The Most Holy Trinity June 11, 2017 — John 3:16-18

God sent his son that the world might be saved through him. I’m not sure how old I was, or how long I gazed up at crucifixes before the thought occurred to me. If God is so invested in roasting sinners in just retribution, as I often heard from religious people when I was growing up, then why in the world would God have sent Jesus to the cross. The cross is pretty extreme, as sacrificial acts go, I think we’d all agree. It’s not a decision one would make lightly or just for show. The cross is a deliberate and costly action that only passionate love makes possible. Most of us aren't in the ballpark of such action, even though we may love some few people a great deal. So God really isn’t in the condemning business, but in the saving business. That’s what the cross says. God wants and wills our rescue from sin and death more than anything. The three-fold activity of creation, redemption, and sanctification revealed in the Trinity is about making salvation all but unavoidable. We can still damn ourselves if we choose, because we’re free. But we’ll have to work awfully hard to get around such love. Spend some time gazing at a cross. What does it teach you about God’s love for you?

Solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad 11 de Junio — Juan 3:16-18

Dios envió a su hijo para que el mundo pudiera ser salvado por Él. No estoy seguro de cuántos años tenía, o cuánto tiempo contemplé los crucifijos antes de que se me ocurriera la idea de que Dios ha invertido mucho en todos los pecadores sin esperar retribución alguna, ya que a menudo recuerdo a las personas religiosas cuando yo estaba creciendo, haciéndose preguntas como ¿Por qué Dios ha enviado a Jesús a la cruz? La cruz es en extremo un sacrificio, y creo que todos estamos de acuerdo. No es una decisión que uno haría a la ligera o simplemente para mostrar. La cruz es una acción deliberada y de costosa acción, que sólo por amor apasionado Dios hace que sea posible. De modo que Dios en realidad no se condena a través de la cruz. Dios lo primero que quiere es rescatarnos del pecado y la muerte más que cualquiera cosa, y por eso acepta ser crucificado. La triple actividad de la Creación, la Redención y la Santificación en la Trinidad, es acerca de la salvación de todos. Podemos nosotros mismos cargar con la pesada cruz sin que Dios permita que sea demasiado para nosotros, y porque estamos libres, vamos a tener que trabajar muy duro para conseguir el camino de la verdad y de la vida. Pasas algún tiempo mirando la Cruz. ¿Qué te enseña el amor de Dios por ti en la Cruz?

YA Bible Study – Tuesday nights from 7:00-8:30 pm. We look at the readings for the upcoming Sunday, reflect and pray together; it’s a great way to prepare for Mass! We meet at Broadway Commons, 1300 Broadway St. NE.

Our Choirs will be on a well deserved summer break. During this time, music for our liturgies will be led by our Cantors and Accompanists. Their role is to “support the singing done by the faithful and to direct the singing of the various hymns, allowing people to sing their proper parts as well as to foster the active participation of the faithful by means of the singing.” (GERM 103)

We are always “a work in progress,” and summer for us is just a breather; a time to relax before we get a running start in late August. Our current Time and Talent survey is a perfect time for you to consider joining our parish Music Ministry. We are always looking for members: singers, instrumentalists and cantors. Give it some thought, let us know you’re interested by checking “Music Ministry” on our Time and Talent survey.
