“We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.”
June 12, 2011 Pentecost Sunday
Father Prus In two weeks, on Sunday, June 26,
everyone is celebrating Father Ed Prus‘ 50th
anniversary as a priest. The celebration
begins with a 1 pm Mass at St. James Parish
in Ferndale where Father is currently in
residence. After the Mass there will be a
reception with food and dancing to
celebrate the joy of this great occasion. For
more information, to RSVP, or to volunteer to
help go online to www.fatherprus.com.
Father Beto Espinoza Most of you are aware that Father Beto
suffers from kidney failure. Years ago he had
a kidney transplant that worked for a while
but has now failed. Father goes for dialysis
three times a week, and is awaiting the
possibility of a second transplant. Every
once in a while it gets the best of him and he
ends up in the hospital. At the end of last
year I did not put him on the regular Mass
schedule so that he could recuperate better.
He asked to be back on the schedule
because he wants to do his part.
We have tried to keep his schedule on the
light side. Father Lang, Father Anthony, and I
have repeatedly told him not to push it. If he
is the least tired we have asked him to call us
and we will gladly cover for him. A couple of
times he has stubbornly attempted to say
Mass only to realize that he was too sick to
do so. The result was that the Mass was
canceled, a communion service took place,
and Father ended up in emergency.
After one of these cancelations, I was
rudely accosted by a parishioner and taken
to task for being uncaring and demanding
too much of the man when I knew he was
sick. I was told that I am lazy and that I am
killing a good priest. I suppose everyone has
the right to their own opinion even if it bears
no resemblance to the truth.
Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton
What to do? Pray for Father Beto. We do our best as
priests to look out for him, but if you notice he is more tired
and run down than normal, please tell us. He is a good priest
and we need him healthy.
Father James Lowe Some time ago, Deacon Jim Lowe wrote to me with the
following request:
“You may remember me. I was a Life Teen Core member
in 2001 (at Shrine). I am now finishing my last year of
seminary and will be ordained a priest on June 11 in Ottawa,
ON. I would like to come back to the National Shrine to

A Message from Sister Noreen: I will be away from the parish and at our Sisters of
Charity motherhouse in Cincinnati for my Annual Retreat from Friday, June 17 to
Sunday, June 26. During this prayerful and reflective week, I will remember you, the
National Shrine community, in my prayer. Please pray for me, too.
Christian Service flows from the faith that we Catholic Christians nurture in a
prayer life that is rich and challenging. May the gospel of Jesus inspire and energize
each of us to continue giving compassion and attention to those most needy and
vulnerable in our circle of awareness.
Thank you for the generous responses you give on a regular basis to all the efforts
we make to live the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy in our parish outreach in
Christian Service. May the summertime offer each of you some Rest and Reflection
that will Renew you!
Sisters of Charity “Associates in Mission” The Sisters of Charity have a long history
at the National Shrine, having established the Shrine Catholic Schools many years
ago at the invitation of Father Coughlin. Our congregation of Sisters, like so many
others, also has a ―lay‖ membership program that invites men and women into a
special covenant with the Sisters of Charity. This special relationship strengthens the
spirituality and gifts of vowed religious and the covenanted laity, mutually. Currently,
we, Sisters of Charity have 185 Associates in Mission throughout the United States
who are deepening their faith and being attentive to living the Mission and Charism
of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati.
We, Sisters of Charity
urged by the love of Christ
and in the spirit of our founder,
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton,
strive to live Gospel values.
We choose to act justly,
to build loving relationships,
to share our resources with those in need,
and to care for all creation.
Our beloved Carol Hoolehan was an Associate in Mission, as is her husband Jack,
along with Randy Husaynu and Jamie Kelly. I am inviting others of you who may be
interested to talk with me or Sister Alicia, or one of these Associates. There are
brochures with more information that you may pick up at the parish reception desk
or call me, Sister Noreen at 248.541.4122, ext. 411.

celebrate a thanksgiving Mass. I actually had a powerful encounter with the Lord at
the National Shrine through the Eucharist. This is what began my journey toward
ordination. It is for this reason that I would like to request celebrating a thanksgiving
Mass on Sunday, June 26 at the Sunday Evening Mass. It is the solemnity of Corpus
Christi. I thought that would be most fitting.”
Father Lowe is a member of the Companions of the Cross out of Ottawa, Canada
and served as a deacon in Houston, Texas. Father will celebrate the 6 pm Mass on
Sunday, June 26.
Rosie, Carlito, and Kodiak
You have probably heard of the game ―Where‘s Waldo.‖ Well the Campana
boys have their own version called ―Where‘s Monsignor and Kodi.‖ Apparently they
have been quite successful with several sightings all around Royal Oak and Berkley.
Kodi also likes downtown Birmingham and Partridge Creek Mall.

Mass Intentions Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Retirees: Time to Set Your Alarm Clocks
You have one of the world's most precious
commodities: Time. While most folks are stuck to a
schedule, you can do whatever you want, whenever
you want.
We at the National Shrine are blessed to have a Perpetual
Adoration Chapel. Jesus is on hand to light the way and ease
peoples' burdens, 24 hours a day/seven days a week. Over the
year hundreds, maybe thousands, of people come when they
have a crisis in their lives: a breaking heart, sickness, or loss of a
loved one.
In order to keep the Adoration Chapel open for these people,
we have to have regularly scheduled adorers venerating the
Blessed Sacrament 24 hours a day.
Most of the time this is not a problem but sometimes, late at
night, early in the morning or on weekends or Holy Days, we run
short and need a few extra people to make the
commitment. We need you now. Contributing to an hour every
week will make a real contribution to the faith life of our entire
parish. It doesn't cost a thing, but I promise that your Holy Hour
will soon become one of the most meaningful hours of the
week. Call me, Marie Lama, at 248.655.0309 if you can spare an
hour out of your week. Late night and early morning
hours needing adorers: Monday, 1 and 5 am; Tuesday, 4 am;
Thursday, 4, 5, 7 am; and Friday, 4 am. Other open Holy Hours
include: Sunday, 10 am (arrive at 9:45 for 9 am adorer); and
Friday, 2 pm. Partners are desired for the following Holy
Hours: Sunday, 9 and 10 am and 2 and 6 pm; Monday, 10 am;
Wednesday, 9 and 11 am and 3 and 11 pm; Thursday, 8, 10, 11
am; Friday, 11 am and the 1 pm Holy Hour on Tuesday and
Friday.
My thanks to Ewald Stief for this week's article!!! God bless
you, Ewald!
Please note: 2 pm adorers should contact me, Marie Lama,
at 248.655.0309 until we can find a new captain for that block of
Holy Hours. Ann Falcon, due to personal responsibilities, had to
step down from that role. Thank you, Ann, for serving. May God
bless you for your efforts!
THOU SHALT NOT STEAL! While I hope that the books in our
spiritual reading library, as well as the prayer cards in the pews,
touch souls, those materials are there for all visitors to the
adoration chapel. Many books have been taken. A whole
basket of books for children that were there for when children
come to the chapel was taken. It had even been labeled
saying, "Do not remove from chapel". Please do not remove
books from the chapel. If you want a copy, I'll be glad to direct
you to a source. Many generous people have donated items to
be taken free of charge. They are in our "freebie/evangelization"
basket next to the intention binder. Help yourself to those items
(books, statues, pictures, are often there), but do not remove
items which are there for everyone's benefit.
Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us!

Missing Shrine Heralds from
our Archives The National Shrine archives contain all
the Shrine Heralds ever published since
November 9, 1935 and they are bound in
yearly books. We recently noticed that
we are now missing two years of these
publications. They are the years of 1957
and 1982.
The 1957 book has been missing for a
number of years, but the 1982 book has
been missing for only about 1 to 2 years. If
anyone knows the whereabouts of these
books, please contact Jack Hoolehan at

Grades 7/8 Religious Formation
We are in the process of ordering our new seventh
and eighth grade Religious Formation books for 2011-2012.
Students will be using a handbook from St. Mary‘s Press
and will keep the same comprehensive book for both the
seventh grade and eighth grade years. Additionally,
eighth grade students will supplement the handbook with
a wonderful Confirmation preparation book, also from St.
Mary‘s Press. The resources available to students and
parents through the publisher should really enhance our
formation program and provide families with additional
ways to really grow in their faith. More information to
follow over the next few months regarding this exciting
change to our program. Meanwhile, continue to explore
your faith and take some time to focus on praying
together as a family, especially the Rosary, as the school
year comes to an end and summer fun begins. Have a
great week and may God continue to bless your family. - Michael Reece

Archbishop Vigneron to priests, faithful: Concerns over
ACC conference, liturgy
Local and religious news outlets may have coverage this Pentecost weekend regarding
an organization called the American Catholic Council (ACC) and its three-day conference
at Cobo Hall. Last fall, Archbishop Vigneron cautioned any Catholic against participating in
this national gathering. The conference was not being conducted under the auspices of the
Detroit archdiocese or any entity of organization affiliated with the archdiocese or the
universal Roman Catholic Church. The archbishop expressed his serious concerns over the
ACC‘s distortion of Church teachings and issues, and most notably the group‘s expressed
opposition to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. At that time, he asked the organizers to cancel
the conference. They declined to respond.
As the event approached, the ACC refused to request and failed to receive – as required under Church
law – permission from the archbishop to conduct what it called a ―Eucharistic Liturgy.‖ To confirm the
legitimacy of what they had planned, the ACC was asked to provide details regarding this liturgy. The
response received was ambiguous, and there were good reasons for believing forbidden concelebration will
take place by the laity and with those not in full communion with the Church. In light of this, Archbishop
Vigneron recently warned clergy and the lay faithful against participating in both the conference and the
liturgy.
Additional information about the matter is available online at www.AODonline.org/ACC.

Exciting New Adventure
We are planning a Mission Trip to Nicaragua in March 2012. Planning and information sessions began in
April 2011. As a result 22 juniors and seniors applied to join the team. However, we can only accommodate
12 students and three staff so the selection process was thoughtful and difficult since all of the applicants
would have been good choices. At this time we would like to announce the members of the 2012 Nicaragua
Mission Team. Congratulations to the following:

Roamin’ with Rosie
When last we left Roamin‘ with Rosie, Kodi, Carlito and the cousin dogs were looking
for Rosie. Following a series of notes, they have found themselves at the bottom of a
stairwell that says, “Do not enter.” Carlito thinks they should go up the stairs. The dogs
aren’t too sure.
Carlito: Okay, hound dogs! Let‘s go up the stairs.
Bella: I don‘t feel too good about this.
Howie: Neither do I. Maybe we should go back and eat lunch?
Charlie: Does anyone know where we‘re at?
Kodi: If that other room was the mailroom, then I think we might be under the tower. I wonder if the stairs lead
into the tower. Father Coughlin used to broadcast from up there. I think I heard Monsignor once say there
used to be an apartment up there as well. Mail would be lifted up into the tower on some type of elevator.
Carlito: (irritated) Thanks for the history lesson! Now let‘s go!
Kodi: No wait. Monsignor is always telling me to follow the rules. If I don‘t, he might not take me for a walk.
Charlie: Yeah, maybe we should get a human to help us?
Howie: Good, let‘s go have some lunch!
Bella: Sounds good to me.
Carlito: What are you scaredy cats?
Kodi: Nope! Just wanting to do the right thing (turns around). Come on guys, let‘s get an adult.
The other dogs start to turn around. They start walking back down the dark hallway. They turn the corner.
Bella: Oh!
The dogs see a dark figure standing there in the hallway.
Figure: What‘s going on here?
What will our animal friends do? Who is the figure? Are they in danger? And what is so important about
Hamtramck, anyway? Find out the answers to these questions when we return for our third season next Fall.
Comments and suggestions? Please send them to [email protected]. Have a blessed summer!

June 2011
General Intention: That
priests, united to the Heart of
Christ, may always be true
witnesses of the caring and
merciful love of God. Missionary Intention: That the
Holy Spirit may bring forth
from our communit ies
numerous missionary vocations, willing to
fully consecrate themselves to spreading
the Kingdom of God.
Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions
Vocations
Come, Holy Spirit, with your seven–fold
gifts. Inspire, enlighten,
energize, and encourage
me to be a witness for the
Gospel (1 Corinthians 12: 3–
7, 12–13). If you think God is calling you to
be a priest, call Fr. Tim Birney, Director of
Priestly Vocations, at 313.237.5875 or visit
www.detroitpriest.com.
A Family Perspective
Like the disciples in today‘s Gospel,
there are times when we
shut the doors of our hearts
to people or events. It‘s
how we create emotional
distance. Permanent distancing is lethal
and prevents the peace Jesus offers you
today. - Bud Ozar
