About Heat ExchangersOur Product and Activities

A heat exchanger is a piece of equipment built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another. The media may be separated by a solid wall to prevent mixing or they may be in direct contact. They are widely used in space heating, refrig-eration, air conditioning, power plants, chemical plants, petrochemical plants, petroleum refineries, natural gas processing, and sewage treatment.

ULS offers:

Production of all types of tubular heat exchangers in all types of metals for the petroleum, petrochemical, chemical and fertilizer industries, offering high pressure and high temperature vessels.

Up to 200 tons max per unit.

Two Complementary Activites:

We are currently are developing those essential features through a single, global approach, where the safety of employees and plants, as well as customer service and their impressive results, stand as crucial requirements.

ApplicationUse of Heat Exchangers

Heat exchangers are widely used in industry both for cooling and heating large scale industrial processes. The type and size of heat exchanger used can be tailored to suit a process depending on the type of fluid, its phase, temperature, density, viscosity, pressures, chemical composition and various other thermodynamic properties.

In many industrial processes there is waste of energy or a heat stream that is being exhausted, heat exchangers can be used to recover this heat and put it to use by heating a different stream in the process. This practice saves millions of dollars in this industry, as the heat supplied to other streams from the heat exchangers would otherwise come from an external source that is more expensive and more harmful to the environment.

- Waste water treatment- Refrigeration- Wine and beer making- Petroleum refining

Heat exchangers are used in many industries, including:

Types of Heat Exchangers

Most versatile in terms of types of serviceWidely known and understood since it is the most common type Widest range of allowable design pressures and temperatures Rugged mechanical construction - can withstand more abuse (physical and process)

Low maintenance and operating costs (typically 30-50% less than cooling water) Attractive option for locations where cooling water is scarce or expensive to treatWell suited for cooling high temperature process streams (above 80oC when using cooling water should be avoided)

Low initial purchase cost (plate type)Require small footprint for installation and have small volume hold-upTrue countercurrent designs allow significant temperature crosses to be achieved Many different configurations are available (gasketed, semi-welded, welded, spiral)Tend to exhibit lower fouling characteristics due to the high turbulence within the exchangerHigh heat transfer coefficients (3 or more times greater than for shell & tube heat exchangers, due to much higher wall shear stress)

Shell & tube heat exchangers:

Air-cooled heat exchangers:

Compact type heat exchangers:

Selection of Heat Exchangers

Due to the many variables involved, selecting optimal heat exchangers is challenging. To select an appropriate heat exchanger, the system designers would firstly consider the design limitations for each heat exchanger type. Though cost is often the primary criterion, several other selection criteria are important:

- High/low pressure limits- Thermal performance- Temperature ranges- Product mix (liquid/liquid, particulates or high-solids liquid)- Pressure drops across the exchanger- Fluid flow capacity- Cleanability, maintenance and repair- Materials required for construction- Ability and ease of future expansion- Material selection, such as copper, aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys and titanium- Type of duty - Heating of liquids- Evaporation and boiling- Heating of gases and vapors- Cooling of gases and vapors- Condensation- Cooling of liquids- Heating and cooling of slurries

Rehabilitation

Industrial Maintenance

Of petrochemical and energy production units

Performance targets assessmentQuality/Security/Environment

We work on existing plants and provide effective solutions to improve output, reduce energy consumption and pol-luting emissions.

Within the framework of a partnership associating industrial maintenance and shut downs, with the abilities of an upstream engineering, we realize the whole operation of rehabilitation, from studies to installation and tests in order to minimize the production slowdown during the shut downs.

- Diagnosis - Study and rehabilitation projects - Planning with integration of production constraints - Installation - Performance tests

We mainly operate on sites outside France where we often take into account the local competences.

SHUT DOWNS AND SITE WORKS

We lead and realise global interventions during programmed technical shut downs.

Preparation: - Technical evaluation - Mustering of human and technical means - Intervention planning
