The village of Germantown is at oddswith the design for improvements at theintersection of Lannon Road andAppleton Avenue that have been pro-posed by the state Department of Transportation (DOT).

The situation was explained at theDec. 7 Germantown Village Board meet-ing. According to information providedto the board from village staff, the DOT

has jurisdiction over right of way whilethe village has jurisdiction over mainte-

nance for Appleton Avenue. Under aMemorandum of Understanding, the vil-lage had to coordinate with the DOT forthe resurfacing of Appleton Avenue. Ina memo to the board, Village EngineerBrionne Bischke said the DOT proposeda design that would be needed for proj-ects which are funded by the state orthe federal government.

"In my opinion, however, the design

significantly exceeds what would nor-mally be acceptable for municipality

funded projects," Bischke said in thememo. The project will be fundedthrough the village's Tax IncrementalFinance (TIF) district for the area, andBischke stated the DOT design "unnec-essarily stresses the TID's budget for theproject.

During the board meeting, Bischkesaid the DOT design is "the Mercedesversion of what they're looking for."

He said Appleton Avenue is consid-ered a connecting highway, which has

lower standards than those upothe DOT design was based.

In response, village staff re$3,000 to have the R.A. Smith prepare an alternate design whbe presented to DOT staff.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I have seen your dentures on yourwebsite and they look amazing! My problem is that Ihave had my dentures made 3 times and they still hurt

and rock! I have asked the dentist repeatedly to pleasehelp me as I am in pain and must take my dentures out tochew. Can you fix this dentist’s dentures so I don’t haveto pay for another set! Please help me, as I can’t live thisway.

Dear Ann, I am so sorry for your problems. You didnot mention if this was an immediate set of denturesgiven to you the day your other teeth were removed orsimply a replacement for older dentures. There is an artto making dentures and even with tremendous care andskill; denture fabrication is a process that requirespatience. As people live with dentures they experiencecontinued bone loss. There is so much bone loss thatdentures begin to move and may actually slide duringchewing even with using denture adhesives. When teethare removed you actually lose up to 40% of theremaining bone width in the first year after teeth areremoved and you can continue to lose 40-60% of theremaining bone over the next 5 years of denture use!

The solution is to save teeth if possible and if notpractical to place mini-implants or traditional implants topreserve the bone.

Implants preserve bone! That means that over timedentures will not get as loose and you will chew better.

I will get back to your particular problem. Ill-fittingdentures usually require that they be made again fromscratch. It is just too easy to change someone’s dentureand then feel that the changes that were made could havemade your situation worse! So most dentists will want tostart over with new impressions, brand new teeth andmountings to try and remedy the problems you haveexperienced. Trying to make your dentures fit mayactually take longer and cost a tremendous amount of money, which would be wasted if your dentures couldnot be made to be comfortable.

In rare situations, I will work with someone’s olddentures to improve comfort, eliminate denture sores orsimply to create a healthy foundation for making a new

set of dentures. I would have to assess your olddentures to make an evaluation of how close they are toideal and the status of your bite and how your teeth fittogether for optimal chewing. Then I could decide if wecan do anything with your current set of teeth.

We would be happy to perform a second opinion orimplant consultation to our readers! Please call us at414-464-9021 to schedule your visit.

successful program. Steve was an integral partof those accomplishments and a tremendousresource of knowledge, not just on the basket-ball court but on life in general," Dalton said.

Stuve noted that Dalton was a fan of UCLAbasketball Coach John Wooden, and Wooden's"pyramid of success" is given to all members of the team at the beginning of the season.Stuve then went over the values of the base of the pyramid in remembrance of Dalton.

On the value of "industriousness," Stuvenoted that Dalton had detailed practice plans"and an unmatched work ethic. He gave every-thing he had to make sure his players were pre-pared for every game."

On the value of friendship," Stuve said

Dalton "was as reliable and kind-hearted afriend as you will ever come across. He wasgenuine in his actions and he cared deeply forothers."

On the value of loyalty, Stuve said Dalton"gave us complete support to the players andfellow coaches. He worked diligently every dayto make the program as good as it could be."

On the value of cooperation, Stuve saidDalton always did what was best for thegreater good of the program. Dalton, Stuvesaid, was adaptable "and had a keen under-standing of the big picture at all times."

On the value of enthusiasm, Stuve saidDalton "truly enjoyed teaching the game of basketball. He enthusiasm for learning was

inspirational to all of us. Even with 30 years of experience he was still eager to learn newthings and do everything he could be the bestat every facet of coaching."

Stuve noted that over the past several yearsDalton underwent treatment for cancer and hisphysical stature lessened, but Stuve said hispassion for the game and his dedication to theprogram was stronger than ever.

"Steve's legacy is embodied by this year'sprogram motto: 'Whatever you do, work at itwith all your heart,'" Stuve said. "Steve exem-plified this in all he did and for that we areprofoundly and eternally grateful."

Stuve then added: "As I look back onSteve's final season last year, I realize he wasnot dying as much as he was showing us all

how to live -- and that's with integrity, sincer-ity, kindness, generosity, with passion andenthusiasm for all you do."

As Stuve spoke, a photo of Dalton was dis-played on screens behind both baselines of thebasketball court.

    BOYS BASKETBALL

    BY THOMAS J.MCKILLENMANAGING EDITOR

The Germantown boys basketball team wasundefeated after its first six games of the sea-son.

On Dec. 15, Germantown limited Grafton tonine points in the first half on the way to a 72-38 win. Tyler Behrendt led Germantown with14 points while Juwan McCloud added 12

points for the Warhawks. On Dec. 11, a three-point basket by TylerBehrendt gave Germantown a 3-0 lead againstHomestead 12 seconds into the game and theWarhawks never reliquished the lead on theway to a 76-48 win over their North ShoreConference rivals. Germantown held a 25-15lead with 7:17 left before halftime after JuwanMcCloud converted three free throws afterbeing fouled on a three-point basket attempt.Germantown entered halftime with a 15-pointlead and expanded on that lead throughout thesecond half.

McCloud led all scorers with 27 points whileBehrendt added 12 points for Germantown.

    Afterward, Germatown Coach Mark Adams

noted that Homestead kept changing defensesevery time Germantown went down the coachduring the first half and a portion of the sec-ond half, alternating between a few zones anda man-to-man. Adams said he told his team tonot let that bog them down.

"We've got a way to attack no matter whatkind of defense it is, we just have to be patientand realize that we've done this before and

look for the open man and get the open shot,"Adams said.

He added that Germantown was also able toget points off of getting the defensive reboundand pushing the ball up the court beforeHomestead had an opportunity to set up itsdefense.

McCloud added that beating a rival from anadjacent school district is notable.

"It is a rivalry game, so we come into thiswith a little more energy than any other game.So I think we did that today," McCloud said.

In the state Division I coaches poll releasedearly in the week, Germantown was ranked sec-ond, behind defending state champion StevensPoint.
