Wisdom 7'.1-t! I Hebrews 4:r2-a3l Mark eo::.7-3o ot Lo:a7-27

While on maternity leave I learned some difficult lessons, including how tohandle explosive diapers and how to convince a bright-eyed baby that 3 am

isn't really "morning."But my toughest lesson was discovering that my to-do lists were no longer

impor"cant. As someone who thrives on crossing things off the list, I was

shocked to realize I could only get one or two things done each day while

feeding, soothing, and diapering my daughter. lt took me months tounderstand that the to-do lists that had been central to my life had become a

distraction from my life's new center-my daughter and her unique coos, kicks

and, yes, cries. The lists weren't bad, but they did draw my focus from her.

Similarly, Jesus doesn't condemn the rich man's wealth in today's Gospel

reading. But his teaching that "it is easier for a camel to pass through [the] eye

of [a] needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God" reminds us

that wealth can become a distraction from recognizing our dependence on

God. The time needed to manage wealth and the security it appears to provide

can leave little room for God. Just like my to-do lists, such comforts that seem

so essential ultimately serve as distractions. We may not imagine ourselves aS wealthy even though we're richer than most

of the world if we have a roof and three daily meals. But how does our "stuff"-homes, bank accounts, clothes, shoes-distract uS from God? We spend a lot oftime shopping, making home improvements, and moving money to more

lucrative accounts. Do we give that much time to our relationship with God?

Maybe we too have some hard lessons to learn about what is central to our

lives-and what is mere distraction. Janel Esker I [email protected]

SPECI.A.L COLLECTIONS

(Last week) Mahalo to all for their generous contributions to the work that theSisters began in Hawaii (Catholic Charities Hawaii).

Our next special collection will be next weekend for the World Missions:"This year the celebration of World Mission Day has a very special meaning. The 5othanniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council and of the opening of the

Year of Faith and of the Synod of Bishops on the theme of the New Evangelization

contribute to reaffirming the Church's desire to engage with greater courage and zealinthe'missio ad gentes' so that the Gospel may reach the very ends of the earth."

Pope Benedict XVI

YE^I\}{ OF FITITF{

This weekend begins the Year of Faith. Mahalo to all who participated in Tuesdaynight's Mass where we were all encouraged to be witnesses to Jesus and to be

lights for the gospel. Look for sample materials at the entrance of the church or on

Sunday after Mass. Pray about ways to increase our faith.

LIVING IN LOVE-RETFi.EAT November 3-4,2412Often we say that we want to live our lives as iesus would want us to. Sometimes we

hear about Pope John Paul ll's Theology of the Body and wonder how to incorporatehis divine plan for couples into our everyday lives. Some days we feel like we want toIove our spouse and make him or her feel loved and special. But it can be such amystery to know and be able to actually make this real for us with our busy lives. ALiving in Love Weekend will be presented by the best-selling authors of Passionate

Parent Passionate Couple, Ed and Betty Coda, here at St Stephen Church on

November 3-4. After they experienced this mini-retreat, they lear.ned ways to solve

this mystery for their own marriage and now they want to share this good news withothers. Please join them. See the website www.livinginlove.org for more informationand to register. Or call 839-o837.

dc ar PAD Rf,

My son wants to study math at our local non-Catholic

uniuersity, but the uniuersity hospital performs abortions and

participates in embryonic stem-cell research. Can he study there?

Michael

Dear Michael,Your son's enrollment doesn't automatically indicate his

endorsement of the hospital's practices. The same applies toCatholics studying medicine there.According to a recent Georgetown lJniversiry report, 77.7

million Americans are Catholic (CARA, 2011). That numberincludes Catholic college students who study at non-Catholicinstitutions because of their academic excellence, Iocation, scholarships, and tuition. In his 1990 apostolic constitution On Catholic l-Jniversities(Ex Corde Ecclesiae), Pope John Paul II acknowledged thevalidity of a pluralism within Catholic universities; pluralismalso exists within non-Catholic institutions. On campus oroff, the Church's-and therefore Catholics'-primarymission "is to preach the Gospel in such a way that a

relationship between faith and life is established in each

individual and in the socio-cultural context in whichindividuals live and act and communicate with one another."This becomes a matter of "affecting and, as it were, upsetting, through the power of the Gospel, humanity's criteria ofjudgment, determiningvalues...and models of life, which are

in contrast with the Word of God and the plan ofsalvation" (Part 1, 48).In other words, Catholics do not exist in communities closed

in on themselves-they are catalysts enlightened by Christ inthe world at large.
