Call to get businesses back in city

ANDREW KING

Businesses and professional services should be heading back into the central city and not look to establish them-selves in the north-west suburbs.

This is the view of the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board which say the city council should not keep hand-ing out earthquake permits for business-es that relocated out of the central city.

After the February 2011 earthquake some businesses that were in the central city had to relocate into the suburbs to continue trading.

To do this they needed a special

temporary permit as the district plan prevents businesses from relocating into the suburbs.

City councillor Jamie Gough said this put strain on the suburban infrastruc-ture, particularly with parking.

“The car parking situation around there is a classic example of why big businesses needs to move back into the city centre,” he said.

“We should stop allowing so much flexibility to operate in suburbia.”

He said the temporary permits should be phased out earlier than the scheduled date of April next year.

“We are at the end of 2015, I don’t

think anyone can say we are in a imme-diate recovery stage anymore which is why those permits came about,” he said.

“We have an oversupply of offices in the city now, rents are decreasing while office quality is on the rise.

Over the last six months, 22 tempo-rary accommodation permits have been approved in the city.

Savills manager Ryan Geddes, who leases office space in the central city, said it was time for businesses to get back into the central city.

He said while the buildings were more expensive than pre-earthquake commercial premises, they were

better quality.“You are renting a brand-new build-

ing that is much more efficient than if you were renting a 20-year-old build-ing,” he said.

City council acting resource consents unit manager John Gibson said the city council is required to consider each temporary accommodation approval application on its merits.

“That includes whether the activity qualifies in terms of being a legitimate business existing prior to the earth-quakes that has subsequently been dis-placed as a result of the earthquakes,” he said.

‘We should stop allowing so much flexibility to operate in suburbia.’ Jamie Gough

A Bishopdale playground could be renamed to reflect the big, grey creature that has stood in it for years.

The playground on the cor-ner of Harewood Rd and Leac-roft St has a large grey elephant slide and has been known to lo-cals for generations as elephant park.

Fendalton-Waimairi Com-munity Board deputy chair-man David Cartwright will move a notice of motion at the board’s meeting today.

Mr Cartwright said locals have been calling it elephant park for a long time.

“We [the community board] have been talking about chang-ing the name for years,” he said.

He said that he called it el-ephant park when he was a kid and now his children do the same.

The playground is part of Bishopdale Park and if it is re-named it will not change the park’s name.

He said the expected time to work out if the change can be made is around three months Mr Cartwright said.

“This probably doesn’t hap-

pen all that often but I feel that it would be well received,” he said.

DETOURS IN PLACEEdgeware Rd between Sherborne and Bishop Sts is one way eastbound for about three months. There will be a short detour in place to get to Edgeware-St Albans businesses affected by these works. Bishop St is one way for southbound traffic between Edgeware Rd and Canon St from mid-October for about two months. Suggested detour is Ma-dras St. Carlton Mill Bridge repairs continue at the Harper Ave, Park Tce and Carlton Mill Rd intersection for about three more weeks. Two-way traffic remains but there are detours for pedestrians.

St John sent an ambulance and rapid response vehicle but were stood down as there was no one left in the vehicle. A fire communica-tions spokesman said they reported it to police who brought dogs to the scene to track the vehicles occupants. The St Albans fire station sent one fire engine to investigate power lines arching and discovered the car crash further down the road.

ANDREW KINGMona Vale Homestead is on sched-ule to be repaired by the end of June.

Work to repair the iconic Fendal-ton Rd landmark began on January 30 this year.

The building will be returned to the same condition it was in before the earthquakes with $2.8 million of repairs.

City council senior project manag-er Richie Moyle said the community

is “crying out” for the return of the popular venue.

“We have been working very hard to make sure we can keep our com-petion date for the new tenant in July 2016,” he said.

The property is listed with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and is a category one historic site.

Built in 1897 for Frederick Way-mouth but in 1905 heiress Annie Townend purchased the property and renamed it “Mona Vale” after her mother’s birthplace in Tasmania.

Mona Vale Gatehouse and the Mona Vale Lodge, which are also on the site, will also be repaired and strengthened.

DaviD LLoyD Joanna FieLDesI was born in Hampton Court and came to New

Zealand in 1973 in my early twenties, I lived in Golden Bay and soon became involved in the art and craft world. I was involved with a few shops and galleries around the country. I sold leatherwear, bags, belts and sandals. I eventually ended up in Canterbury. The ‘Artist Quarter’ was my main outlet where I

took orders for leather foot wear and also where I first met Angela and Stuart of the Little River Gallery.I am now into completely

different things. I love working with copper which is in some ways similar to leather. I still make patterns and copper is quite malleable, as is leather. Our Lives are a constant

rush to be somewhere or meet some important deadline. Allow time to follow a path that leads not to great wealth but to creative fulfilment.

Joanna Fieldes is a self-taught artist with a uniquely surreal vision of her country and culture, unencumbered by conventional modes of representation. Successfully exhibiting in solo, joint and group shows in public and private galleries around New Zealand since her first solo show in Auckland in 2004, Joanna has developed a distinctively resonant style of her own.“In this selection of oil paintings I have combined

New Zealand landscapes with flora, fauna and still life objects in ways that suggest alternative subtexts to the ubiquitous stories of our colonial past. These works explore, from my Pakeha perspective, the colonization of New Zealand. Central to my theme is the lasting impact that European explorers, early colonial settlers and those that followed have had on the indigenous environment and inhabitants of this corner of the South Pacific.

STOLEN VEHICLESPolice are seeking information about two stolen vehicles re-cently seen around Main North Rd. They are seeking information about a red Mitsubishi Leg-num station wagon registration BWK196 and a green Honda Odyssey registration DTW751. Any sightings or information phone police on 363 7400 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

TREE REMOVAL DECISIONThe Fendalton-Waimairi Com-munity Board will decide if it will remove two trees outside 63 Rossall St, Merivale. Residents want the two trees removed so they can build a vehicle crossing and improve the street frontage. The board will decide tonight if they will remove both trees and replace one at another position or just remove one tree. Both options will require costs to be borne by the applicant including the replacement planting.

NO STOPPING LINESThe Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will make a decision tonight if it will install no-stopping lines on the corner of Stackhouse Ave and Eastling St, Bishopdale. Seven new houses on the corner of the intersection and a new driveway are forcing residents and their visitors to park in the area between the intersection and the

newly constructed driveway. This is creating visibility issues for vehicles approaching this intersection. After city council staff had investigated the request it was determined the narrow constraints of the road and the close proximity to the intersection of Eastling St, mean if vehicles park in this location visibility would be compromised creating a road safety issue.

ROLLED CARSockburn and Harewood fire stations responded to reports of a car rolled in a driveway in Wilfrid St, Ilam, on Monday. A fire communication spokesman said when the crews arrived they found no one in the car.

STUDENT APPLIES FOR GRANTBurnside High School student Caitlin Hendren has applied for a grant of $400 from the Fendalton-Waimairi Commu-nity Board’s youth development fund. The money will be used in a study exchange trip to France from November 29 to January 12. The purpose of the exchange is to provide students the oppor-tunity to experience the French culture and improve their French language skills, particularly the most difficult aspects which are listening and reading. Students participating in the trip are bil-leted with a French host family and will be attending La Source school in Meudon, Paris.

The Marshland Rd Bridge up-grade has been given the go-ahead by city council.

The $7m upgrade of the bridge and road, which will in-clude new traffic signals, could start next year.

Work is likely to begin next February and will take 18 months.

Residents have welcomed the move, saying they have waited 10 years for the city council to make safer the “dangerous” in-tersection.

Spencerville Residents Asso-ciation president Jenny Knight said the group had started talk-ing to the city council 10 years ago about safety at the intersec-tion.

“We have been trying to get it upgraded for a while so it is good that it is going to happen as it is quite a dangerous piece of road,” she said.

But the city council report to a joint community board meeting said it was the growing subdivisions in the north of Christchurch that prompted the work.

Under the plan, vehicles will be able to turn right from Hawkins Rd onto Marshland Rd, or trav-el straight through from Lower Styx Rd onto Hawkins Rd.

Cycle lanes and footpaths across the bridge are also planned.

In a report to the community boards, project consultation leader Philippa Upton said it

would improve the safety of the intersection and increase capac-ity, allowing for growth in the Prestons and Highfield subdivi-sions.

She said people would be able to walk across the bridge from the Janet Stewart Reserve on one side to the Kaputone Con-fluence Conservation Park on the other.

UPGRADE: Marshland Rd bridge will be widened with work likely to begin in February.

Tinkering around at home with electronics has paid off with an engineering award for a Burnside High School student.

Nathan James was the overall male winner for his iDispense Master Bulk Bin Vs 2 design in the annual Bright Spark Awards in Auckland on Thursday.

The bin gives shoppers the power to choose how much product they want and at what cost, rather than using hand-held scoops currently available in supermarkets.

With his iDispense prototype, an app can be downloaded onto a shopper’s phone or the super-market could have an iPad in-store for the customer to weigh and price out how much their product has cost.

Nathan has been a finalist for the last five years and it is the second time he has entered his iDis-pense design, this year it won the category.

“This is my third prototype. My first was com-pletely different, the second was a bit better and this one is pretty much on track. I’ve got it down to about one gram accuracy which is pretty perfect,” he said.

Nathan came up with his design after going to the supermarket to buy trail mix for a tramp he was going on.

Skills Organisation general manager of strategic engagement Stephen Waters said the awards were a celebration of inventiveness.

“The awards give bright young Kiwis a platform to show their ingenuity and emerge as future leaders in the New Zealand electro-technology industry.”

Entrants walked away with a combined prize pool worth $10,000 and exposure in the technology indus-try as young and upcoming engineers, programmers and electricians.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students raised $1224 for Make a Wish New Zealand.

Year 7 and 8 students last Thursday held a market day to raise money for the char-ity.

It had a variety of stalls, games, and food all aimed at raising as much money as possible.

The money was raised in around three hours after a steady flow of teachers, students and parents came down to the school to show their support.

Make-A-Wish started in the United States in the state of Arizona in 1980 after Christopher Grecius’s wish was granted.

All his life, Christopher dreamed of becoming a

state trooper – and this wish was to become the inspiration for the largest wish-granting organisation in the world.

In early 1986, after what they had heard of Make a Wish in the United States, a small group of people met in Auckland to discuss the

formation of a New Zea-land team.

From this first meeting in Auckland a team decided to pursue the mission of granting wishes to sick children in New Zealand.

Later that year, Make a Wish New Zealand offi-cially opened in Auckland.

CHARITY: Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students Elise Mather and Harriet Lord sell hair ties to raise money for Make a Wish New Zealand.

Flame files

THE FLAME FILES BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICERIt’s been quite a quiet week so it’s time for a little lecture.

We have spent the last 25 years extolling the virtues of smoke alarms. We still do. And we’ll never know for sure the numbers of times a working

smoke alarm has saved a life. We do know that statistics tell

us we have fewer fire deaths now than then and we like to think smoke alarms are a signifi-cant part of that.

But smoke alarms only are just half of the story. Sleeping with bedroom doors closed is strongly recommended.

I know of two incidents where young children have died where I am absolutely certain they would have survived the inci-dent by having the bedroom door shut.

On hearing a smoke alarm somewhere in the house and touching the closed door you will know if it is dangerously

hot on the other side. If the door is cool, kneeling or

bending and cracking the door will ensure if there is smoke, if so it is likely to be above your head. If the way is clear you go and investigate. It might be no more than toast cooking.

A second way out, via the window needs to be planned for.

Once out you should let every-one in the house know there is danger by shouting and banging.

Having a meeting place means all occupants will be aware each other is safe. And phoning 111 from that safe place or the neighbour’s finishes it all.

It’s called a home escape plan. Have one!

Do you have a home escape plan?

pupils have showcased what they love to do with this year’s passion projects.

The year 8 girls have worked all year on a project which they are extremely passionate about.

It is a three-term explora-tion that culminates in an exhibition for fellow stu-dents, families and the wider community.

Selwyn House spokes-man John Garlick said that passion-based learning “in a nutshell” is when pupils create their learning pathway based on their own passions.

“Each pupil must chose their own passion project and select a mentor to work with, to help guide them through the project and keep on track,” he said.

“Each step of the process is recorded in a learning jour-nal. The end result is their own product or service.”

Mr Garlick said the major benefits that roll out of this include, ownership, motiva-tion and engagement.

“The main attributes and skills developed include, curiosity, adaptability, criti-cal thinking, self-regulation, problem solving, resilience,

communication skills and lifelong learning,” he said.

The projects covered a wide range of different ac-tivities and services includ-ing – omelettes, handmade poppies, horse riding, diving, interior design, movie mak-ing, dance, photography, photographic blocks, horse jumping, team building, sail-ing, learning to sign, creating a newspaper, bubbles, an arcade machine, food, pets, dog fashion accessories, conservation and nature, cos-tume hire, sporting activities, crafts, a music video and forensic science.

ENVIRONMENTAL: Paige Causer spent time learning how to eradicate pests to protect New Zealand’s diverse bird species.

Passion projects from Selwyn House

PAPER PRODUCTION: One pupil explored how to put a newspaper together.

ALL THE GEAR: Georgina Scott showed some of the equipment used by forensic scientists.

Forensic science has always interested Georgina Scott and now she has written a book as part of a school project.

The 12-year-old Selwyn House School pupil, of Redwood, spent most of this year re-searching and compiling information on forensic science to present as her “passion project”.

Speaking with experts in forensics, Georgina was able to put together an interactive crime scene.

“People could walk through the display getting information then interact with it by getting their finger prints taken or swabbing for DNA.”

Part of the criteria for the

project was to produce something pupils are passionate about.

“I wrote a children’s book as my product,” Georgina said.

She wants to distribute her book around a few schools in the area

to show others her research.Georgina said it is dif-

ficult to explain all the technical side of forensic science to her friends.

“I just tell them it is how you catch a

killer,” Georgina said.

“The most interesting thing

I found out was that DNA can transfer through talking,” Geor-gina said.

“You have to wear three layers of clothing to prevent DNA from getting on the evidence.”

Set out to take Catholic educationour PEOPLE

Hi Jo. Tell us how long you have been a principal for?

I have been a principal for eight years.

What made you want to get into teaching? I just enjoy making a difference for

children and families. What was it like when you first got

into teaching? It was 30 years ago

when I started. It was exciting.

Teaching was something I have always wanted to do. It was as far back as I can remember, it has always been on the radar.

What is your favourite thing about

being a principal?Wanting to be a principal is wanting to

coach and mentor other teachers to be the best they can be for the pupils. I try to be really visible in the classrooms and provide professional learning development. And of course staying ahead of what is considered to be best practice in education.

Where was your first job?It was in Favona Primary School in

Marare in South Auckland. It was pretty interesting. It was a really good first placement and it taught me a lot about behaviour management.

Have you always taught at primary schools?

I have always taught in primary schools. I do not have much desire to teach high school students.

What was your first day at school like as a teacher?

It is exciting when you get your own class and be able to run your own pro-grammes. It is something that everyone looks forward to. The ability to make your own education plan is great.

Do you remember your first day as a kid?

I started school in Malaysia. My dad

was in the army. We moved around quite frequently and changed schools a lot. It made me more confident in meeting new people. You had to keep starting again so it built good social skills.

How many countries did you move around?

Just Malaysia, then the rest of the time we moved around New Zealand. Christ-church is my favourite so far. We stopped moving when I hit high school. I went to Villa Maria College.

What are you looking forward to at St Francis?

It is kind of a unique opportunity. There is not many that get to start at a new school. It is nice to start like that, developing the school and bringing two communities together will be a challenge but a positive challenge.

The school is a merger between St Paul’s School and Our Lady of Fatima School, have you ever worked in a merged school before?

No I haven’t. We are constantly talking with the board and looking to the future.

Have you been involved with the development of the new school?

Jo Earl will be the first principal at the newly formed St Francis of Assisi School in Mairehau. She speaks with Andrew King about why she is a principal, working in Catholic schools and what she wants to achieve in her new position

Jo Earl

NEW PRINCIPAL: Jo Earl will be the first principal at the new Catholic school.

CHRISTCHURCH CITY CHORUS OF SWEET ADELINES

Christchurch City Chorus of Sweet Adelines is busy preparing for its Christmas per-formances at shopping malls, retirement homes, and its annual Christmas show which is being held at Nut Point, West Melton, on December 5 at 2pm. This “a cappella”, fun loving, group is always looking for ladies who love to

sing, and especially ones who sing alto. If you are inter-ested, head along to Cashmere High School Performing Arts Auditorium (Barrington St entrance), any Wednesday night at 7pm and have a sing with them.

EASTENDERS WALKING CLUB

The Eastenders Walking Club are a social walking club. It meets once a week on a Monday morning. Members walk all around the city and around the hills. Anyone can join in, and they currently have about 45 members. It depends on the weather and what people are doing on the day, but it generally has between 15 and 20 people on every walk.

The club has been open for around 20 years. It has different meeting places every week, and have a programme which tells it where members will walk each week. This week they will meet at The Princess Margaret Hospital, and will be walking up the hills and around the Ellis track.

The club is very social, and is always looking for more members. For more informa-tion, email Barbara: [email protected]

I have been involved in refur-bished blocks before. But noth-ing like this. I am very hands-on now. Not with the actual construction but the choosing of furniture and basically every-thing you can think of.

Did you grow up in Christ-church?

I was born in South Auckland. I have two brothers and three sisters. They are all in Christ-church except for one who is somewhere else in the South Island.

I was the only one who got

into education.Do you have kids yourself?I do, I have two but they are

now adults. What do they do?George is an electrician, and

Megan is a court registry officer.Did you ever teach your kids

at school?No I didn’t teach them [at

school] while they were growing up.

Why do you want to be the principal of a Catholic school?

I have been working in Catho-lic schools for the last 12 years.

You have to be Catholic to be a principal of a Catholic school. It is a really holistic approach to teach-ing. It is a requirement to have 60 per cent of teachers to be Catholic.

What do you will you bring to the table as principal?

One goal is to bring the two communities together, working and thinking as one. I would like to see it [the school] at the fore-front of Catholic education. I have some ideas about how to do it but not ready to share them.

I guess we will just have to wait and see, thanks Jo.

Customers get certainty on ILV land damageMost of the 8,500 green zone customers who last year received a letter from EQC that their property potentially has Increased Liquefaction Vulnerability (ILV) land damage will be contacted in the next two months to confirm whether or not this is the case.

“The first qualification packs have gone out this week and we expect to give certainty to all affected customers by early next year at the latest”, EQC Head of Canterbury Land, Keith Land says.

Settling claims for ILV land damage is a world first and has involved a significant amount of geotechnical research and engineering assessments by EQC’s engineers Tonkin and Taylor.

“We acknowledge it’s taken time to get to this stage and we would like to thank our customers for their patience. We’re confident all the work that has been done to date has contributed to a robust assessment process which should give homeowners confidence that all properties have been assessed fairly and consistently,” Mr Land says.

The engineering assessment methodology, which was developed by Tonkin and Taylor, was peer reviewed by an independent expert review panel, comprising world-leading liquefaction researchers.

EQC will use a two-stage approach to advise customers what EQC’s ILV settlement decision is for their property. This reflects feedback received from customers who said they want to hear from EQC as soon as relevant information about their properties becomes available.

“The next stage of the process will be to send those customers whose properties do qualify a settlement pack, with detailed information on the

basis of the settlement and payment amount. The settlement packs will be sent out throughout 2016,” Mr Land says.

EQC will cash settle ILV land damage and not manage the repair of ILV land, which is in line with how EQC has settled claims for other types of land damage caused by the Canterbury earthquakes.

Cash settlements for ILV land damage will be based on one of two approaches: cost of repair or the reduction in market value of the property due to ILV land damage, also called Diminution of Value (DOV).

“How exactly it’s going to look in terms of the settlement approaches and the amount for each of the qualifying properties is something we are working through now,” Mr Land says.

Later this year and early next year EQC is holding a number of community meetings around Christchurch for homeowners who receive confirmation from EQC about whether or not their property has ILV land damage.

“We want customers to have an opportunity to hear from us and our engineering advisers Tonkin and Taylor face-to-face, so that they can get a good understanding of what‘s been involved in making the qualification decision for their property,” Mr Land says.

More information about the meetings and ILV land damage in general, including a comprehensive list of questions and answers, can be found on the EQC website at www.eqc.govt.nz/ILV.

COMMUNITY MEETINGS ON ILV LAND DAMAGEEQC is holding community meetings for homeowners who have been advised whether or not their property qualifies for Increased Liquefaction Vulnerability (ILV) land damage. EQC Head of Canterbury Land, Keith Land and EQC’s engineers Tonkin and Taylor will present.

Tuesday 17 November, 10am South New Brighton Community Hall, 74 Beatty Street

Monday 23 November, 7pm Burwood Christian Centre, 52 Bassett Street

Tuesday 24 November, 10am Parkview Community Lounge, 75 Queenspark Drive, Parklands

Thursday 26 November, 10am North New Brighton War Memorial Hall and Community Centre, 93 Marine Parade

Friday 27 November, 7pm Beulah Church, 140 Springfield Road, St Albans

Monday 30 November, 7pm Burwood Christian Centre, 52 Bassett Street

Further meetings will be held in December and January 2016. Visit www.eqc.govt.nz/ilv or phone 0800 326 243 to register or for more information.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERSHow does a property qualify as having ILV land damage?

To qualify for ILV land damage, a property must meet engineering criteria which confirms the insured land does not only have material vulnerability to liquefaction damage after the Canterbury earthquakes but the vulnerability has also materially increased as a result of ground surface subsidence of the land caused by the Canterbury earthquakes. In addition, the increase in liquefaction vulnerability must have caused a reduction in the market value of the property.

It is possible a property experienced significant liquefaction induced damage as a result of the earthquakes but will not qualify for ILV land damage. A property will only qualify for ILV where subsidence to the insured land has caused it to become materially more vulnerable to liquefaction. If the insured land was already prone to liquefaction before the earthquake and the vulnerability has not materially changed, it won’t qualify.

What information was used for engineering assessments of a property?

The qualification decisions are based on a number of sources of information, such as ground surface levels derived from aerial surveys (LiDAR), groundwater levels monitored through around 1,000 wells, and soil characteristics data from extensive geotechnical investigations involving 18,000 Cone Penetrometer Tests (CPTs), 4,000 boreholes, and 6,000 laboratory tests.

How will you decide which properties will have their settlement based on DOV or on repair cost?

EQC’s general preference is to settle ILV claims based on the repair cost together with any DOV of the insured land that is not remediated by the repair methodology. In general, EQC will adopt a repair methodology that remediates the land damage under and immediately around the house in line with the MBIE Guidance. This means there will be an area of the insured land that will not be remediated so the settlement may include an amount to reflect any DOV for this area.

The nature of ILV land damage means that a repair methodology may not be technically feasible; able to be lawfully undertaken; or able to be undertaken, given the high costs and practicality of making the repairs. In these circumstances, EQC will settle the ILV land damage based on DOV.

Where a property with ILV land damage has been sold since the earthquakes, the settlement will also be based on DOV.

EQC may settle ILV land damage based on the repair costs where a repair methodology is available and the customer intends to undertake the repair of the land within a reasonable period of time using that methodology. When determining whether there is a repair methodology for a particular property, EQC will consider several factors, including whether it would be recommended by a prudent engineering advisor and whether it could be practically carried out on the property.

The ILV Policy outlines how EQC will decide between repair or DOV settlement for a property and a copy of the Policy can be found on EQC website at www.eqc.govt.nz/ILV.

Increased Liquefaction Vulnerability (ILV) land damage – what it is and how a property qualifies for it

A seminar for homeowners who last year heard from EQC that their property potentially has ILV land damage and who will receive confirmation late this year or early next year whether or not they have this type of land damage.

This seminar will cover what ILV land damage is, how a property qualifies for this type of land damage that has never before in the world been recognised as insured damage, and next steps for qualifying properties.

Keith Land, EQC Head of Canterbury Land, and EQC’s engineers Tonkin+Taylor will present.

12 November and 26 November

Book a 30 minute session between 1 and 4pm by calling 0800 777 482

Book your 30 minute session with the Residential Advisory Service

RAS is holding free advice sessions where you have the opportunity to meet with one of RAS Independent Advisors who are all qualified lawyers. You can briefly discuss your situation, hear how the service may be able to assist you, and ask questions about your rebuild or repair process. With Show Week just around the corner and Christmas hot on its heels, there’s plenty of opportunity to

celebrate this summer. Just like with clothing, there are some great new trends to look out for when it comes to a seasonal tipple.

Owner of Super Liquor Ilam on Waimari Road, Belinda Symon has some advice to share so that our festive table will the height of fashion.

“Rosés are very popular, both still and sparkling,” she explains. “There are some

fantastic new varieties coming out. We stock a huge range, and there’s something for every palate.” This year, one of the old favourites has been given a new twist. Baileys Original Irish Cream is a traditional ‘must have’ at this time of year, and they have brought out a new chocolate variety, which is so yummy that it’s flying off the shelves. Belinda recommends stocking up soon as it’s currently on special.

Miniature brandies and whiskeys for Christmas cakes and puddings will never go out of style, and for a perfect present, gift baskets will soon be available. Find them at 213 Waimairi Road, Ilam or ring 03 358 5487.

Christmas at IlamIlam Super Liquor - What’s Hot for Xmas Drinks

Trends go out of style, and a gorgeous watch is an ageless gift. Whether you want to say “I love you” or mark a special occasion,

a watch is something that stands the test of time.

This Christmas, the team at Ilam Watchmakers know that classics as well as funky, modern styles are hot-ticket items.

That’s why they are bringing in something for everyone, from the ultra hip Ice-Watch through the practicality and style of Casio to Boccia’s stunning titanium pieces. Astina’s dainty watches make perfect accessories and Swiss-made Olympic watches are always timeless. Their advice is that there’s a watch for all ages and tastes, so why not turn to a traditional favourite and give a watch this festive season.

Ilam Watchmakers - watches for Christmas

Paper Tree Tower Junction has gained a reputation for offering the greatest value on books,

greeting cards and art supplies. For several year the Tower Junction

Paper Tree has sourced its books from all parts of the globe. This enables it to offer a huge variety at the lowest possible prices. Paper Tree is the only independent retailer currently offering this format. This is a real point of difference, resulting in Paper Tree becoming Canterbury’s number one discount offer, greeting cards and art supplies.

This popularity has seen the introduction of two exciting new stores. One is located at Northwood Supa Centre in Belfast, the other is situated at the New World shopping complex at St Martins.

Paper Tree and New Zealand Post have worked closely in establishing a unique offer. The clientele at both New Zealand Post and Paper Tree complement each other perfectly.

All three sites will offer New Zealand Post | Kiwi Bank transactional services, seven days a week, beginning 1st November.

New Zealand Post and Paper Tree fit “hand in glove” as a premier retail offer. Both put a large emphasis on service, quality of product, and price.

MURRAY WILLIAMS

Those travelling along Hare-wood Rd will be aware that there are major changes affecting the Sanitarium site.

A large part of the complex that several generations have as-sociated with the manufacture of Marmite and Weet-Bix, is being cleared to allow the construction of a Mitre 10 megastore.

This will be accomplished in two stages; the current project will provide a 7788 sq m retail warehouse and a 1900 sq m gar-den centre as well as car parking and vehicle access.

Stage 2, including the demoli-tion of the remaining portion of the Sanitarium factory, will start in 2019.

As a condition of the consent required to redevelop this site, the new owners agreed to retain a part of the famous landscaping behind the original art deco ma-sonry fence fronting onto Hare-wood Rd.

These gardens were first de-signed in 1931 and the company had always maintained them to a high standard. Thus at least one link to the past will be preserved.

Since 2004, another facility, the fountain, had become a no-table feature that will also be re-tained.

Although relatively recent on

this site, the fountain has a long history. It is part of the Georgian/Victorian tradition of cast and wrought iron structures ranging from bridges to decorative gates produced in Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries.

The date of manufacture of this example is not known; in her book Sanitarium, Dianne Morris recalls that its components were purchased by agents of Maison Rouge, a Christchurch garden architectural firm, in a ‘field sale’ on the Isle of Wight.

In 2003 the parts were reas-sembled on its present site and Sanitarium staff devised and installed the pumping system to give a second life to a fine ex-ample of Victorian design and engineering.

Closer examination reveals

some similarities to the Peacock fountain in the Christchurch Bo-tanic gardens.

The latter is also a Coalbrook-dale product but of a much grander scale and is more exu-berant in its colour scheme.

Currently the Sanitarium in-stallation is not operating and while there is nothing as forlorn as a fountain that is not operat-ing, we can look forward to the day when the display will be able to be enjoyed again.

Whether we will have to wait until the completion of the Mitre 10 project is not known.

The illustration shows the cur-rent situation with the temporary contractor’s fence indicating the division of the area that is being redeveloped and the portion that will remain for the pleasure of the community.

Thought you’ve got a bargain online and then its never arrived or taken forever?

Sadly, this is a familiar scenario for us. Recently Lisa contacted us after the tickets she ordered for a jazz concert didn’t arrive until after the performance.

Unfortunately, these sorts of issues have often been very dif-ficult to resolve, with the seller blaming the courier and the cou-rier company blaming the seller with the poor consumer stuck in the middle.

The courier company has obligations under the Consumer Guarantees Act to provide their service with reasonable care and skill, which should include timely delivery of goods.

In this example (as in many other cases) the courier company claimed that the delay in the delivery of Lisa’s tickets was outside of their control, leav-ing Lisa with few options apart from taking them to the Disputes Tribunal.

The good news is that this is that from the June 17, 2014, changes to the Consumer Guarantees Act came into place which means that consumers

are not left stuck in the middle between the supplier and the courier company.

One of the key changes is a new guarantee of delivery, which means that when a supplier is responsible for arranging the delivery of goods then they must ensure that the goods reach the consumer in the agreed time period (or a reasonable time if no time period was agreed).

As with all the protections provided by the Consumer Guarantees Act, this guarantee only applies to goods bought for personal use, from a trader based in New Zealand (so not for over-seas purchases or private sales).

The upshot of all of this is that if Lisa had this problem after the June 17, 2014, then she could have gone directly to the seller of the ticket (a ticket company), who would have had to sort out the problem and refund Lisa’s ticket (and potentially any other costs she incurred due to the late delivery).

To talk to one of our team about a consumer issue or to inquire about Volunteering for Citizens Advice Bureau phone 0800 367 222.

JEREMY TAURI

We don’t have flying cars or hover-boards yet but If you’re a small busi-ness looking to take advantage of the current economic climate embracing technology is going to help you get sales and profits up faster.

Back to the Future day was held last week — the day Marty McFly travelled to in the cult movie from the 1980s.

It is clear that businesses of 30 years ago might have a hard time recognising a lot of the processes of their modern counterparts.

Surveys show more than half of businesses agree that using technol-ogy to streamline systems will assist

to save time and money. If you’re looking at what to do with

tech here are several tips to move you back to the future. Upgrade your PCs.

I’m surprised at how many people still have some dusty old PC.

If it’s more than two years old replace it. For less than $1000 you can get something that can run things much faster.

You shouldn’t have to turn on your PC and have time to make a coffee for it to work.

Be sure to invest in a PC that you can add a second screen for multi-tasking.

Get to the cloud. I’ve had no issues with cloud software, I also like the trial options offered and the ability to

turn off the subscription if I’m not us-ing it. Get an online presence.

Google is your friend and po-tentially a referrer of clients, so is Facebook.

An online presence can help you interact with your customers and build your business following.

Payment systems are now mobile. You can take card payments through your mobile device using attachments from banks and pay services.

If you can invoice and be paid on the spot, there’s no down-time chas-ing payments later.

Granted, I’m not offering you au-tolacing shoes, but give these things a go and you’ll enough time to do it yourself.

Invest in technology to boost profits

STREAMLINE: Use two or more computer screens for multitasking.

While most people know what lawyers and accountants do, awareness of the financial plan-ning profession is low.

This probably has something to do there are very few certified financial planners.

They number in the hundreds rather than the thousands. While there are often very compel-ling reasons to use a lawyer (for

example, the sale or purchase of a property) or an accountant (for example, to prepare tax returns), the use of a financial planner is seen to be an optional extra.

This is unfortunate, as a good financial planner has the power to make dramatic, last-ing improvements to financial outcomes for even the most ordinary of people.

Many of us suffer from in-formation overload and there is

certainly no shortage of informa-tion on financial matters.

The problem is that every-body’s financial situation is unique and often complex and it’s not that easy to form person-alised strategies from general information. This is where a financial planner adds value.

A good financial planner will gather together information on your current financial situation, your goals, your attitudes to-

wards investment risk and return and your family circumstances.

From all that they’ll distil the key strategies to enable you to get the most out of life. While there may be some product recommendations included in a financial plan, the focus is not on selling product but on imple-menting the strategies.

These could include better money management, debt reduc-tion, short and long term sav-

ings, investment, risk manage-ment and estate planning.

Often there are trigger points for people seeking advice, such as a new relationship, the sale of a property or business, an inheri-tance, or impending retirement.

However, anybody, at any stage of life, can benefit from a financial plan. You can find a nationwide list of Certified Financial Planners at www.ifa.org.nz.

Even small fry can use a financial planner

Why work with us for your earthquake repairs, renovation, alteration or new build?

We engaged Steve from Probuild NZ to complete our earthquake repair work on our 1920’s villa in St Albans. Steve and the team were available through the entire process and passed on great tips and information from dealing with EQC assessors and then through the entire repair schedule. The repairs started and finished on time and have been completed to a great standard. We are delighted with how the repairs and the additional upgrades to the bathroom and the kitchen have turned out.We would have no hesitation in recommending Steve from ProBuild to complete any work in the future.

The three pharmacists also offer a range of other services for customers. They include free blood tests for patients that are taking warfarin, and the provision of medication blister packs.

“These are a big part of our service,” says Steve. “They are very useful for helping people remember to take their medications at the right time.”

In addition, the pharmacists offer emergency contraception and are qualified to supply treatment for minor bladder infections in women.

“We also have a good range of health supplements and vitamins, and our staff

are always happy to offer friendly advice to customers about these products. I encourage the staff to engage with people as that’s an important aspect of our role in being part of the community,” Steve says.

QE11 Pharmacy stocks the DB (Designer Brand) cosmetic range, which offers quality cosmetics at very affordable price, as well as sun protection and first aid products. There is also an attractive selection of gift items, and now is a good time to start shopping for Christmas.

New customers are welcome, says Steve, and existing customers will find familiar faces among the eight staff in store at QE11 Pharmacy, 251 Travis Rd, North New Brighton. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm.

Now under the joint ownership of Steve Hanmer who had been in partnership with Don, and Simon Bensley who has

returned to the pharmacy, QE11 Pharmacy

Synonymous with minimalist construction, JNBY’s spring/summer 2015-2016 collections

are brimming with stunning foundation and statement pieces that are guaranteed to breathe new life into any wardrobe.

Unique architectural details, such as asymmetrical seams and hemlines, and unexpected darting and gathering of fabric, give each hand-crafted garment a fresh, yet enduring style,

which people will return to again and again, year after year.

Taking women effortlessly from work to play, day to night,

simple silhouettes in luxurious natural fabrics, like silk, chiffon,

linen and cotton, drape beautifully over the human form and wear well, and feel like a second skin, allowing the wearer’s inner beauty to shine through.

Icy whites star this season with a neutral palette of cream, ivory and warm mocha, giving way to an earthy moss colour and khaki. Inky blacks are softened with smoky charcoal and soft grey, while muted teal, brilliant blue, canary yellow and bold red add a splash

of colour to enliven earthy tones and basic blacks.

Tailored tuxedo jackets and blazers hang elegantly off the body, while tunics, dresses and skirts fall mostly below the knee or skim the ankles in light, billowy fabrics. Cropped pants are key, as are relaxed fit, full-length trousers, which look smart when teamed with a tailored ‘boy’ shirt or worn under one of this season’s many tunics.

Transitioning from winter to summer is simple with this season’s easy-to-wear, midi-length cardigan. With side pockets and button detailing on the cuff, the cardigan’s luxurious, soft cotton hangs beautifully off the body and keeps a chilly breeze at bay. Layered over dresses, tunics and trousers, the midi-length cardigan epitomises JBNY’s uncomplicated

Timeless style for the modern woman

Food & WineAlways entertained at SileniE

VERYnow and again I’masked to take visitors toHawke’s Bay onwinetours and I enjoy these

for reasons aplenty. The first isthat I’ll leap at any opportunityto show off the spectacular placewhere I was born, raised and liveto anyone. Any time. The second is that taking

people onwine tours givesme agreat excuse to get away fromthe office, away frommy deskand out into the wide worldwhere it all happens, and by thatI mean the cellar doors. Onelittle wine tasting oasis that Ialways try to call into is Sileni

Estate onMaraekakaho Road, inthemiddle of the Bridge PaWinegrowing district— becauseyes, the wines are quality, butit’s how they run their cellardoor that really spinsmywheels. Anne Boustead has beenthe cellar doormanager foraeons and she and her team arebrilliant at making you feel

immediately welcome nomatterhow busy they are. I can’t stresshow important it is to beacknowledged as soon as youwalk in the door— I’ve lostcount of howmany times I’ve feltso bored and ignored at cellardoors around the country’s wineregions because no one has said“Hi guys, great to see you! I’mjust working through this group— but here’s a wee something tosip while youwait and I’ll bewith you in a tick”. But you’llnever have that issue at Sileni. They know thewines intimately;they’re always entertaining andmost importantly— are great

educators. So it’s no surprise tome to hear they claimed theirfourth Cellar Door of the Yeartitle at the Hawke’s Bay A&PBayleysWine Awards held onOctober 20. “We’re utterlythrilled with the win,” saidAnne. “We have a great teamhere at our cellar door andeveryone loves their job.Whenyou love your product and youlove what you do, you can’t helpbut provide a great experience.”It topped off an impressive

evening for Sileni, who also tookhome the Trophy for “ChampionPinot Noir” for their 2014Exceptional Vintage Pinot Noir.

Krill Oil - number 1 for good health

The secret is, therefore, the phospholipid and Astaxanthin

content rather than just the amount of krill oil in the soft gel capsule.

All our body cell membranes are made up of phospholipids, exactly the same phospholipids as available in krill oil.

These phospholipids available in krill are its big advantage over fish oil that is in a triglyceride form and that must be converted by our liver to phospholipid form to be able to have benefits to our cell membranes. This conversion of triglycerides to phospholipids is inefficient and a much larger dose of fish oil is needed for the same benefits as a much smaller dose of krill oil. Some research has shown krill oil to be 48 times more potent than fish oil. Another benefit of krill oil is it contains astaxanthin, one of the most potent antioxidants known.

Recent research shows krill oil can lower your risk for cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, obesity and Type 2 diabetes, and may lessen a variety of brain and mental disorders including autism and dyslexia, Parkinson’s and some forms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Krill oil can help normalise high blood pressure by reducing inflammation of

the blood vessels and improving blood quality. It is also highly effective at reducing high cholesterol levels, increasing HDL cholesterol, reducing triglycerides (a damaging blood fat), reducing C-reactive protein and reducing other damaging blood factors. It can also reduce dangerous fat levels in the liver and heart.

Krill oil is also a natural anti-inflammatory and can help reduce pain, improve joint function and reduce symptoms of arthritis.

The secret is, therefore, the phospholipid and astaxanthin content rather than just the amount of krill oil in the soft gel capsule. Some brands have very low levels of these two important compounds and may not even list them on the label.

For the maximum nutritional benefit, we are happy to help you choose a quality product with effective amounts of phospholipids and astaxanthin, and at a realistic price. Talk to our natural health advisers today at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, phone 388 5757.
