Thoughts from Monsignor McClory Dear Parish Family: Unleash the Gospel Refection and Discussion series with Msgr. McClory “Unleash the Gospel” is the groundbreaking pastoral letter issued by Archbishop Vigneron following Synod ’16. It has now become a full-fledged movement within the Archdiocese. In the pastoral letter, Archbishop Vigneron thoughtfully outlines our challenges and opportunities to share the Good News of Jesus with others – and to allow the Gospel to transform our lives. Last year, we offered a four week study session in the evenings that quickly booked to capacity. This year, I am offering a four-week study and reflection series on Saturday mornings from 9:15-11:15 AM in the Conference Center beginning this Saturday February 16 and continuing on February 23, March 2, and March 9. This will allow people to attend the 8:30 AM Mass if they wish and then come by for some refreshments and reflection/discussion of the pastoral letter. The format is pretty simple. I will offer a powerpoint overview of the various sections of the letter – and then we have a chance for discussion and Q & A. Please come and bring a friend. For planning purposes, please register with our parish administrative assistant Kathy Morris at: [email protected] or call 248-541-4122, extension 1448. Rest In Peace Fr. Michael Heppen, CSC Fr. Michael Heppen, CSC, passed away on Monday morning February 4. He served as an associate pastor at Shrine from 2003-2007. May he rest in peace. In recent years, Fr. "The Sacrament of the Eucharist is far more powerful for the sanctification of souls than all other spiritual means of grace." ~Hidden Treasure; The Riches of the Eucharist

"He says, 'Yes, you need help from other people but first get Me. Attach yourself to Me. I will give you everything else, for I am the Lord of everything. I will give it to you renewed, restored, and you yourself will have new eyes and new ears. Enter the loneliness of faith, enter the loneliness, and you will be a new person. You will be new, because you will hear the voice simultaneously--My voice and that of men for whom I died. You will see into the hearts of men and bring them to me." ~In the Footprints of Loneliness; Catherine DohertyPlease call Joe or Marie Lama at 248.655.0309 or email us at [email protected] if you would like the privilege of a Holy Hour with Jesus, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. Below is an excerpt of a column written by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.; posted on January 17, 2019 (catholicphilly.com) “… Seventy years ago, abortion was a crime against humanity. Four decades ago, abortion supporters talked about the tragedy of abortion and the need to make it safe and rare. Those days are long gone. Now abortion is not just a “right,” but a right that claims positive dignity, the license to demonize its opponents and the precedence to interfere with constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech, assembly, and religion. We no longer tolerate abortion. We venerate it as a totem.People sometimes ask me if we can be optimistic, as believers, about the future of our country. My answer is always the same. Optimism and pessimism are equally dangerous for Christians because both God and the devil are full of surprises. But the virtue of hope is another matter. The Church tells us we must live in hope, and hope is a very different creature from optimism. The great French Catholic writer Georges Bernanos defined hope as “despair overcome.” Hope is the conviction that the sovereignty, the beauty, and the glory of God remain despite all of our weaknesses and all of our failures. Hope is the grace to trust that God is who he claims to be, and that in serving him, we do something fertile and precious for the renewal of the world. Our lives matter to the degree that we give them away to serve God and to help other people. Our lives matter not because of who we are; rather, they matter because of who God is. His mercy, his justice, his love — these are the things that move the galaxies and reach into the womb to touch the unborn child with the grandeur of being human. And we become more human ourselves by seeing the humanity in the poor, the weak, and the unborn child, and then fighting for it.Over the past 46 years, the ProLife movement has been written off as dying too many times to count. Yet again and again, we disappoint our critics and refuse to die. And why is that? It’s because the Word of God and the works of God do not pass away. No court decision, no law, and no political lobby can ever change the truth about when human life begins and the sanctity that God attaches to each and every human life. The truth about the dignity of the human person is burned into our hearts by the fire of God’s love. And we can only deal with the heat of that love in two ways. We can turn our hearts to stone. Or we can make our hearts and our witness a source of light for the world. Those who March for Life have already made their choice…”

The Ladies Guild purchased blankets for the homeless because the old wool blankets were heavily worn and needed dry cleaning each year. Thank you to the Ladies Guild who without hesitation offered to donate the blankets. The Knights of Columbus have responded with a contribution to help offset the cost the Ladies Guild will bear.Through the free will offering from the Taize prayer group, new pillows were purchased. The Taize prayer warriors consistently support Christian Service. Many people in need have received your prayerful consideration.

Donations may be made to Shrine-Warming Center to offset the cost of providing meals, juice, and maintenance. Prayers for the volunteers who help at the Center and for the people we serve are also appreciated.

he was a wonderful influence on the vocational discernment of Fr. Michael Palmer, CSC, who has kept me apprised of Fr. Heppen’s health in recent years. Fr. Palmer is a son of the parish who was ordained a priest in April 2017. He returns regularly on vacation times and offers Mass while here. He followed in Fr. Heppen’s footsteps by becoming a Holy Cross priest. Lord, Jesus, enfold Fr. Heppen in your mercy and open to him the gates of paradise. Amen.Jolly Pumpkin February Wednesday nights: Does your life feel, well, messy?During Wednesdays in February, the Archdiocese is sponsoring “Kergyma Nights” at the Jolly Pumpkin in downtown Royal Oak from 7:00-8:30pm. These evenings are designed to help answer these questions: • Does your life feel, well, messy?• Come learn what the Gospel reveals - that you

can be fulfilled. These are great evenings: a relaxed gathering, well suited for you to bring a friend who has been away from the church. Join in for a night of answers to some of the big questions we all have, as we share the core of what the Gospel reveals through short talks, discussion and Q&A with others who are asking the same questions as you are. For the homeless, it has been a difficult winter with temperatures well below zero. Typically at the overnight shelter there are from 75-90 guests each night. Last week the wind chill factor made it impossible for those who try to bear the cold to stay outdoors all night. On the coldest nights the overnight shelter welcomed 140 people avoiding the cold.

We will be collecting last year"s blessed palms to be burned. The bins will be in the vestibules of the church through the month of February. May God continue to bless you today tomorrow and always. Kathie Dorsch Worship Commission

looking for a few good Dads. The Dads Club motto:

“It’s for the kids”

What we do: Our organization enhances our kids' High School experience. We are always looking for Shrine Dads to help us with our support of the Shrine Kids by volunteering at our many events. These events are used to raise money that we give back for students programs.

During warmer weather, see the gardens or walk the grounds to visit the peaceful surroundings. Docents will guide you on your way to detail the extravagant history of the church.Groups of all sizes are welcome. Please call in advance so that preparations can be made for your visit. Your 2019 CSA Commitment Lending LibraryRemember Mother Angelica? Now you can read her insights, wit and wisdom in Raymond Arroyo's book Mother Angelica's Little Book of life Lessons and Everyday Spirituality. Some samples include "Whenever you make a deal with God be VERY specific." (page 5) or "If you are breathing and have two legs, you're called to holiness." (page 40). Mother never minced her words and her "shoot straight from the hip" style appealed to the people in the pews. "Living in the Present Moment," "Everyday Holiness", and "Living Prayer and True Spirituality" are a few of the chapter titles. "It doesn't take a lot to be holy, only thought and a little perseverance.".

Stewardship Thoughts Fifth Sunday in Ordinary TimeA theme of answering God’s “call” connects today’s Scripture readings. In a vision, the prophet Isaiah sees the glory of God revealed in the Temple and responds to the Lord, Here I am … send me! In St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, he professes his unworthiness of Jesus’ call: "Last of all, as to one abnormally born, He [Christ] appeared to me." Following the miraculous catch retold in St. Luke’s Gospel, Jesus summons Simon-Peter, James, and John to follow Him. They do, giving up everything. Are we responding to God’s call — in a spirit of evangelization, employing our God-given gifts in prayer, service, and generosity — to make disciples of all nations? To encourage religious vocations, please pray for the “Domestic Church.” Christ-centered families provide fertile ground for vocations. In addition, consider being charitable with your time and talent to a local Serra group or your parish vocation committee and, in addition, read Gift and Mystery, the book Pope St. John Paul II wrote on the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood.

EvangelizationMercy Nights throughout the Archdiocese are helping our faithful and the friends they invite who may not attend Mass regularly to experience Christ in a less formal setting. Like the “Come, Encounter Christ!” events, Mercy Nights feature scripture and the presence of Jesus through adoration, reconciliation and music. This program of the archdiocesan Office of Evangelization began last month, on various Friday evenings throughout the Archdiocese. Two Mercy Nights remain: at St. Thecla Parish in Clinton Township on February 15, and a Spanish version at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit on February 22. Each begins at 7 p.m.Your CSA gifts support the Evangelization Office’s work of helping people encounter God in a new way, such as through Mercy Nights and Kerygma Nights. For information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, go to aod.org.

Attention Parents of Preschoolers!Does your little one have a hard time holding still during Mass? Why not register him or her for Preschool Religious

Formation? Our specially designed sessions take place during most Sundays of the school year during the 9:00 am Mass. Children who are potty-trained and will be at least 3 by December 1 but have not started kindergarten yet are eligible. The children learn the patterns of the Mass as we start with an opening song, sing Alleluia, hear that Sunday’s gospel and then reinforce what we heard through an activity or craft. We share a simple snack before finishing with a closing song. The tuition is only $35 per year!
