Labor Day Whatever our calling and work we should do the best we can do, to make it our purpose to do the best we can do. Work is a human priority, and as well a Christian priority. Society functions well when there are honest and caring people in charge. The Holy Father Pope Francis reminds us that business people are not profiteers. These are different things. The Holy Father speaks of the dignity of work, the value of ‘fatigue and sweat.

First Day of School For some this is a emotional occasion, especially so if it is indeed their first day of school. For veteran teachers and parents it is an occasion for new things and new energy. For all it is an occasion for new things, new energy. It is a renewal, a chance to bring out the old and the new. “Every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings forth from his storeroom both the old and the new.” (Matthew 13:51).

Día del Trabajo Cualquiera que sea nuestra vocación y trabajo deberíamos hacer lo mejor que podemos hacer, para hacer nuestro propósito de hacer lo mejor que podemos hacer. “Whoever wishes to come after me must take up his cross and follow me.” It doesn’t take a genius or guru to recognize that life is hard. But it does take a wise person to know the difference between responsibility shouldering your burden and doing your best to duck out of them. I know a man who abandoned wife and children, quit working, and devoted himself to drinking as a means of escaping the hard realities of life. At the end of his days, he admitted it didn’t work. Sorrow had doffed his steps every hour along the way, and he’d never been free of suffering, as he had wished. It’s hard to love a cross. It’s unhealthy, in fact, to be in love with our pain. But we do make peace with what’s ours to carry. Our loved ones have needs we can’t meet. These are things money can’t buy. We face disappointment, betrayals, and crises thrown on the heap of our present troubles that often feel like the last straw that will bring our forbearance crashing down. To deny the hour of sacrifice and suffering is to risk being “Satan,” the liar and denier of Jesus. The cross is where we learn the true cost of love. Who taught you the most about responsibility bearing a burden?

Our last Catechist and Aide Lesson Planning session will be TUESDAY, September 5 at 6:30 pm in Reedy Hall. We will take a tour of the school and see class locations.

We are in serious need of Catechists for Monday night 5th grade and 7/8th grade, and Tuesday night 2nd grade and 6th grade. Please see Sheila as soon as possible if you are able to help. Come to our meeting on Tuesday!!

We are still looking for an aide for the Pre/K class that meets on Sunday mornings during the 10:15 am Mass. See Sheila for more information. Pre/K classes will begin on Sunday, September 27.

Classes start on Monday, September 11 for Returning Students; and Tuesday, September 12 for Students entering the program for the first time. All students will meet in the school gym. Doors will open at 6:50 pm. There will be a Mandatory parent meeting both evenings.

As Hurricane Harvey continues to devastate the region of the Gulf Coast, the nation once again asks for aid from those who are able to offer it. Today, I ask you to help in two ways. Pray: God of hope and mercy, we lift up to you all victims of Hurricane Harvey, and those

responding with assistance and aid. Protect all who are in any form of danger; provide practical help to all those in need; strengthen the weary; console the grieving and heal the suffering; and bless those engaged in disaster relief efforts with safety and courage. Help all people of goodwill to respond with compassion and generous hearts. Amen. Give: A second collection will be taken up for Hurricane Harvey Relief. According to Archdiocesan Policy, all check should be made out to St. Vincent de Paul Church, make certain you indicate Hurricane Harvey Relief. The Church will submit one check to the Archdiocesan Department of Financial Services. Time is of the essence.

It’s “Back to School” time! May God bless all those returning to school, that the transition from summer vacation to school days is an easy one.

Youth Ministry Registration next weekend! We will be in the gathering area after all the Masses September 9 & 10. Come pick up information for the year & sign up for your registration interview. This includes First Eucharist and Confirmation preparation for high school students.

We expect those planning to receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist and the Sacrament of Confirmation to be actively involved in their Parish community (in addition to regular Mass attendance) for at least one year prior to receiving the Sacrament. Active involvement includes, but is not limited to weekly attendance of one of the following:

High School Youth Nights

Eight Grade Religious Education classes

Liturgical Ministry (Altar Server, choir, lector, usher, etc.)

Youth Ministry Kickoff! September 20th ~ 7 pm to 8:30 pm. We will meet in Reedy Hall to talk about what’s happening this year; bring your entire family to help kickoff our year, refreshments will be served!

MUSIC NOTES: With Summer coming to an end, it’s time for our Music Ministry to

resume rehearsals. You may have thought of singing with one of our groups, this would be a good time to give it a try.

The Ensemble, sings at the 8:15 am Mass, and rehearses every Wednesday afternoon at 3 pm, starting September 20.

The Parish Choir sings at 10:15 am Mass and rehearses each Wednesday from 7 – 8:45 pm. Weekly rehearsals start September 6. All rehearsals are in the Church.

Our Music Ministry always welcome new singers and instrumentalists. If you’re unable to make the first rehearsal, just let us know when to expect you. Or, just show up at the next rehearsal, you will be most welcome, there will always be a space for you.
