Northwood residents are fed up with a lack of communication around potentially contaminated soil.

An investigation carried out by Environment Canterbury looked at where there may have been the need to excavate, disturb or remove contaminants from residential sites.

After residents became con-cerned about the matter, the Northwood Residents Associa-tion presented a report asking for clarification to the Shirley-Papanui

Mr Smith said the issue had caused so much worry and anxiety for residents some had even re-ferred to lawyers for advice.

TOP TAPPER: Burnside High School student Josh Wadley, has placed second in the 2014 National Young Performer Awards. The competition, as part of Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand Incorporated, was held in Palmerston North on October 17 to 19. Out of 50 competitors in the tap section, the 16-year-old placed second. Josh received a $3000 scholarship which will be used to aid further tuition. The competitions are held every year, with the tap category held bienni-ally.

“This is something we are re-ally concerned about. For one, there is no burden of proof and two, from our perspective, there is no reason we should prove there isn’t,” said Mr Smith.

Homes in Northwood in-clude the area that was once an Apple Fields orchard.

The association believed the chance of actual contamination of properties in the subdivi-sion was low as topsoil was removed during development.

Last week the Nor’West News asked ECan why it had not made contact with the resi-dents association.

Programme manager Don Chittock said they have since apologised directly, and had agreed to meet with the asso-ciation by the end of the year.

“Because this past land use has been identified, this does not mean land is contaminat-ed, it is purely a record of past land use,” said Mr Chittock.

“This means we have con-firmed that a past land use included on the Hazardous Activities and Industries List has occurred but the soil has not been tested, and ECan does not have any investigation reports relating to Northwood properties,” he said.

You can check if your home is on the register through http://www.llur.ecan.govt.nz/.

Perspiration saturates my skin as realisation dawns - I was facing a killer puffer fish…

&McMaster HeapVeterinary practice

Another early morning, YET AGAIN!!! I remember today we were going snorkeling (for the second time) but this time with a different company. It is another warm day, too warm a day in Aussie. As the tribe of “Heaps” stroll down the marina, we inevitably got lost. Then Connor my older brother, a man of many words, said “stick with the herd of tourists”. His words of wisdom saved us from our first peril. 1st peril: Getting lost at marina. 2nd peril: Mum seasick (NOT!! A pretty sight). 3rd peril: Putting on the wet suit (dad insisted “it will keep you warm”.... NOT) 4th peril: Finding the right fitting mask for your face, snorkel and flippers.

As you can see, there are a lot of perils but to stop you from wasting half your day reading the list I’ll go on. Anyway by then we were almost ready to hop into the warm, clear, colourful waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I will list some animals in the reef and some will have a caution or dangerous note but keep in mind the chances of seeing them are slim. I did my research and I named my favourite 12 sea animals.

1 Humpback Whale 2 Green Turtle 3 Loggerhead Turtle 4 Olive Sea Snake - CAUTION 5 Whitetip Reef Shark 6 Blacktip Reef Shark 7 Reef Manta Ray 8 Red Firefish - CAUTION 9 Clown Fish 10 Humphead Maroi Wrasse 11 Blackspotted Puffer - CAUTION 12 Textile Coneshell - DANGEROUS

Non-important note/fact (opinionated note/fact) You will notice that I did not put caution on the sharks. Did you know they kill ten humans each year. We kill about 100 million of them yearly. They are very important at the top of the food chain. Remove these from the food chain and the Cortex Squid will step up and kill everything.

Any way, I’m getting off topic. We sailed on Poseidon, a snorkeling company boat. We had three snorkeling stops on the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkeling is actually easy as long as your mask fits snugly and doesn’t fill with water. The sea is so warm, the corals brilliant colours and there are hundreds of different fish to spot. Even mum who is a nervous swimmer just loved what she saw under the ocean. The second stop was the best as dad, Connor and I saw a Whitetip Reef Shark just cruising on the bottom. Mum fled the scene terrified.

Connor took lots of underwater photos until his hand cramped up and mum took over. I saw a Blackspotted Puffer Fish too.

The ship packed a lot of crew on for safety reasons including a marine biologist, who shared a lot of enjoyable information. Some facts to share are -

• 1% of the worlds ocean are “reefs” but they contain 25% of the worlds sealife • 0.02% of the worlds ocean is a marine reserve • There are soft and hard corals • The colour of corals is due to refraction of light rays

• Clown Anemonefish are all born male and will only change to be a dominant female. They clean the sea anemone by eating parasites, algae and zooplankton and the anemone offers protection from predators.

I spent hours in the water and was exhausted at the end of the afternoon. I went on a tour with the marine biologist at the last stop and she swam all over showing us all sorts of things including sea cucumbers, starfish and bump head parrot fish. We got a huge lunch on board the Poseidon and luckily mum wasn’t sick on the homebound trip.

It sure was a day to remember.

Residents concerned about a roundabout outside St Albans School may finally be able to look forward to action.

The school had urged for imme-diate action regarding safety at the roundabout and crossing area at the intersection of Westminster St, Courtenay St and Roosevelt Ave.

After a deputation from Christ-church Central candidate Tony Milne last month, the Shirley-Papanui Community Board requested the issue be moved forward.

A report will be included in the next city council meeting on December 3, to discuss the next steps for the roundabout.

St Albans School principal Gin-nie Warren stressed the danger of the intersection and said the school had concerns about the roundabout for quite some time.

Mrs Warren said she supported looking very quickly at a solution.

“Just little things, like just above the creek at the white bridge area, you have to actually edge into the roundabout to get a better view. There are things which could be done immediately,” she said.

Mrs Warren was also worried if the Northern Arterial Extension was to go ahead it could increase traffic flow through the area.

“As it is the school pays an excess of $4000 a year for traffic safety wardens.

One stands at the corner of Cranford and Westminster Sts because of some of the drivers’ behaviours. We are committed to being safe but we can’t afford to

put another person in the area,” she said.

City council staff would now look at designs that had been previously prepared for the roundabout renewal prior to the earthquakes.

Staff have been asked to look

at what had been prepared, and decide on what the best new path to take would be.

The roundabout was on the city council’s to-do list before the earthquakes, but with many other new issues it had become less of a high priority.

Food resilience expoThe Food Resilience Network is hosting a Food Resilience Expo this Saturday between 10.00am and 4.00pm at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens Information Centre to launch a newly-created umbrella brand called “Edible Canterbury”. City councillors and the community have been invited to attend the event, which will be officially launched by deputy mayor Vicki Buck at 2.30pm. The event would support wider food resilience activities in Canterbury such as community gardens, food forests, school gardens, market gardens, farmers’ markets, food co-ops and home growing.

Bowling club grantThe Fendalton-Waimairi Com-munity Board has granted the Fendalton Bowling Club $4495 for the turfing of the green margins. The grant would allow the club to prepare for the World Bowls Event next month. The club would be hosting several of the tournaments in the championship.

Northwood Fair The annual Northwood Fair this Sunday is set to be bigger than ever. Organisers of the fair are looking to break last year’s record of more than 100 stalls. The fair is in association with the city council’s Neighbour-hood Week. Belfast School will be fundraising for its new playground. Craft stalls, bumper boats, model traction engine rides and pony rides would all be at the event. For more information phone Clive Smith on 323 7527 or email [email protected]

So Chris, tell me a bit about yourself, are you Christchurch born and bred?

No I’m not actually. I’m an immigrant – I’m from South Africa.

When did you move to New Zealand?

I arrived with my family in 2002, and I was a policeman in South Africa before I came over to do my teacher training in New Zealand.

Have you always lived in the same area here?

I’ve always lived in South-bridge; the rural community has been really good to us. Our daughter was nine at the time we moved here, and we didn’t want to stop her education. So we enrolled her in school two to three days in, and then ended up staying – 12 years on we’re still in Southbridge. But it is time now to make a shift into Red-wood.

So from a policeman to a teacher, why the shift in roles?

I know it sounds unusual for a policeman to teach, but I was

a dog instructor in the force so had always been a teacher in some way. I have a passion for teaching and learning and mak-ing a difference for kids.

How did it happen?I’ve always wanted to be a

part of education. There was an opportunity I saw on an advert, I think, on a TeachNZ site, and so met up with Dr Jo Fletcher and had an interview, and they said come on board. I’ve always had a love for education.

You teach at Tai Tapu School, how long have you been there?

This is my eighth year at Tai Tapu. I started in 2007 and will keep going up until end of this year.

How have you enjoyed your time there?

I’ve loved it. It’s been a great school, a great community.

I’ve been fortunate enough to coach the girls’ cricket side, and we’re back to Palmerston North for the third year for nationals – last week we won the South Island championships. I’m very sporty so I love that it’s a sporty community out here.

So, did you study at the university here?

I took up my studies here

in 2006 at the College of Education and got my teaching degree. I’m actually back doing my postgraduate education studies at the moment. It’s a one-year postgraduate course. I’ll finish at the end of this year, and then I have another two papers to go. So I’ll carry on studying while I’m at Red-wood.

Studying and working full-time, sounds busy.

Chris Els will be taking a big step to become deputy principal of Redwood Primary School next year. Reporter Grace Cabell speaks to him about working as a policeman in South Africa, the challenges in his career so far and what he is looking forward to most about his new role.

a new communityIt is going to be busy but I enjoy

it. The way this course has been run it has great networking, a lot of educators and principals are working collaboratively. We want kids these days to work collabora-tively so it’s great we have educa-tors working and sharing research as well.

I like keeping the old brain ticking over.

So what prompted your decision to move into deputy principal at Redwood?

I just felt like it was time for me, I’m doing the leadership pa-pers and training at the moment, and Andrew Barker, the principal at Tai Tapu had been chatting to me about my next steps. I just felt it was the right time for me to put my hand up to take on a bigger leadership role.

How do you feel about leav-ing?

I don’t even know . . . it is quite hard because I’m excited, but at the same time I’ve done my bit at Tai Tapu. I feel like I changed the culture quite a bit and have left it in a good place. But no one is ir-replaceable so someone new will come in with new ideas.

It is quite sad – a lot of commu-nity people have come up to me in the last few days saying they’ll miss me, but I do think it’s time to move on.

What are you looking forward to the most?

I suppose coming to a new

community and a new school, looking at and seeing the culture of Redwood and trying to make a difference there.

It’s a bit of a step up – are you looking forward to the chal-lenge?

I am – I’m excited for the chal-lenge – I’m actually meeting with the principal there early next month and I’ll have a better idea of what it will entail. I just really want to seek my teeth into some-thing new now.

What has been one of the big-gest challenges in your career so far?

Well I’m quite an easy go-ing guy so I get on well with everyone. But I suppose the earthquakes, and having to look after the community’s children

through that. Although I’d been a policeman and you deal with crisis all the time, when you’re dealing with other people’s kids and keeping them safe – well that was quite a big challenge at the time. I’d never experienced an earthquake before.

What’s been one of your favourite moments as a teacher so far?

I think probably on the sports field – I’ve been really fortunate to coach a number of good sides. We’ve gone to nationals for cricket twice now, coached quite a bit of representative rugby as well and we’ve done really well on the field.

So you’re pretty involved with sports coaching Chris?

Yeah, I actually haven’t coached club sides for a while. I’ve

coached rugby at Southbridge and representative rugby, but at the moment I’m focused more on my son who is 17-years-old and goes to St Thomas of Canterbury College. He’s got his rowing and rugby.

We love our sports as a family and I’ve followed my son pretty closely for the last few years.

Can you tell me a bit about the rest of your family?

I have a daughter who is 21, Shani, she’s just done her post-graduate degree up in Wellington and is taking up a teaching posi-tion there this year. Then there’s my son, Adrian is year 12 going into year 13 at St Thomas, and my wife Elmarie, is the PA to the director at Discovery 1 School. So we’re all part of education.

Have you done much in the Redwood community before?

Not at all. I’ve basically always been Selwyn-based and involved in Selwyn schools so I’m quite new to Christchurch schools. And even that I’m looking forward to – working with new networks and clusters in the city.

What sports and hobbies are you involved with yourself?

Well there is coaching, and I love my golf and then basically just family time. I love spending time with my family. Because my daughter is in Wellington I love when I can get up there. And then I do a lot of reading. I love to open books for a good read.

Residents worried about an inter-section in St Albans are now one step closer to seeing action.

At a city council meeting last week, councillor Ali Jones present-ed a petition with more than 700 signatures gathered by residents, for the installation of right-turning arrows at the Cranford St and Innes Rd intersection.

The petition was spearheaded by Christchurch Central candidate Tony Milne.

The city council decided to refer the petition, along with a council report, to the infrastructure, trans-port and environment committee for consideration.

While doorknocking for his elec-torate campaign, Mr Milne found many residents did not feel safe when entering the intersection, and many had reported seeing or being involved with near crashes.

Earlier this month, Mr Milne presented the petition at a Shirley-Papanui Community Board meet-ing.

“A number of the commu-nity board members and the two councillors in discussion said they had identified the issue using the intersection themselves,” he said.

Members decided further action was needed.

A four-lane intersection had been proposed for the area, but was not likely to come into action until 2019.

BY MURRAY WILLIAMS, PAPANUI HERITAGE GROUP

By 1919, the ‘war to end all wars’ was over; the relief was balanced by a determination to commem-orate those who had been killed in what was seen as a worthwhile and heroic cause.

The immediate decision for local communities was to decide the form of such memorials; cost was obviously a factor given that the government had determined there would be no taxpayer sub-sidy and therefore local funding would be required.

In general terms there were two possibilities; symbolic structures such as cenotaphs, obelisks and statues or utilitar-ian expressions of remembrance usually taking the form of social infrastructure such as libraries and clock towers.

On the whole, World War 1 attracted memorials of the first type and local communities paid for these with fundraising and private donations.

Papanui, however, was to make a much more pragmatic decision.

In 1900, the town hall and library, located on the corner of Papanui Rd and Church St (now Bellvue Ave) had been destroyed by fire and never replaced.

Under the energetic leadership of local entrepreneur, Leonard B Hart, the memorial commit-tee convinced a public meeting in September 1919 that a new multi-purpose building would be a suitable memorial.

The estimated cost of the sec-tion on Horner’s corner (the top end of east side of Papanui Rd) and for the design and construc-tion of the new building was estimated at £7000, and it was thought to be too great a sum to

be raised by public donations and cake stalls.

The solution was probably unique in the context of World War 1 memorials in that a ratepayer poll approved of the Waimairi County Council rais-ing a loan to fund the project; the building was paid for by a compulsory levy on ratepayers.

The completion of the war memorial hall in 1923 was a testament to the persistence of Leonard Hart’s committee.

The result was a splendid and versatile community asset (it was to be used to show movies as well as housing a library and be-ing available for dances and of-ficial functions) although Mr G Witty, MP was a little optimistic in his prediction that the build-ing would stand for ‘all time’.

In fact, it was demolished 55 years later as a potential earth-quake risk.

Exceptional service and outstand-ing leadership skills have secured Bryndwr resident Chris Asher a spot as finalist in the Young Re-tailer of the Year category in this year’s Wares Awards.

Each year, the Wares Awards acknowledges the achievements of retailers in the appliance retail sector.

The 30-year-old is already the manager of Noel Leeming Ric-carton, and will now stand as one of three finalists up for the title at this year’s awards.

Mr Asher is the only Cantabri-an to be named as a finalist.

“Winning the award would be a fantastic achievement, to be recognised amongst a group of leading retailers in the industry,” said Mr Asher.

“Even being nominated as a finalist is a success, as there are a number of passionate retailers out there. Having the opportunity to

promote my core values to others means a lot.”

The winner of the Young Retail-er of the Year Award will not only receive industry-wide recognition for their achievement but also a travel grant to visit an interna-tional trade show of their choice.

This year, judges would be looking for a young retailer (un-der 35 years) who had achieved a high standard in their retailing career and could demonstrate outstanding performance.

Mr Asher said he looked for-ward to having the opportunity to talk about the future of retail.

The winner would be an-nounced at an awards ceremony on Thursday, November 13, at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland.

A GOOD READ: Last week pupils at Cotswold School were buzzing with excitement over the school’s book fair. More than 30 per cent of the profits from each sale were given to the school. Student librarians Laura Were and Kosei Oikawa, both aged 11, helped out at the fair.

Two year 13 students, Wil-liam Lu and Frances Camp-bell, have been selected to go to the Globe Theatre in 2015 to work with profes-sional Shakespearean actors and directors.

Next July, Frances and William, along with 22 other students from New Zealand will be immersed in Shakespeare’s world; attend-ing performances, going on tours and performing in London.

Both students were chosen from a group of 48 theatrical students that con-verged in Dunedin during the recent school holidays, to form the National Shake-speare Schools Production cast.

This cast was selected from the 550 students who performed in the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare National Festival held in Wellington during Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

The Rotary Club of Belfast-Kaiapoi has received a visit from the oldest rotary club in the United Kingdom.

Earlier this month, the club was visited by Rotary Club of Belfast (Northern Ireland) member, Bryan Johnston and wife Helen.

The two clubs met 10 years ago after the Northern Ireland club vis-ited the Belfast club, and they have been in contact ever since.

Mr Johnston presented the club with a banner and centenary pin, a personal letter from the Lord May-or of Belfast (Northern Ireland) and a Belfast medallion and tie.

Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon said she had always been aware of the close relationship between the two clubs.

“There are close links between this city and New Zealand. For me, knowing that where you live, bears the name of this great city, strengthens the links between us,” she said.

Mr Hardy also received a cente-nary booklet from the club, which composed of details from the Northern Ireland club.

The Belfast club was formed in 1911, on the same day as the Titanic was launched.

Mr Hardy reciprocated to the Northern Ireland club with two Belfast Rugby Club ties and a rotary banner.

Over the past four weeks shoe company The Athlete’s Foot has donated more than $17,000 to Christchurch schools.

Through the 2014 School Re-wards Programme, The Athlete’s Foot Northlands and Riccarton have presented 18 Christchurch schools with cash, vouchers and sporting equipment.

St Andrew’s College was one of the many recipients of the rewards programme this year, receiving almost $2000.

Donations were made to Burn-side High School, Cashmere High School, Casebrook Intermediate School, Christchurch Boys’ High School, Christchurch South Inter-mediate School, Christ’s College, Cobham Intermediate School, Darfield High School, Ellesmere

College, Heaton Intermediate School, Kirkwood Intermedi-ate School, Lincoln High School, Medbury School, Middleton Grange School, Papanui High School and Riccarton HighSchool.

Through the programme the shoe company had donated more than $25,000 throughout New Zealand.

Any pair of shoes purchased by students through The Athlete’s Foot rewards programme would earn them either a $15 voucher or $10 cash for the school.

School principals, teachers and students have commented how much they appreciated the support provided and how much they now rely on the donation made by The Athlete’s Foot.

Pupils at St Patrick’s School have been dipping their minds into wa-ter conservation-themed lessons.

The school invited Environment Canterbury’s youth engagement educator Jocelyn Papprill to speak to the pupils about waterways.

Themes were based around water use and how the pupils could play their part in keeping lakes and riv-ers clean.

Stream water was used to assess water quality by looking for micro-invertebrates.

Room 5 pupil Rachel McKenzie said she learned about “not drop-ping things down the drain as it goes into the river and then the fish can die.”

Daniel Milicich, also from Room 5, said he enjoyed the session and was going to talk to his parents about washing the car on the driveway.

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

I wasn’t able to write a Flame Files column last week.

I was several kilometres up a farm track on a hillside near Hurunui where an Ohoka farm-er lost his life in a controlled burn-off.

I mention this because it was another example of a lack of

knowledge on just how fast a fire can grow leaving the poor vic-tim overcome.

As a city firefighter I’ve seen this regularly over the years in the far too many fatal fires I’ve attended.

Many, in houses, would not have proved fatal with the simple installation of smoke alarms.

Without them, as in Hurunui, by the time the victims realised

they were in trouble, it was too late to escape.

Last weekend there was a spate of skips and rubbish bins deliberately lit in New Brighton.

If you have a commercial busi-ness in this area, or anywhere for that matter, for goodness sake please ensure skips are kept well away from buildings and wheelie bins are secured or locked away.

There are arsonists free and

living in our city. Don’t make it easy for them!

A call to Ariel Place in Aranui last Sunday was a bit like a blast from the past when a waterbed started to leak and the house oc-cupants could not contain it.

We had quite a few of these ‘back in the day’ but I haven’t see one for several years.

The house was left with hose in the bladder siphoning to the outside. All fixed!

More than half of us believe we’re above average when it comes to health but the country as a whole doesn’t fare too well,

according to new research by Sovereign.“Our latest research revealed 57 per cent of

Kiwis think that New Zealand, as a nation, is not very healthy, but 53 per cent believe they live a healthier lifestyle than the average New Zealander so it doesn’t apply to them,” says Sovereign chief medical o cer Dr John Mayhew.

“Interestingly, men rate themselves slightly higher than their female counterparts and 72 per cent of those in Marlborough and West Coast believe their health is above the averageNew Zealander.”

Sovereign’s research also delved into what we believe good health to be, including our understanding of what contributes to a healthy life.

“ ere are documented medical links between happiness and good health. Happier people live longer and experience less heart disease, colds, high blood pressure and other serious illnesses. At Sovereign, more than 30 per cent of our disability income claims are due to mental illness. People need to be more aware of the importance of their happiness and its contribution to our overall health,” says Dr Mayhew.

In another concerning statistic, a signi cant 66 per cent of people admitted to su ering from insomnia or broken sleep

“Supporting New Zealanders to live healthier lifestyles will not only make a di erence to each person individually, the lives of their families and communities, but to the country overall. Healthier people need less medical intervention. Healthier communities place fewer burdens on the public health system. Healthy people are happier people and have better wellbeing.”

over the last 12 months.“Not getting enough shut-eye on a regular

basis can have devastating e ects on your health, including weight gain, insulin resistance and an increased risk of accidents,” says Dr Mayhew.

Encouraged by the nding that 60 per cent of Kiwis believe they are focusing more on their health now than they did a year ago, Sovereign has launched a new campaign inspiring New Zealanders to take charge of their health and understand the four essentials of a healthy lifestyle: exercise, eating well, sleep and happiness.

Sovereign CEO Symon Brewis-Weston explains the ‘Life. Take charge’ campaign is not aimed at telling Kiwis how to be healthier, it is about giving them tools to do it.

“We have decided it’s time to break the insurance industry mould and begin a movement that encourages Kiwis to take control of their health proactively before they need our help xing them. Over the coming months, we’ll literally be giving New Zealanders tools that will help them have a

TRAVEL

Mystified by a thermal wonderlandLinda Hall explores Rotorua and is wowed by the strange and surreal sights

Rotorua is marketed as New Zealand’s coolest little hot spot and after my weekend there, I have to agree. I’ve been to Rotorua before but on this trip my partner Steve and I spent most of our time at Okere Falls, a small community about 21km out of Rotorua on SH33.

Before we arrived in Okere Falls on Friday afternoon, we went to Waimangu Volcanic Valley, 20 minutes’ south of Rotorua.

It was a lovely afternoon, not too hot with barely a breath of wind, as we set off on a selfguided walk through the geothermal park.

The woman at the reception gave us a “Wanderer Guide”, which included a step-by-step, numbered guide packed with information about the sights, birdlife and bush, as well as a timetable for buses for the return trip.

You couldn’t possibly get lost on this well-marked walk. The track is wide and the bush lush and green.

At the beginning of the walk we spotted a tui just metres away from us but it took flight before we had enough time to take a picture.

We were wondering what other birdlife we would see when sud-denly a wood pigeon exploded out of the trees above our heads, startling us and making us both laugh as it flew off. What a magnifi-cent start.

The valley is a protected scenic reserve and wildlife refuge.

As we rounded a bend we could feel the heat from Echo Crater and Frying Pan Lake. It looked surreal.

The sun was peeping out from behind the clouds as mistylooking steam rose from the lake. It really did look like a scene from Lord of the Rings.

I can’t possibly take you step

by step through this magnificent place; it’s something you have to experience for yourself.

I will tell you about the highlight of the walk for me — the Inferna Crater Lake is just unbelievable. It is aqua blue and, as I was staring in awe at it, I expected a mermaid to pop up in the middle of it — that’s how utterly unreal it looks.

We made it all the way to Lake Rotomahana just in time to watch the boat come in on its last cruise.

We thoroughly enjoyed the walk. It’s a perfect place to stop if you are travelling a long way with children.

They can let off some steam and no one will notice in this thermal valley.

Grahame Sydney is one of New Zealand’s major artists, famous for his quintessential and exquisitely rendered paintings of Central Otago and the South.

This book contains over 200 paintings from Sydney’s 40-year career, including all of his best-known landscapes, his figure paintings, and his highly distinctive paintings of buildings and their interiors. The book opens with a perceptive and finely turned account by the artist of his childhood in Dunedin and the beginnings of his obsession with art, and an essay from New Zealand’s Poet Laureate and man of letters, Vincent O’Sullivan, who writes insightfully and lyrically about Sydney’s work.

A landmark publication, this book captures magnificently the scale and significance of Grahame Sydney’s contribution to New Zealand art and culture.

New Zealand is a place of rare and challenging beauty and tramping here has developed a unique character and style, even its own language. In this fascinating, highly readable and superbly illustrated book, experienced trampers and backcountry authors Shaun Barnett and Chris Maclean tell, for the first time, how this essentially Kiwi recreation evolved in such a distinctive way.

Tramping – A New Zealand history tells the story of the development of this popular pastime from colonial days to the present. It describes how state-sponsored tracks and huts were developed for tourism in the late nineteenth century, followed by the formation of the first tramping clubs in the early twentieth century and the subsequent boom in tramping during the 1930s. Trampers’ battles to have national parks and wilderness areas established, changes to gear and technology, and the role women have played in tramping are included. The book will appeal to all trampers, and anyone with an interest in the outdoors and history.

Top athletes are often dogged by decaying teeth and gum disease, a performance-sapping problem in which sports drinks, high-carb diets and training regimes may play a part.

Experts from Britain and North America reviewed 39 published studies of the oral health of elite or professional sportsmen and women.

Decaying teeth affected 15-75 per cent of the athletes, moderate-to-severe gum disease up to 15 per cent and enamel erosion between 36 and 85 per cent.

The figures add to a survey carried out at the 2012 London Olympics, at which 46.5 per cent of athletes admit-ted they had not been to the dentist in the past year and 18 per cent said dental problems had affected their performance in the past.

“Oral health could be an easy win for athletes, as the oral condi-tions that can affect performance are all easily preventable,” says Ian Needleman, a professor at University College, London, who co-led the new study.

Dental problems cause pain and inflammation, affect sleeping and eating, and can hit sporting confi-dence too, he says.

“Simple strategies to prevent oral health problems can offer marginal performance gains that require little or no additional time or money.”

The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, says ath-letes face intense dietary and training pressures, all of which take a toll on

their teeth.Saliva helps to protect teeth from

erosion and decay, so dehydration during heavy exercise can increase the risk of oral ill-health.

Fast energy replenishment often means athletes use high-carbohy-drate diets or guzzle sugary, acidic energy drinks, which, without clean-ing, can boost the risk of tooth decay and damage enamel.

“We do not want to demonise energy drinks and are not saying that

athletes shouldn’t use them,” Needle-man says.

“However, people should be aware of the risks to oral health and can take simple measures to mitigate these. For example, water or hypo-tonic drinks are likely to be more suitable for simple dehydration, and spit, don’t rinse, after tooth brushing.

“For sports where athletes need a lot of energy drinks, high fluoride toothpastes and mouth rinses should be considered.”

Treating patients suffering from the deadliest form of skin cancer with a combi-nation of drugs may help extend their lives, research suggests.

Data presented at the Eu-ropean Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress in Madrid showed that treat-ing patients suffering from advanced melanoma with both cobimetinib and vemu-rafenib could prevent their disease from progressing further for up to 9.9 months.

That could help sufferers live longer, with those being treated with vemurafenib alone seeing their disease halted for 6.2 months.

The new treatment has been trialled on patients from 11 centres across the UK, including the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre in Glasgow and Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital.

Advanced melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer, with patients in most cases having a life ex-pectancy of less than a year.

Though vemurafenib

tablets can potentially reduce tumour size, taking the drug in combination with cobi-metinib can enhance anti-tumour activity in the body and delay patients becoming resistant to treatment, says drug company Roche.

“We are delighted to have been able to further explore the treatment options for patients with advanced mela-noma,” says Dr James Larkin, consultant medical oncolo-gist at The Royal Marsden in London and lead investigator for the trial.

“This data could represent a significant step forward in the treatment of this disease.

“The data shows that the combination of vemurafenib with cobimetinib prolongs progression-free survival significantly in comparison with vemurafenib alone.

Vemurafenib has been hailed as one of the biggest breakthrough treatments for malignant melanoma in the past 30 years and in just three years we have been able to make major strides in im-proving on its effectiveness as a treatment for patients.

MONEY

Buying a house is a lengthy, stressful process.

Just when you think it is all over, and before funds are released to your solici-tor, your lender will ask how you want to structure your mortgage.

You will probably have had little time to consider this and yet the structure of your mortgage can have significant implications.

Mortgages vary in terms of how repayments are made and how the interest rate is set.

There are three basic types:•Table mortgage – This is the most common type of mortgage, on which you repay both the principal and interest over a fixed period.

You can have a floating interest rate or fix your interest rate for a period of time, giving you certainty of

what your repayments are.Fixing can lead to penal-

ties if you repay your mort-gage earlier by increasing your repayments or paying lump sums.•Interest only mortgage– With this type of mort-gage, you pay back only the interest for a fixed period of time. This is useful if your mortgage repayments are very high, if you have a loss

of income, or if buying an investment property.•Line of credit, or revolv-ing credit – This type of loan works a bit like an overdraft. You are required to pay the interest owing on the balance of the loan each month. The interest rate is floating. You can reduce the amount of interest you pay by keeping your savings in your line of credit. You can divide your mortgage into two or three different amounts with a mixture of types of mortgage and with table mortgages fixed for different periods.

Your bank or mortgage broker can help advise you on the best structure, but don’t leave it until the last minute!

IT’STHEMIDDLE of Juneand 50 per cent of the yearis already almost behindus. Time flies when you are

having fun and, for many of us,that’s what this time of year isabout—with the ski seasonalmost here and others lookingfor winter escapes. It’s also a good time to look

ahead and plan for futuresuccess. Strategic planning isan essential component ofsuccessful business and I havetwo plans— one formyself andone for the business— both areintertwined.Formany of us, our

businesses are a reflection ofourselves, so it makes sensethat whenwe plan for ourbusiness(es), they reflect ourown goals and ambitions. So, what are you going to

achieve for the remainder ofthis year? What are yourtargets? Are you going to letlife happen or take astructured approach? It’s important that you set

goals for yourself and yourbusiness that energise, motivate, aremeasurable andattainable. However, you

shouldmake sure that you alsoset some stretch targets. My personal plan includes

revampingmy fitness and hasmany stretches . . . and stretchtargets! I have resolved toexercise at least three times aweek. I did start this columnwith the ‘‘time flies’’ statement, but it seems that in that fitnesstime, I can create an ability toslow time significantly or stopit entirely. So I am going to dust off the

previously unused stepmachine at home. And I will seta goal of ‘‘stepping’’ aparticular distance each day.Given that the garage isn’twarm, there is incentive to getmotivated. The stretch target is to

make this activity daily. OK,not much of a stretch, but rightnow I am about as fit as a BigMac is nutritious.

The key to stretch targets isthat they do just that; theystretch you to new levels ofperformance and, likemuscleswhen you exercise, you andyour business develop newstrengths as you achieve them.I know it won’t be easy—

particularly starting fromscratch— but I want to beexercising every day if I can. Sowhat do you dowhen thingsget toughwhen pursuing agoal? Instead of giving up, youget energised. And although itis a stretch, I believe it isattainable.Oncemy fitness returns, it

will be a goal achieved, and Iwill have developedmoreconfidence andwill feel bettertoo. It’s the same for goal setting

It is not uncommon for NewZealanders to have overseasinvestments.Examplesmight be shares in

foreign companies, foreign unittrust investments, foreignsuperannuation schemes andforeign life insurance policies. There are some pitfalls in leaving

these investments overseas. If your overseas investments

have a value greater than $50,000,they could well be liable for tax inNew Zealand. This is called aForeign Investment Fund (FIF) tax. There are a number of options youcan choose from as to to calculate itand youwill need help from anaccountant or financial adviser.Certain overseas investments,

particularly Australian ones, areexempt from FIF tax.Under current NZ law, an

overseas adviser who providesinvestment advice to a NZ residentmust be an Authorised FinancialAdviser (AFA) as determined in theFinancial Advisers Act.Australian advisersmay in some

circumstances be exempt from this

requirement. Exemptions also applyto wholesale investors, for examplethose whose investment assets are$1million ormore. If, for example, you have a share

portfolio of around £200,000 in theUK onwhich personalisedinvestment advice is provided by abroker, the broker will be in breachof the Financial Advisers Act if he orshe is not registered as an AFA inNZ. Youwill not have the protectionof the code of conduct, disclosurerequire-ments anddisputeresolutionschemesthat aremandatoryfor AFAs.Finally,

Careless translation BITES CHICKEN EXPORTER

By Jack May

Three points to ponder Clever writers can earn substantial fees.Translating English into other languages

has traps for the unwary.Proofreaders who understand two

languages are valuable people in exporting, document t ranslating and book publishing.

“We show all our writing students how to get their articles, stories, poems or instruction books published,” says Brian Morris, Principal at New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “They also get thoroughly proofread before being released.”

If interested in writing or proofreading work at home, phone 0800 801 994  and ask for the free report #805, “When You Have A Passion For Story Telling”. Whether your topic is food, electronics, cars, cooking, gardening, sport or business, there is satisfaction in getting your book written and published.

The Homestead is registered as a Category 2 historic place. From the registration details, Risingholme has architectural significance as a rare

example of the domestic work of architect Maxwell Bury. The only other registered dwellings known to have been designed (at least in part) by Bury are Chippenham Lodge in Christchurch (Category 2) and the Professorial Houses at Otago University.

Risingholme was built in 1864 by William and Mary Reeves, parents of politician

Celebrating 70 years AS A COMMUNITY CENTRE

This year marks the 70th year that Risingholme Community Centre has been operating as a community centre, and the 150th anniversary of the

Risingholme Homestead in Opawa.William Pember Reeves. After the death of William Reeves in 1891, the house had several further private owners until 1943, when it was purchased and presented to the City of Christchurch by J R McKenzie for the “health, amusement and instruction of the public”.

After a public meeting in St Mark’s schoolroom, Opawa, on February 24, 1944, the Risingholme Community Centre Incorporated Society was formed. Dr H E Hansen, the chairman of the committee who set up at this historic meeting, had been a leader in adult education for many years and under his guidance, the committee established its first activities: a nursery play centre, a room for the Plunket Society, drama, play reading and study/discussion groups.

Within six months, the first director W Ross Edwards, was appointed and by July 1945, an energetic programme was in place, including a Young People’s Club, woodwork classes and bridge and garden groups.

The temporary facility to serve the local community in Opawa.

The Homestead

The people who write advertising slogans are clever with words. They can make a simple frozen chicken hugely appealing.

A clever wordsmith named Ed McCabe was paid a substantial fee to write these 10 words, “It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken”.

This slogan for Perdue Chickens helped sell 15 million frozen chickens through American supermarkets in one year. Yes, the chickens were top quality meat.

But the Perdue export department got it wrong. They translated the slogan into Spanish as, “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate”.

Hispanic and Mexican cooks were not amused.

By 1946, the committee had decided to build a hall so that the centre could accommodate more activities and so began a succession of fairs, fetes and other fundraising activities that finally led to the construction of the hall/theatre and later the craft rooms at the back of the park.

Year 1947 saw both the completion of the hall and the arrival of Dorothy Crumpton as the new director, and these two factors led to an increased level of activity at Risingholme. Drama was a focus, two choirs were started, films were shown and classes which had begun under the auspices of both the Christchurch Technical College and the WEA expanded.

By 1954 the craft rooms were completed to accommodate the growing number of craft classes, such as woodwork and pottery - it was also, sadly, the year that Dorothy died after a period of declining health.

It was then that Jeanne Edgar became director and this began a long and stable period for the centre as Jeanne maintained and gradually built on the activities already in place until her retirement in 1983.

Jeanne Edgar was succeeded by Raewyn Cooke, who brought many positive changes to the way Risingholme operates. Through the energy and vision of Raewyn, the centre became independent in 2004. In April 2007, Raewyn Cooke was succeeded by Maryke Fordyce as director.

The community education programme

has continued to flourish, now working collaboratively with a number of schools and community groups. Risingholme is also host to a variety of independent community groups and activities.

As a result of the recent earthquakes in Canterbury, the Homestead and hall were damaged and is currently in the City Council’s Facilities Repair programme, with no known date for repairs to start. The centre is seen as a priority and funding was committed to repair the buildings by the Council, according to the Mayor’s news release on September 4.

The centre was also successful in acquiring a grant from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust to erect a temporary facility to serve the local community in Opawa. This lovely facility is now completed and already hosting a range of classes and will be officially opened on October 23.

Maintain your motorcycle and check it frequently

The South Island has some of the most stunning scenery in the world, and there’s no better way to see it than from a motorcycle. Simple day trips or week long tours become an amazing adventure along empty ribbon roads running beside beautiful coastline or through unspoiled natural bush.

When you are inspired to dust off your leathers and service your faithful, much-loved motorbike, there are some key safety tips to bear in mind, particularly as bikers are less visible than other vehicles and less protected. That means you have to do more than other road users to be safe on city and rural roads. For instance, it has been law for the past five years to ride with your lights on, and it is wise to always wear helmets and protective gear that are in good condition and are the best quality you can afford.

Whether you ride a Triumph, a BMW, a Harley Davidson, a Suzuki or a Honda, it’s vital that you maintain your motorcycle and check it frequently. Are the tyres in good condition and at the right pressure? Is the wear even or do you need to get your wheels balanced and aligned? Dangerous

blow outs can be caused by low pressure or cuts and scrapes. Check that wheels spin smoothly and don’t wobble, and that controls are smooth. Make sure there are no kinks or breaks in cables, and check your shock absorbers and fastenings.

Above all, check your brakes before you ride and if you are concerned, have the pads or linings checked by a professional.

Once you are on the road, remember other drivers may not always be as aware of motorcyclists as they should. Some tips for defensive riding are to look directly where you want to go, not at distractions. Also think ahead so that you keep well away from dangers - move lanes away from where other vehicles are indicating to turn, and always move slowly into corners but faster out.

excellent FOODINNOVATIVE CUISINEexcellent service

Stunning food coupled with a chance to shop makes a visit to Urban Corner Cafe simply irresistible.

The cafe now has an assortment of trendy trinkets and modern decor home wares on display that are well worth a browse. From chunky fashion jewellery through to contemporary iron wall art, there’s bound to be that perfect something for someone special.

“Our gift selection is similar to what you’ll find in specialist gift shops in the malls, but at a fraction of the price,” said Katrina Hargen, co-owner.

Since opening in March, North New Brighton’s The Bower / Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant complex has received rave reviews for it’s innovative modern cuisine and industrial chic design.

The interior is stunning, and really must be seen to be appreciated.

The left side of the structure houses The Bower... a lovely modern styled bar decked out with booth and leaner seating, a gaming room, and fabulous sun drenched sheltered outdoor area. The bar offers a wide range of regular entertainment including live music and live sports coverage.

To the right side of the structure is The Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant.

Urban Corner has a wide attraction. Opening from 9am it offers a great array of gourmet cabinet food available to eat in or takeaway and great espresso, as well as a la carte lunch and dinner menus. It’s decor is tastefully bright and breezy, and the dining area opens out to an al fresco dining deck that steps down to two safe and secure kiddies play area.

At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Paulo. Formerly of Michaels Restaurant, his cuisine reflects fine dining. Making the most of new season produce, Chef Paulo has just launched a fresh new menu that is modestly priced considering the high quality ingredients used and outstanding presentation of dishes.

Also launched is a separate $20 menu that is available daily in The Bower bar.

Constructed from shipping containers, a common response from new patrons is that the exterior does not do justice to the wealth of treasure within.
