“Siempre he tenido un poco de miedo y an-gustia cuando asisto a las reuniones de la escuela... Lo que pasa es que no hablo inglés

y creo que ha de ser difícil acercarse con las au-toridades para darles alguna opinión. Pero hones-tamente quiero que esto cambie, porque ellos me están ayudando en la tarea de educar a mis niños”.

Estas fueron las palabras de Ricardo López Hernández, cuyos hijos estudian en las Escuelas Públicas de Omaha (OPS por sus siglas en inglés), al ser cuestionado sobre la comunicación que tenía con sus representantes escolares.

Por este tipo de testimonios, resultó impor-tante que en el sur de la ciudad se haya dado un encuentro “fuera de lo convencional” entre la au-toridad máxima de OPS, el superintendente Mark Evans, y padres de familia, para interactuar fuera del ambiente regular de clase.

El encuentro lo convocó el Centro Latino de la Región Central, conocido en inglés como Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM), estando también invitados Anthony Vargas y Lacey Merica, miem-bros de la junta escolar de consejo de OPS.

Esto ocurrió en la escuela secundaria del sur, lo que propicio un ambiente cordial de comuni-cación, según el LCM.

“Durante la reunión apreciamos que el lider-azgo de OPS tiene muchas ideas para desarrollar, incluyendo el deseo de integrarse mejor con la co-munidad”, comentó Carolina Quezada, directora ejecutiva del LCM, agregando: “Es grato que esto ocurra, porque es importante que la comunidad en general tenga la motivación de conocer al su-perintendente Evans en un ambiente más directo, seguro y de confianza, lo cual permite relaciona-rse mejor y obtener más ideas con relación a la mejor educación de nuestros hijos”.

Profundizando en el tema, expertos en peda-gogía señalan que los padres desempeñan un papel central en asegurarse que sus hijos y todos los niños en general obtengan la educación que necesitan y merecen.

En este sentido, un padre involucrado con sus hijos y en contacto con las autoridades educativas correspondientes, como ocurrió en el evento citado, es un padre participativo y con voz, cuyos actos pos-itivos son la llave para mejorar la calidad educativa.

Desafortunadamente, en la comunidad latina los padres han sido excluidos del sistema edu-cativo ya sea porque ellos mismos se sienten in-timidados por las diferentes características de su situación de inmigrantes y no se involucran, o porque el sistema escolar no tiene mecanismos adecuados para llegar hasta ellos.

Por consiguiente, la convocatoria del LCM resultó certera, atrayendo a familias hispanas de la periferia y a representantes de diversas instancias interesadas en escuchar al liderazgo presente de OPS.

Ahí, el superintendente Evans convivio con más de 50 asistentes y habló sobre seguridad y decer-sión escolar. Incluso emitió opinión, no como au-toridad de OPS, sino como padre de familia, gene-rando un mayor impacto positivo en los presentes.

Evans también abordo el tema de la próxima salida la directora de la secundaria del sur, Cara Riggs, anunciando que concretara acciones para que los padres aporten su opinión durante el pro-ceso de selección del suplente.

“Esto emite un fuerte mensaje de su postura y de lo que podemos esperar de él”, analizó Queza-da, agregando: “Evans está viendo una comuni-dad de padres interesados en el futuro de sus hijos y en lo que ocurren en el distrito escolar... Tengo la esperanza de que sus acciones como Superin-tendente reflejarán su deseo de integrar la voz de nuestras familias”.

Quezada dijo también que continuará realizando estos encuentros, no solo con funcionarios educati-vos, sito de otras instancias de interés popular.

Esto es parte de un ambicioso proyecto fijado por el LCM, el cuál concibe estas reuniones como una primera fase en el trabajo de abogacía comu-nitaria, en el que ellos convocan y ayudar a conc-retar las conversaciones, “para que las familias tengan un espacio seguro y de confianza en el que puedan expresarse abiertamente”.

La segunda etapa, en la que ya exista una rel-ación más estrecha entre padres y líderes, habrá de reunirles con frecuencia, para incluso plantear los proyectos antes de que se ejecuten, conside-rando la opinión de los padres, generándose es-trategias más efectivas.

“Este es un hecho importante para cualquier grupo o líder electo interesado en la voz de las familias al momento de tomar decisiones, sin que el asunto de idioma, educación o nivel social sea una barrera”, dijo Quezada.

Al final del evento, la consejera Lacey Merica anunció una próxima reunión en la escuela Bry-an, en la que utilizará un concepto de comuni-cación semejante al ocurrido.

Por su parte Anthony Vargas hará lo propio, re-alizando juntas comunitarias, para brindar reportes sobre el actual proceso de planificación estratégica en el distrito escolar de Omaha.

Por lo pronto, el reto del LCM ha comenzado de forma positiva, comprometiéndose a no dejar esta reunión como un proyecto único.

En este entendido, el testimonio inicial de Ricardo López refleja el vasto panorama de per-sonas que esperan ser consideradas en estas re-uniones de conexión, lo cual hace necesario un trabajo más intenso, a fin de alcanzar niveles más altos y de que la comunidad entera este dentro del proyecto de comunicación entre padres, lideres y autoridades, que ha fraguado el LCM.

“I always feel a bit scared and anxious when I go to a meeting at school… What happens is that I don’t speak English, and I think it

makes it harder to approach the authorities in or-der to give my opinion on something. I honestly want this to change, because they are helping me with my kids’ education.”

Those were the words of Ricardo Lopez Her-nandez, a parent with kids that study at the Omaha Public Schools (OPS), after being asked about how much he communicates with his school representatives.

Because of this type of testimonials, we can understand the importance of an “out of the ordi-nary” meeting between parents and Superinten-dent Mark Evan, of the OPS, to interact outside of regular school activities.

This meeting took place at the Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM), with the presence of An-thony Vargas and Lacey Merica, members of the School Board of the OPS.

According to the LCM, this event was held at a High School in South Omaha, thus allowing every-one to communicate in a friendly environment.

“During the meeting we acknowledged that the leadership of the OPS has many ideas to develop, including a desire to integrate themselves within the community,” said Carolina Quezada, Execu-tive Director for the LCM, adding: “It is great that this is happening because it’s important that the whole community gets to know Superintendent Evans up-close and personal, all in a safe and healthy environment, thus allowing all to learn more about how to best educated our children.”

Pedagogical experts say that parents have a fun-damental role in making sure that their kids and

that all children in general receive the proper edu-cation they need and deserve.

Because of this, a parent who is involved with their children’s development, and who gets in touch with the corresponding education authorities, as was the case for this event, is a parent that participates and who has a vote, and his positive acts are the key for improving the quality of education.

Unfortunately, parents in the Latino communi-ty have been excluded from the education system either because they feel intimidated due to their situation as immigrants, or because they don’t get involved at all, or due to the fact that the school system does not have the proper mechanisms to reach out to them.

Therefore, the LCM’s call for this event was right on target, bringing Latino families from all over the district, as well as representatives from a diverse range of areas, to listen to the leader of the OPS.

Superintendent Evans met with over 50 partici-pants and talked about school safety and school dropouts. He even presented his opinion, not as someone with the OPS, but as a father and fam-ily man, an action which resonated with those in attendance.

Evans also talked about how Cara Riggs will soon end her run as Principal for South High, announc-ing that certain actions will take place so that parents can express their opinion during the selection pro-cess of the person who will take her place.

“This presents a strong message about his stance and what we can expect from him,” said Quezada, adding: “Evans is aware of a community of parents who are interested in their kids’ future as well as on what goes on in the school district… I have faith in that his actions as Superintendent will reflect his desire to make it so our families can have a voice in all of this.”

Quezada also said that these meetings will con-tinue, not only with education authorities, but with other areas that are of interest to the community.

This is part of an ambitious project from the LCM, a project which considers these meetings as the first phase for working towards community ad-vocacy, and they will convene and help with other meetings “so that families can have access to a safe place they can trust where they can freely express their concerns.”

The second phase, whem a bond has already been established between parents and leaders, will bring them together more frequently, so that they can present and plan projects before they are executed, taking into consideration the opinions of parents in order to create more effective strategies.

“This is very important for any group or elected official who does care about how families feel about the decisions that must be made, thus avoiding any problems that language, education and social level barriers might impose,” said Quezada.

At the end of this event, board member Lacey Merica announced there will be another meeting at Bryan School, where a comparable approach will be used to communicate with the audience.

Anthony Vargas will do something similar while working on community meetings in order to provide reports about the current progress on the strategic planning for the Omaha School District.

For now, the LCM’s challenging journey has start-ed on a positive high, with a commitment for not let-ting this meeting be a one-time deal.

On that note, Ricardo Lopez’s testimony presents a glimpse into the wide range of individuals who hope they are duly considered for these meetings, and there is still a lot of hard work needed in order to reach higher goals so that the whole community can be a part of the LCM’s project for bringing to-gether parents, leaders and authorities.

La residente local de Fremont y co-fun-dadora de la organización Fremont ¡Sí! Krista Anderson ha estado trabajando diligentemente con sus colegas y com-pañeros para difundir información sobre la elección especial en Fremont que se llevara a cabo el 11 de febrero.

El Consejo Municipal de la Ciudad de Fremont va a dar a los residentes la oportunidad de votar sobre las disposiciones de vivienda de la Orde-nanza 5165. La ordenanza requeriría que la gente de Fremont obtenga un permiso de ocupación para las viviendas de la ciudad de Fremont. La ordenanza se aplicaría a cualquier persona que tenga más de dieciocho años de edad y que desea alquilar una unidad de vivienda en la ciudad.

Se requeriría que los inquilinos vayan al Departa-mento de Policía de Fremont, paguen una cuota de cinco dólares y contesten una serie de preguntas con el fin de ser considerados para un permiso. Los solic-itantes estarán obligados a proporcionar su nombre, dirección, fecha de nacimiento y país de ciudadanía. Además, aquellos que buscan un permiso tendrán que proporcionar la dirección de la vivienda que desean alquiler, el nombre y la dirección del propi-etario, junto con la fecha de vigencia del contrato. Cada vez que un inquilino desee cambiar su lugar de residencia se va a requerir un permiso nuevo.

Muchos han asociado la Ordenanza 5165 con la lucha contra la inmigración ilegal. Sin embargo, algunos miembros de la comunidad en Fremont creen que esta ordenanza no va a lograr lo que pre-tendían sus creadores y están instando a un voto de “sí” el 11 de febrero . De acuerdo con la ordenanza cualquier solicitante que no sea un ciudadano de los Estados Unidos o nacional debe proporcionar

un número de identificación que establezca la pres-encia legal de esa persona en los Estados Unidos. Si el solicitante no tiene un número de identificación se les pedirá que declaren eso en su aplicación. Sin embargo, la provisión de vivienda de la Ordenanza 5165 deja claro que le concederá un permiso a cual-quier solicitante que se declare a sí mismo como un ciudadano de los Estados Unidos o nacional y el De-partamento de Policía de Fremont no tomará ningu-na otra acción, de hecho, la licencia se puede emitir de inmediato y sin escrutinio de la información proporcionada. Además, la legislación indica “bajo ningún pretexto puede la ciudad verificar indepen-diente la situación migratoria de cualquier extran-jero.” Por esta razón, Krista y sus colegas creen que esta ordenanza no es la respuesta para Fremont.

“Sabemos que la inmigración ilegal no es un ‘problema’ en Fremont,” dijo Anderson. La activista local también dejó en claro que las familias inmi-grantes en Fremont trabajan duro, son respetuosas con la ley, van a la iglesia y contribuyen a nuestra economía y la diversidad local.” A pesar de que muchos, incluyendo Anderson le dan la bienvenida a los inmigrantes en su comunidad algunos están uti-lizando la Ordenanza 5165 como una oportunidad para asustar a los inmigrantes indocumentados. “Por desgracia, ha habido un montón de retórica negativa que viene de un pequeño grupo de personas que uti-lizan su información errónea para asustar a la gente,” indicó un Anderson decepcionada.

Si la Ordenanza entra en vigor después de la elección especial el próximo mes, Fremont ¡Sí! teme que va a crear una capa innecesaria de bu-rocracia en la Ciudad de Fremont. Lo que algunos no se dan cuenta es que los inmigrantes no serán los únicos a los quienes se les va a requerir que

an illegal immigration ‘problem’ in Fremont,” said Anderson. The local activist also made it clear that immigrant families in Fremont are “hard work-ing, law abiding, church going contributors to our local economy and diversity.” Even though many including Anderson welcome immigrants in their community some are using Ordinance 5165 as an opportunity to scare undocumented immigrants. “Unfortunately, there has been a lot of negative rhet-oric coming from a small group of people, who use their misinformation to frighten people,” indicated a disappointed Anderson.

If the Ordinance goes into effect after the special election next month, Fremont Yes! fears it will cre-ate an unneeded layer of bureaucracy in the City of Fremont. What some do not realize is that immi-grants will not be the only ones required to obtain a license. The housing provisions of Ordinance 5165 will affect each and every persons wishing to rent a dwelling in Fremont. This will include anyone from students to the elderly that reside in nursing homes.

Anderson and colleagues are committed to spreading the right information about the housing provisions of Ordinance 5165 before the contro-versial vote and they are excited about the support

they are receiving from their community. Fremont Yes! has received the support of local community members and even the Ministerial Association, a group of churches from all denominations that have come together to pray for an inclusive Fremont. Lo-cal churches have organized prayer services that will run until through February 10. Anyone interested in participating in the 40 Days of Prayer for Fremont is encouraged to visit fremontyes.org for the event schedule.

Anderson’s group also encourages the residents of Fremont to register to vote in person at the Dodge County Courthouse by the January 31 deadline. Once residents are registered to vote they will have the opportunity to request a ballot by mail by the February 5 deadline. If residents are unsure of how to register or if they need information about their polling place they can contact the Dodge County Voter Registration office in person or by phone.

“Everyone in our community will know someone impacted by this ordinance if it is allowed to go into effect,” said Anderson, adding “the future includes diversity and we want Fremont to be a part of that, it will be good for business and for our community.”

Local Fremont resident and co-founder of the grassroots organization Fremont Yes! Krista Anderson has been working dili-gently with colleagues and fellow support-ers to spread the word about the upcoming special election to be held in Fremont on February 11.

The Fremont City Council will be giving residents an opportunity to vote on the housing provisions of Ordinance 5165. The ordinance would require the people of Fremont to obtain an occupancy permit for dwellings in the City of Fremont. The ordinance would apply to any person of the age of eighteen that wishes to rent a dwelling unit in the city.

Prospective tenants would be required to go to the Fremont Police Department, pay a five dollar fee and answer a series of questions in order to be considered for a permit. Ap-plicants will be required to provide their name, ad-d r e s s , date of birth, a n d

country of citizenship. Additionally, those seeking a permit will have to provide the address of the pro-posed rental premises, the name and address of the landlord along with the effective date of the rental agreement. Every time a tenant wishes to change their residence they will be required to apply for a new permit.

Many have associated Ordinance 5165 with the fight against illegal immigration. However some community members in Fremont believe that this ordinance will not accomplish what its creators in-tended and are urging a ‘yes’ vote on February 11. According to the ordinance any applicant that is not a United States citizen or national must provide an identification number that would establish that person’s lawful presence in the United States. If an

applicant does not have an identification number they will be asked to declare that

on their application. However, the hous-ing provision of Ordinance 5165 makes it clear that any applicant that declares themselves as a United States citizen or national will be granted a permit

and the Fremont Police Depart-ment will not take any further

action, in fact the license can be issued immedi-

ately without scrutiny of the information

provided. Further-more, the legislation

indicates “under no circumstances may the City attempt to independently verify any alien’s immigration sta-tus.” For this reason, Krista and fellow col-

leagues believe this ordinance is not the answer for Fremont.

Menudita y simpática, así es la guapa Tera-pista de Masajes con Licencia Yesenia Os-orio Rojas, quien nació en Ahuachapán

en El Salvador y llegó a Nebraska en 1999: “Siem-pre quise superarme así que me vine a vivir con un tío que vivía en Norfolk”.

Pero a los seis meses de radicar en Estados Uni-dos, su vida cambió completamente pues su tío se mudó a Omaha buscando mejores empleos y sería aquí donde ella también encontraría la manera de salir adelante y formaría una hermosa familia.

“Yese”, como cariñosamente la llaman sus cli-entes, se casó con Brad Goldstrom y es madre de Jacob y Harry: “Fue precisamente cuando mi hijo mayor tenía dos añitos que decidí estudiar una carrera. Siempre quise ayudar a mi gente y al principio pensé que sería enfermera, pero mu-chas situaciones me conmovían mucho, así que reconocí que eso no sería bueno para mi”.

Fue su esposo quien fomentó en Yese el interés por la profesión que ejerce actualmente: “El tenía problemas del cuello y espalda, y en ocasiones me pedía que le diera un masajito. Yo no sabía cómo hacerlo, pero él me mostraba los puntos donde de-bía ejercer presión para calmarle las molestias”.

Un día Yese se animó a solicitar informes so-bre la carrera de Terapista de Masajes con Li-cencia, aunque sin duda demandaría de mucho esfuerzo porque únicamente se ofrecía en inglés: “Me inscribí en algunos cursos de gramática y de escritura en Metro, porque aunque me comuni-caba muy bien, los libros de la carrera traían un

vocabulario diferente. Así que tenía que estudiar muchísimo todos los días porque en ésta profesión se requiere de un estudio muy avanzado del cu-erpo humano, sobre todo de los músculos porque trabajamos con ellos todo el tiempo”.

Orgullosamente Yese se graduó de Omaha School Massage and Health Care en el 2008 y en el 2009 alcanzó la meta de convertirse en empresaria: “Fue gracias al apoyo incondicional de mi esposo que ter-miné mis estudios y abrí mi negocio. Al principio sólo rentaba un cuartito adentro de una estética y apenas si tenía unos 4 clientes al mes. Ahora, por la Gracia de Dios, ya puedo decir que tengo mi spa (inaugurado en septiembre del 2013) con tres hab-itaciones para dar masajes. Estoy feliz porque veo los frutos de mi esfuerzo, ¡y ahora tengo como mínimo 60 clientes mensuales!”.

Aunque Yese lleva algunos años participando en la feria de exhibición del 5 de Mayo, todavía no tiene todos los clientes latinos que quisiera: “Quizás porque la mayoría de los latinos somos más conser-vadores y no nos gusta que nos toquen o nos vean sin ropa. Pero yo siempre digo que un masaje ‘no es un lujo, sino una necesidad’, porque el cuerpo hu-mano es como una máquina, como un carro al que debemos darle buen mantenimiento para que siga funcionando. Si no lo haces, llega a un punto en el que se arruina y ya no se mueve”.

La clientela de Massage by Yese se beneficia de los diversos tipos de masajes terapeúticos que incluyen el relajante masaje con piedras calientes, el masaje sueco, el masaje profundo de los tejidos, la limp-ieza de los oídos con cera y principalmente, la re-flexología: “Enfocándome en los pies y en las manos,

me concentro en tocar los meridianos que tenemos en el cuerpo y que se conectan con todos nuestros órganos. Por lo que trabajando con ciertos puntos clave puedo activar diversas zonas”.

Dolores de cabeza, migraña y las frecuentes mo-lestias de la columna, son algunos de los padeci-mientos aliviados con tales prácticas: “Pero el mayor beneficio del masaje es el mejorar nuestra circu-lación, sobre todo porque en nuestra comunidad latina la mayoría no tomamos suficiente agua, no hacemos ejercicio y no comemos bien”.

Yese también ha estudiado el Masaje Oncológi-co dirigido a personas que sufren de algún tipo de cáncer: “Es impactante lo que el tocar significa. Para quienes tienen cáncer es una bendición porque les brinda fortaleza y les permite relajarse de sus trata-mientos dándoles un momento de paz. Es por ello que en general el masaje nos ayuda no sólo física sino espiritualmente”.

“Lo que más me interesa es ver el cambio en el rostro de las personas después de que reciben un masaje – concluyó Yese -, por eso quiero que los latinos se animen a probarlo, ya que además hablo español y puedo aclarar sus dudas”.

por la oficina de la Unión Americana de Libertades Civiles de Nebraska (ACLU-NE) indicó que un juez del Tribunal Regional de Nebraska decidió que una demanda contra el Gobernador Heineman y el Departamento de Vehículos Motorizados de Nebraska seguirá adelante. La organización ACLU presentó la demanda contra Heineman y el departa-mento de vehículos de motor del estado en nombre de cuatro Soñadores. ACLU Lawsuit AdvancesA January 23 press release from the American

Civil Liberties Union Nebraska (ACLU-NE) office indicated that a Nebraska District Court judge has ruled that a lawsuit against Governor Heineman and the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles will be allowed to go forward. The ACLU filed the lawsuit against Heineman and the state’s department of motor vehicles on behalf of four DREAMer’s. The ACLU points out that the DMV in Nebraska says these DACA recipients are “categorically ineligible for a Nebraska driver’s license,” in fact the ACLU adds that “Nebraska remains the only state in the country that has adopted the REAL ID Act that is denying licenses to DACA recipients. ACLU-NE Legal Director, Amy Miller, pointed out that it is “senseless to withhold from them the means to advance in school, earn a living and contribute to our communities.”

President Obama’s Weekly AddressPresident Obama January 25 address focused

on taking action to end sexual assault. According to Obama his administration has focused on efforts to stop sexual assault crimes. Just recently the President said he took another important step to help put an end to these crimes. “I’ve created the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault,” adding “we’re going to help schools do a better job of preventing and respond-ing to sexual assault on their campuses.” Obama pointed out that his administration is very com-mitted to strengthening the U.S criminal justice system so perpetrators are brought to justice. The President made it clear that it is not solely the job of the government, but everyone needs to do their part to make sure we stop these crimes.

Small and nice perfectly describes Yesenia Osorio Rojas, a Licensed Massage Therapist born in Ahuachapan, in El Salvador, who ar-

rived at Nebraska in 1999: “I always wanted to do something with my life, which is why I came here with my uncle who lived at Norfolk.”

After living in the United States for six months, her life completely changed when her uncle moved to Omaha in search of better jobs, and it would be here where she’d also find a way to thrive and start a beautiful family.

“Yese,” as she is affectionately called by her clients, married Brad Goldstrom, and has two sons - Jacob and Harry: “It was when my oldest boy was two years old that I decided to study to have a career. I always wanted to help people, and at first I thought I’d become a nurse, but sev-eral situations moved me too much, so I realized it wouldn’t be a good fit for me.”

It was her husband who encouraged Yese to move towards her current profession: “He was having some neck and back problems, and he sometimes asked me to give him a massage. I didn’t know how to do it, but he would show me the places where I should put some extra pressure in order to ease the pain”.

One day Yese finally decided to request some information for becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist, a goal that would certainly require a huge effort since courses were only available in English: “I signed up for some grammar and writ-

ing classes over at Metro because even though I could communicate very well, all books were writ-ten in a different way. Therefore, I had to study hard every single day because, in this career, you really need to study the human body, specifically the muscles on which we work the whole time.”

Yese proudly graduated from Omaha School of Massage and Health Care in 2008, and in 2009 she achieved her goal of becoming an entrepreneur: “It was thanks to the unconditional support of my hus-band that I managed to finish school and open up my own business. At first I only rented a small room inside of a beauty parlor, and I barely had 4 clients each month. Now, I can say I have my very own spa (which opened during September, 2013) with three rooms for massages. I’m very happy because I can fi-nally experience all the benefits from my hard work, and now I have at least 60 clients each month!”

Even though Yese has been part of the 5 de Mayo fair, she still doesn’t have as many Latino cli-ents as she’d want: “Maybe because us Latinos, as a whole, we are more conservative and don’t like to be touched or seen without clothes. But I always say that a massage ‘is not a luxury, it’s a necessity,’ because the human body is like a machine, like a car that requires good maintenance to continue working. It this isn’t done, it reaches a moment when it breaks, and it can’t move.”

All clients of Massage by Yese reap the benefits of a wide range of therapeutic massages, such as a relaxing hot stones massage, a Swedish massage, a deep tissue massage, or even having their ears cleaned with a special wax, but the main one is re-

flexology: By focusing on the feet and hands, I can concentrate on touching the meridians we have in our body, which are connected to our body or-gans. That way we can work on specific key spots to activate a variety of zones.”

Some of the issues that can be solved by this are headaches, migraines and back problems: “But the biggest benefit from a massage is improving our blood circulation, especially in our Latino com-munity where most people don’t drink enough water, exercise or eat healthy.”

For those who have cancer, it is a blessing because it provides them with the strength they need, and it allows them to relax for their treatments by bringing them peace of mind.
