CSA If you have not
yet picked up your
CSA Commitment
Card, please do so
as soon as possible. They will be available at
both Heritage Hall and at the National Shrine
Conference Center this weekend after the 9
and 10:45 am, and 12:30 pm Masses. They
can also be picked up at the Parish Office
during the week.
This Week This week, Eighth Grade Academy
students will graduate on Monday evening.
The Sixth Grade Shrine Catholic Grade
School students will be promoted to the
Academy on Wednesday evening. The last
day of school is Friday, June 10. Time goes
by so very quickly.
I will be here to celebrate the Eighth
Grade Graduation Mass. On Wednesday I
will be leaving to celebrate my nephews
wedding in Richland, Washington, and will
miss the Sixth Grade promotion and the last
day of school with the volunteer
appreciation Mass. Simply can‘t be two
places at once. Father Lang will do a great
job filling in for me.
Next Sunday is Pentecost and the end of
the Easter Season. I understand that in the
New Roman Missal we will no longer refer to
the Easter Season, but will say Easter Time
instead. One more change to get used to.
Oops My Mistake Last week I reported that the names for
the new Parish Council Members would be
chosen on Pentecost Sunday. That is our
usual practice. I totally forgot that because
Pentecost is so late this year, the Council
Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton
decided to do the drawing two weeks ahead of time so that
the new members could be at the last meeting of the year.
As a result, the drawing took place at the 10:45 am Mass last
weekend. I want to thank all of those who were willing to
serve and allowed their names to be placed in nomination.
The four new members are:
Brian Wolff
Jack Crusoe
Sharon Bolitho
Candice Schultz
The Council Meeting takes place this Monday.

Mass in Spanish
Beginning this first Sunday of June, Mass will be celebrated in Spanish every
Sunday at 4 pm here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower. Father Espinoza and
the group that has been gathering for that Mass once a month feel that there is a
need for a greater consistency in the schedule for Mass in Spanish. We will try this for
the summer to see how it works. Everyone is welcome; you do not have to be
Hispanic to come.
Rosie, Carlito and Kodiak
Rosie and Kodi went to the lake on Memorial Day. It was a welcome relief from
the heat. We were all surprised at how high the water is. I have never seen it so high.
Your feet get wet when you walk on the dock and you have to take a big step up to
get on the boat. Rosie swam and swam all afternoon. Kodi waded up to his chin.
He would go after Rosie but as soon as his feet could no longer touch bottom, he
would abandon the chase and head for shore.
If you know residents at the facility or you would like to join us
for Mass to pray and sing, you are welcome. For more
information, contact Sister Noreen 248.541.4122, ext. 411.

Mass Intentions Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Early Birds: We Need You!!!
I envy you. You are at your best when most of
us are at our worst. You are bright eyed and
raring to go when we don't even want anyone to
turn on the lights. I'd like you to wake up a little early and
spend some time with your best friend, Jesus. I have a few
hours open at the Adoration Chapel that would be perfect
for an early bird like you. You'll find that your Adoration Hour
soon becomes the highlight of your week. Think of it, you and
your best friend one on one, talking about the things that are
most important to you. Life is a puzzle. Jesus has the
answer. Fact is, Jesus is the answer and He'll show you how to
put all the pieces together to make a heavenly picture. Stop
by the Adoration Chapel any time to say, "Hello". Your best
friend is waiting for you. Why not call me, Marie Lama, at
248.655.0309, and make a commitment. There are special
early bird hours waiting for you:!
Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us!

Life Matters ―We shall not weary, we shall not rest, until every unborn child is
protected in law and welcomed in life. We shall not weary, we shall not
rest, until all the elderly who have run life‘s course are protected against
despair and abandonment, protected by the rule of law and the bonds
of love. We shall not weary, we shall not rest, until every young woman is
given the help she needs to recognize the problem of pregnancy as the
gift of life. We shall not weary, we shall not rest, as we stand guard at the
entrance gates and the exit gates of life, and at every step along the
way of life, bearing witness in word and deed to the dignity of the
human person—of every human person.‖ (By Richard John Neuhaus)

Missing Shrine Heralds from
our Archives The National Shrine archives contain all
the Shrine Heralds ever published since
November 9, 1935 and they are bound in
yearly books. We recently noticed that we
are now missing two years of these
publications. They are the years of 1957 and 1982.
The 1957 book has been missing for a
number of years, but the 1982 book has
been missing for only about 1 to 2 years. If
anyone knows the whereabouts of these
books, please contact Jack Hoolehan at
the National Shrine Office, 248.541.4122, ext.

CSA Minute Christian Service and Health--Care Ministries
This week, members of the Christian Service Coordinators Association in the
Archdiocese of Detroit will gather for their annual field trip. Through the Office for Christian Service and
Health Care Ministries, your CSA gifts support the work of parish Christian service commissions and
coordinators, who are rooted in Catholic Social Teaching and dedicated to carrying out the social mission of
the Church. The purpose of the annual field trip is to increase coordinators‘ awareness of the types of
community outreach taking place throughout the Archdiocese, as well as to provide an opportunity for
informal networking with colleagues. The outing highlights best practices and encourages coordinators to
consider if what is being done in one parish might work in their own parish setting. Part of the Department of
Parish Life and Services, the Office for Christian Service and Health Care Ministries also includes the Hospital
Chaplaincy program, Ministry to Sick and Caregivers, and the Parish Nurse program. For more information
about Christian Service and Health Care Ministries, or other CSA-funded programs and ministries, please go

Grade School Happenings
Grade 2
The second graders have had such a wonderful
year! Our First Communion Masses on May 1 and May
7 were a stunning example of the beauty of true faith.
During the school Mass on Tuesday, May 10, the
children used American Sign Language to sign the
song, ―I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light‖ after
communion. It is truly a beautiful sight to see 79
children around the altar signing! The second graders
were shining with God‘s love in their beautiful outfits
and sweet smiles.
Along with discussing the blessings of the Eucharist,
we have been working on fractions, measurement
and multiplication in math, and perfecting the Six
Traits of Writing in grammar.
For social studies, the children are researching
America‘s five regions and will be creating PowerPoint
presentations to share what makes their region special
with their classmates. Just recently the second
graders experienced other cultures by attending a
cultural event known as Native Lands. We saw birds
of prey, animals from other parts of the world, and
they participated in Native American and African
dance.
On May 11, the children traveled upstairs to the
Science Lab to dissect sheep eyes to uncover how
the eye works.
All in all it is clear for everyone to see that our Shrine
Catholic Grade School second graders are absolutely
EXTRAORDINARY! Ms. Adams Mrs. Barbuscak Mrs. Nyikes

host families from Shrine Catholic Parish or Schools to
provide a loving home away from home for the
school year. As a host family, you will be provided
with a monthly stipend (approximately $700+ per
month) to cover costs of providing your exchange
student with meals, a bed, a place for their
belongings and transportation. For more

Roamin’ with Rosie
When last we left Roamin’ with Rosie, Kodi, Carlito and the cousin dogs were looking
for Rosie. They found a note that said that they had to go to the old mailroom. They
weren’t sure where it was. Let’s look in to see what happens next:
Kodi: Hey guys! I just got several emails from our friends. They said that the old mailroom
was the large room located under the St. Therese chapel which is now called the Youth
Room.
Carlito: All right, let‘s go. When I get a hold of that mangy mutt for playing this trick on us, I am going to give
her a piece of my beak. How dare she play such a trick!
Bella: Oh no- I don‘t have a good feeling about this.
Kodi: Yeah, how do we know the dog snappers aren‘t down there?
Carlito: It‘s nappers, not snappers!! And I can‘t believe you‘re scared! There are five of us and only one or two
them.
Charlie: All right- let‘s go.
They rush down the stairway by the ramp doors. The youth room door is open. They enter and in the middle
of the room laying on the floor is a sign.
Carlito: Its says, ―She forgot Hamtramck!‖
Kodi: Hamtramck?
Howie: Is that something to eat because I am getting hungry?
Charlie: Look! There‘s an arrow pointing at that doorway. (on the west side of the room)
Bella: Do we go?
Carlito: Of course, we go. Come on! (starts flying with the other dogs in pursuit).
They all go down the hallway and turn the corner. There, around the corner, is a stairway.
Howie: Where are we at?
Kodi: The sign says, ―Do not enter.‖
Howie: Should we go?
Charlie: I don‘t know, but it doesn‘t look good.
Bella: Maybe we should go back? It looks scary.
Kodi: We‘re so close now. I can sense it.
What will our animal friends do? Go up the stairway or go back? And what is so important about
Hamtramck, anyway? Let the animals know what you think by emailing them at [email protected]. Do
it now before it is too late!

National Shrine Area Girl Scouts 75th Anniversary Celebration
Sunday, June 26, 1:30 to 5:30 pm, National Shrine Conference Center
Do you remember this song? "Make New Friends, Keep the Old, One is Silver and the Other Gold."
All are welcome to this unique reunion celebration designed to invite past and present Girl Scouts,
Leaders, Parents, Grandparents, Great-Grandparents and anyone connected in any way with Girl
Scouting traditions at the National Shrine to get together again. Program-Current National Shrine
troops will have a display area with scrapbooks, photo albums, sashes, vests, troop projects, and
other mementos.
A guest book to sign and a "communication board" will be posted so that former friends can leave
messages and find each other again. Participants are asked to bring a bag of cookies and their own
beverage. The unopened bags of cookies will be donated to the food bank. Also bring your Girl
Scout memorabilia and photos. A commemorative, specially designed patch will be on sale for $3.
Contact Blanche Marie Smith at 248.545.4494 if you have any questions.
