THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Aug. 23, 2020 St. Therese Chinese Catholic School starting a new school year on Monday, August 24, 2020. We are so excited to welcome all of our students back for the 20-21 school year. Whether the student is an in-person or remote learner, St. Therese School is committed to continuing our rigorous award-winning curriculum. Our teachers and staff members are busy getting our campuses ready to safely welcome back our students. In-person learning (5 days per week) starts on Monday, August 24. Our classrooms have been reconfigured to ensure students are safely socially distanced throughout the school day. Our school is cleaned and disinfected throughout the day as well as other health safety practices per CDC recom- mendations and other health authorities. Students enter and leave school by homeroom or cohort group using a staggered schedule. Doing so reduces the chances and limits the time students would be physically near other stu- dents or staff who are not part of their homeroom or cohort group. Students remain in their homerooms to reduce the number of people who are physi- cally near students throughout the day. For example, teachers who are not homeroom teachers will teach students in their homeroom/cohort. These and other procedures protect students and staff by minimizing any potential health risks. Remote learning starts on Tuesday, September 8 and is led by our St. Therese teachers and follows our curriculum. K-8 students enrolled in our remote learning option have a wealth of educational resources, including a school-issued electronic device. Students are provided with recorded les- sons and educational materials that follow our rigorous award-winning cur- riculum. These resources can be quite valuable because students can re- play recorded lessons to catch things they might have missed earlier. Stu- dents also interact with teachers, staff, and other students in a live format so student’s individual needs can be better met. Our remote learning option provides great opportunities for students to learn and is an excellent choice for many families. St. Therese Chinese Catholic School is still registering students in all grades for the 20-21school year. We are offering five days of in-person learning or remote learning. For more information or to schedule a school tour, please email [email protected].

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS Congratulations to Wendy Flores who celebrated her Quince Anos 15th birthday at St. Therese Church last Sat-urday. May she continue to grow in maturity with her faith and relationships. Congratulations to the St. Rocco Society who celebrated their centennial at St. Therese Church this past Sun-day. It was a beautiful celebration honoring St. Rocco. Thanks to the organizers and all who attended this mo-mentous occasion. Our parish starts a “Carry on the Mission” appeal this week. You should have received a letter in the mail by now; if not, watch out for the letter. Thanks to all who helped with this mailing: Elizabeth and Sam Andri-acchi, Cheloie, Nicole Yong, Jing Zhang, Darlene Chan, Linda Leung, Gertrude Chan, Marilyn Leung, Che-loie, Dolores Becatti and all Finance Council members. Thank YOU for your generosity in advance.

We had a wonderful weekend with our annual St. Rocco feast. In the next four weekends, we will be celebrat-ing Confirmation, First Communion, and the Feasts of St. Mother Teresa and of Santa Maria Incoronata. Though small in size and dealing with a global pandemic, our parish has a lot of hopeful and life-giving cele-brations. In the last few weeks, you have had the chance to receive a faith story every week and this week's is about our devotion to St. Mother Teresa, our parish's patroness. It is hard to believe that it was just one year ago when Bishop John Manz and the Missionaries of Charity helped us inaugurate our new parish. What a joy! This year we will start a Novena to St. Mother Teresa on Thursday, Aug. 27th, during our daily mass. On the feast day, Sat. Sept. 5th, we will have an 8am mass at St. Barbara Church and 5pm mass with Bishop Robert Casey at St. Therese Church. We have started to plan for the celebration. Of course, we want your involvement and participation. So if your family can help us out with the celebration, please contact Tom Howard directly at [email protected] by Wednesday, Au-gust 26th, Due to Covid-19, space in Church will be limited, but the mass will be live-streamed at our parish's Youtube channel.

The world-wide devotion to St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta simply amazes me. For instance, just a couple of weeks ago, a strong Catholic, Hispanic woman named Amavelia Garcia agreed to make these beautiful face masks for our celebration. St. Mother Teresa cared for society’s most vulnerable. She founded many hospitals, all over the world. In this spirit, I encourage all of you to wear a mask, which is an effective way for us to protect each other and to show our care for each other now. If you are interested in one of these custom-made masks, they will be available at the feast day mass for a free-will donation. All proceeds will go to support the missions of the Missionaries of the Charity. Peace Fr. Li

Our Parish’s Live-Streamed 10:30 am Sunday Mass: Catholics are still absolved from Sunday obliga-tions. Those who can’t yet participate in person can still join us online; our 10:30 am Sunday mass is live-streamed via Facebook and Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzAgZ6h3s85o_fB3QSYO2VQ) Remember to "like" our new SMTC Facebook page to receive the latest news about the parish: https://www.facebook.com/StMotherTeresaParish/ Reminder: If you are considered as par t of the “vulnerable population;” if you have pre-existing health conditions; or if you are experiencing any health issues, out of super abundant caution and pure love for your-self and others, we strongly encourage you not to join our mass in-person for now and we kindly invite you to join our online masses.

CONTINUING GROWTH

by Sister Caritas As I reflect on my enthusiasm for the Chicago Cubs, I realize as I have often said, “It’s a family affair.” My mother’s father, my grandfather, was a Cubs fan. They lived in Wisconsin and he listened on the radio. My Mom was close to her father and became a fan. As I grew up, my father, who was a Cubs fan, took me when he and my Mom went to the game. We always listened on the radio. When we were older, my brother Ron and I went to games when they had free Ladies’ Day games. I got in free and he only paid half price. We would get player autographs, try to talk to players, watch batting practice, and watch the whole game and then we would walk home ̶ sad if they lost, but happy to be at a game. When I entered in Milwaukee, peo-ple said I would be a Braves fan as they were playing in Milwaukee. I assured them I would be brave but a Cubs fan. I was a Cubs fan no matter what. By the way, my grandmother was a White Sox fan. Some in my family justify their loyalty to the Sox with this fact. In the Gospel, Jesus asks a simple question, “Who do people say that I am?” The disciples give Jesus an-swers. Jesus then asks them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter responds, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus tells Peter two important things. First, Jesus’ heavenly Father has revealed this to him and, secondly, Jesus tells him he will be the rock upon which the Church will be built and he will have the keys to heaven and the power to bind and loose. Peter deeply believes this revelation. He spends his life telling that truth to others and so completely believes this that he gives his life for the kingdom. As we grow and develop as a human being, we go from believing because our parents or someone we admire believes to searching and questioning what we have been told. Then, with the grace of God, we come to choose and embrace the truth for ourselves as Peter did. This is the faith journey. We make the faith choice ourselves and with deepening faith in God we take steps to truly and deeply believe. We embrace the truth, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Where are you in this journey? Pray for that deep faith that embraces this belief always and forever even to the point of death.

Please pray for the following students as they prepare to receive their
