Germantown School Districtadministrators made it clear last weekthat they were very skeptical of the cur-rent version of what used to be knownas the Smarter Balanced Assessmentand WIsconsin Alternate Assessment.

The tests, which are now called theBadger Exams and Dynamic LearningMaps (DLM), are administered to chil-

dren in grades 3 to 8.The School Board approved a

request Feb. 23 to create a specialnotice to parents informing them thatthey can opt their children out of thetests.

“In our opinion, because of issuesat a state level, this year’s BadgerExams and DLMs are at too heavy aprice to put upon GermantownSchool District students, parents andstaff for any benefits we might reap,”Superintendent Jeff Holmes andDirector of Teaching and LearningBrenda O’Brien stated in a Feb. 19memo to the board.

Holmes recommended that the dis-trict send out a letter to parents of chil-dren at those grade levels providing

them with background information on

the tests and giving them the option toopt out of the tests.

“We are required to provide thetests, but parents have the ability toopt out,” Holmes said.

At the start of the discussion at theboard meeting, Holmes said therequest for the opt out provision isbeing brought to the board ahead ofthe intended schedule.

Holmes said the Badger Examswere supposed to have been comput-

er-adaptive testing “that would haveallowed for our purposes greater useof the data and would have meantmore for out students.”

Holmes said that this year’s testwill be conducted in a traditional teststyle which he said the state has deter-mined was not in the best interests ofstudents.

He also cited the use of the schoolcomputer labs during the testing peri-od, with testing for subject areasoccurring between three hours 30 min-utes and four hours.

In documentation provided to theboard, Holmes and O’Brien also ques-tioned the validity of the tests andwhether the state will sustain fundingof the tests and instead relying on

The partials I have had since December have beenadjusted and fit good but make my mouth just feel souncomfortable some days. The tops make my mouth feel

really full and bulky even though they don’t hurt. I havebeen a lot happier since I got partials as now I am able tosmile and my lips look fuller so my face doesn’t seem todroop. Dear Lisa, I am glad you received partials and areadapting to them! I refer to partial dentures and dentures astemporaries in my practice. That is because I want everypatient to have stable teeth, which ideally stay in yourmouth and don’t have to be removed at night. While noteveryone is a candidate for fixed implant dentistry itcertainly is a great goal.

When people wear partials-even comfortable partials-many things happen. First you lose bone where your backteeth were pulled. The lack of roots in the bone cause thebone to deteriorate and the movement of the partials adds tobone loss. Next, you get expansion of the maxillary sinuses.This is because the roots of the back teeth hold the sinuses

up and when the teeth are removed the sinuses expand in aprocess called pneumatization. Lastly, the clasps of partialsmove when you chew on the false teeth. This movement isaccentuated on the clasped teeth which often become loseand need to be removed at a later date.

So the solution is to have dental implants and fixedbridges. If you have bone loss or the sinuses have expandedyou may require sinus lifts and or bone grafting prior toplacement of implants. Placing implants will stimulate andpreserve bone. Loss of teeth and rubbing on your skin bypartials cause bone loss. So our goal in dentistry is topreserve bone at all costs! Senior Center hosts ‘ Paczkis withthe Germantown Village Board’

A Rockfield Elementary School parentasked the Germantown School Board toaddress class size at the kindergarten level.

Lenny Hanson told the School BoardFeb. 23 that when he registered his childfor kindergarten, there were 23 to 24 stu-dents and that if more students registeredanother teacher would be hired. More stu-dents were added after school started andanother teacher was hired.

Hanson said he another parents wererecommending that when the students moveto first grade, they should be taught bythree teachers in three separate classrooms.

"While it is nice to have that additionalteacher, without having the smaller classsize that mitigates the effectiveness of thatteacher," Hanson said.

Hanson added the district has an effec-

tive literacy program and that is dependenton a teacher knowing each child.

Hanson suggested the board exploreways to open up space at the school foranother class.

Board President Robert Soderberg saidthe board is aware of enrollment issues atthe school and other facilities. He said theboard reviews enrollment figures at everyboard meeting.

"The numbers do not look any better atRockfield next year. We are aware of that,"Soderberg said.

He noted the board was scheduled todiscuss enrollment so the board had "visibil-ity" to various options. Soderberg said hetook the item off the agenda because thatwasn't ready to be presented to the boardat this time.

Soderberg added that last year theboard initiated an enrollment study inresponse to large class sizes and someinstruction occurring in vestibules and hall-ways.

"That's not acceptable to the board.Where we can we have added more tracksand hired more teachers, more classrooms.The operative word there is classrooms, wedon't have any space available. The boardwill be looking at different options becauseI'm not going to accept that for next year,"Soderberg said. "We are going to be mak-

ing some tough decisions parents want to hear."

Soderberg added that the dislaunching a facilities study "at level" that will include a parent suwill be going out "relatively soon."

"We want to find out what thand dads and our guardiansSoderberg said.

Menomonee Falls qualified fivewrestlers for the state individual tournamentduring the Falls sectional Feb. 21.

The state individual wrestling tourna-ment will be held at the Kohl Center inMadison Feb. 26-28. Eric Wunsch won the113 weight class while Bill Holz won the

120 weight class for Menomonee Falls sec-tional titles. Austin Lasanske (106), JakeMcMahon (145) and Tyler Simcock (170)finished second at the sectional to alsoqualify for the state meet.

Wunsch started the day with a forfeitwin and followed that with an 8-3 decisionover Sam Boerner of Cedarburg in the semi-final. He won the 113 title with a pin over

Joey Fischer of Homestead.Holz started the day with a pin over

Tariq Boseman of Milwaukee King and fol-lowed that with a technical fall over JimmyNguyen of Germantown. He won theweight class with a 6-0 win over ColtonRyan of Cedarburg.

Lasanske started the day with a pin over Jared Yoder of Nicolet and followed thatwith a 2-0 win over Cooper Fergus of

Whitefish Bay. He was pinned by ZackSzohr in the title match. McMahon startedthe day with a 6-1 decision over Joey Millerof Pius XI and followed that with a pin overRyan Merkel of Hamilton. He lost to KelvinYde of Arrowhead 7-6 in the title match inan ultimate tie breaker.

“It was the perfect way to start wrap-ping up a senior season. It’s the greatestthing in high school athletics just to make itto state,” McMahon said.

Simcock started the day with a pin overMarquan Holmes of Milwaukee King andfollowed that with a 3-2 decision over BenSciortino of Hamilton. Simcock was pinnedby Ryder Sigler of Cedarburg in the titlematch.

“There’s never any guarantees on thisday. We knew a couple kids had reallygood shots,” Menomonee Falls Coach JimMcMahon said. “There were a lot of 50-50matches out there and I think we did well onthose today. I think our kids came to wrestlepretty well.”

He then added: “Five (qualifiers) is agood number.”

McMahon added he is proud of histeam and hoped that team members whodidn’t qualify for state still had a positiveexperience in the program.

“Even the kids who didn’t qualify for thestate tournament still wrestled well today,”McMahon said.

McMahon also mentioned the parentswho supported their children in the pro-gram and noted how the home gym waspacked for the sectional.

“It’s pretty cool for high schoolwrestling when you get packed gyms,”McMahon said.

Hamilton qualified three wrestlers forstate: John Rybka at 182, Jake Macaluso at220 and Brad Biswell at 285. Rybka start-

ed the day with an 8-2 decision overDarnell Granberry of Wauwatosa and fol-lowed that with a 7-2 decision over MattGottleib of Whitefish Bay. He lost a 7-5decision to Daniel Sorensen of Arrowheadbut secured second place on the wrestle-back with a 10-2 major decision over ChrisAzcueta of Nicolet.

Both teams were scoreless for morethan a minute but then two free throws bySouth’s Emily Schumacher started the sevenpoint run which gave the Blackshirts a 29-20 lead with 2:7 left before halftime.

23 but Marissa Igunbor scored five pointsto start the third quarter to reduce the Southlead to 34-28. The teams traded basketsbefore South extended their lead to 46-36by the end of the third quarter.

Germantown beat North ShoreConference rival Homestead for the secondtime this season Feb. 20, but it likely will notbe the last time the teams will meet this sea-

son.Germantown beat the Highlanders 67-63 to clinch sole possession of the confer-ence title.

“Six in a row, we’ve got the shirts beingmade. Eight out of nine,” GermantownCoach Steve Showalter said afterward.

He added that it was important forGermantown to have the title on its own.

“This is our first goal. This is why we playthe game and this why these guys want to beGermantown Warhawks because of a nightlike this,” Showalter said. “You walk in here(and) for high school basketball, you can’tbeat this atmosphere.”

Homestead lead 15-14 after the firstquarter but a three point basket by JuwanMcCloud gave Germantown a 24-22 leadwith just over four minutes left in the second

quarter. Germantown held a five-point leadat halftime and had a 39-29 lead after BrianStuder converted a three point basket at the6:31 mark of the third quarter.

But Homestead outscored Germantown6-2 over the next several minutes to start acomeback. Homestead took a 49-47 leadwith four seconds left in the quarter. ButMcCloud converted a three point basket anda free throw after being fouled to giveGermantown a 54-53 lead at the 5:41 markof the fourth quarter.

“Those guys are big and long and wewere having trouble scoring around the bas-ket. So we had to figure out some otherthings to do, so were were calling his(McCloud’s) number, he had the green light

to either shoot or pass, and he didgood job with it,” Showalter said.

Germantown held onto the leadof the way, as Kyle Theis, Dwayne

Jr. and Max Keefe conver ted free hold off Homestead. McCloGermantown with 22 points whil
