Simeon came in the Spirit into the temple. There was also prophetess, Anna . . .

Holy families: what are those? We look at our own families and imagine they don’t measure up. We certainly can’t draw a one-to-one correspondence with Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Although on Jesus’ worst day and my sister Ida’s best, I admit there may be a certain affinity.

Another way to consider the holiness in families is what kind of holiness they may inspire or attract. When Joseph and Mary walk into the temple to present Jesus, the event has a magnetic effect. Suddenly Simeon, a devout man of Jerusalem who’s been praying for the salvation of Israel, is prompted by the Spirit to enter the temple. Meanwhile Anna, a prophetess who literally lives in the temple, is attracted to the scene and gives thanks to God. She becomes the earliest preacher of the gospel. You know what they say about birds of a feather. The Spirit has the same effect.

Name people whose holy examples has attracted you. How do you strive to imitate it?

A message from Fr. Heuberger / Mensaje del Padre Heuberger

Our School Principal, Maria Palacio will retire at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. We appreciate her years of service here at St. Vincent de Paul School. We wish her the best. The Principal at Sacred Heart School, Lucy Shawn, will also retire at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. St. Vincent will join with Scared Heart School in the Principal search process. The Department of Catholic Schools, Archdiocese of Portland, will facilitate this process for a single principal to serve both communities of Sacred Heart and St. Vincent de Paul. Both schools are similar in size, we expect this will be a good fit. The data gathered by the strategic planning process recommends that small schools look for transformative organizational structures that will better serve the vitality of the mission of their schools. Sacred Heart shares this vision with St. Vincent de Paul. We will work together to hire a visionary principal who will lead both communities into the future. This principal will be a collaborative, innovative leader, working to develop the faculty at both schools to embrace creative instructional practices. The principal will develop a growth mindset, encouraging collaborative professional learning communities among both the schools.

New Year’s Day, January 1st, 2018 Feast of Mary, Mother of God, is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation. (January 1st is normally a Holy Day of Obligation, except when it falls on a Monday, U.S. Bishops 1991). In the new year we don’t watch over sheep, but we watch over what we are supposed to be watching over. The new year will have much ‘ordinary time’, when we have to be watching over things. The Lord comes into our ordinary circumstances with His presence and love. Feast of the Holy Family December 31st, 2017 The Lord did not simply appear on the face of the earth. He came from a family. Mary and Joseph, His parents, His uncle and aunt Zechariah & Elizabeth, His cousin John the Baptist, His ancestors, and His place of birth. We continue to celebrate Christmas. God bless our families. Lucille Taft Memorial Mass on Friday, January 5th at 11 am at St. Vincent’s. Lucille Taft died on November 5th, 2017, at age 95. Burial has taken place at Belcrest. Granddaughter is Denise Kelly. Luncheon to follow in Reedy Hall. The family is grateful for the prayers and expressions of sympathy.
