A Merivale mother-of-three has taken on the task of raising more than $70,000 to build a community playground.

Charlotte Gray pledged to raise the money herself for playground equipment at Merivale Reserve, after she was told by city council staff that there were no funds available for it.

The Fendalton-Waimairi Com-munity Board approved the plans for the playground on Rugby St, but said they didn’t have the money to fund any of the equipment.

The community board approved plans for equipment in a second park in the ward last week, although they do not have funds for it.

The plan to install public fitness equipment in Burnside Park, which

is also expected to cost around $70,000, has been put forward for community consultation.

Community board chairwoman Val Carter said the city council pro-cess took a long time, so the board needed to plan in advance.

She believed that funding would be found for the project, but said it would need to be allocated in long-term budgets.

“We’re in a catch 22 situation, because you really do need to keep planning and moving or nothing will happen.”

She said the board might have been able to fund playground equip-ment at the Merivale Reserve, but it would probably have taken years.

Mrs Gray said parents in the area were “crying out” for a playground.

ANOTHER RESCUE AND REHOME

McMaster & Heap

&McMaster HeapVeterinary practice

Recently a young, white female mini lop rabbit was dropped off at the clinic, with a mangled right hind leg. She was so skinny and little weighing only 66 grams. She had been found up someone’s driveway obviously lost. She was friendly and despite her injuries, she was willing to eat and hop around.

In true McMaster & Heap style, we decided it would be in the rabbits’ best interests to hospitalise her and care for her until an owner came forward. We checked for a microchip. She was advertised with Pets on the Net and we contacted the SPCA. She appeared to be doing everyday things normally. We radiographed her sore hind leg and found she had a displaced proximal tibial fracture that wasn’t going to heal on its own. We attempted to splint the limb but quickly found out that splints slip off very quickly.

After a week, when no-one had contacted us, we decided we must make a difference for this rabbit. Our nurse Kim, was very keen to keep her and the only surgical option available to us was amputation. We researched up amputating a hindleg and in most cases rabbits do better than removing a foreleg. Young rabbits seem to rehabilitate better and weight management is critical for success. A fat rabbit won’t ambulate as easily. Some potential problems can be hyper-extension or arthritis of the carpal ( wrist) joints in the frontlegs, loss of support on one side leading to dermatitis and infection of the opposite hindleg pads and obesity. Amputation is a good, safe option for severe bone fractures or hip dislocations, bone or soft tissue cancers, infection of the bone, severed tendon or ligament injuries.

Our little bunny was prepared for her big day in theatre. The anaesthetic can often be more risky than the procedure itself. We use a combination of anaesthetic and pain relief drugs given into the muscle and then the rabbit wears a face mask during the surgery, breathing in oxygen and anaesthetic gases. Keeping rabbits warm and their body temperature up is critical and this patient was severely underweight, making it harder to retain body heat. We injected warmed fluids under her skin, she lay on a heat pad and had hotties all around her, plus she was wrapped in wool. I amputated her leg high up, proximal femur region, as if you leave a long stump, they develop ulcers or bang the stump against objects as they walk.

This wee rabbit was a real trouper throughout the surgery maintaining a good heart rate and blood pressure. She woke up quickly, eating within 30 minutes and moving around her cage amazingly. She is recuperating excellently with Kim at home and appears to have no difficulties moving around.

For us it is rewarding being able to save “any life” whether it’s a client’s pet, our own furry friends or a stray animal bought into us. None of us should ignore an animal needing help, comfort or treatment. That’s where our team of health professionals are outstanding as they are all compassionate, kind, dedicated and willing to go that extra mile. They are also keen to add to their ever growing animal families to save a life. Thanks Kim!!

The Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre is likely to be built on the former QE II site.

Burwood-Pegasus Community Board members and ward coun-cillors all said they would vote in support of the site next week.

The site will then be put to the city council on September 11, for final approval.

The QE II location was chosen as first preference by a Commu-nity Advisory Group appointed to look at the sites in detail.

Their second preference was Rawhiti Domain, while Burwood Park and New Brighton were ranked third equal.

The group included representa-tives from the community board and eight community and sports groups involved in the complex.

Group spokesman Robert Jugo-vac said the QE II site rated highly for its accessibility, likelihood to enable wide participation, impact on social well-being, and the area available which will allow the fa-cility to grow over time.

A geotechnical survey and re-port will need to be done on the site before the plans for the build-ing can be approved.

The site suffered bad lique-faction from the February 2011 earthquake and the QE II com-plex was eventually demolished.

But city councillor David East said the same thing would need to

be done for most sites in the east. The advisory group is still work-

ing on a report outlining what they would like to see included in the complex. That is likely to be released next month.

• From page 1“Getting to a playground

here is pretty much a half-day trip when you’ve got three kids. It’s a night-mare.”

She is in the process of setting up an incorpo-rated society with about 15 other parents in the area.

She said they hoped to raise the money within a year, through community fundraising, donations and grants from charitable trusts.

Once the funds are raised, the playground is expected to take about six weeks to build.

The fundraising group will meet for the first time on Tuesday next week, from 7.30pm at the No. 4 Bar and Restaurant in Merivale.

Mrs Gray said anyone interested in helping with the fundraising was welcome to attend the meeting.

The group can be reached through their Facebook page, Merivale Reserve Playground.

So tell me about your vision for the Food Resilience Network?

It’s to create a patchwork of food production across the city, and the greater Christchurch re-gion. We’re really wanting to see much more localised food pro-duction.

I know this isn’t the first of this type of initiative you’ve been involved in. When did you first get involved in com-munity gardens?

Well, in the late 1990s I be-came a co-ordinator of the Or-ganic Garden City Trust, which had similar aims but the format was quite different. We had a lot to do with establishing gardens in primary schools, and basi-cally promoting the concept of Christchurch as an organic gar-den city.

I think the difference now is there is so much more public awareness. Back then Christ-church had 10 community gar-dens, and now there are almost 30 – and that’s not because of anything I’ve done, it’s just an indication of how much aware-ness of these issues is growing.

There is a lot more excitement about it now, too. The idea of taking control of our food sys-tem and developing a really rich food culture has really captured people’s imaginations.

I think the experience of the earthquakes also brought back to people the importance of having food in your garden, be-cause if the fridge goes off or the supermarket runs out of food where are you going to turn?

Gardens are obviously a pas-sion for you – where did that passion come from?

I don’t know where it came from, actually.

I remember at university liv-ing in a flat with a huge garden, and I wasn’t even aware of it. I’m kind of ashamed of that now, because now my first question is always where is the garden?

I did an organic growing

course at CPIT and I remem-ber being amazed that my corn seeds grew, because I had this idea it would be really difficult to convince them to sprout.

I was really lucky when I was a student to meet Bob Crowder, who was a lecturer at Lincoln, and he became a key mentor for me. It was a mixture of his en-thusiasm and inspiration, and the quite deeply-seated ideas I already had about the silliness of our economic systems. I always thought it was crazy that a lot of people can’t eat healthy food because they can’t afford it, yet

food literally grows on trees.I met Bob while working at

the St Martins supermarket, which was the first supermar-ket to have an organic section. I didn’t realise the significance of it then, but the owner of that store was very influential in the GE Free movement, and later I got into that world and I really, really loved it.

I know you worked in super-markets for a long time, bal-ancing it with your work for community groups and local government – did those things work well together?

Matt Morris is the co-ordinator of the Food Resilience Network, a group responsible for developing edible community gardens across the city. He spoke to Gabrielle Stuart about gardens, monasteries, beer and his love for supermarkets.

It’s a funny thing, but I quite like supermarkets. I know I’m meant to say I hate supermar-kets and only shop at farmers markets.

Supermarkets are a fascinating environment. They’re like the centre of culture, like the An-cient Agora in Athens – it’s the modern marketplace.

As far as the local government stuff goes, I find it a fascinat-ing world as well. I was on the Shirley-Papanui Community Board for just one term, and I found the most rewarding thing for me was meeting such a lot of people who were working in charities and organisations on the ground, making the most amazing change in their com-munities.

Part of the reason I stopped was that I wanted to be more involved on the ground – but the main reason I stopped is that I got a full-time job at Canterbury Uni-versity working in sustainability, which was something I have al-ways been passionate about.

I’ve heard a rumour you’re about to finish the job at the university?

Yes, I’ve just resigned, so this is my last week working here. There’s a lot of work to do with the Food Resilience Network and that’s taking a lot of my time at the moment – we’ve got a cou-ple of big events coming up, in-cluding an expo at the Botanic Gardens.

I’m also in the process of start-ing my own business, called The Urban Monk, which is about bringing delicious foods to the people of Christchurch.

The Urban Monk is an inter-esting name. What inspired it?

I’ve been experimenting with new monasticism, which is a global movement about taking the best aspects of the monas-tery and bringing them into the world, so we don’t have to go and separate ourselves. I have spent some times in traditional monasteries as well and I really liked it, but decided that I need to remain active because there are some really important social issues that I would like to be in-volved in.

I’ve been involved in start-ing a monastery in South New Brighton, called the Monastery of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. It’s still very fledgling at the mo-ment, because we’re still working out the routine and the rule.

Essentially it’s an ordinary house – apart from being shaped like an octagon. Unfortunately, like many ordinary houses it has earthquake damage, so I’ll be out of it for four months pretty soon. I’ll be spending some time in Geraldine growing cabbages for sauerkraut, and also spending time with my parents, who are not very well.

So what is it like, to live in a modern monastery?

The point is to find peace and

equanimity for oneself, and to serve and help the world. So we do some of the traditional things – making candles, mak-ing bread, making champagne – all of those things and more. We have a weekly meeting for men who are interested in spiritual-ity, and it’s also like an education centre for sustainability.

I’ve been twice to Mt Athos in Greece, which is this great peninsula, very beautiful, dot-ted with about 20 monasteries. They’re all incredibly old and it’s a very peaceful, very earthy place. I loved it, but I still some-times need to go out for beer, and to stay in touch with the world.

Where did your interest in monasteries start?

Well, there is a photo of me as a kid at a medieval day, and everyone is there as princes and princesses and I’m dressed as a monk. When I was painting and printmaking I often used a monk motif. I don’t know where it came from, it’s just something in me.

For me it is the perfect anti-dote to the rampant consumer-ism of our culture. It’s about say-ing we don’t need all the junk we tend to collect, that just ends up in the landfill.

Years ago a friend showed me a picture, and told me about Mt Athos. He said monks were hauled up the side of cliffs in baskets, he said, “Matt, you’ve

got to go, you’d love it”, and he was right. I never got hauled up the side of a cliff in a fish-ing basket, but I did love being there.

So does being a modern monk mean you give up having a family?

No. New monasticism doesn’t mean no sex, and it doesn’t mean no family, or wandering around in robes. It’s more about finding a place of peace and integrity.

I have a partner, and we’re both involved in the movement.

Were you born and bred in Christchurch?

I was born in Invercargill, but we moved to Christchurch when I was one and I have lived here ever since.

Do you have a favourite place here?

I really like the area I grew up in, in St Martins, but I love being on the beach and I think New Brighton is a real gem – I think I may stay there for a while.

Looking forward, do you have any long-term goals you would still like to achieve?

At the moment I’m just fo-cused on putting one foot in front of another and seeing where it goes. There isn’t this end result I’d like to get to, be-cause I don’t really know where I’m headed.

Railway lines will never compete with the Botanic Gardens – but the Papanui Rotary Club has done its best to turn an area along the rail line from Normans Rd to Northcote Rd into almost pristine grassland.

Twenty-seven club members, family, friends and volunteers took part in the clean-up recently.

The group also included nine university students. They are part of the Rotary university leaders initiative and sacrificed a day of study to help out.

Health and safety was the most important component of the project. A risk management plan

was created, club spokesman Gary Denhard said.

“A full safety briefing was held by KiwiRail. Each clean-up team had a dedicated spotter to manage their work alongside the track,” he said.

“In the four years since the last clean-up, people who obviously don’t care about their community had deposited piles of rubbish including bags, paper, bottles, bike and car tyres and even damaged supermarket trolleys and chairs.

“Now the locals can take their daily walk in much more pleasant surroundings.” said Mr Denhard.

Royal Wolf New Zealand specialises in the hire or rental, sale and modification of new and refurbished shipping and storage containers. As the largest container provider in New Zealand, and with 26 branches throughout New Zealand and Australia, Royal Wolf is able to offer delivery from their customers’ local branch. This both

reduces the cost of transport and ensures fast and efficient service from the company’s professional and highly experienced team.

The key to the cost-effectiveness of a container is its portability and strength, even after considerable modifications have been made. Many Christchurch people are choosing containers as a flexible and reliable solution to their storage needs while their homes are being repaired or rebuilt, and Royal Wolf is meeting that demand.

Its storage park in Harewood also provides onsite secure storage facilities for all types of household goods, sports items and business equipment.

This secure and affordable option offers the convenience of the storage containers that are kept under a roof to provide further protection from the elements. Clients have 24 hour access to their goods at all times.

The company purchases large quantities of second-hand and new-build containers domestically and internationally, and therefore is able to supply them at very competitive prices.

The range comprises containers in many different sizes and types to meet customer needs, which can include general storage, portable buildings, refrigerated storage and hazardous goods storage.

Established in 1995, the company has 18 years’ experience in the industry and provides products and services to more than 20,000 customers across Australia and New Zealand every year. It is the supplier of choice for many leading companies and organisations including The Warehouse, New Zealand Van Lines and the New Zealand Defence Force, among others.

The 2014 ChrisTChurCh sanTa Parade

Sunday december 7th

Former Silver Fern Irene van Dyk paid a visit to Christchurch last week, in her new role as the Tall Poppy Real Estate ambas-sador.

First she visited Christchurch Netball Centre, where she spent two hours sign-ing autographs and talking to players and parents.

She then went to Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, where 27 young netballers from nine schools throughout Canterbury were waiting for a session covering advanced netball skills. The players ran through a range of drills and finished off with an inspirational talk from van Dyk.

Tall Poppy regional manager, Rob Graves, organised the day’s activities.

“At Tall Poppy Real Estate we are always looking to inspire young and enthusiastic players. We are so pleased to have Irene on board; she has an amazing ability to reach out to all players in the netball commu-nity,” he said.

This event was the first of several that are planned, where van Dyk will take the time to teach and motivate these up-and-coming New Zealand netballers.

Strowan mother-of-three Ali Harper is preparing to perform at a festival in New York.

She has been invited to per-form her solo show, Bombshells, at the United Solo Festival, and while there, will also perform at the New York Metropolitan Room and sing at a Broadway cast party at the Birdland Jazz Club.

But far from being nervous about the performances, she said she was dreading leav-ing her teenage daughter and young sons.

“I am dreading leaving the family, but that’s part of my job and it’s what I do. In that respect it’s similar to thousands of mums all around the country who have to work sometimes away from their families, but I guess this is a little different in so far as I am a “working mother on the road”, and next month, that’s 42nd Street in New York.”

She knows the Bombshells show well, having performed it across New Zealand since 2007.

She said there was a lot

people she could relate to in the show.

“The writing is wonderful and the characters are timeless. Women are complex and at the same time straightforward. Whether it’s in Christchurch or on 42nd Street there is much we all have in common and that ultimately is the beauty of Bombshells.”

She will perform the show

twice at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School in October, the week before she plans to leave for New York.

She will also hold a celebra-tion concert in September at The Court Theatre, showcasing some of the material from the Down Under Diva! cabaret show.

More information and tickets for both shows are available from The Court Theatre.

Ali returns for prestigious New York festival

PASSION: Performer Ali Harper singing in New York last year, where she will return to perform at the United Solo Festival this year.

The Burnside High School Envi-ronment Group has won an award for their work promoting sustain-ability.

The group was presented with a Youth Leadership for Sustain-ability group award last week by Environment Canterbury and Te Runanga o Ngāi Tahu.

The aim of the award is to cel-ebrate and encourage young peo-ple who are stepping up and mak-ing a difference.

The year 13 students meet weekly to develop ways of enhanc-ing their school environment and to encourage sustainable practices amongst students and staff.

“This year there were some re-ally inspiring submissions which made it very difficult to decide who should take away the award,” said ECan youth engagement ad-viser Jocelyn Papprill.

“There was an impressive range and depth of activities the young people were involved in and they showed themselves to be some of the strongest applicants we’ve ever had.

The 2014 winner of the Individ-ual Award was Elise Wilson from Cashmere High School.

She was chosen for her passion-ate commitment to socio-cultural sustainability, having organised or participated in numerous events including the We Speak Youth Fo-rum, the Canterbury Model Unit-ed Nations and Model European Union forums.

What makes them successful?• They have evolved over time and have responded to the

different demographic changes since 1877.• They are located in neighbourhoods; they cater for

families and respond to community needs.• They are staffed by highly trained teachers who know

curriculum levels from level 1 – 5 who have had the same teacher training as teachers in other year 7 and 8 school types.

• Teachers in the students current full primary school know about individual students learning progress and learning style from year 1 – 8.

• Developing the whole child, flexibility, nurture, innovation and child centered learning sum up full primary schools.

• Year 7 and 8 intermediate age students are the leaders and role models along with the adults in a full primary school.

• School organisation in a full primary school fits the needs of students not the timetable.

• All year 7 and 8 students are included in leadership opportunities, sporting opportunities, school community job opportunities, buddy responsibilities and role model expectations. They are seen by others in the school as the leaders and younger students to look up to them.

• These opportunities and strategies to build leadership, key competencies and resilience are available to all intermediate age children in a full primary.

Aroha ki te tangata, te tuahiwi ki te whai aoRespect: the foundation for future success

Parents of year 6 students are encouraged to take a good look at their child’s full primary school when choosing schooling for 2015. Why change schools when you don’t need to? Full Primary schools are tried and tested and have developed in innovative and cost effective ways since their inception in 1877. They are as important to the provision of education in 2015 as they were in 1877.

What does the research tell us about the learning needs of Year 7 and 8 students?• Curriculum that is relevant, challenging,

integrative, and exploratory• Multiple learning and teaching approaches• Assessment and evaluation programs that

promote quality learning• Organizational structures that support

meaningful relationships and learning• Educators who value working with the

age group • Courageous, collaborative leadership• School-wide efforts and policies that foster

health, wellness, and safety• Multifaceted guidance and support services• School-initiated family and community

partnerships

Looking at the above list it becomes clear that it isn’t school type or school architecture that makes the difference for intermediate age children. It is instead the learning and the attitude of professionals to this cohort of students. This can happen in any school setting as long as the leadership, teachers and non-teaching staff are committed. Full Primary Schools are providers of intermediate aged education in every way that other types of schools are.

And alsoThe research also provides insight into what works for intermediate age children: Ministry of Education by Dinham and Rowe of the Australian Council for Educational Research. 2007• From the broader ‘teaching and learning literature’,

there is strong evidence that the quality of teaching which students receive at all levels and stages of schooling is of major importance in influencing achievement outcomes for students.

• While productive and positive student-teacher relationships are identified as an important characteristic of highly performing schools catering for middle years students, it needs to be acknowledged that good teachers and school leaders at all levels of schooling is what works.

• It is therefore debateable whether at least some aspects of the philosophy and enactment of middle schooling is any different from ‘good’ teaching and effective schooling generally in all school types.

The literature is clear in advocating ‘middle schooling approaches focusing on quality teaching and enhanced learning’ rather than on school type. Therefore it is what happens in the classroom to support learning and what happens across the school to cater for the specific developmental, cognitive, physical, emotional and social needs of intermediate age children that makes the difference. Not school type. The research on middle schooling and its implications to provision of quality education to year 7 and 8 students is as applicable to full primary schools as it is for other intermediate schooling types.

FOOD

Pea, ham and sour cream fettuccineServes 4 Ingredients460g Fettuccine, or spaghetti360g Champagne ham, diced3½ cups Frozen peas, defrosted250g Sour cream, or creme fraiche½ Lemon, juicedDirectionsBring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Add pasta, stir and cook for 8-10minutes or until al dente.

Stir pasta a few times while cooking to prevent it sticking together.

Drain pasta, then add back to the pot along with the ham, peas, sour cream and lemon juice.

Toss everything together and warm through on low heat. Season to taste with a little salt (if needed) and freshly ground black pepper.

If splurging on the flat shopping budget, a few torn basil leaves on top is nice. Divide between serving bowls and eat while hot.

Quick Thai chicken curry for oneUsing a Thai green curry paste makes this a quick dish to cook – curry pastes are avail-able in sachets or bottles from supermar-kets and Asian grocery stores.

Ingredients2 tsp Rice bran oil1 Chicken breast, skinless, trimmed and sliced1 Small onion, sliced2 tsp Thai green curry paste2 Tbsp Water165g Coconut milk, or coconut cream1 to serve Lime, halved

DirectionsHeat a frying pan, add oil and pan-fry skin-less chicken breast, trimmed and sliced for 5 minutes to brown on both sides. Remove to one side.

Add sliced onion to the pan and stir-fry to lightly brown.

Add curry paste and gently fry for 1 min-

ute to release flavours.Add water and mix until smooth, then

stir in the coconut milk or cream. Return chicken to the pan and simmer

very gently (do not allow to boil) for 5 min-utes, stirring often.

Stir in fresh coriander and serve with lime wedges on the side to squeeze over.Chef ’s tipsThe curry should not need any salt and pepper as the curry paste is full of strong flavours.

Don’t allow the mixture to boil once the coconut milk has been added or the sauce may separate.

Speedy suppers

Fried bananas and caramel sauceServes 4 For those of you with a sweet tooth, this dessert is a must. Instead of deep-frying, you can simply roll the bananas in dark, rich muscovado sugar then fry in a little butter and serve with a warm caramel sauce.

Ingredients6 Tbsp Muscovado sugar2 Tbsp Butter150ml Cream4 Bananas, peeled and cut into four2 Tbsp Toasted sesame seeds4 scoops Vanilla ice cream, to serveDirectionsTo make a caramel sauce put 4 table-spoons of sugar in a small pot. Add butter and cream.

Bring to a simmer, stirring until butter has melted. Remove from heat.

Spread remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar on a small plate. Toss bananas in sugar.

Heat a frying pan and cook the bananas a few at a time until golden. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Place bananas on plates, top with a scoop of ice cream and drizzle caramel sauce over them.

Steak with whisky mushroom sauceServes 4 Ingredients4 Beef steaks, thick eye fillet or scotch fillet2 Tbsp Olive oil4 Spring onions, finely chopped300g Button mushrooms, finely sliced4 Tbsp Whisky, scotch1 cup Beef stock3 Tbsp Cream

DirectionsBring the steaks to room temperature well before cooking and sprinkle with a little salt and pepper.

Heat a heavy frying pan, then add the oil. Once it starts smoking, add the steaks and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove them to a plate and cover with foil.

Reduce the heat and add the onion, stir-ring to lift any meat residue off the bottom of the pan. Toss them around for a min-ute or two, then add the mushrooms and thyme.

Once the mushrooms soften, add the whisky. The alcohol may ignite and flare up, but it will quickly subside.

Add the stock and allow the sauce to bub-ble and thicken. Finally, stir in the cream, then return the steaks to the pan and cook for another minute.

Serve on heated plates, spooning sauce over each steak. Accompany with steamed baby carrots and snow peas and a few sprigs of chervil.

Anchovy & Capsicum ToastsServes 24

Ingredients3 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil1 to taste Garlic1 Bread stick⅓ cup Olive tapenade24 Anchovy fillets2 Red capsicums, Grilled and sliced into fine strips1 to garnish Basil leaf

DirectionsMix the oil and crushed garlic together. Toast the bread in the oven until golden and crusty, remove from the oven and brush with the garlic oil. Spread each slice of toast with tapenade. Place an anchovy fillet over each bread slice and criss-cross with the capsicum. Sprinkle with basil leaves.

Are you feeling in control of your patterns of behaviour, or are they controlling you?

It could be your eating habits - a whole packet of biscuits rather than just one, or binge snacking a er dinner. Many of us eat for emotional reasons, such as boredom, stress or habit, rather than actually being hungry.

Or have your sleep patterns spiralled out of control or gotten into a rut? Do you have di culty falling asleep at night, lying in bed for hours before nally dropping o ?

Are you smoking more but enjoying it less and don’t know why you do it? Perhaps you struggle to control your reactions to certain situations and stutter, blush or have a panic attack.

By using hypnotherapy to change your patterns of behaviour, you are dealing with the root causes and how you react to them, rather than simply masking their e ects.

Transform Hypnotherapy are specialists using a progressive relaxation technique to access the subconscious mind and then reprogramme it with more desired patterns of behaviour.

Clinical hypnotherapist Juliette Harris says our subconscious mind is like a large le storage facility, which stores our automatic responses such as breathing and blood

Clinical hypnotherapist Juliette Harris

circulation, along with learned responses, such as walking, holding a pencil or driving a car.

“Our subconscious mind also stores those problematic learned responses or behavioural habits, including overeating, smoking, fears and phobias, anxiety or sleep disorders,” says Juliette.

Hypnotherapy is a safe and enjoyable process that changes lives by also assisting with other problems, including enuresis (bed-wetting), nail biting, pain relief, con dence or public speaking.

“ e client is awake and in control of their responses during hypnosis. It’s very similar to driving on ‘autopilot’ when you lose track of time, but know that you followed all the road rules subconsciously.”

While just one session can be su cient to deal with minor shorter term issues, says Juliette, two to four sessions spread over several months are more bene cial to those with long-term and deep-rooted problems.

MONEY

Lobby to leave KiwiSaver alone

KIWISAVER is a “no brainer”—as long as governments will leave it alone. It is good because the Government puts in $1000 when you start.

It is good because the Govern-ment contributes $10 a week as long as you put in $20 a week or more.

It is good because your em-ployer has to put in the same amount as you. The $10 a week is still good for those self-em-ployed.

The $10 a week is also good for people who are not working (e.g. at-home mothers).

IT’S GOOD AS LONG AS THE POLITICIANS LEAVE IT ALONE

When KiwiSaver started out, the Government would contrib-ute $20 a week as long as you put in $20 a week.

When National got elected in 2008, they promptly cut the government contribution from $20 a week to $10 a week, citing difficult economic conditions.

To be fair, that was in the

middle of the Global Financial Crisis and things were indeed tough.

But will we ever get a retire-ment scheme that future govern-ments leave alone?

That’s what we all want, so we can have confidence in our retirement plan.

KIWISAVER IS A NOBRAINER

You need the Government to leave it alone.

Tell your MP in no uncertain terms to leave it alone.

KIWISAVER TAX You are taxed three times on

your KiwiSaver. You pay tax on the money

before you put it into your Ki-wiSaver.

The investment earnings are then taxed. Then when you re-tire, and invest the money from your KiwiSaver into income-producing funds, you will be taxed again.

THE GOVERNMENT WILL EVENTUALLY MAKE A LOT OF MONEY FROM YOUR KIWISAVER

The Government put in an initial $1000 plus they contribute $10 a week or $520 per annum, but then they tax the invest-ment earnings.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE—TAX AT 17.5 PER CENT?

Example: A KiwiSaver with total contributions of $500 per month x 25 years.

At a 6 per cent gross return (no tax), it will grow to $349,000. Taxed at 17.5 per cent it will grow to $298,000.

In this example the Govern-ment will have “contributed” $13,500 and taken back over $50,000.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE—

TAX AT 28 PER CENT? Example: A KiwiSaver’s total

contributions of $500 per month x 25 years.

At a 6 per cent gross return (no tax) it will grow to $349,000. Taxed at 28 per cent , it will grow to $272,000. In this example the Government will have “contrib-uted” $13,500 and taken back over $77,000.

IN TIME, IT’S A HUGE MONEY SPINNER FOR THE GOVERNMENT COFFERS

Once a few million people get into KiwiSaver and their ac-counts really start to grow, the Government will be making— no, taking—heaps more in tax revenue.

In the US, people form lobby groups and hassle politicians on issues that they want fixed or changed.

In New Zealand we don’t lobby them, but we should.

Most countries offer some sav-ers some tax incentives

Many Western countries have tax-advantaged superannuation schemes.

LOBBY, LOBBY, LOBBY Before the election, send your

MP or favoured election can-didate an email, and tell him/ her that if they want your vote: • They need to promise to leave KiwiSaver alone (or improve it). • They need to promise to look into reducing the internal taxes on KiwiSaver.

IT’S GOODAS LONGASTHEPOLITICIANSLEAVE IT ALONEWhenKiwiSaver started out, theGovernment would contribute$20 a week as long as you put in$20 a week.WhenNational got elected in

2008, they promptly cut thegovernment contribution from$20 a week to $10 a week, citingdifficult economic conditions. To be fair, that was in the

middle of the Global FinancialCrisis and things were indeedtough. But will we ever get a

retirement scheme that futuregovernments leave alone? That’s what we all want, so

we can have confidence in ourretirement plan.

KIWISAVER IS ANO-BRAINERYou need the Government toleave it alone.Tell yourMP in no uncertain

terms to leave it alone.

KIWISAVER TAXYou are taxed three times onyour KiwiSaver. You pay tax on themoney

before you put it into yourKiwiSaver. The investment earnings are

then taxed. Thenwhen youretire, and invest themoneyfrom your KiwiSaver intoincome-producing funds, you

will be taxed again.

THEGOVERNMENTWILL EVENTUALLYMAKEA LOTOFMONEY FROMYOURKIWISAVERThe Government put in an initial$1000 plus they contribute $10 aweek or $520 per annum, butthen they tax the investmentearnings.

WHAT’S THEDIFFERENCE—TAXAT 17.5 PERCENT?Example:AKiwiSaver withtotal contributions of $500 per

month x 25 years.At a 6 per cent gross return

(no tax), it will grow to $349,000.Taxed at 17.5 per cent it will

grow to $298,000.In this example the

Government will have“contributed” $13,500 and takenback over $50,000.

WHAT’S THEDIFFERENCE—TAXAT 28 PERCENT?Example:AKiwiSaver’s totalcontributions of $500 permonthx 25 years. At a 6 per cent gross return (notax) it will grow to $349,000.Taxed at 28 per cent , it will growto $272,000.In this example the Governmentwill have “contributed” $13,500and taken back over $77,000.

IN TIME, IT’S AHUGEMONEYSPINNER FORTHEGOVERNMENTCOFFERS

Once a fewmillion people getinto KiwiSaver and theiraccounts really start to grow, theGovernment will bemaking—no, taking—heapsmore in tax

revenue. In the US, people form lobby

groups and hassle politicians onissues that theywant fixed orchanged. In New Zealandwe don’t

lobby them, but we should. Most countries offer some

savers some tax incentivesManyWestern countries

have tax-advantagedsuperannuation schemes.

LOBBY, LOBBY,LOBBYBefore the election, send yourMP or favoured electioncandidate an email, and tell him/her that if they want your vote:■ They need to promise to leaveKiwiSaver alone (or improve it).■ They need to promise to lookinto reducing the internal taxeson KiwiSaver.

Dignity in death for your petsGREENBURIALS: JaneandMatBogust saytheirbiodegradablecardboardpetcaskets canform thebasisof familyfuneraryoccasions.

A biodegradable cardboard petcasket product will allowfamilies and children to givetheir beloved pets the send-offthey deserve.Jane Bogust and her husband

Mat of Rest In Pets have createdthe range of pet caskets andurns, which have been speciallydesigned in New Zealand.“Young children especially canfind it tough to understandwhentheir pet dies and sayinggoodbye can be very difficult, stressful and sad,” saysMat.Where did this idea arisefrom? One of our friends hadstuffed their guinea pig into anold tea box to bury it. Not verydignified. We knew that wecould create somethingmoremeaningful.Who are you specificallyaiming at?Kids and families. It

assists the child to deal with thegrieving process and offers theparents the tools to help. It’s a helpful solution forfamilies. What are your productsmadeof?Cardboard, specifically:Caskets—E Flute corrugated,Wallets (outer package)—BFlute corrugated, Urn—500Micron cardboard.

What pets can theyaccommodate? Small: mice, budgies, small rats, fish etc.Medium: guinea pigs, large rats, small rabbits etc. Large: cats, large rabbits, some small dogsetc. Urn: ashes. Is this suitable for thebackyard ‘‘cemetery’’?Yes,verymuch so. It’s to create anexperience around and celebrate

the life of a valued familymember.Whatwas your first pet?Afemale rat called Pebbles. Shewas so cool— an explorer! I stillremember her to this day.As a kid did you holdceremonies at the passing ofyour pets?Yes, I remembermydad digging a hole and I putPebbles in an old tin canwith aletter.Have you any pets now?Not atpresent— though our childrenwill have a small pet soon. What do you hope yourproduct will achieve forfamilies? An option to have anaffordable yet quality/usefulitem for farewelling a belovedpet with dignity and style.■ Check out the range ofcoffins and urns at the Rest InPets website, restinpets.com

Executive style and outstanding views265 Major Hornbrook Road, Mt Pleasant$855,0005 bedrooms | 4 bathrooms |5 toilets | 3 living | 2-car garage | Listing number: FM4383

The views will impress you and the overall space of this home will truly amaze you with a sumptuous family living room,

warmed by a modern log burner and a large lounge looking out to the Southern Alps and the sweeping sea views of Pegasus Bay.

The four double bedrooms plus office/fifth bedroom, served by the three bathrooms, will meet the needs of a large family with such space hard to find on the hill. The master bedroom suite includes a walk-in robe and en suite, and connects with an additional room that offers a variety of uses from extra lounge, family games room or teenagers’ retreat. It would also be ideal as a home office or treatment room, as it has its own street access. With these endless possibilities, viewing is essential.

With decks flowing out from the living areas, outdoor entertaining is fully catered for and offer appealing mountain views. To complete the home, there is a double garage with a large workshop to the rear along with ample off-street parking, all set in easy-care grounds.

The owners’ decision to sell is firm as they have made the decision to downsize as the family has flown the nest. Do not miss this rare opportunity to find a beautifully presented, spacious family home. Call to book a viewing today. Open Home: Sunday, August 24 & 31 - 2.15pm to 3pm.
