Feast of the Transfiguration August 6, 2017 - Matthew 17:1-9

And Jesus was transfigured before them: his face shone like the sun.

The definition of time is the measure of change. If nothing changed, we’d have no sense of time passing at all. Change doesn’t move at a constant pace: sometimes it’s glacially slow, at other times it races into view like a freight train. The transfiguration of Jesus in the eyes of his disciples was an ongoing process of communication and revelation. Each teaching demonstrated his authority. Every miracle was a clue. And then, like a landslide, one afternoon on Mt. Tabor changed the disciples’ perception of Jesus completely.

Not all change is beneficial, and not all that’s revealed is beautiful, unhappily. This week we recall an hour in Hiroshima, a moment in Nagasaki, when history was tragically transformed in a flash of light. The human potential for unfathomable devastation was shown to the world, but this transfiguration of the moral landscape did not glorify God. What occupies the human heart will be revealed, hour by hour. We must take care that what we harbor inside testifies to the goodness of the God we serve.

Recall an event in which you came to “really know” someone: a parent or child, friend or coworker. How did this revelation change the way you’d seen them before?

Fiesta de la Transfiguración 6 de Agosto de 2017 - Mateo 17:1-9

Y Jesús se transfiguró en su presencia, de modo que su rostro se puso resplandeciente como el sol y sus vestidos blancos como la nieve.

La definición del tiempo esta medida del cambio. Si no hay cambio, no tendríamos sentido del paso del tiempo. El cambio no esta a un constante ritmo. A veces es lento. En otras ocasiones, embiste como un tren de carga. La transfiguración de Jesús ante los ojos de sus discípulos fue un proceso continuo de comunicación y revelación. En cada enseñanza demostraba su autoridad. Cada milagro era una señal. Y a continuación, al igual que un deslizamiento, una tarde en el Monte Tabor los discípulos cambiaron la percepción sobre Jesús por completo.

No todos los cambios son beneficioso, y no todo lo revelado es hermoso desgraciadamente. Transfiguration of the Lord August 6th observes this event (Mt 17:1-9) and reminds us that we are not mechanical robots but made in the image and likeness of God.

Pastoral Council on Thursday this week, August 10th at 7 pm in Room C. On agenda is plans for the Parish Feast Day on September 22nd & 23rd. There are two days scheduled for the Feast Day, to include 24-hour adoration, picnic, bi-lingual Mass, music, soccer game, car wash, bingo, and blessing of ministries. Also on the Pastoral Council agenda is the budget for the year, financials, calendar, and commission reports. Any parishioner is welcome to attend. Gracie Rivera is chair.

Elsie Gardner, 95, died on July 31st. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, August 7th at 12 noon at St. Vincent’s. Luncheon to follow Mass. Time for rosary to be announced. Keizer Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Stinnett, 93, died on July 30th. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Vincent’s on Friday, August 11th at 11 am, rosary at 10:30 am. Luncheon to follow Mass. Burial at St. Barbara’s Cemetery. There are three children: Russell, Robert, and Raymond. Golden’s in charge.

May the Lord grant these salvation among God’s people, grant to their loved ones to be blessed in their mourning. The families are grateful for the prayers and expressions of sympathy.

Consejo Pastoral el jueves de esta semana, el 10 de agosto a las 7 pm en la Sala C. En la agenda hay planes para la Fiesta Parroquial del 22 y 23 de Septiembre. Hay dos días programados para el Día de la Fiesta, que incluyen adoración de 24 horas, picnic, Misa bilingüe, música, juego de fútbol, lavado de autos, bingo y bendición de ministerios. También en la agenda del Consejo Pastoral está el presupuesto para el año, los informes financieros, el calendario y los informes de la comisión. Cualquier parroquiano es bienvenido a asistir. Join us Wednesday, August 9: The Serra Club of Salem/Keizer will host seminarian, John Hesla after St. Edward’s evening Mass; St. Edward Catholic Church is located at 5303 River Rd in Keizer. John and his family are converts, and will soon be located at St. Joseph Church for a year. Salad and bread will be served at approximately 6:35 pm in the parish hall; John will speak to us at 7 pm. There will be a short question and answer period (10 minutes) at the end of his talk. We invite all to attend the August 9th Rosary at 5:25 pm, Benediction at 5:45 pm and Mass at 6 pm at St. Edward Church. YA Bible Study – Tuesday nights from 7:00-8:30 pm. We look at the readings for the upcoming Sunday, reflect and pray together. We meet at Broadway Commons—1300 Broadway St. NE – Salem. It’s a great way to prepare for Mass!

Our goal is to provide the very best catechesis to all of our community. Sharing your own faith and the faith of the entire church brings all of us closer together as one community.

Do you have what it takes to be a catechist? Do you love the Catholic Church and it’s rich traditions? Have you been called by God to share your faith story? Can you devote approximately 5 hours a week to this ministry? Would you like to increase your own faith formation?

You do not have to be a “teacher” to be a catechist. We provide you with all of the materials, guidelines and training that you need to be successful. Once each month we meet as group to enrich our own faith formation, discuss any issues, to plan lessons and any special activities. Each catechist must pass a background check and attend the “Called to Protect” training program. If you are bilingual (English/Spanish) that’s a great bonus.

We are currently seeking catechists for all grade levels (First through Eighth) on both Monday and Tuesday Evenings. Our first meeting is Monday, August 7 at 6:30 pm in Reedy Hall.
