MOUNT DRUITT STAGE 2 OFF TO A

GREAT START: We marked the start

of Stage 2 expansion at Mount Druitt

Hospital with a smoking ceremony on

the new community dialysis centre

site this week.

Local Elder Uncle Greg Simms

welcomed staff, patients, Elders and

community members before

performing the traditional smoking

ceremony to cleanse the site.

After inviting staff and patients to

wash themselves in the cleansing

smoke, Uncle Greg was joined by

local Elder Christine Foreshew to

gather soil from the site. The soil will

be used for a special art project for

the new community dialysis centre.

Stage 2 Also includes Drug Health

expansion now underway at the

Railway Street end of the site.

Recovery, operating theatre and MRI

works start next year. The projects

will be completed by mid 2017.

COMMON GROUND

Dialysis treatment will be much closer to home for local renal patients

Lawrence, Evan, Kaoline, and Robert (pictured above and below with Elder

Christine Foreshew, and Uncle Greg).

The new facility will help us better manage the increasing demand for dialysis and

having the service closer to home will help reduce time and money costs of

travelling to Blacktown or Nepean for treatment three times a week.

The new centre will have the capacity to provide more than 150 dialysis sessions a

week, with each session taking about six hours and most patients attending three

times a week.

After the smoking ceremony, our Elders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff

and community members, renal patients and hospital staff carefully collected

some soil from the site to create a future art project for the dialysis centre.

The beautiful stoneware pot used to

collect the soil from Mount Druitt was

handmade by acclaimed artist

Malcolm Cooke (above) using

Australian materials.

project.

DIALYSIS CENTRE COMMUNITY WELCOME

On Thursday 1 December, we also hosted a community welcome at

our new Regional Dialysis Centre at Blacktown Hospital.

Abut 30 staff and patients joined local Elder Uncle Greg, and

members of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and

community, to take part in a traditional Aboriginal smoking

ceremony. The welcome and ceremony was followed by a bit of

fun with a huge red ribbon. Red was chosen for the ribbon because

it is associated with kidney health, awareness and fundraising.
