More than 3350 people have signed a petition calling for a new Bishopdale Library and Community Centre in the area.

But with discussions about the future of the facility held behind closed doors, they will not get an answer from the city council un-til Thursday.

The library has been run from a temporary premises in the Bishopdale Mall, since the build-ing was closed due to structural earthquake damage.

The city council planned to re-pair the building, but the plans stalled this year as the repair was likely to cost more than double the $1.2 million allocated for re-pairs.

Options for the centre are ex-pected to be announced this week as part of an update on the city council community facilities rebuild programme.

A meeting is being held on Thursday to make the announce-ments.

Fendalton-Waimairi Com-munity Board chairwoman Val Carter said the facility was the busiest community centre in the city before the earthquakes, with regular bookings from 25 differ-ent groups.

She said the older facility was difficult to access and lacked heating and ventilation, and said a new build would be better than a rebuild. • Turn to page 2

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof opening night

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the story of a dysfunctional family at war with itself, premiered at The Elmwood Auditorium on August 22. The themes of greed, repression, toxic relationships remain as fresh and relevant as when Tennessee Williams penned it in 1955.

Produced by Canterbury Repertory Theatre and directed by Annette Searle, the fi rst night performance kept the audience enthralled with the cast’s delivery of the wit, dark humour and sarcasm contained in this play.

Acted at fl oor level rather than on a raised stage gave an intimacy and contact with the players which enhanced the effect of the production. Feelings ran high among the watchers who responded with appreciative applause.

More than 1200 teachers were nominated in the first week of the New Zealand’s Most Inspiring Teacher campaign, with 360 nominations for Canterbury teachers. The annual competition is organised by Warehouse Stationery, with more than $40,000 worth of travel, stationery and technology prizes awarded to the teachers who receive the highest number of votes. Some of the local nominations and comments are below. People can vote for their teachers at www.inspiringteachers.co.nz Voting closes on Sunday.

• Miss Sophie Carter – Ferndale School

She is the most dedicated teacher, she works with non-ver-bal autistic children, absolutely no one could do her job any better. She is amazing with the children and so passionate about them and the job. It’s so wonder-ful to see. The parents think she is fantastic also. I would love for her to be rewarded for all the hard work she does.

• Ms Annamaree Asare – Christchurch Girls’ High School

With her energetic teaching spirit, every English lesson is al-ways interesting; she makes bor-ing and tedious work seem fun by being innovative, that is making them into challenges and having rewards at the end; her dedica-tion to her role as an English teacher is clearly reflected on her students who enjoy her lessons and achieve desirable grades; her determination and perseverance are what make her such a won-derful and succesful teacher. Ms Annamaree Asare never ceases to entertain and engage us.

• Mrs Kate Bateman – St Albans School

She always says ‘if it is to be, it is up to me’, we all love hav-ing her around and being there for us. Mrs Bateman tells us do things that we love because that will make us stronger at every-thing we do and we’ll be better at everything.

• Mrs Davidson – Waimataitai School

Mrs Davidson shows all the great qualities of what a fantastic teacher should be. She is caring and patient and always strives to give each of her students the one-on-one support and encourage-ment they need. My son Brook-lyn has improved significantly in all aspects of learning and we owe it to such an amazing teacher.

Inspiring teachers HANGING

AROUND: Cotswold School pupil Luke Carville,10, was proud to reach the top of a 10m rope climb during a visit to the Christchurch School of Gymnastics last week. The senior pupils were able to try the rings, balance beams, parallel bars and jump off huge trampolines into large foam pits during the visit.

Keen climber

• From page 1She said the overwhelming

feeling from the community was that they wanted a new pur-pose-built facility, even if it was smaller.

Petition organiser Marilyn Henderson presented the peti-tion to the city council at their meeting on Thursday.

She told them a library and community centre would “put the heart back into the commu-nity”.

“The people of Bishopdale and surrounding areas are really

missing the busy complex and desperately need it back.”

She said limited space at the temporary library meant people in wheelchairs were not able to use it, while the library did not have enough space to run some of their programmes.

“While the librarians are do-ing a marvellous job in the tem-porary library, it’s not meeting our needs.”

The city council announce-ments about the community fa-cilities rebuild will be filmed on Thursday, and posted on the city council website.

BY GABRIELLE STUART

More than 560 people have signed their names to a petition calling for right-turning arrows at a St Albans intersection.

They say the intersection of Cranford St and Innes Rd is dangerous, because of increased traffic in the area.

Christchurch Central Labour candidate Tony Milne (inset), led the petition.

He said people had to wait for four or five changes of the lights to turn right at the intersection, when the road was busy.

“People are saying they’ve wit-nessed all sorts of near misses, because people are becom-ing frustrated and running the lights.”

Options for turning traffic at the intersection have been looked at by the city council, but have been delayed as the inter-section is due to be upgraded when Cranford St is widened.

That is not likely to happen for at least three years.

Mr Milne said that was too long to wait.

“Three or four years is too long to wait when there are is-sues of safety, and it is causing accidents.”

There was a crash at the inter-section earlier this month, but it was not clear if turning traffic was involved.

Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson

said the board was aware of is-sues at the intersection.

“Obviously traffic is a huge problem in the whole ward, and the more people move out north the worse this is going to get.”

Mr Milne plans to present the petition to the board this month, hoping to win their support.

But Mr Davidson said the board would need more infor-mation before it could make a decision.

“The big point of the whole equation is the cost. We need

to know the cost to find out if installing right-turning arrows over a temporary period would be worth it.”

Installing right-turning ar-rows would involve a city coun-cil traffic study and report on the intersection before the physical works could start.

However, Mr Davidson said he believed something more would need to be done at the intersection, and was open to exploring the options.

“They need to address this situation because it’s going to

get worse. Once Cranford St is four lane that’s not automatical-ly going to solve the problem, it has its own issues because along the road traffic will need to merge back into a two-lane system.”

He said there were similar is-sues at other intersections in the ward, but said they needed to be looked at separately.

“I personally think you need to look at each individual inter-section, because they are unique and have their own problems and complications.”

If you could sum up the aims of the Inspire Foundation in a few words, how would you describe it?

Inspire Foundation is a special Canterbury based charitable or-ganisation that we set up post-earthquake to help fund talented young Cantabrians, some who were quite affected by the earth-quakes. It has now grown into an organisation that supports the fu-ture leaders of Canterbury.

So how did you personally get involved?

I’ve been involved for a number of years in the Harcourts Foun-dation with my business partner Mike Green, and I have a friend, Bob Davison, who chairs the Mainland Foundation. Both of us over the years have been inundated by applications from individuals, young people especially. Neither of those organisations are geared up for funding individuals, and actu-ally organisations that fund indi-viduals are few and far between. So it just came up in conversations.

We both knew there were large numbers of young people who had a dream, who want to do some-thing like study dance in Russia or

study waterskiing in Florida, and we set up this foundation to fund those cases. We started it from scratch three years ago.

What are some of the cases that have really stood out to you over those years?

Some of the ones that have been exceptional are people like Anton Cooper, who came to us because he was trying to raise money to go and compete overseas. He’s now been crowned mountain biking world champion. Then there’s Tas-man Davids, who was trying to get to St Petersburg to study ballet and is now very successful dancing over there. There’s Sophie Pascoe, who we supported when there were no swimming pools available three years ago, so she was flying out of Christchurch to train. Hayden Withers has won a world dancing

championship, and he’s now look-ing an absolute star in that area. How many do you want? The list goes on and on and on.

We started from scratch three years ago, and we’ve now given funds to grantees in every sort of endeavour. We recently heard from a student who created an engine that runs on any sort of fuel. He wants to develop it so it can be used in the Third World to help some of the poorest nations develop.

We also run business skills train-ing courses, so we can pass on the things we’ve learnt in our business careers to these young people.

Do you do any of the teaching yourself?

I take one of the classes, teach business planning. I’ve done some teaching before through Har-courts, teaching business planning to some of our staff, but this is a bit different.

They must be fascinating to teach.

It is, because they’re like spong-es, they’re quick to adopt what you teach and many are quite bright. You know you’re laying a fantastic base for the future.

It’s about teaching these kids to raise the bar, and spend time on the business side of their endeav-ours rather than just the practi-cal side. Talking about things like building databases, one person might say I’ve got 150 names on my database and I’ve raised $65,000 for my sport or field, and suddenly they see the value of building those connections.

Harcourts International director Paul Wright is one of the founders of the Inspire Foundation, which helps fund young people in Canterbury to achieve their goals. He speaks to Gabrielle Stuart about the great things young Cantabrians are achieving across the world.

achieve goals and live dreamsWhat skills do you think these

young people need most, that they might not learn elsewhere?

Well, we take a pretty practical approach. Most in demand is the mental skills and mental manage-ment area. Gilbert Enoka, who teaches mental skills for the All Blacks, came in and taught some of our grantees how to deal with adversity when things aren’t go-ing your way. It’s something ev-ery young person and every ath-lete deals with, when they get sick, when they get injured, when people turn them down. It’s about how to deal with failure. I think that’s something everyone needs to learn.

It must be very rewarding work. For us, seeing talent supported

and seeing these guys achieve these goals and seeing them grow is hugely rewarding. You listen to these young people speak at our functions, and you hear their dreams, they want to compete in the Olympics or create an engine that can pump water for Third World nations, and then they go out and achieve their goals.

One of the young people, Alex, had the dream of working in the slums in Sri Lanka, using cricket to teach children. He’s 22, and he’s now set up two schools working with about 200 kids. It’s stupen-dous. These are the people who are going to be the future prime ministers and leaders of our com-munities.

Part of the motivation behind this is that we believe the only way

to address the problems in our communities is to train up lead-ers who will take responsibility for them.

There are a lot of people who say the Government should be doing this, the council should do that. But there are very few people who will stand up, put their hand up and say I will solve this. Whenever that happens, whenever someone puts their hand up, things change. When people say I will build a swimming pool, I will start a school in Sri Lanka, that’s what will bring change in our community.

Can I ask, do you have any chil-dren yourself?

Yes, I have three daughters. Claire is my eldest, she’s 30 and she’s now a business development manager for Harcourts. She repre-sented New Zealand in ice hockey, so she spent a year studying over-seas and I followed her around the world for a while. My middle daughter, Jacqui, has also worked for Harcourts, and my youngest

daughter, Sally, is now working in the Mediterranean with her fiance, living a life of luxury.

Did your own daughters inspire your work with young people?

Actually, one of my daughters, when she was younger, saw me do-ing business planning with some of my business associates and asked me if I could do something simi-lar, tailored to her age group. So she organised a whole group of her friends, and we used to hold ses-sions every six months or so with 10 to 20 of her friends. I taught them business planning, and used to partner them up and help them set goals, and it was amazing how quickly they achieved those.

It was amazing over the years to see the progress of these young people. Some of those kids are still in their 20s and own two or three gyms or are achieving great things overseas. That was when I realised the powerful influence in that sort of programme, which is something we brought, later on, to Inspire.

These days young people, young Kiwis especially, don’t seem to stay in one place for long. When you’re sending young peo-ple overseas, do you think any of them will return?

A proportion of our people won’t return to Canterbury, but we think probably better than 50 per cent will. The ones who do come back will make change here, but the ones who spread across the globe are still influencers, and they do still stay in contact. If we get anoth-er dancer come through, Tasman would be the best person to help them make connections in Europe, so through that network if they’re

still connected they will help Can-tabrians, but in a different way.

Are you a born and bred Canta-brian yourself?

I was actually born in Dunedin, but I came to Christchurch at about five, and have lived here all my life. I don’t want to say how many years that is! I went to St Thomas’s here, which was a great experience.

What is it that has kept you here?

I’ve had the opportunity to move but I like the community here. If I want to dive I can head to Akaroa, and if I want to ski it’s not far to Mt Hutt. I can easily fly to the office in Sydney or Auckland if I need to. I like the environment of the Garden City, I like the values of people here and I love the rugby. There’s almost everything here, and if not I can fly in a couple of hours to be where I need to be.

Has working with these young people, who are doing amazing things, inspired you to set any of your own goals?

That’s a really good question. Working with them is very inspir-ing. I think what they’ve done is shown us how vital and necessary the Inspire Foundation is. Hence our drive to build a capital fund, to fund future generations long af-ter Bob and I are gone. We’ve been very inspired by how successful it’s been, and how much the mem-bers really enjoy it and how proud they are of what these young kids achieve. So I think, for me, they’ve inspired me to just keep on and keep driving this forward.

SUCCESSFUL: Sophie Pascoe and Hayden Withers are some of the young talents who have received support from the Inspire Foundation.

Clayton COSGROVEMP Waimakariri – Working Hard for You

Why I’m supporting Clayton Cosgrove!

“I was really scared when some locals were regularly firing air gun slugs into my backyard and frightening me and my dogs. I couldn’t get any help. But after Clayton intervened the Police arrived and sorted the situation out. I feel a lot safer now thanks to Clayton.”

City council contractors have been called “paid vandals”, after mowing over about 200 plants donated by the community.

The native plants were donated and planted by volunteers along the banks of the Ilam Stream, in Avonhead Park and Crosbie Park.

Over the past three years city council contractors have repeat-edly mown over the small plants, most recently in June this year.

Network of the Ilam Stream secretary Richard English said the volunteers were fed up.

“It has certainly been a matter

of frustration for us. We’re trying to enhance the area through vol-unteer work, and we’re having it cut down by paid vandals.”

He said it seemed to happen whenever new staff were ap-pointed to maintain the parks, and believed that staff were not being properly briefed when they took on the job.

He said a number of the plants were native grasses, and none had been able to grow very high, so new staff probably did not re-alise they were there.

“We put stakes in place last time we replanted, but the next time the contractors came in they carefully destroyed every-

thing around the stakes and left the stakes there.”

The group raised the issue with the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board, who brought it to the city council last month.

Since raising the issue with the community board, city council engineer Owen Southen met with the group to discuss solu-tions to the problem.

He told the group the city council would replace the plants, and make sure instructions were provided in writing to any new contractors.

Volunteer Tony Royds, who managed most of the planting,

said he was frustrated the issue had dragged on so long.

“The most demoralising part was having the council not seem to care and not do anything about it.”

But since the meeting, he said he was hopeful systems had been put in place to solve the problem.

“Owen Southen is a very ca-pable bloke. It is the first time we’ve had the council come to us and share our concern, so it is encouraging.”

The city council referred the issue to the Environmental Committee, so citywide policies could be looked at to stop the problem happening again.

-What is cryolipolysis?

The technology of using cold to decompose fat cells was pioneered by the president of the Pennsylvania University School of Medicine in America and has since gained FDA approval as well as European CE. Unlike other slimming technologies out there, this one is designed as an alternative to liposuction- for areas of localized fat, e.g. back rolls, muffin tops, love handles. As such, we have enjoyed a lot of a success with this in areas like LA, Tokyo, Shanghai, Sydney where the people eat healthy, exercise regularly, but are bugged by the stubborn areas of fat. Coincidently, this type of client also shows the most noticeable improvement, where clinical trials have shown patients losing up to 10mm per treatment.

A Bryndwr businessman says he is leaving Christchurch because of spiralling rents.

The Village Cobbler on Wairakei Rd closed on Friday.

Business owner Glenn Page said that rent had increased by almost 60 per cent over the five years he had operated on the site.

He said his rent had risen from about $1100 per month in 2009, to $1700 per month this year.

The business will move to Amberley next week, where he can rent a cheaper premises.

He said he wanted to stay in the area, but felt he had no other options.

“I’m being forced out by rent rises,” he said.

Landlord Dean Marshall confirmed the rent increase, but said the rent was very cheap to start with.

He said there had been a lot of interest in the property, and believed the rent lined up with the market value of the property.

Mr Page said there were cheaper premises in other parts of the city, but most had other shoe repair shops nearby.

He said that in a “throwaway shoe society” it was difficult to make a profit, but believed he could have kept the business going if the rent had not gone up.

“In some respects I’m sad to go, because I’ve enjoyed the people here and the cus-tomers. It is unfortunate, but you’ve got to do what you can do.”

The business has relocated to a new prem-ises at the Amberley Flowers & Garden Cen-tre.

Mr Page said that he would still welcome business from local customers, who could drop shoes off for collection at the Second Heaven clothing shop on 169 Wairakei Rd.

CLOSED: The Village Cobbler shoe repair shop on Wairakei Rd closed last week, and the business has moved to Amberley.

The Salvation Army go into the community with no agenda, committed to building trust and developing relationships with people. Drop into the campervan or call the church o ce on 323 8257. Open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

The Salvation Army - out and about in Christchurch NorthThe Salvation Army have always

been an integral part of the community helping in the day-to-day struggles which many

face. ey have a name synonymous with practical Christianity, deeply committed to making a di erence in the lives of the people around them.

We are beginning to develop and implement ways of serving the community in Christchurch North. “We want people to be aware that we are here in Belfast, happy to go out and work alongside others whenever it is necessary,” says Gill Waugh.

e Salvation Army helps in a variety of ways, packing up houses for EQC repairs, taking people to a hospital appointment, or even advocating for people when they need support. e Salvation Army campervan is about connecting with people wherever they are in the community. Every ursday it is parked behind the Family Store in Cranford Street so feel free to come and chat with one of the team. e campervan carries helpful information or it may be about just having someone to talk to over a co ee.

It can be di cult to approach an agency for help when someone is in the hardest time of their life. e Salvation Army o er Advocacy support, working alongside government agencies WINZ and Housing Corp to facilitate people who need help

in the accommodation process, not to duplicate what is already being done. People o en do not know how to access what is available.

A positive e ect of the trauma caused by the Canterbury earthquakes has been the community feeling which has grown. “Streets have become neighbourhoods again,” says Neil Waugh. “We want this to continue to grow, building on the strong feeling of community which came amid the devastation.” We want to support the strengthening of families, neighbourhoods where people feel safe, valued and are connecting with each other. ey recently arranged a Community Day for the Northcote area in the Northcote School grounds. Watch out for the next one on October.

Former Christchurch Boys’ High School deputy head boy Ruaridh Mackenzie has been awarded a rugby excellence scholarship at Bond University on the Gold Coast.

The 18-year-old loose forward was one of two students to be given the scholarship, and will begin his studies next January.

He made the decision to move to Australia after falling in love with the Gold Coast during an interview at Bond last Novem-ber.

“When I came for my inter-view for the scholarship and they showed me around the uni-versity. I loved it so much, I was really determined to come here,” he said.

“When I found out I’d won the scholarship I just jumped at it – this is where everyone comes on holiday from New Zealand, it’s a great place to be.”

Mackenzie is studying to-wards a diploma in sport man-agement and is considering switching to a business degree in future years.

He has been appointed captain of Bond University Rugby Club’s new premier colts side, where he dons the No 8 jersey and is hop-ing to play for the Queensland

Reds under-20s in the near fu-ture.

“I’m an All Black at heart but I will just see how things go here,” said Mackenzie.

“It is quite different to back home where I would be playing in the mud and single-figure de-grees but over here you’re play-ing in 30-degree weather and have to put sun block on before games.”

“It is just a completely different style of rugby, a lot faster because of the dry conditions but I really

enjoy being able to throw the ball around and playing a more expansive game.”

“It’s a great time to be here, especially with the start of the new National Rugby Champion-ship later this year. I’ve played off the bench in a couple of Bond’s premier games and the exposure to the stronger men’s game is in-valuable.”

Mackenzie boasts a formi-dable rugby pedigree, with his father representing Scotland as a prop in the 1980s before mov-

ing to New Zealand when he was just three months old.

Raised on a beef and crop farm near Christchurch, he boarded at the prestigious Christchurch Boys’ High School where he was vice-captain of the school’s first XV and first XI.

He was also selected to play in the Crusaders’ under-18 side in 2013.

When he’s not playing rugby, the outdoors boy likes to try his hand at fly-fishing in some of the South Island’s spectacular rivers.

SCHOLAR: Former CBHS pupil Ruaridh Mackenzie has been awarded a scholarship at Bond University on the Gold Coast.

BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

We’ve made it through to September which means that it is officially spring.

For once winter seems to have passed in no time without major weather-related events.

Firefighters are the back-up to our am-bulance colleagues and that has been in place for a while which means steady call-out numbers.

There were 18 of these calls this week amongst the 85 in total, which corre-sponds with a decrease in some of the oth-er things we do. It would appear that fires and false alarms are down. That’s got to be a good thing.

And for the ambulance officers, the as-sistance of four fit firefighters has got to be advantageous. It’s what you’d call a win-win situation.

Fires are dangerous, even small ones. An outside light fitting caught fire in Westmorland recently. A scramble by the neighbour to bring his garden hose to the rescue resulted in him falling off the fence, cutting his leg and giving himself bruising that will be a reminder for a while.

He was treated by ambulance and al-lowed to go home, where he’s probably glaring at the fence every time he looks out the window. On the bright side, the fire was extinguished with minimal damage.

Spring generally brings warmth and wind, which means vegetation and grass fires become more prevalent and more dangerous.

Care and early reporting will keep these to a minimum. That’ll be another win.

Volunteers make a difference every day – from driving a van to simply knocking on doors to see how people are doing.

Volunteering is a great way to boost your own wellbeing at the same time as helping your community. Volunteering includes all of the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: it helps us to connect, be active, take notice, give and keep learning.

Red Cross’ Cross Town Shuttle is a volunteer-run service providing transport for people in Christchurch without transport of their own and unable to use public transport. Volunteer drivers and assistants take people to medical appointments and leisure activities, helping to combat social isolation and allow people to continue to lead full lives, regardless of the impact imposed by road works and post-earthquake infrastructure repairs.

With plans to expand the service, Red

Cross needs more volunteer drivers and more volunteers to help with community outreach and door-knocking. Red Cross volunteers are a diverse bunch of people who come from a wide range of backgrounds.

Before Anthony Seumanutafa was a volunteer on the Cross Town Shuttle, he used the service to help him get across the city. “I find it to be a good way to help and socialise with people, and a way to say thank you to all those for their help – three for the price of one.”

This desire to help is what unites volunteers, says Christine Williams, outreach volunteer.

“We are able to give time, empathy, a listening ear and often some contact numbers for further assistance to enable the person we visit to continue to move forward.”

If you have a little spare time you could give, why not get in touch with New Zealand Red Cross now to find out how you could help make a difference too?

The Red Cross recovery team couldn’t function without wonderful volunteers who give their time to help people in Christchurch.

PAPANUI’S PAST

BY MURRAY WILLIAMS, PAPANUI HERITAGE GROUP

The railway revolution of the 1870s present-ed a practical and relatively reliable method of moving people and goods around Canter-bury.

However, the increase in motor car own-ership in the 1920s created a demand for more efficient roading around the fringes of the city, an investment which was to enhance the development of Papanui and townships such as Belfast and Kaiapoi.

Traditionally these roads had been main-tained by applying shingle, a process that re-quired constant grading to create a surface that was suitable for motor transport.

In 1928, an experiment in sealing a section of the Main North Rd in concrete was car-ried out; on December 21 The Press proudly noted that this project was ‘first of its kind in the South Island.’

The stretch of road chosen was that be-tween the Styx bridge and Chaney’s corner, a distance of about 4.6km that was con-structed of ‘Portland cement concrete’ laid by contractor Peter Graham and Sons for a price of ₤17,238, an amount funded by the Waimairi County Council and subsidised

by the Main Highways Board. The Press reporter considered that the new

surface provided the most ‘comfortable rid-ing in the province.’

The importance of the new section of road was underlined by the nature of its official opening at the Styx Bridge on November 29, 1928.

A photo taken at this ceremony provides enough clarity to identify some of the par-ticipants, for example on the extreme left of the photo is county council accountant Monty Moody, while  on the extreme right, Mrs T.O. Newnham, the wife of the Waimai-ri County Council chairman, is about to cut the ribbon.

The girl beside her is Rachel Cross who presented Mrs Newnham with the obliga-tory bunch of flowers.

Mr Newnham then headed a procession of cars over the new road, before returning to the Waimairi County Council building where lunch was provided for the 70 invited guests shown in the photograph.

The new surface must have been deemed satisfactory because in the early 1930s fur-ther stretches of the north road, at the Pa-panui end, were similarly paved.

Reducing the injury risk

New Zealanders love their sport, whether it is competing in the Commonwealth Games or kicking a ball around the back

lawn.Players of any sport know that there is a risk

of injury and, if this does happen, the team at Muscle People can help you get moving again and back on to the field, court or bike.

Muscle People’s professional physiotherapists can not only help with an existing injury but also provide advice on how to prevent injuries and discuss ways to enhance your sports performance at any level.

“We can tailor a plan to help with a person’s individual performance to address any issues like strength, flexibility, breathing control or core stability,” says Laurie Moore from Muscle People.

Muscle People has two clinics conveniently

located at the YMCA in Hereford Street and at the YMCA at Bishopdale, where they are open late on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and on Saturday mornings.

Post-operative rehabilitation is also a specialty at Muscle People, says Laurie.

“By looking at specific exercises following surgery, recovery can be optimised so people can get back to normal as quickly as possible. Exercise can help patients to regain their strength, flexibility and functions.”

Muscle People’s physiotherapists are experienced in providing post-operative rehabilitation and can also liaise with the surgeon to determine any specific requirements based on the individual’s operation.

Common surgeries that would benefit from post-operative care by a

physiotherapist include shoulders, backs, knees and ankles. Surgical patients do not need a referral from a specialist to access exercise rehabilitation and post-operative physiotherapy.

“We do suggest, however, that people let their surgeon know that they would like to return for post-operative care at Muscle People,” says Laurie.

To book an appointment for your sports injury, to help with your performance on the field or if you would like to find out more about post-operative care, telephone Muscle People in the city on 961 0236 or at Bishopdale on 360 3606. More information about the physiotherapy clinic is available at www.musclepeople.co.nz.

FOOD

Take control of your grocery budgetI know I’m not the only one guilty of impulse buying. Did I really need that pink choco-late crammed with hundreds and thousands and enticingly displayed near the checkout yesterday? It could have blown the budget (and the calorie intake) for the week. I noted a colleague falling into the same trap.

Flatmates and young mar-rieds often ask me how they can keep their weekly food bill in check. Here are 10 ideas. • Planning meals well in ad-vance eliminates the need to purchase last minute quick-

toprepare but more expensive convenience foods. • Make a rough meal plan start-ing with dinners followed by breakfasts and lunches. Take into account the number of people at each meal, their ages, gender and the amount of en-ergy they expend during a day. • Save fuel by planning some meals to be cooked in your

electric frypan, crockpot or mi-crowave oven, all of which use less power than conventional ovens and hobs. • Choose seasonal foods— they’re always lower priced than out of season goodies. Grow your own fruit and vegetables where possible. • Make a shopping list and stick to it. Check the pantry to en-sure you’re not buying an item you already have. • Try to plan menus around weekly supermarket specials. • Check the labels on the packets for “use buy” and “best before” dates. It’s uneconomic

to buy an item that will be out of date before you have used the entire amount. • Buy only what you require, especially with fresh produce. For example, it’s pointless buy-ing bananas just because they are on special at $3 for two kilograms, they are not going to be consumed before they go black and mushy. • Try to cook one evening meal that will last two nights. Stews, casseroles and crockpots are perfect examples. • Avoid those tempting displays in your supermarket— just buy what’s on your list.

CURRIED LENTILS & KUMARA Lentils and chickpeas provide cheap protein and carbohydrate power. 2 tbsp canola oil 1 red onion, diced 1 tsp each: cumin seeds, mustard seeds 1-2 tsp curry powder ½ cup red lentils 400g orange kumara, peeled and cut into 3cm pieces 2 cups vegetable stock 400g can diced tomatoes 390g can chickpeas, drained 3-4 tbsp chopped coriander or parsley

Heat oil in a large saucepan. Saute onion, until softened. Add spices. Stir and cook for 1 minute. Add lentils, kumara,

stock and tomatoes. Cover and simmer on low heat for 20 min-utes. Add chickpeas and coriander and heat through.

Great topped with extra coriander or parsley and served with plain yoghurt. Serves 4

SAUSAGE NIBBLES WITH SPINACH AND PASTA Choose well-flavoured fresh sausages for this recipe, for example minty lamb or Italian.

2 cups dried pasta curls or macaroni 1 tbsp canola oil 500g well-flavoured sausages 3 cloves garlic, crushed 400g can diced tomatoespinch chilli flakes 2 cups finely sliced spinach

Cook pasta according to packet instructions. Meanwhile, heat oil in a nonstick frying pan. Squeeze sausage

meat out of skins, making about 4 pieces from each. Roll into rough little balls. Pan-fry balls in oil for 6-7 minutes, shaking the pan so they cook evenly.

Add garlic, tomatoes and chilli flakes. Cover and simmer for about 5 minutes. Add spinach and cook until limp. Serve over pasta.

Q A&HOW CAN I TONE DOWN SOMEVERY HOT CURRY POWDER?Use less, or dilute with non-hot ingredients such ascardamom, coriander, cumin, fenugreek andturmeric. Or replace halfthe curry powder withgarammasala, which tendsto be spicy rather than hot.To decrease heat in a currythat’s already beenmade, addmore vegetables(particularly potatoes) ifthey have time to cook, plusstock, water or coconutmilk. Or stir in yoghurt atthe last minute. If eating atoo-hot curry, drinkmilk oreat a banana.

CAN I BOTTLE SQUEEZED LIMEJUICE IN THE SAME WAY ASFRUIT?Yes, either by the open-panmethod, or processed in awater bath. But either waythe juice needs to besterilised by heating, whichaffects its fresh flavour. Ithink youwould do better tofreeze the juice in ice-cubetrays (add grated zest if youlike), transferring frozencubes to a plastic bag forstorage. Lime slices andwedges can also be frozen, but once thawed the fleshwill collapse. Store freshlimes in the fridge.

Take control of your grocery budgetI

KNOWI’m not the onlyone guilty of impulsebuying. Did I really needthat pink chocolatecrammedwith hundreds

marrieds often askme how theycan keep their weekly food bill in

check. Here are 10 ideas.■ Planningmeals well inadvance eliminates the need topurchase last minute quick-to-prepare butmore expensiveconvenience foods.■ Make a roughmeal plan

starting with dinners followedby breakfasts and lunches. Takeinto account the number ofpeople at eachmeal, their ages, gender and the amount ofenergy they expend during aday.■ Save fuel by planning somemeals to be cooked in yourelectric frypan, crockpot ormicrowave oven, all of whichuse less power thanconventional ovens and hobs.■ Choose seasonal foods—they’re always lower priced than

out of season goodies. Growyour own fruit and vegetableswhere possible.■ Make a shopping list and stickto it. Check the pantry to ensureyou’re not buying an item youalready have.■ Try to planmenus aroundweekly supermarket specials.■ Check the labels on thepackets for “use buy” and “bestbefore” dates. It’s uneconomic tobuy an item that will be out ofdate before you have used theentire amount.

■ Buy only what you require, especially with fresh produce. For example, it’s pointlessbuying bananas just becausethey are on special at $3 for twokilograms, they are not going tobe consumed before they goblack andmushy.■ Try to cook one eveningmealthat will last two nights. Stews, casseroles and crockpots areperfect examples.■ Avoid those temptingdisplays in your supermarket—just buywhat’s on your list.

Supporting the Nurse Maude Hospice

Opening Monday, September 1, in Bishopdale Shopping Centre is the very popular Nurse Maude Hospice Shop. Having opened

its rst hospice shop in Merivale in 2008, Nurse Maude will now have six hospice shops across the city: in Merivale, Avonhead, Sumner, e Palms, Kaiapoi and now in Bishopdale.

All are run by a combination of sta and volunteers and are open seven days a week

from 9.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday.

Known for their high quality of stock and branding, the Nurse Maude Hospice Shops have become the place to go for new, pre-loved and vintage clothing at a fraction of normal retail price.

“Our hospice shops are very much part of the community,” says Sue Bramwell, Nurse Maude’s General Manager of Marketing, “and everyone who donates to, or buys from, our hospice shops is directly supporting the Nurse Maude Hospice.”

Covering a geographic area which encompasses Banks Peninsula, Ashburton and Kaikoura, and the Hurunui, Selwyn and Waimakariri districts and the West Coast, Nurse Maude’s specialist hospice palliative care and support is free of charge to patients and their families.

“ ere would be few people who have not had, or will not have, someone they know, or love, cared for at the Nurse Maude Hospice,” says Sue, “and the Hospice Shops and Maudes on Trade Me are a critical part of raising money for the hospice.”

While the hospice shops concentrate on clothing and fashion accessories, Maudes on Trade Me sells almost everything else from antiques to household goods.

You can drop clean clothing and smaller items for Maudes on Trade Me o at any of the hospice shops, while larger household items or furniture can be collected by emailing them on

[email protected] or calling Maudes on Trade Me on 375 4643.

Sue says the ongoing support of the Nurse Maude Hospice relies heavily on the generosity of the people of Canterbury.

“ ey haven’t let us down yet,” says Sue, “and their support has meant we have always been able to provide the care and support our patients and their families need.”

For the people of Bishopdale and surrounding areas, the latest Nurse Maude Hospice Shop is a welcome addition to the shopping centre.

With new stock put out throughout the day, those in the know say it pays to go there o en, if not daily, to take full advantage of the great clothes on o er.

Menu for menThe ultimate Kiwi beer batterServes 4 Ingredients1½ cups Self raising flour1 tsp Salt1 Egg, whisked until fluffy330ml Beer, very cold4 Fish fillets, fresh1 Plain flour, for coating1½ Ltr Vegetable oil, for deep frying

DirectionsHeat the oil in a deep pot or deep fryer to 180 deg C. Have your fish fillets, coating flour, tongs and a tray lined with paper tow-els ready to go. Place the self-raising flour and salt in a bowl, make a well and pour the egg into the centre, pour over the beer and whisk until a smooth batter forms. Dip the fillets one at a time into the flour, shake off excess then dip into the batter.

Carefully lower it into the hot oil, and drag it backwards and forwards for a few seconds before letting it go — this will help to seal the batter. Cook for 2-4 minutes, depending on the thickness of each fillet, until crisp and gold-en. Lift out of the oil and drain on paper tow-els, season with salt and serve with lemon.

DirectionsSpice rubIn a hot pan, lightly toast cumin and cori-ander seeds with cardamom pods and star anise. Cool, add peppercorns and blitz in a spice grinder (or crush in a mortar and pes-tle) until finely ground. Mix ground spices with sea salt, freshly ground espresso and dark brown sugar. Mix together well and store in a sealed jar.MeatBrisket is a flavourful cut of meat from the

breast (or lower chest) of the beef. Contain-ing a lot of connective tissue, brisket is per-fect for slow roasting (allowing the collagen to gelatinise), resulting in a succulent tender roast.Clean the meat again at home, leaving a small fat cap (about ½cm) on top of the meat. This will allow it to retain moisture while it slowly cooks. Liberally rub the meat all over with your favourite spice rub (see above).AromaticsIn a casserole or roasting dish just large enough to hold the meat, place carrots, cel-ery stalks, and onion. Add a garlic, the or-ange or lemon zest and juice and fresh herbs.CookNestle the meat into the veges, add enough stock (wine, cider, or beer) to half cover the meat. Cover with the lid (or foil) and cook in a low oven (150 deg C or less) for 5-6 hours, basting frequently, until the meat is unctu-ous and giving.ServeAs a Sunday roast lunch; Slice the meat to a platter, ladle with the pan juices, and serve with a potato mash, mashed brussels sprout gratine and fresh green vegetables.Southwestern style; Pull the meat and serve with sweetcorn bread, kumara croquettes, homemade baked beans, sauted kale or spin-ach, and coleslaw. As a dipped sandwich; Butter thick slices of fresh white bread with yellow mustard. Adult Learners’ W e e k / H e T a n g a t a M ā t a u r a n g a

celebrates all adult learning whether it’s upskilling for a better job, preparing for further study, for improving life skills, working out your learning journey, learning how to organise with others, or having fun. Th is year, the week will be launched in Christchurch on September 8, with a focus on how the rebuild has encouraged women into trades. Th e launch, hosted by CPIT, will be held at the new Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre and will feature women currently undergoing trade training.

Th is country has a strong culture of adult learning, and every year tens of thousands of people take part in some form of community-based learning. Dr Jo Lake, Director of Adult and Community Education (ACE) Aotearoa, says many communities in Aotearoa have been transformed through community-based learning initiatives provided in and by educational institutions including schools, NGOs, community houses or on marae. She says, “It’s not just technical skills that are enhanced through learning. When adult learners share their stories, they talk about improvements in speaking, reading and writing English, understanding numbers and speaking Māori. Th ey also talk about benefi ts like better self-esteem, greater tolerance,

enhancing social cohesion, addressing ecological concerns, increased confi dence and improved career prospects.

Participation in communities is another outcome related to learning. Learners oft en want to give something back. Th e Government priorities for Adult and Community Education (ACE) include literacy, numeracy, English language (ESOL), te Reo Māori and sign language. Providers all over this country off er learning in these core areas and also in many others. Courses not eligible for funding are oft en run with experts contributing on koha or on a low fee, or totally voluntary basis.

Adult Learners’ Week/He Tangata Mātauranga is organised by ACE Aotearoa and is supported by the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO. It incorporates International Literacy Day on September 8.

Learning in your older years Aoraki Polytechnic

A practical training programme through Aoraki Polytechnic will ensure Virginia Smith achieves her dream of becoming a beauty

therapist.Th e busy mum is studying towards

her Certifi cate in Beauty Th erapy at the polytechnic’s Christchurch campus.

At the end of the 34-week programme she will open her own business from home.

Virginia said the hands-on course was providing all the skills she needed to achieve her goal.

“Th is course is covering all the bases. It’s a combination of practical and theory. And it’s really fun. Th ere is such a variety. We are learning new things each day,’’ says Virginia.

Topics covered on the course include massage, body and facial electrical treatments, skin care and makeup, waxing, manicure and pedicures, anatomy and physiology, and business and professional conduct.

Virginia enjoyed the practical side the most. During the programme, students had the opportunity to work with real clients, manage bookings and get direct feedback by running beauty clinics.

Aoraki Polytechnic ticked all the boxes for Virginia and came well recommended from

friends who had studied there. Th e timetable was also fl exible enough to fi t around caring for her two children.

Prior to having children, Virginia had worked as a dental assistant and had trained as an interior d e s i g n e r . However, the lure of beauty therapy was strong.

“As I got older I decided it was time to do something for me. Th is is something I really wanted to do.’’

Last year she completed the polytechnic’s Certifi cate in Beauty Skills programme, which is an introduction to the Beauty Th erapy course.

“Th at course was really fantastic and I got a taste of what the Beauty Th erapy course would be like. I realised I could handle being a mum and studying at the same time.’’

Virginia had already set up a room in her house as a clinic. Th e doors will open for business once she graduates.

Focus on the Middle East at WEA

Educating adults about the world around them and helping to increase understanding of international aff airs is all part of

the wide-ranging education programme off ered by the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA). While most Term 3 courses at the WEA are well underway two half-day Saturday seminars in September focus attention on the Middle East.

‘Th e Middle East, between Modernity and Traditionalism’ is the topic for Saturday, September 6, and will provide a brief historical background of the Middle East region since the emergence of Islam to the present day. Th e seminar will include the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century; colonisation and post-colonisation

leading on to contemporary history; and the adoption of modernity. Th e tutor for the seminar is Karim Pourhamzavi, a post-graduate student in political science and sociology at the University of Canterbury.

Th e topic for the seminar on September 20 is the BBC documentary In Search of Palestine: Edward Said’s return home, introduced by Karim Pourhamzavi. Edward Said (1935-2003) was a Palestinian-American whose academic works, especially his book Orientalism (1978) had a major infl uence on the humanities and Middle Eastern studies.

To register for these seminars or to fi nd out more about the courses on off er at the WEA email [email protected], phone 366 0285 or go online to cwea.org.nz.

In 1796 a community of American settlers in Ohio developed into a town. The elders decided to call their town Cleaveland, after General Moses

Cleaveland, a land surveyor who marked out the town’s boundaries.

In 1831 the town’s first proper newspaper was formed. The editor wanted to make a big splash with the first edition, so he proclaimed the formation of The Cleveland Advertiser.

There wasn’t enough width on the front page to put the big masthead type in one line, so he made an instant decision to leave out the first A in Cleaveland. No one seemed to notice and the incorrect spelling stuck to the newspaper and city it served.

“Checking spelling is always important,” said Brian Morris, Principal of New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “Whether a mistake is deliberate or accidental, the impact can last for years.

“That’s what also happened to the town of Novi. When stage coaches rolled out of Detroit there were designated stopping points where passengers could alight or board the coach. The sixth stopping point had a simple trail sign ‘No VI’. Over time people who didn’t understand Roman numerals simply called the place NOVI.”

Fastidious spellers who want to become professional proofreaders and book editors should request the free information pack from NZIBS Proofreading Institute. Telephone 0800 801 994. One year of training

By Jack May

How a spelling error gave Cleveland its name

will enable Dip.Edit qualified people to work for publishers worldwide. Getting paid in NZ$, UK£ and US$ has its benefits.

“Being 12 hours ahead of Europe gives our proofreaders a huge advantage,” said Morris. “Publishing is a 24/7 industry. Our people get paid ‘overnight service’ rates even though they mostly work 10am to 2pm in New Zealand. This suits parents with children at school.”

Journalism training is also available.

Although many things have changed over the past 60 years at the Christchurch School of Music, the focus on fostering a lifelong

love of music has remained constant.Adult students are now an integral part

of the CSM community. Many of our adult students enjoy weekly instrumental, theory or vocal lessons, but we also offer fortnightly options or blocks of lessons to cater for students who are too busy to practise regularly. Our “Learn with a Friend” option is popular with adults who prefer learning alongside someone they already know.

At CSM, we encourage our students to play in an orchestra or ensemble. Playing with others is great fun and helps students to feel a part of our fabulous musical community. Our

range of Saturday and evening ensembles is extensive and varied, and include orchestras, rock bands, jazz combos, concert bands, wind ensembles and chamber music.

If affordability is an issue, CSM can provide discounts of up to 50 per cent through funding provided by the Canterbury Community Trust. Visit www.csm.org.nz or phone the office on 366 1711 to find out what we can offer you.

Adult Learners’ Week at the Risingholme Community Centre

Risingholme is proud to announce that the Risingholme pottery classes will host a group pottery exhibition during Adult Learners’

Week. The exhibition will feature SOUP can mugs, SOUP wall packets and other SOUP-related items.

The theme SOUP is inspired by an American fundraising idea where ceramic students make bowls and then have an exhibition to auction or sell them off.

The exhibition will be from September 5 to 7 at the Risingholme Community Centre.

Risingholme continues to offers a wide

range of short courses to upskill, sharpen the mind and meet new people and socialise. With a large pool of tutors, new courses are added through the year.

For more information on classes at Risingholme, Riccarton High School, Christchurch Girls’ High School, Shirley Boys’ High School and Hornby High School, contact the Risingholme Community Centre at 332 7359 or email [email protected].

Miracle weight

loss fruit

An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called Garcinia Cambogia from India and Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight

management and overall health. In fact many have found it to increase

fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. The Dr. Oz Show has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss.

Even without exercise and diet changes many have found it beneficial, although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet.

The extract of this amazing fruit is called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help

control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits.

It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid.

To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardized extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.

Further information and advice is available in store at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy. Phone: 388 5757. Call in and talk to our naturopath and medical herbalist or one of our helpful natural health advisers.

Glucomannan Fibre’s many health benefits

Glucomannan fibre is produced from the root of the Konjac plant. In Japan it is called the “broom of the intestines”. In the stomach, it

absorbs water and expands to form a bulky fibre. Then as it passes through the intestines and bowels, it has a gentle cleansing action helping remove waste material. It also appears to slow the absorption of sugar and cholesterol from the gut. In one four-week study of healthy men, glucomannan decreased total cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins, triglycerides as well as systolic blood pressure. Notably, triglycerides (a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease) were reduced by an amazing 23 per cent. Some studies have also shown glucomannan to help control sugar levels in diabetes as well as insulin sensitivity.

Glucomannan has been shown to significantly improve symptoms of constipation and decrease fecal transit time, helping keep the intestines and bowels functioning well. This by itself may considerably improve health and help prevent chronic health problems.

According to Dr Oz, glucomannan is “one of the best ways to control your hunger, the best appetite suppressant” and “nature’s skinny sponge”. If glucomannan is taken around 15 to 30 minutes before mealtimes with a large glass of water, it creates a sense of fullness by expanding to form a bulky fibre in the stomach. You feel full without feeling gassy or bloated. One study of obese individuals who took a total of two to four grams of glucomannan daily resulted in

significant weight loss, an average of 2.5kg over an eight-week period.

When using glucomannan, it is essential to drink sufficient water, at least 250ml per one to two grams of glucomannan as it could possibly gum up your digestive system and cause a blockage in the esophagus or intestine. One of the biggest reasons for constipation is dehydration so drinking more is a good thing. Also it is best to start with a low dose and work up over a week or so to see how your body handles it. As a precaution, do not take straight before going to bed. If used correctly it appears to be an extremely beneficial supplement with numerous health benefits.

Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.
