayal. You can read about what the Catholic Church teaches about them in our selection of books.

Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). For information call Kathy McGuire at 248.541.6834 or JoAn Gilleran at 248.629.4045.

If you have any donations please drop them off in the marked box at the top of the stairs leading to the Youth Room. Also, if you would like to donate money for our trip to World Youth Day you can do so by visiting the donations page at www.shrinechurch.com and selecting “World Youth Day.” All donations will go towards Cross Connections High School Youth Ministry’s trip to Madrid, Spain in August of 2011. Thank you for your generous donations!

Loving Unconditionally Have you ever wondered why you struggle with your Faith?

Have you ever hoped for teens that do not rebel, and enjoy spending time with their parents?

Do you want to be the best grandparent ever? We would be very offended if someone said you are not very loving…. right!

Well, sometimes our love is conditional!

Come hear more about the power of Unconditional Love, and how to communicate it well like Christ did!

Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions

October 2009 General: That Sunday may be lived as the day on which Christians gather to celebrate the risen Lord,

participating in the Eucharist. Mission: That the entire People of God, to whom Christ entrusted the mandate to go and preach the Gospel to every creature, may eagerly assume their own missionary responsibility and consider it the highest service

they can offer humanity.

Grade School Happenings

Preschool

September was a very busy month in the Preschool. Along with making new friends, we were excited to renew old friendships. Every Wednesday, our special “Story Lady,” pays us a visit. She teaches us new finger plays and reads some great stories. We also make special cards for some homebound seniors, and Mrs. Sifton delivers them for us.

Autumn has come with its many beautiful changes. We learn why the leaves change color. Chlorophyll is a new vocabulary word. We know that without the sun the leaves cannot remain green.

October brings celebrating the Feast of St. Thérèse, Fire Safety Week, and of course the talk of Halloween. We are counting the days until it arrives. The preschoolers are also learning that a pumpkin starts out as a flower, then becomes a little green ball which turns into a beautiful orange pumpkin. Did you know that bats are not only Halloween decorations, but they are our special friends? They eat so many insects. At the end of the month the children will wear their costumes to class and parade into the “Big School.”

November will bring the making of our traditional Native American Indian outfits. It is also a time to talk about and remember all of the wonderful blessings that God has given to us.

Happy Autumn from the Preschool!

- Mrs. Foerg

Academy Update By Stephanie Preweda

The sports teams of Shrine Catholic Academy are already kickin’. The girls and boys soccer teams have started on the right foot. So far the girls are undefeated, and to make things even better, they have received new jerseys. The boys soccer team is doing very well also; they have only lost one game. The energy and determination during the team practices proves that these kids are here to win it. Both teams are anticipating the CYO championships.

But it doesn’t end there -- the volleyball team is off to a great start as well.

“We have a lot of fun,” says Skylar Tisko ‘15, a member of the volleyball team. The volleyball practices are going good as well. The girls are growing stronger and more skilled every week. The volleyball team is also excited to show off their new jerseys.

The Academy is off to a great start of the school year. “The teachers are excited about starting the school year on the right foot,” said teacher Mrs. Jomarie Reichel. With their weekly liturgy and strong work ethics they are ready to take on anything.

National Shrine Adult Formation Featured Programs

Moms & The Word

This class meets with John LaCroix in Seton Hall on Wednesday mornings whenever the Grade School is in session and will begin on October 14, 9:30 am to 11 am. This program is designed for moms who wish to attend Scripture and Adult formation discussions without the need for babysitters. For further information contact Lisa Carlesso at 248.733.9009 or Mary Jo Wisneski 248.586.1495.

Scripture/Catechism Series

A Tuesday Evening Scripture series “The Parables of Jesus” hosted by Mary Martens begins on October 6 in the National Shrine Conference Center, Rm B from 7 to 9 pm. Cost of materials is $7. The New American Bible and Catechism of the Catholic Church are used. Pre-register by email: [email protected] or by phone: 248.549.1370.

Adult Scripture & Formation Series

An evening Scripture series involving the “Acts of the Apostles” and the Epistles of St. Paul will be presented by John LaCroix on Thursdays 7 to 9 pm beginning October 22 at Shrine Catholic High School. The program follows “Acts” and departs when St. Paul writes an Epistle so that we study them in the order they are written. Maps, charts, and materials on social, political, and economic issues of the time will also be featured. We hope to bring to life the times of St. Paul and his teaching as it evolves under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, especially the Theology of the Mystical Body. For information and registration, contact [email protected] or at 248.374.9045. Bring a Bible and a friend!

Knights of Columbus Tempus Fugit (Latin for Time Flies), as the Fall begins we find ourselves already in the third month of our fraternal year. So much we have already accomplished and yet still so much more that still will be. With our newly elected officers, we are hoping for another year of Charity, Unity, and Fraternalism in this 2009-2010 “Year of the Volunteer.” What this means is that we need to pool our time, talent and treasure to give back to God who has given so much to us. As Knights we do this through our many community service and outreach programs.

One of such was our Annual Soccer Challenge held on September 26. While participant attendance was quite low, we never the less had a great showing of Knights ready and willing to make the event a success.

Another perpetually successful event is our Annual (All You Can Eat) Fish Fry. These take place the first Friday of each month (October, November, December). The revenue taken in from this event, from the many hours of hard work by our Brother Knights allows us to continue our fraternal service. The first Fish Fry is Friday, October 9 from 4:30 to 7 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall – 870 N. Main Clawson, MI 48017. Please join us and help in making this event a continued success.

Remember, we are always looking for new members; any practicing Catholic Man over the age of 18 may join our ranks. One need not be a National Shrine parishioner to join our council. Current members are always looking to add insurance members to our council. Buying life insurance from the Knights of Columbus not only helps you, but helps the entire Order as well. New members please contact our Membership Director Sean McCarthy at 248.439.0991 or [email protected]. For your insurance needs please contact our Field Agent Kevin Murphy at [email protected] or 248.439.0409.

A successful council can only exist because of an active membership. A reminder to all members we meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the National Shrine of the Little Flower Conference Center. We hope to see all of you there.

May the Blessings of Almighty God be Upon Each of You Vivat Jesus
