ANDREW KING

People boozing on a park bench in Edgeware Village, as early as 8am in some cases, is causing problems for businesses in the area.

A park bench outside the car park of SuperValue Edgeware has become a hang out for drink-ers with some becoming aggres-sive when asked to move on by businesses.

Butcher shop Peter Timb’s owner David Timbs said the drinkers, mainly middle-aged

men, are there most days.He said the men ask for money

from customers, turning people off from going into the business-es in Edgeware.

SuperValue Edgeware assistant store manager Guri Sidhu said he sees people drinking on the bench regularly.

“We have had people in here as early as 8am already drunk want-ed to get alcohol . . . we don’t sell to intoxicated people.”

Papanui police sergeant Bren-don Strieker said they were aware of the problem.

He said police were working to get cameras installed in the area.

The problem has reached the Shirley-Papanui Community Board after businesses com-plained to chairman Mike David-son.

But at Wednesday’s meeting, city councillor Ali Jones said it was not a matter for the board or

the city council to deal with but a police problem.

“Being intimidating or drunk in public is an offence and should be left with police to deal with,” she said.

Cr Jones said she visits the area up to three times a day and had not noticed it as a problem.

City councillor Pauline Cotter said she did not want to see an alcohol ban in the area because there were already a few in the city and she does not want a “nanny state”.

The board said city council

staff would still look into the is-sue and report back.

Mr Timbs said a few weeks ago staff had to phone the am-bulance for a person who was known to drink at the bench.

“A couple of weeks ago one collapsed and we had to call an ambulance.”

Mr Timbs didn’t know the rea-son why the man fainted but said “he couldn’t just lie there”.

Sergeant Strieker said that anyone who feels intimidated by this kind of behaviour should not hesitate to phone the police.

Fendalton looks like it will retain its PostShop, but lose its Kiwibank and post box services.

New Zealand Post has confirmed that the Kiwibank, located on Memorial Ave, will have to close, after it failed to find a new home for the branch. The lease on the building runs out this Friday.

While postal services have been spared, they will not be available over the busy

Christmas period.New Zealand Post said it is in

the final stages of negotiations with the city council to relocate the postal services 600m down the road, to the Fendalton Service Centre, in February next year. The service centre shares a building with the Fendalton Library on the corner of Clyde and Jeffreys Rds.

The post boxes will be moved to Riccarton PostShop.

Details are expected to be finalised by next month.

Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board chairwoman Val Carter said it was a shame postal services would not be open over Christmas, but it was better than having no postal services at all.

Hamilton Otara Residents Association chairman Doug Archbold said the city council deserved a “bouquet” for its efforts.

“I am really pleased that the council has put its hand up for the community,” he said.

“It will probably encourage more people to use the library. I am an avid reader and will use the library more, as I will go there more often.”

Mr Archbold hoped the staff would be retained, as they provided excellent service and a good amount of “banter”.

New Zealand Post general manager for retail distribution Tracey Berry said customers could use the Riccarton, Ilam, or Merivale PostShops while the services were being shifted.

CYCLEWAY SESSIONPaparoa St School will host a drop-in session for the Papanui Parallel Cycleway today. The session will run from 4-6.30pm at 120 Paparoa St. Those that are interested in looking at that proposed plan or have con-cerns can drop in and speak with city council staff.

DETOURS IN PLACEEdgeware Rd will be one way for three months. The stretch between Sherborne and Madras Sts, will be reduced to one lane head-ing east. Bishop St is closed between Edgeware Rd and Canon St for two more weeks. Canon St between Bishop St and Barbados St will be one way for the next month.

PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENTCraighead Reserve on Northcote Rd, will have $75,000 worth of new playground equipment. The Shirley-Papanui Communi-ty Board approved the work in its meeting last Mon-day. Ground work for the project is due to start before Christmas. The board had one amendment to the plan presented to them which was to change a swing into a toddler swing seat.

St Andrew’s College rector Christine Leighton talks about the retirement of popular teacher Alister Newton.

Alister Newton is leaving after 44 years’ service to St Andrew’s College and by my calculation that means he has been known by more than 7000 students.

Alister has a legendary reputation for knowing not only every student but also for knowing who their father, or grandfather is. He is truly a man who makes connections count.

We posted on our alumni Facebook page that Alister was retiring and it has attract-ed hundreds of likes and com-ments from former students all sharing their special memories of him.

Alister is someone who has made these personal connec-tions with so many students and colleagues over the 44 years, he will be remembered with much respect as someone who cares about people and the college.

Alister’s huge contribution as a teacher, geography head of department, senior master, coach of the rugby first 15 and cricket first 11, head of operations and deputy head of the secondary school has been incredible.

Somehow he has been able to combine that approachable,

friendly caring warmth, with a respect that means the students know not to mess with him!

I’m sure in a school our size this can be a huge challenge at times.

Alister is an amazing or-ganiser, and has a calm and considerate approach and a capacity to work exceptionally hard.

Boy racers will no longer be able to tear up Burnside Park from next month.

Funding for a fence to stop cars getting access onto the playing fields has been approved by the city council and is likely to be installed next month.

Cars have ripped up the sports fields so badly that football and cricket training sometimes had to be cancelled.

Access was gained through a gap between the trees near Memorial Ave – but now a fence will go in.

Around $20,000 a year is spent maintaining the cricket blocks, and the vandals could sometimes do more than $1000 of damage.

A city council report present-ed to the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board last week said staff were contracting out the work with a completion date of next month.

Chairwoman Val Carter said it was great to get the project under way.

Football club FC 2011 chief

executive Eddie Cropley was delighted with the result.

“It is good to see some action being taken to stop any future damage.

“It won’t change much around the park or have any impact on the residents but it will mean the pitches and fields ripped up by cars,” Ms Carter said.

Meanwhile, fitness trail equip-ment for stage one and two in the park have been purchased.

The city council will install

the equipment next month and it includes a sit up bench, push up bars, gym rings, stepper, chin up bars and a vertical ladder.

The Commodore Airport Hotel donated $15,000 towards the project and the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board put $2717 for station one and $11,322 for station two from its discretionary fund.

There will be four fitness sta-tions around the park at a total cost of around $75,000.

UPGRADES: Burnside Park will have a fence installed to protect the sports fields from being ripped up by cars.

PARKING RESTRICTIONS APPROVEDNew parking restrictions for five parks was approved by the Shirley-Papanui Com-munity Board on Wednesday. The restrictions will be for 1hr parking from the intersection of Edgeware Rd and Cranford St, on the northern side of Edge-ware Rd. The rules will be in place Monday to Friday from 8am-6pm. City council staff recommended 30min parking but the board felt that 1hr suited the area better. The cost of installing the signs is $450.

FUNDING GRANTEDBurnside High School student Eleanor Phillips has been granted $300 towards the costs of competing in the Pacific School Games in Adelaide from November 21-29. Eleanor has been selected to represent New Zealand at the games. She will be competing in the 1m and 3m springboard events as well as the platform and synchronised events. The funding came from the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board’s youth development fund.

SAWDUST FIREA smouldering sawdust heapat Canterbury Landscape Supplies on Main North Rd sparked a callout for the Brooklands Vol-unteer Fire Brigade. An appli-ance attended the scene around

3.30am and dampened down the area. The pile was broken down with a digger. A fire com-munications spokesman said it happens once or twice a year.

TRUCK HITS TREEA truck hit a tree at the intersection of Quinns Rd and Voss St, on Thursday around 6pm. St John sent an ambulance to the scene and took a man in his 60s to Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department in a serious condition. No other vehicles were involved.

YOUNG SAILOR FUNDEDBryndwr resident Alexandra Nightingale has been granted $400 from the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board to compete in the International Sailing Federation Youth World Championships. Alexandra, 18, is a Burnside High School student and will travel to Lang-kawi, Malaysia, to compete from December 27 to January 3. The funding came from the board’s youth development fund.

STUDENT DISCOUNT The Shirley-Papanui Community Board has written to Environment Canterbury to look into a student discount to use bus services in the city. The board believes there should be incentive to use the services.

44 years at St Andrew’s and never

Hi Alister, tell us about your first day at St Andrew’s College?

It was in 1972 I know

that. I

can’t really remember my first day but I do recall my interview quite clearly. At the time I loved sport. So when Ian Galloway, who was the rector at the time, interviewed me, we didn’t talk as much about teaching as we did about sport.

What was the school like back then?

It was my kind of school, the kids got really involved and were great to deal with. I re-ally enjoyed the students, right through to now they have made the college what it is.

What is your position at the school now?

I am head of operations now which I have been since 1985.

After being at St Andrew’s for 44 years, was there ever a point before now where you wanted to move on?

No, never. I have enjoyed every minute of being here. I didn’t think I would be in educa-tion for as long as I have but I just love it.

If you were to pick a high-light, what would it be?

There have been lots of highlights. In terms of sport I coached the first 15 for seven years and the cricket first 11 for six years. I stopped coaching them around 1987. While I was coaching the first 15 we won three titles in Christchurch. Then we went on a world tour with the first 15 rugby team.

That would have been incredible?

It was in 1986 and 87 where we played games throughout Hong Kong, Wales, England, Scotland and France. It was an amazing trip. Back then we had an exceptionally good team.

Students are always trying it on, what are some of the better excuses have you heard?

I am researching this at the moment for my end of year speech. In recent times, I haven’t been involved in the discipline side of things. I can’t really think of anything that

stands out in that area. The kids have always been good to deal with.

You have a Facebook page dedicated to your time at the school, what do you make of it?

(Laughing) Yeah, they created that a few years ago. They also put something on the old college website and since then I have been inundated with emails from kids I taught wishing me well and thanking me for various things.

How does that make you feel as an educator?

It is pretty humbling isn’t it? It is good to know that you are appreciated, as a teacher you really don’t understand the impact you can have on the students. I taught geography and one year we went to the West Coast for a trip to Blackball. I had a man come up to me and say ‘thank you for saving my life’. He had come to us from another school with a few behaviour issues so I pointed him in the right direction. He reckons I scared the hell out of him but he ended up getting a degree in forestry and working for the Department of Conservation.

A 24-year-old fresh faced teacher walked into St Andrew’s College in 1972 to start his career. Forty-four years later Alister Newton is retiring. He speaks

with Andrew King about touring Europe in the 80s with the school rugby team and how some students dunked him in water

That sort of thing make you feel like you have made a dif-ference.

Are encounters like that a big contributor to why you stayed in education?

Yes it is. At St Andrew’s we have a very strong family bond. We have lots of kids that come through the schools whose parents came here and grand-parents too. That has always been very special to me. The students find it kind of unique that you know who their grand-father is or who their father is.

So you saw a few different generations coming through the school?

Yes definitely. There are some very strong ties to the

school with some families. They all want to be in the same house as the generation before them.

I see there are heaps of pho-tos of you swinging a bat or kicking a ball, are you a guy that just loves to be involved with sport?

Well I am not the most tech-nical guy around, I do not have a Facebook page so I can’t see some of the pictures up there. I used to like getting out with the sports teams. I am a bit old now. I will be looking for my golf clubs soon.

Did you go to St Andrew’s as a student?

No, I’m originally from In-vercargill and went to South-

land Boys’ and went to univer-sity in Dunedin.

Were you inspired as a kid by a certain teacher at school?

I was often inspired by sports coaches so that aspect of the job really appealed to me. I guess being a teacher is some-thing I have always wanted to do.

What has been the biggest change at the school over your career?

It would have to be the school becoming co-ed. In the 80s the concept of the senior school where we had year 12 and 13 girls with the boys was introduced. So we had a situa-tion where we had girls in the prep school and senior school. So we changed to having the whole school co-ed and it has been a master stroke.

Finally there is a photo on the Facebook page with you in the “Drown the Drongo” booth do you remember that?

I do! I remember there were a couple of students standing on the other side and no matter where the ball hit they would drop the water.

Very cheeky, thanks Alister.

Cotswold School pupils will have more unusual swimming costumes in their pool lessons - pyjamas.

The pupils participate in Swimsafe, a city council’s swim education programme for school groups.

For the final two lessons pupils will don their pyjamas, with life jackets, to give them an idea of how it feels in differ-ent conditions.

But until then, the lessons will take on a more traditional approach.

Pupil Joshua Harris’ group used kicking boards to focus on their freestyle arms while swimming lengths.

While Joshua finds it easy to keep afloat he said: “It’s hard

not to bang into people while swimming.”

Sienna Fox counted 19

lengths in her 25 minute swimming lesson doing four lengths of each stroke with a

few extra lengths.“Swimming is fun to do and I

like getting wet,” she said.Jordan Grossie said: “I like

swimming and being in the water.”

His group focused on free-style kicking and swimming on their back and front.

Lessons are based on Swim-ming New Zealand’s founda-tion skills of entry, balance, buoyancy and breathing.

Pupils learn about water safety in all aquatic environ-ments and participate in lessons in inflatable boats and practice wearing life jackets.

Swimsafe gives pupils the opportunity to develop essential water safety and survival skills for life.

All about safe swimming

READY TO GO: Pupils enjoy their swim lessons.

With 13 new cycleways planned to be built around the city, Isle-worth School is prepar-ing its pupils for the future.

Last week the school had 45 year 6 pupils par-ticipate in a week-long cycle safety programme run by the city council.

Deputy principal An-drew Lange said it was

important as pupils mov-ing onto intermediate generally get to school on their own and one of those ways is to cycle.

“They need to know the road rules before they get on them,” he said.

They will spend a day on the courts around the school before moving onto the road to test what they have learnt.

Isleworth pupils gear up for the future

LINED UP: Pupils will spend a day riding in the school before testing their skills on the road.

CYCLE SAFETY: It is vital pupils learn the road rules now before they are on the streets by themselves.

Performers in a Papanui-based dance crew are working up to three jobs to ensure they get to compete in the world champion-ships.

Polaroids, based out of Zion Studios on Sawyers Arms Rd, qualified for the Hip Hop Unite World Championships in Marti-nique, Caribbean, after winning the national competition.

But with winning, comes a hefty price tag to get the crew to the champs.

For all nine to attend it will cost about $54,000 so the crew is teaching at its studio, work-ing their day jobs, studying and finding extra work on the side to pay for the trip.

Polaroids are the only team going from New Zealand and it is the first time a South Island crew has entered the HHUWC open section.

Studio manager Carissa Crow said the dancers would do what-ever it takes with fundraising on top of their hectic daily training schedule.

“The team is now practis-ing daily alongside working or studying full time and teaching classes,” she said.

She said fundraising has been “incredibly hard” but they keep trying.

Some of the fundraising has included Winnie Bagoes pizza nights, movie fundraisers at Hoyts, garage sales, dance workshops, a fundraiser concert, regular lunch and bake sales at events.

They leave for the Caribbean on November 28 giving them plenty of time to shake off the jet lag and practise before the start of the competition on De-cember 3.

They won a recent Kiwibank indep-dance competition which has been a welcome $1500 addi-tion to the fundraising pool.

The Shirley-Papanui Com-munity Board approved $1000 towards their costs at its meeting last Wednesday.

If you want to contribute you can at their give a little page www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/zion2martinique.

JAIMIE KEAY

A foot injury hasn’t stopped Burnside High School student Madi Williams racing towards her dream of representing New Zealand.

Madi finished third at the Auckland Duathlon on November 15, in spite of being diagnosed before the race with plantar fasciitis – inflamation of the tissue on the sole of the foot.

Madi said she had been unable to train in the lead-up to the event and couldn’t even manage to warm up prior to the race start.

The duathlon doubled as a qualification race for NZ age group selection for the world championships next year in Spain. She is currently awaiting confirmation from Triathlon NZ that her effort has secured her a spot on the team.

“When I found out the criteria for selection, I looked up some previous race times and figured I should go for it,” she said. “I have always been quite good at running, and after the Canterbury secondary triathlon was changed to a duathlon, where I got second, I decided to stick with it,” she said.

Madi said her parents have been driving factors in her sporting career to date.

“My mum used to do triathlons, so I have always liked the idea of multi-sport races. The best advice she ever gave me was ‘transitions win races’.

“Dad is a bit of a sports freak, so he has had a lot to do with my competitiveness,” she said.

Madi is now on crutches as a result of the race and said she will be taking a break over the next few weeks. Her next race will be the National Secondary Schools Athletics Championship at the start of December.

PODIUM FINISH: Madi Williams claimed third in the 16-24 age group at the Auckland duathlon.

The longer hours will be extremely handy for customers who now have the opportunity to drop their vehicles in for repairs

before heading to work and can pick them

up at the end of the working day.Brendon and Jo-ann Stevens took over

the business eight years ago. He had worked for the previous owner for five years and purchased the service station when he retired.

Since then, Brendon and his team have been very busy looking after the motoring needs of the people of Burnham and surrounding areas. This includes customers who come from Rolleston, Darfield, Leeston and West Melton, and some of their clientele have been with the business since it began operating 30 years ago.

The workshop at Burnham Auto Services is an extremely busy place. The two full-time mechanics and one part-timer cover all mechanical needs in an efficient, reliable and honest manner, which might explain why customers keep coming back.

“We only repair what needs to be done, and when working on a vehicle always contact the owner, to advise what repairs are needed and the likely cost of those repairs, and ensure they’re happy for us to go ahead,” advises Brendon.

They have recently purchased another scanner, which gives them the technology to accurately diagnose and maintain late model vehicles. To celebrate, Burnham Auto Services is offering a vehicle scan for the special price of only $30, from now until Christmas.

As a Challenge service station, Burnham Auto Services provides a personal full forecourt service for petrol and diesel. They have LPG swap a bottle for gas and sell a range of products in the shop. This includes confectionary, coffees, automotive parts and more. In addition, the team at Burnham Auto Services sell, fit and balance Kumho and Maxxis tyres.

There are also changes in the wind for

Burnham Auto Services, with a wider selection of items planned for the shop. Following on from the recent Lincoln, Tai Tapu and Darfield Challenge renovations, Burnham Motors Challenge upgrade is due within the next six months. This will result in increased fuel storage capacity and a facelift as part of Challenge’s re-imaging so it is no wonder that Brendon and his team are pretty excited.

Burnham Auto Services is located just behind the Burnham Military Camp at 36 Russell Road, Burnham. Phone 03 347 6607, and they will be open over the holiday break.

LONGER HOURS OF TRADING FOR

BURNHAM BUSINESS

The trading hours of Burnham Auto Services have just been extended. They are now open 12 hours a day, from 7am in

the morning until 7pm at night every weekday.

But like eyesight, it can deteriorate over time, lessening that enjoyment and creating frustration, stress and isolation.

Hearing loss can affect people at any age, with 10 per cent of New Zealanders experiencing some form of hearing loss.

A reduction in hearing ability does not usually happen suddenly – it is a gradual process that we don’t realise is happening, although others around us do.

Having difficulty joining in conversations with family and friends or mishearing what people say, needing to turn the television up

Like our eyesight, hearing is one of our most precious assets contributing to our enjoyment of

life and our relationships.

to levels that are uncomfortable for others, or not hearing knocks at the door are all indications our hearing is deteriorating. Tinnitus or ringing in the ears can also be a sign of hearing loss.

While loss of hearing is a natural part of ageing, other factors that affect our hearing include hereditary conditions, exposure to excessive noise over time, such as loud music or machinery, certain medications and head injuries.

Experienced audiologists Carolyn Gordon and Carolyn Till of Gordon and Till Audiology recommend having your hearing checked regularly to maintain your hearing ability.

“Research has shown that if you haven’t had your hearing checked by a professional within the last five years, your risk of mishearing increases by around 23 per cent,” Carolyn Gordon says.

“We have also successfully managed many cases of bothersome tinnitus, and highly recommend hearing aids for people with

tinnitus who also have hearing loss. Up to 70 per cent of people with hearing loss and tinnitus notice a reduction in their tinnitus when fitted with hearing aids.”

Having hearing aids fitted in the early stages of hearing loss will enable you to

continue to enjoy communicating with others. It will make you feel more confident in social situations, enhance your quality of life and improve your outlook for good hearing and understanding over the long term,” says Carolyn Till.

The audiologists point out that today’s technologically advanced

hearing aids are also much smaller and more discreet, so they correct your

hearing without anyone noticing you are wearing them.

Gordon and Till Audiology offers a free 14-day, no-obligation trial of hearing aids. In most instances, government subsidies and other funding is available when purchasing.

To make an appointment, call into 701 Barbadoes St, phone 385 6036 or visit the website www.gtaudiology.co.nz. They also have visiting clinics at Halswell and Leeston.

Detox the way to go The “diet” word is a dirty word. I flinch at the mention of it. It conjures up the thought of sporadic “starva-tion” and people being “hangry” (hungry/angry).

Short-term fixes with extreme dietary fads don’t tend to work. Rather adopting a healthy lifestyle—every day— is more sustainable.

So what’s the perfect formula? This is an often canvassed question and different experts often have different views.

This week I heard the recommendation to “detox” for “optimum health” from Sandra Clair who spoke in Auckland. She’s a Dunedin-based, but Swiss trained, medical herbalist and medical anthropologist who is completing a PhD in health science at the University of Canterbury.

She founded Artemis, a plant medicine company. She doesn’t mean detox as pop-ping pills or having meal replacements that promise unrealistic results. What she means

by a detox is supporting our main cleansing organs, the liver and the kidneys, by mak-ing good health choices.

So what’s the best way to support these organs?

Here are some tips: 1. Don’t collect tox-ins in the first place 2. Buy organic where possible 3. Buy cleaning and personal care products with no “nasties” 4. Eat fresh healthy foods and consume healthy drinks—and avoid fast food 5. Quit smok-ing 6. Avoid heavy metals, pesticides, her-bicides, environmental oestrogen, volatile organic solvents and radiation…

Leaving a legacy and helping to save lives

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in New Zealand and also a major cause of loss of quality of life. By leaving a bequest to the Christchurch Heart Institute, we can work to reduce this number through valuable research into the prediction, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

[Edition datE]2

In the middle of a cold night, Christchurch grandmother Kathleen wakes suddenly and calls out in distress to her husband, she is struggling to breathe and her heart

is racing at a frightening pace.Rushed to the emergency department,

Kathleen is given oxygen and her heart beat stabilised. The following day, as she readies herself for a trip to hospital and a chest x-ray, the same scary symptoms occur and Kathleen is admitted to intensive care.

“It was extremely scary being admitted to intensive care with my heart racing – I thought I was going to die” Kathleen recalls.

During her two-day stay, doctors diagnose Kathleen with heart failure. This is a condition where the heart cannot pump blood the way it should or cannot send blood to the rest of the body with enough force.

The Christchurch Heart Institute was researching the effectiveness of a surgical procedure called renal denervation as a treatment for certain types of heart failure. This trial involved a simple catheter procedure to remove excess nerve signals to and from the kidneys.

Kathleen joined the trial in November 2013 and had the renal denervation procedure done at Christchurch Hospital.

In the years since then, she has been free of any episodes of the ‘terrifying’ racing heart.

“Since taking part in the trial I sleep better knowing that my heart doesn’t race anymore” says Kathleen.

“Although Kathleen attributes the improvement of her condition to the study,

Research trial procedure eases grandmother’s ‘racing heart’ terror

we cannot be certain that her improvement arose from the experimental use of renal denervation, or the changes in her medication as well; and these may be the true cause of her improvements. The benefits or otherwise of renal denervation in heart failure remain uncertain and it requires more research before any routine application in Heart Failure is established” states the Christchurch Heart Institute’s Director, Professor Richards.

Funding for this trial was provided through the Health Research Council and Medtronic

“Since taking part in the trial I sleep better knowing that my heart doesn’t

race anymore” says Kathleen.

Orion is more than halfway through its major $60m Northern Loop project that will provide local customers with a more secure power supply.

A 17km high voltage cable is being laid from Orion’s new Waimakariri Substation near Christchurch Airport to its replacement New Brighton Substation at Rawhiti Domain.

Orion Chief Executive Rob Jamieson says the Northern Loop project is one of Orion’s most significant post-quake developments.

“This is a major network upgrade for a growing part of the city, enabling us to meet increased demand for electricity in the area and improving the robustness of our service for all our urban customers.

“This will enable us to route power more effectively around and across the city. For example if major cables are damaged anywhere in the city, as they were in the eastern suburbs during the February 2011 earthquake, we will have more diverse options for distributing power to the homes and businesses where it is needed.

“This work is essential to our goal of providing our customers with a safe, dependable and cost-effective power supply.”

Mr Jamieson says the Northern Loop is one of the largest cable projects ever undertaken by Orion.

“While this is the fastest rate that we have ever laid high voltage cables, each 900m section still takes 10-12 weeks to complete, from the time the trench is dug until the final restoration work is finished.

“There will be traffic restrictions in some areas. We know this will be an inconvenience for

motorists and for some residents and businesses. That’s also why we want to complete this project as quickly as possible to minimise any disruptions.”

Work began at either end of the cable in June 2015 and the final sections are expected to be joined at Marshland in April 2016.

Orion contractors are currently laying cables from the east along the edge of Bottle Lake Forest at Parklands, and expect to have worked around the south side of the forest by Christmas. The work from the western end has reached the Casebrook/Redwood area and will extend to Main North Road by Christmas.

Keeping you switched onLocal electricity lines company Orion is rebuilding and powering up the network on the northern side of the city.

COMPLETED

COMPLETED BY CHRISTMAS 2015

COMPLETED BY APRIL 2016

For more information about the Northern Loop project, go to oriongroup.co.nz, keyword search Northern Loop, or call Orion on 03 363 9898.

Fact: Orion is New Zealand’s third largest electricity lines company, delivering power to 191,000 homes and businesses between the Rakaia and Waimakariri Rivers.

Fact: Since the Canterbury earthquakes Orion has invested more than $30m per year more than normal to restore the resilience of its network.

Northern Loop Project – In Summary 1. The Northern Loop project is vital to the city and region.

2. It’s one of Orion’s biggest projects and a major priority for the company.

3. It’s a $60million investment

4. It’s really important we stay with the project plan and timelines to minimise disruptions

5. This is about making sure everyone has a safe, secure and consistent supply of electricity.

6. The Orion network suffered extensively in the earthquakes and the whole team is working very hard to make sure communities have a safe and secure supply.
