EYESORE: Cathy’s on Cranford has been labelled an ‘eyesore’ by one city councillor.

ANDREW KING

A city councillor has launched a campaign against a Cranford St corner dairy because its earthquake support structure is an “eyesore” and a danger to motorists.

Shirley-Papanui city councillor Ali Jones says Cathy’s on

Cranford’s wooden structure, put up after the February 2011 earthquake, needs to come down.

The temporary structure was put there by the dairy owners to support the parapet protecting pedestrians from being hurt if an aftershock occurred.

Cr Jones said the structure was

an “eyesore” and a danger to motorists

“Temporary means temporary and four and a half years is not temporary – whatever the reasons,” she said.

She said the structure meant motorists at the intersection had their visibility hampered.

“This shopping area is

important to the local community. The businesses worked hard to re-establish after the quakes and have continued to work hard to thrive. This eyesore is not respectful of this or the local people who are proud of their community.”

The Shirley-Papanui Community Board will investigate what it can do about the structure.

The board has asked city council staff for legal advice.

Cr Jones said city council staff expect to have a plan ready within four weeks.

City council engineers would assess the structural plywood and bracing panels and see if they could be removed safely.

Vehicles will no longer be allowed to park close to a busy Papanui intersection.

The Shirley-Papanui Com-munity Board approved no-stopping lines for the corner of St James Ave and Harewood Rd on Wednesday.

The measure is to stop cars from parking close to the inter-section and limiting motorists’ vision.

Harewood Rd is a minor arte-rial road with an average daily traffic volume of about 13,500 vehicles a day.

The lines will be painted on the corner of St James Ave and head north along Harewood Rd for around 18 metres.

They will be identical to the no-stopping lines on the opposite corner of the intersection.

Board chairman Mike David-son said people push the limits of where they can park.

“So many people are looking for car parks they will go right to the edge of intersections,” he said.

There is high demand for park-ing along that section of Hare-

wood Rd with all available road space used for parking.

The lines will mean there are two fewer parks on the road.

The cost of the yellow lines is around $50 and it will be funded out of the city council traffic operations budget.

It follows after nearby residents of Matsons Ave also successfully lobbied for no-stopping lines in July.

HELICOPTER FOR BIKERSt John and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were sent to McLeans Island Rd to transport an injured moun-tain biker. The incident hap-pened on October 11 around 10.30am at the mountain bike park. The man had come off his bike and was air-lifted to Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department with moderate injuries.

ONE INJURED IN CRASH One person was injured in a two-car crash on the North-ern Motorway just south of the Waimakariri Bridge last Monday. An ambulance attended around 4.30pm. St John transported one person to Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department with minor injuries.

BURNSIDE CRASHA man was injured in Burnside on Thursday after the car he was driving hit a wall on Memorial Ave. St John sent an ambulance and rapid response vehicle to the scene around 5pm. A man in his 30s was taken to Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department with moderate injuries.

LIMITED VISION: Cars parking too close to the Harewood Rd, St James Ave intersection has prompted the community board to paint no-stopping lines.

Rod and Lynley Cullinane, of Fendalton

We are absolutely appalled at the proposed closure of the Fendalton Post Shop which we use just about on a daily basis for both mail and banking.

How can this step backwards be allowed to happen?

New Zealand Post has a social obligation to the community in which it operates and we expect it to go through a rigorous consultation process with that community before a final deci-sion is made.

Dan Rosewarne, of North-wood

The Christchurch City Council has proposed sweeping changes to Christchurch City wards, community boards and coun-cillor numbers in a six-yearly review of election arrangements.

The initial proposal saves the rate payers around $24,000 each year, and includes having 16 wards with 16 councillors – up from the current 13.

The 16 ward 16 councillor model will save the rate pay-ers around $24,000 annually

because, although there will be three additional councillors, there will be one less commu-nity board.

This will mean savings in staff and administration costs.

Christchurch’s ratio of one councillor for every 26,000 people is far higher than the ratio in other New Zealand cit-ies, where there is an average of one councillor for every 16,500 people.

Aaron Keown - Shirley-Papanui Community Board deputy chairman

They say good things take time, but how much time?

When it comes to something as simple as extending the rail corridor cycleway from Tuckers Rd to Belfast, time is against us.

Nobody shares the feeling of frustration at the lack of ac-tion more than I, as I was the councillor back in 2013 that got this route and the 14 other major cycleways put on the budget.

It was big, bold but a simple plan.

Take every major cycleway that was needed to make Christ-church the most cycle friendly city in New Zealand and deliver that vision during our five-year post quake rebuild.

It was originally not meant to finish until past the year 2040.

I’ve chosen to raise one tiny piece of our rebuild to highlight the many failings that most of our city are not even aware of.

The reason I’ve chosen the cycleway from Tuckers Rd to Belfast is because it is easy pickings for a city council in control of the rebuild.

This is a simple extension

of an existing cycleway that requires no land purchases, no special designs, no lengthy con-sultations, it is a no-brainer!

It is in fact a great way to get some serious kilometres of cycleway onto the network quickly.

So what is wrong with this picture?

The timeline has quickly gone

from five years to eight years and the budget has more than doubled. And for what?

Just more and more excuses rather than results.

Christchurch ratepayers are being duped into believing this is acceptable as budget blowouts and failed timelines become the norm.

What happened to the Christ-church that once would have been up in arms over such failures?

Are we just too tired to care?Sadly an entire generation

who could have had the pleasure and health benefits of cycling to school in the north of Christ-church are going to miss out.

GOOD SAMARITANS Linda O’Brien would like to thank the two people who came to her aid in the Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre carpark. Last week the Nor’West News reported she tripped over a low fence on her way to the pool. She also thanked two staff members from Jellie Park and St John. “I am bruised but making a recovery,” she said.

CIGARETTE SPARKED FIREThe Harewood Fire Service was called to a small vegeta-tion fire on Russley Rd on Monday around 1pm. The fire was in the medium strip and started after a cigarette was thrown out the window of a passing car. A fire communi-cations spokesman said they had received ‘quite a number of calls’ about the fire. When the crew arrived on scene they used a shovel and some dirt to extinguish it.

GROYNES ROADS NAMEDThe Groynes Park Develop-ment had all its road names approved by the Shirley-Papanui Community Board on Thursday. Seventeen new roads were named in the development with the board looking closely at the mean-ings of the names in relation to the people who are developing the land.

After a false start, the Papanui Library has finally reopened.

The library was due to be opened last Monday but was delayed by a day.

City council facilities rebuild unit manager Darren Moses said it was a minor delay.

“The reason for the revised opening date for Papanui Library was that some minor delays in the project meant the final inspection and application for Code Compliance could not take place until Tuesday,” he said.

Some earthquake repairs are still to be done, but those were always intended to be complet-ed outside opening hours and are on schedule.

The work took two months,

with the ceiling now intact for the first time since the earth-quakes.

The Papanui Customer Ser-vice Desk has also returned to its usual location at the front of the building, located at the corner of Restell St and Lang-dons Rd.

Shirley-Papanui Community Board deputy chairman Aaron Keown said it was great the Papanui community have their library back.

“Libraries are as important now as they have ever been and the visitor numbers are there to support this,” he said.

Parking has been banned on one side of a narrow Redwood street.

On Wednesday the Shirley-Papanui Community Board ap-proved no-stopping lines on Wil-lowview Drive.

The lines will be on the outside corner opposite numbers 52, 54 and 56 to prevent the road from becoming too narrow.

This will still allow residents to park outside their houses but will mean the people wanting to use the Styx River Esplanade Reserve will have to park on other sections of the road.

Board chairman Mike Davidson said a user of the reserve raised concerns about too many parked cars on the road.

He was worried there was limit-ed visibility and a risk of crashes, particularly when exercise classes were on in the reserve.

The cost of the no-stopping lines is around $50.

Residents that would be affect-ed by the proposal were given an information leaflet and a chance to raise concerns.

But no responses were received.

Hi Ravil, tell us where you grew up?

I am a San Francisco native. Grew up in California, went to school there and university. I went to San Jose State University. My plan was to be a high school choir teacher.

You wanted to be a high school choir teacher?

Yeah that was my dream, you have to dream big when you are 17. I knew teaching was involved in music and back in those days you used to pay around $28 a semester to go, so I thought, what the hell, I’ll just go.

So that’s where the love of mu-sic really took off?

It is where I started taking voice lessons for the first time. Also brass and conducting lessons. I started in 1978 and I finished in 1986, that was my bachelor degree, it’s called the California plan, My masters I started in 1986 and finished in 1993. And in between I went off and did a bunch of things.

Well, that is a long time study-ing. What did you do in between?

There is a group called Chanti-cleer, the king singers of America. They are a 10 man vocal ensemble and multi Grammy award winning group. I found myself, at the age of 23, singing choral music all around the world with them. We went to Europe and did four US tours, and me, not knowing what any of that meant, was just singing and having fun. Oh, and making money.

So you went back to finish your study?

Yeah, I changed my major to tenor. While doing all that my friend asked me if I wanted to do a musical. They handed me a piece of music and said go for it and it just happened to be for a show called Les Miserables.

That is quite a serious musical right?

There was a line right around the block, all there to audition. It had only been open on Broadway

for about a year, and it is a huge performance. After I had sung they offered me the role on-site, which just doesn’t happen.

So how did you transfer from that into opera?

Well in between all of that I had done a few operas outside of university. I really enjoyed them. I left Les Miserables after a year and a half and finished my masters

degree which I had changed from education to vocal performance. I was offered the job of house tenor at Opera San Jose. So then I was a paid opera singer.

I heard that you were recruited to perform in Phantom of the Opera?

Yeah I was called up to do it, and I said that I didn’t do musical theatre any more and that I was

an opera singer. I was told they had just the part for me. I played Piangi.

Working with the directors on those shows must have been a life changing experience for you.

It was. Working with guys like Harold Prince, Trevor Nunn and Andrew Lloyd Webber was just amazing. Hal Prince is arguably the greatest ever musical theatre director in American history. He was just so clear on what he want-ed to achieve. I would sit behind him in rehearsals and listen to him work. It was the same with Trevor Nunn, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Franco Zeffirelli, it is amazing how they all have similar qualities.

So what brought you to New Zealand?

A Kiwi wife. The talented, amaz-ing and brilliant Amanda Atlas. We meet in New York. She was a young artist doing her OE and we meet in a theatre. It was your typical stage romance. Then, being the move-about type that I am, I wanted to go to Italy, so I asked Amanda to come with me.

Just like that?Actually it kind of was just like

that. We were falling in love and all that as we had been going out for a year and a half. I had finally got my papers to work in Italy. My style of opera was being done much more over there. It was

easier for us to get married a year earlier than we planned to get her over there, so that’s what we did.

Where to from there? We moved from Italy to London.

I was tired at that point. I had been performing for about 25 years, moving around, so I got back into teaching. I taught in Newcastle for a bit. We talked about having a family and said we would move to New Zealand if we were to have kids. One week later we were pregnant.

That was quick. It made sense to move back

here. My parents had just died and my sister lives in Melbourne, so we decided that we would move to Christchurch. It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Where did you start working when you moved over to New Zealand?

I moved here and met some people who told me the Burnside music teacher was on maternity leave, so I found myself after all these years teaching. We have our kids doing more than most univer-sity music programmes do.

After all your travel, how does the talent in New Zealand stack up against the rest of the world?

I think you have more talent per capita than anywhere I have been in the world. The talent is there

but the professional teaching is not there yet. I am starting to teach teachers now. You have one of the top ten tenors in the world here at the moment, Simon O’Neill.

So you enjoy working at Burn-side High School?

I work with an absolute brilliant man named Gavin Hurley. He is the greatest music teacher and ad-ministrator I have ever met in my life. I can’t sing his praises enough.

What is your favourite piece of music?

Verdi’s Requiem. It is like opera, theatre, a musical and god all rolled into one. It is a very special

piece to me. I have performed the solo about 13 times.

So how do you enjoy living in Christchurch?

I had to learn how to have a Kiwi Christmas, which was great.

They’re not too bad are they?Yeah, chardonnay on the deck. I

can handle it (laughing). So what do you enjoy about

teaching the most?Giving back what I was given. I

was blessed by some phenomenal teachers. The 16-30 age range is boundless. It is so great to work with them. If I can pass on what I was given, that is why I do it.

Papanui Preschool is very much part of its local neighbourhood with great links to the local primary school. Located on a quiet, residential street, the children become part of the community on their regular walks. Parents love what they can do for their children. Not only do they provide a quality service with a focus on free play, they offer ten hours of free childcare every single week. That means families can afford to find the time to work, catch up with friends or run errands knowing that their children are being well cared for by a qualified, experienced team which is proud to offer child to teacher ratios that are lower than Ministry requirements. Catering for ages 0-5 years, this small, family-centred preschool is independently owned and operated giving it the flexibility to meet the individual needs of the children and their families. With the equivalent of $50 of childcare provided for free, Papanui’s pre-schoolers benefit from a family-environment, structured transition to school and the support of small, dedicated team.

New Zealand’s first female Prime Minister is to lead a Spring speaker series at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.

On Tuesday Dame Jenny Shipley will discuss the quali-ties girls need to thrive and lead in the future in her presen-tation, Creating and Celebrat-ing Opportunities for Girls.

Dame Jenny is now a profes-sional director, advisor and keynote speaker.

She has a special interest in mega trends in business, eco-nomic and social development opportunities.

She is a patron of the Aus-tralasian Alliance of Girls’ Schools and a strong advocate of empowering young women.

She was New Zealand’s 36th Prime Minister, and is still the only female leader the National Party has had.

Dame Jenny will be fol-lowed in the speaker series by businesswoman and former Rangi Ruru pupil Sarah Robb O’Hagan.

At 43, she heads one of the international fitness company Equinox, and has recently been featured in the Wall Street

Journal. From the title of her up-

coming book “Extreme You – Bringing All of You to All You Do”, she will demonstrate to young leaders of the future how to find and grab opportu-nity with both hands.

Principal Julie Moor said that one of the school’s greatest responsibilities as an educa-tor was to ensure that young women were well equipped for the world beyond school.

“It is a strength of our network that we can give our

girls and the wider community the opportunity to listen to and learn from influential and inspirational female leaders,” Ms Moor said.

Dame Jenny will speak in the school’s new Merivale Lane Theatre on October 20 and Sarah Robb Hagan will follow in the Gibson Centre on November 5.

Proceeds from the events will be put toward the Rangi Ruru 125th Anniversary Schol-arship Appeal and Project Blue Sky fundraising campaign.

INSPIRATION: Dame Jenny Shipley will speak in Rangi Ruru Girls’ School’s new Merivale Lane Theatre on October 20.

OPPORTUNITIES: Sarah Robb O’Hagan will speak at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School on Tuesday.

New entrant pupils at Paparoa Street School were able to meet the man behind The Wonky Donkey.

Author Craig Smith visited the children at school on Thursday to sing some song and read stories to them.

Lucas, Ella, Zoe and Eden only started school at the beginning of the week.

Paparoa Street School teacher Margaret King said they were so lucky to have such a famous New Zealand author visit and tell his sto-ries to them.

“He is very popular,” she said. The book is based on a song Mr

Smith wrote in 2005 after hearing the joke, “What do you call a don-key with three legs? A wonky don-key”.

The song, which won the 2008 APRA New Zealands Children’s Song of the Year Award, was later turned into a book in 2010.

The book is illustrated by Katz Cowley and has sold over 400,000 copies.

Paparoa St School pupils have had a go at designing energy ef-ficient houses.

The year 5 and 6 pupils researched energy efficient houses and then had to design their houses with eco-friendly features.

All their inventing is for the Mean Green House competition by Genesis Energy.

The competition aims to be a comprehensive, in-depth inquiry that really engages students to meet challenges through informed design of a sustainable energy house.

Some of the features include

solar panels and sheep wool insulation, as it is sustainable. Others include concrete floors to absorb heat and slowly release it, grey water tanks, vegetable gar-dens and triple glazed windows.

They also put in north-facing deciduous trees for shade in summer and heat in the winter.

Pupils have been working on this project for the past 11 weeks. They visited a house from ‘Ecobuilt’ and had an expert who made passive homes come and talk to them.

Some of the children used recycled tyres and bottles for a BBQ shade or driveway.

ECO HOUSE: Paparoa St School pupils Harriet, Joshua and Finn have designed a modern house.

POLITICAL: Stu-dent Alice Cheer-smith’s work, one of the pieces up for auction.

INK AND WATER: Joshua Monson’s work proves that art does not only mean painting.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Student Laura Brown showcases horses in her work.

Papanui High School students have taken a step towards being real artists - by holding an art auction.

The auction is online and showcases some of the work the students have created.

However some are only selling prints of their work, while others are willing to sell off the origi-nals.

All the money raised will be

put into a fund for the senior art students to have a ‘budget’.

Head of art and art history Mark Soltero said it was a great way to keep the students in the mindset of an artist.

“I am keen to keep it very real for the students,” he said.

He said some schools hold live auctions with other artists’ work to get the people through the door.

But he believed the work produced by his students should have no problem selling in the auction.

“This is the fourth year we have held it,” he said.

“I hope that this will show the students how art engages with the community.”

BUTCHERS TAKE AWARDSButchers in the Norwest News area have won five gold awards in The Devro New Zealand Sausage Competition. Peter Timbs Meats won gold in the continental ready-to-eat category with their kransky, and the traditional pork category with their 100% Free Farmed Pork sausage. Hellers won both the flavour and rounds categories with their beef flavoured and black pudding entries. Bishopdale New World won the gourmet category with their pork, cracked pepper, coriander and basil sausage. An overall winner will be found at the final in Auckland on October 21. FIGHT FOR NATIONAL TITLEBP Edgeware’s Sanjay Pradhan and John Somerfield and BP Fendalton’s Hyunjoo (Pearl) Park and Narissa Cossgrove are set to compete in the Retail Excellence Awards competition. The titles of Best Rookie, Best Manager and Supreme Barista of the Year are up for grabs at the national finals in November. The regional heats kicked off last week.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School has won two awards at the Nor-folk Island Theatre Festival.

The school won best youth production and runner-up best overall production.

Director of theatre arts, Robert Gilbert has been named Best Director for the sixth time.

The year 13 students performed Breaking News, a play by award-winning New Zealand playwright Angie Farrow.

It explores the relationship between self-image and me-dia, and Mr Gilbert described it as a perfect fit for the cast.

“The girls immediately

identified with the central character,” he said.

“As an ensemble piece of physical theatre, they really had to commit to a disci-plined rehearsal regime.

“They put their hearts and souls into their roles and that came across with their win-ning performance.”

It was only the second time Rangi Ruru students have competed at the festival.

In 2013 a group of Year 12 students from the school won Best Production for their per-formance of Bottom’s Tale, an excerpt from William Shake-speare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

TALENTED GROUP: Maddy Berquist, Abby Shaw and Sharne Jones performing in Breaking News which won best youth production and was runner-up best overall production.

Daniel Cooper has won the Rotary Club of Belfast-Kaiapoi Young Totara Award for his contribution to music in the community.

He was given the award last month and, like many before him, he planted a Totara tree in a specially dedicated area in the Styx Mill Reserve in Hussey’s Rd, Harewood.

He plays in the Christchurch Boys’ High School Orchestra, Jazz and Dixie bands and is involved in Christchurch Girls’ High School Orchestra and Rangi Ruru Jazz Band.

When he was in year 5 at Elmwood School he wrote the music for the final assembly.

His was selected for an ex-

change programme to Australia, where he played in the Mel-bourne Concert Hall.

He is a member of the New

Zealand College of Organ-ists, plays at Knox Church and is also an organ scholar at St Mary’s Pro Cathedral and con-ducts organ and instrumental recitals on a regular basis.

He plans to attend Canter-bury University to complete a degree in music and graduate diploma in teaching, to become a music teacher.

The Rotary Club of Belfast-Kaiapoi has been making Young Totara Awards annually since 1992 to recognise significant contributions to the life and wellbeing of the community.

Social enterprise Two Weeks Without has won the Best Business Plan in the Entre $85K Challenge.

Two Weeks Without challenges businesses to go with out something for two weeks while fundrais-ing and raising team moral at the same time.

It was created by Fen-dalton resident Bridget Williams, Hannah Wil-liams and Rachael Greeson about 11 months ago after one of the Williams sisters challenged the other to go two weeks without shoes.

The twins decided

to turn their private challenge into a charity fundraiser and Two Weeks Without was born.

Bridget Williams splits her time between the social enterprise, study at Canterbury University and sitting on the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board.

Hannah Williams is a nurse at the Christchurch Hospital.

Rachael Greeson gradu-ated from the Canterbury University at the end of 2014 and jumped at the chance to be involved with the project.

Entre is a not-for-profit

Canterbury university company, run by students for all tertiary students in the Canterbury region.

Through competitions, like the 85k challenge, Entre seeks to provide stu-dents from all disciplines with real business-world experience.

WINNING PLAN: Luke Gillespie and Bridget Williams show their certifi-cates after winning Best Business Plan for the Entre $85K Challenge.

GroutPro is New Zealand’s largest specialised grout and tile restoration business. The reason for their growth is simple; people need what they offer. Grout is a very porous product and if it’s not sealed it’s just a matter of time before it will soak up and absorb all the dirt and moisture that sits on top. Even regular cleaning of your floor won’t help - the dirty water penetrates the grout almost immediately, your grout will begin to discolour and stain - and there’s nothing you can do about it because the problem is INSIDE the grout itself. The beautiful look of many a tiled floor has been ruined by stained and dirty grout, which until recently was un-fixable without grinding out and replacing the grout - an expensive and messy process.

Now there’s GroutPro! Using their flagship colourseal service GroutPro

can repair, recolour and reseal grout at a fraction of the cost of regrouting. This process also removes any risk of damaging the tiles, and even better – prevents the grout from any future staining or permanent discolouring. The end result? Your floor looks brand

new, and stays looking brand new for years to come.

Looking at selling your house? GroutPro can restore your tiled floors and add significant value to your property! Looking to build a house? Use GroutPro to seal your grout at the start and avoid any future discolouration issues from the get go! Just fed up with the dirty

look of your tiled surfaces? GroutPro can return them to their former glory!

Locally owned and operated, GroutPro has over 40 specialists operating throughout New Zealand with a fantastic reputation for high quality workmanship and service across the country.

As well as their colourseal product - they provide a number of different solutions to common tile-related problems. These include: • Damaged or Failing Grout (they can replace it)• Moldy Silicone (often in showers - they can replace it)• Dodgy Grout in Shower Bases (they remove it and install Epoxy Grout)• Chipped or Cracked Tiles (they can remove and replace tiles)• Dirty Tiles (if all you need is a good clean - they can do that for you!)

GroutPro offer a free quote, and will work with you every step of the way to make sure you understand exactly what is required, when it will be done, and what it will cost - BEFORE you commit to anything!

Don’t put up with dirty floors, moldy silicone, cracked tiles, or stained grout any longer. Call GroutPro for your free quote today!

SportsSt Bedes College student Seb Johnson has carved his way to a silver medal in the Na-tional Scholastic Surf Cham-pionships in Gisborne.

He was competing along-side 11 other surfers from the Seventhwave Canterbury Scholastic Surf Team.

Johnson, 16, was one of only four in the longboard section of the championships.

“In previous years the long-board section has been stron-ger,” he said.

In spite of the low numbers Johnson said he was ‘stoked’ to get the silver medal saying it was the best he had ever

done at the event.“We were competing on fi-

nals day and the waves were pumping hard.”

The team had a strong showing at the champion-ships, placing fifth out of the 12 teams competing from throughout New Zealand.

The team gained six semi final placings.

Liam Wright, Tegan Bish-op, Jack Wilson placed fifth in their respective divisions.

Henry Hawke, Moss Thompson and Zac van Eekelen all placed seventh.

The surfers trained all though the depths of win-

ter thanks to the support of coaches Nick Black and Alan Temoananui.

Team manager Aaron Lock said they started training twice a week from May with beach training in the weekend and fitness on the Thursday.

“Temperatures in the wa-ter got down to eight degrees this year which is colder than usual,” he said.

Johnson spends a bit of time in the water, working at Learn to Surf in Sumner for team manager Aaron Lock.

He also helps out at the Sumner Surf Life Saving Club in the summer.

CARVING: Seb Johnson won silver in the longboarding event at the National Scholastic Surf Championships in Gisborne.

FLAME FILES

MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Somebody stole a motor scooter from Domain Tce in Spreydon last Thursday.

They probably pushed it along the road until they got to the Coronation Hall.

This is a hall with plenty of history in the area. It’s still utilised by a softball club and appears to be quite a wee social hub.

They won’t be using it for a while. That’s because our motorcycle thief set the machine on fire and left it leaning against the Coronation Hall.

The walls are wooden weatherboard. They caught on fire which then spread into the roof space. The hall is quite badly damaged and will take months to repair.

The question is why? Why would the offender do this? If you can supply any logical reason then you’re cleverer than I am.

Fires starting from discarded cigarettes are

much less prevalent than many people believe. But at this time of year they do occur here because of the Canterbury nor’wester.

This week we saw two examples, one on the Main South Road, Hornby, and the second on Russley Rd where cigarettes thrown from a car window have set fire to the bark or foliage on a central traffic

island. If you’re a driving

smoker please, please use the car ashtray.

Ducklings are still about, still getting stuck and still being saved by firefighters. Once in Woodham Rd and once in Epsom Rd at Sockburn this week.

It’s not our job. But someone has to do it. Well done both fire crews.

Cigarettes still a source of roadside fires

Parenting can be difficult when you’re together, let alone when you are separated. Parents or guardians may disagree on

things such as day-to-day care, contact arrangements, choosing a school or child care, or what happens with the family home. This can be distressing for everyone, particularly children/tamariki.

But there’s a lot you can do to make things easier, for both you and your children. Parenting Through Separation is a free programme now being offered by Family Works in various locations in North Canterbury, Selwyn and Christchurch, depending on demand.

By taking part, you’ll get practical advice about separation and planning for your child. You’ll learn about talking to your ex-partner about arrangements with the children, child-focused planning, and resolving issues. The programme can also help grandparents and other wider family/whānau members work out a dispute about how children will be cared for.

Your central suburbEdgeware is

Although Edgeware is a city centre suburb, it has retained a real village feel with its blend of locally owned and operated shops, a variety of places to eat and drink, and homes that range from traditional villas to brand new low-rise apartments.

Although it’s close to the CBD, Edgeware is a community in its own right with all its amenities just an easy stroll away. At its heart is Edgeware Village itself, a cluster of homes and shops that reflect the characterful nature of this area. The Paperback Centre is an Aladdin’s cave of second hand books, a destination for all booklovers who will travel to Edgware just to go there, and foodies will make the trip just to visit award winning butcher, Peter Timbs and Crisp for fresh fruit and veges.

There is an arty, creative vibe to Edgeware. Streetwear shop Vandal Supply Company also sells pieces by local street artists and the Packe Street Park and Community Gardens feature mosaics and sculptures alongside the residents’ raised beds and fruit trees. temptingly-unusual flavoured donuts. There are plenty of options for food

and drink. Circa Food and Wares has great coffee, bagels and baked treats, and Pepperberry is not just a great café – it’s home to a stunning florist, too. As well as cafes, hungry locals and shoppers can call in for fish and chips, sushi, or a tradition KB’s pie. Sema’s Thai restaurant serves some of the yummiest Thai food locally, and at Bailies Bar and Restaurant you can enjoy terrific hospitality and food in a traditionally welcoming pub setting.

Edgeware might not have malls, but it has a community spirit and a terrific choice of places to eat, live and shop.

Redwood has a lot to offer

Renamed in the 1960’s for a large redwood tree on Prestons Road, this popular suburb boasts an eclectic

range of facilities that more than meet the needs of the families who make their homes there.

Dissected by Main North Road, the area has heaps of green space as well as homes, schools, a library and retail and food outlets. A destination in itself, the Redwood Hotel is home to Sequoia 88, a long-standing traditional venue for birthdays, celebrations, Christmas functions and more. This family friendly restaurant welcomes children and their breakfast buffet has proven to be a great location for watching those early morning Rugby World Cup matches. Other dining and drinking options include a taste of the West Coast at Coasters Tavern, plus heaps of international options such as Curry Time, New Asia and Spagalimi’s. There are terrific bakeries such as yummy Country Kitchen, fish and chip shops, burger outlets and cafes to sit and relax in over a great coffee.

Type 2 diabetes is becoming a major health issue for New Zealand, with obesity recognised as one of its most preventable causes. According to a Diabetes NZ spokeswoman, “While there is no silver bullet, we do

know we can prevent obesity through lifestyle and exercise.”For their part, the team at Physical Sense Gym & Physio also

recognise that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the two key factors underpinning successful weight loss and have developed a programme specially designed for diabetes clients. It is proving popular with people across a wide age range (20 to 70), including many who are overweight or severely obese.

The programme comprises a circuit that allows the clients to do the exercises at their own pace, without any pressure to keep up, combined with advice from the community diabetes team who support them through the necessary changes to their food habits.

“The advantage for these clients is that we are a normal public gym, so our diabetes clients are mixing with people who don’t have health conditions,” team member Ietje van Stolk says.

“And by coming to the gym, our diabetes clients are getting out of the house and are meeting other people including people with the same issues and weight problems as they have, and being physically active is very motivating. They encourage each other and there is plenty of fun and humour between themselves and with the instructors, who are there to lean on and help everyone reach their goals.”

Medical research shows participation in regular exercise gets the heart rate up, helps strengthen muscles, improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, Ietje points out. It also positively affects lipids and blood pressure, reduces the risk of cardiovascular events and improves quality of life.

from clients about the programme. One, who goes six times a week, says he loves having somewhere to go and hates the days he is not going to the gym. Another says, “It’s the only thing I have for me, and I have improved my eating habits.”

Others have found walking easier and have increased energy and fitness.

To encourage those on limited income, the first four sessions are free, and if clients have WINZ support the programme usually remains free, Ietje says. Attending the gym is as easy as a bus ride which stops right at the front door. There is also plenty of parking available should you choose to drive.

A body of research already exists showing aerobic exercise improves brain function in older adults, but there is a limited amount of

literature on how it affects young adults. The Otago researchers, led by Department

of Psychology senior lecturer Dr Liana Machado, set out to test the oft-held belief that the brains of young adults in their prime might not benefit as much as older people from regular sustained exercise.

They took 52 tertiary students, aged

between 18 to 30, and put them through a series of cognitive tests on a computer while measuring oxygen availability in the frontal lobe of their brains, as well as their self-reported exercise frequency.

Dr Machado says their “surprising” findings, just published online in the journal Psychophysiology, show that both blood supply to the brain and cognitive functioning appear to benefit from regular exercise in young adults.

“This provides compelling evidence that

regular exercise, at least five days per week, is a way to sharpen our cognitive ability as young adults – challenging the assumption that living a sedentary lifestyle leads to problems only later in life,” she says.

The research also provides potential insight into understanding why people who regularly engage in aerobic exercise tend to function better on a cognitive level.

“I think the idea that young people do not have to worry about exercising since they are in their prime developmentally is rapidly being overturned by mounting evidence that even the brains of young adults can benefit from regular exercise,” she says.

“The exercise could involve brisk walking or more vigorous activity, and could be made up of a few 10-minute bouts of exercise,

rather than one single block of exercise,” she says.

The researchers also found that body mass index was not a key factor in how well the brain functioned, indicating that regular engagement in physical activity may be more important than body weight.

Dr Machado says she had noticed over the years that university students appeared progressively less fit.

“I wondered whether we might find significant relationships between exercise levels, oxygen availability in the brain and cognition in the young adults, but no studies had considered this in healthy young adults.”

These findings come at a time of increased scientific focus on links between exercise and cognitive health in older adults.

Regular physical activity improves brain function even in young adults considered in their prime and at the height of cognitive ability, according to a new University of Otago study.

Leaving a legacy and helping to save lives

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in New Zealand and also a major cause of loss of quality of life. By leaving a bequest to the Christchurch Heart Institute, we can work to reduce this number through valuable research into the prediction, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

[Edition datE]2

CoQ10 reduces all causes of mortality by 50 per cent. Researchers were amazed with the benefits of Coenzyme Q10

(CoQ10) to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well.

In a recent multi-country double blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. It was found that patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. Also, patients on the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in death not only from cardiovascular events, but from

all causes.According to lead study author professor

Mortensen, this study is the first in over a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality, and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems, but these drugs also reduce CoQ10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure.

CoQ10 levels are known to decrease as we age. Keeping our levels up of this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer. For more info, call Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy on 388 5757. We Are Always Happy to Help!

Natural cardiovascular treatment

Even without exercise and diet, changes many have found it beneficial, although even better and quicker results are often obtained

with extra exercise and an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called

Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of stroke and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits.

It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid.

To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.

Miracle weight loss fruitAn extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called Garcinia

Cambogia from India and other parts of Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health.

In fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. The Dr Oz Show has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural

supplement to support weight loss.

We sit in cafés, offices, the car, in front of TV and computers.   Yet we know that inactivity is one of the high risk factors for

diabetes. More than 270,000 New Zealanders have diagnosed diabetes and many have it without knowing.

Poorly managed diabetes is a major cause of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, blindness and foot and leg amputations. It is estimated that about a quarter of people with diabetes may not meet the basic requirements of foot care to avoid the risk of future amputation.

Keeping circulation boosted in feet and legs is essential to help avoid foot complications – numbness, tingling, loss of feeling, abrasions and ulcers, which do not heal and can lead to amputation.

So keep moving while you sit – in front of TV, in the office, the car. The Aircycle circulation booster enables this – helping maintain good blood flow to feet and legs. It is helpful for anyone who sits long periods as well as those with diabetes and arthritis.

Aircycles are available from Diabetes Christchurch, pharmacies, online at www.aircycle.co.nz or by phoning 04 569 5013.

Lifestyle Village in Geraldine is now centred on stage 5, with our first residents in this stage moving in late November. Concurrently, with this

is the construction of our new McKenzie Leisure Centre, which will cater for many lifestyle activities such as an indoor heated swimming pool and spa pool, gymnasium, art and craft area, library, lounge (with pool table, etc), hairdressing room and other key amenities. Out on the north side, the bowling green (plus croquet) is being formed to be followed by petanque, mini-golf and a children’s playground. The official opening of the Village and Leisure Centre is scheduled for Saturday, November 28, with the next day being a Public Open Day between 1pm and 4pm. Visitors are most welcome to come and inspect the Village and Leisure Centre on that Sunday. There will be light refreshments and music in the Lounge and some villas will be open for inspection.

There are now 32 occupied villas with 49 residents. As the number of residents has increased, so has the social aspect of village living. The spacious and well-insulated villas are a mixture of stand-alone and duplex styles with four basic plans to choose from. They all have at least two bedrooms and internal access garaging. There is a village bus, men’s workshop, allotments and parking for caravans, boats and campervans on-site. We will eventually build up to 120 villas, 10 apartments and 12 assisted-care apartments, the latter being

McKenzie Lifestyle Village

attached to McKenzie HealthCare next door. McKenzie HealthCare is an aged care facility with rest home, hospital, palliative care and dementia services.

For more information, please give David Connolly a call on 0800 84 55 24 or visit www.mlv.co.nz.
