CHEERS up!

While the Cape enjoys extensive wine tast-ing, Kouga residents can now indulge in aunique beer tasting experience.

Whether you prefer it high on hops or malt, foamy, creamy, flavoured with cherry, lightor dark - the newly opened St Francis BrewingCompany offers unique hand-crafted brews, giving visitors plenty of reasons to toast oneof the most traditional tastes of South Africa.

With thirteen craft beers on tap - rotatingeach week - there is no other place in the Kou-ga, or even the Eastern Cape, where residentsand visitors can find such an extensive rangeof quality beers.

If you are not a beer expert, do not despair, they offer a unique five-glass beer tasting ex-perience for the novice, as well as the expert.

wanted to know how it was made. That curios-ity was answered during one of my travels toAmerica in the 1990s where I worked at abrewery. Back in South Africa, I started brew-ing my own beer at home. Inspired by theAmerican pale ale, the first beer I brewed wasan ale.

“Now, years later, my wife, Linky, and I arethe proud owners of our own brewing compa-ny in St Francis Bay.”

Apart from beer tasting, the St FrancisBrewing Company also offers beer pairingwith food. “It is important that the food com-pliments the beer and vice versa,” says Kabot.

thirst quenching beer like a naked Mexi-can or a pilsner. The perfect match for adelicious chocolate brownie is a stout.”

According to Kabot the next step is to brewtheir own house brand. “I already applied forour brewing licence, and if everything goesaccording to plan, visitors will be able to expe-rience our house brand - Lighthouse Ale,Storm Rider Stout, Wildside Ipa and BeachBlonde - by Easter this year,” says Kabot.

“We are furthermore dreaming of openinga branch in Johannesburg and Cape Town re-spectively. But at the moment, we take everyday as it comes.”

After a serious surf accident at Seal Pointin December 2012 left him with a broken neckand hospitalised for two months, Lance Kabotknew the time was right to invest in his life-long dream - to open his own brewing compa-ny.

“The accident changed my whole life,” saysKabot. “While in hospital, I had a lot of timeto think and decided I should do what I enjoymost - brewing beer and share the tapestry oftastes with others.

“There is much more to beer than the typi-cal lager that is widely known by all South Af-ricans. We specialise in a full-rounded mix-ture of craft beers and style: lager, pilsner, weissbier and ales from around the world in-cluding South Africa, Belgium, America andGermany.”

Where did his passion for beer start? “Likea typical student, I loved drinking beer,” Ka-bot says laughingly. “But more important, I

IMAGINARIUM - a place where you can es-cape reality.

This is exactly what art lovers will experi-ence at the newly opened working art studioat Port St Francis.Twin sisters, Alvira and Alouette Ferreira,

love art. They also love painting. Most of all, they love sharing this passion with others. Thus, Imaginarium was born at the begin-ning of December last year, shortly after theycompleted their studies at the University ofSouth Africa (UNISA).For the twosisters, their love for art started

with the book Drawing on the Right Side ofthe Brain by Bettie Edwards, which formedpart of their home schooling curriculum.“With my mom being a colour analyst, we

grew up with an intense awareness of co-lour,” saysAlvira. “We always enjoyed draw-ing at school, and with that in mind, we at-tended art classes for a year after matric todecide if this is what we really wanted to do.And it was - we enrolled at UNISA as art stu-dents the very next year.”Their artwork focuses on the human form

and portraits; dealing with issues such asidentity, non-verbal communication, humanconnection and the experience of present dayliving.“We spent a lot of time on deciding on the

perfect concept for each artwork. It must bea personal concept and wemust be able to re-late to it,” says Alvira.According to Alvira, her work explores the

connections between people. “These connec-tions can be social or familial, related tophysical space between people or an intangi-ble bond. I paint to maintain the humantouch. It signifies my connection to the per-sons I paint and communicates some of my-

self to the viewer,” she says. “My aim is toengage visually and reward the viewer bypresenting something alluring, engrossingand sometimes surreal. My works are inten-ded to be open-ended scenes or narrativesthat the viewers can think about and take fur-ther in their mind in their own way.”Alouette tries to paint thatwhich cannot be

expressed through words. “My paintings aremypersonal and subjective view of the imme-diate present. My painting style is both ex-pressionistic and impressionistic. One could

say that I amexpressingmy impression of thepresent generation,” says Alouette.“As one of identical twins, I enjoy an in-

tense connection with my sister. Communica-tion and fellowship between us are fluid, un-conscious, easy andmostly non-verbal.We arealso highly conscious of our individual identi-ty. In eery choice we make, we are constantlyasserting what identifies each of us. Becauseof this experience, I am fascinated by humanconnection and identity. Through painting Ihope to make a return to true human connec-

tion with people and true identity.”Apart from unique art pieces, they do com-

missions and offer art workshops aimed atdrawing, painting and creative development. The twins, who are preparing for an exhibi-

tion in Cape Town in May, are dreaming ofopening a studio in Cape Town, and evenoverseas some day.If not artists, Alvira would have ventured

into a career of textile designing, while Alou-ette would have loved to try her hand at inte-rior designing or architecture.

KOUGA’S electoral boundaries are set tochange, with some wards gaining areas andothers losing them, if proposals put forwardare accepted.

The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB)presented their draft plans as published forthe delimitation of the 15 wards in the Kougaat a meeting in Humansdorp on January 28.According to DA councillor Brenton Willi-

ams, themajority of those present agreedwithseven of the wards as proposed by the MDB.“It is apparent that someof thepolitical par-

ties made suggestions with the purpose ofwinning wards in the 2016 municipal elec-tionswithout adhering to theMDB’s legal cri-teria,” says Williams. Most notably, Paradise Beach will form

part ofWard 12 (St Francis Bay) and notWard14 (Aston Bay, MarinaMartinique and TokyoSexwale), and a section of C-Place will formpart of Ocean View, while part of Sea Vistawill move from Ward 12 to Ward 1 (Oyster

Bay) as will Cape St Francis.According to municipal spokesperson Laura-

Leigh Randall, the number and boundaries ofthewards inall themunicipalities country-wideare reviewed before every municipal election.“This process is led nationally by the MDB

and is one of the building blocks of our democ-racy as the residents of each ward will electa councillor to represent them in the Council. The purpose of the review is basically to en-sure that the wards are manageable in sizeand population for a ward councillor to carefor that area effectively.”Williams says: “Further proposals can

MOREEXPERIENCING problems with your liverfunction? Then get NRF ThistleVite - a nutri-tional supplement supporting a healthy liverfunction.

Dealingwithmild liver problembs, Thistle-Vite assists in lipid metabolism and stimula-tion of the liver and is a replacement supple-ment for Herbal Milk Thisle (silymarin)which was removed after being rescheduledas a medicine.ThistleVite contains Alpha Lipoic Acid, a

strong antioxidant and Betaine Anhydrous, which may help to prevent cirrhosis of theliver. Choline Bitatrate contributes to nor-mal lipid metabolism and helps with themaintenance of normal liver function. Whenit is not in perfect working condition or afterover indulgence of food and alcohol, one canfeel liverish and these symptoms can be les-sened by taking ThistleVite capsules.

The liver plays a central role in allmetabol-ic processes in the body. In fat metabolism, the liver cells break down fats and produceenergy. In the metabolism of carbohydrates, the liver helps to ensure that the level of sug-ar in the blood (blood glucose) stays constant. In addition to storing sugar, the liver alsostores vitamins and minerals (iron and cop-per), and releases them into the blood whenneeded. The liver also plays an important role in

the metabolism of proteins where liver cellschange amino acids in foods so that they canbe used to produce energy, make carbohy-drates and fats. Each NRF ThistleVite capsule contains

Choline Anhydrous 100mg, Betaine Bitar-trate 100mg and Alpha Lipoic Acid 50mg. AllNRF health products are manufactured frompure, raw materials and contain FoodMa-trix™ (plant protein and mixed carotenoids),which is unique to its range. Each pack contains 60 capsules (one

month’s supply) and is available from Dis-Chem and Alpha-Pharms.
