THE ONLY WAY IS UP: Visitors in the new hospital building
at Blacktown are four times more likely to use the stairs
thanks to a simple design initiative suggested by our Health
Promotion Unit.
In the new building, we have open, light-filled stairs located
directly next to the lift bays, but strategically-placed ‘stair
prompt signage’ reminders before the lift bays seems to be
having the desired effect!
A recent study by Western Sydney University students
revealed that this simple change also contributed to 61% of
staff choosing the stairs over the lifts.
The change has been so successful that it’s being repeated
in the new building.
Thanks to Elizabeth Leece and the Health Promotion team
and the Centre for Population Health for the pointing us in
the right direction!
BREATH OF FRESH AIR Patients with severe respiratory illnesses can now be cared for on
a ward instead of intensive care thanks to a new initiative from
our respiratory team.
“We designed our new ward to accommodate some types of
patients who would previously have been restricted to intensive
care,” explained respiratory physician Dr Mohan Nagarajah.
“Patients are still getting the close observation and treatment,
but in a more normalised ward setting so it’s less confronting.
“There are also significant advantages for staff with more
opportunities for professional development and training for
nurses, doctors and allied health professionals," Mohan said.
The new ward design accommodates BiPAP machines for non-
invasive ventilation, high flow oxygen therapy, telemetry, and
blood gas sampling, and nurses stations were designed to allow
maximum patient observation.
"The change allows us to expedite transfers out of intensive care
and improve the patient experience," Mohan said.
"It's been a real collaboration between our doctors, nurses, allied
health professionals and administrative teams, and we're already
seeing the benefits to patients."

PLAYING NICE: Our B2Hub teams attended an etiquette
session this week to grapple with the top office dilemmas
and set some ground rules for working in flexible spaces
in the future. Part of this week’s task involved matching
their actual work (answering emails, going to meetings
and having confidential discussions) with an appropriate
B2Hub workspace. There was a lot of discussion and
laughter, lots of thoughtful negotiation and a general
consensus about smelly lunches (best saved for Hospital
Street). Above, Xioli, Leza-Maree, Sue-Anne and Sonia
complete the workpoints activity.

B47 In-Centre Haemodialysis Ward
Blacktown Hospital | BMDH Project Stage 2
Blacktown Hospital will open a new in-centre
haemodialysis unit in March for people who need
to continue their regular dialysis treatments while
they are in-patients or outpatients in our hospital.
The existing service on B28 will relocate from the
current ward into a newly refurbished space called
B47 In-Centre Haemodialysis, with more
treatment areas and a bright, welcoming, patient-
friendly design.
If you are a dialysis patient or carer, your
healthcare team will advise you about
arrangements for the new ward.
B47 In-centre Haemodialysis is part of our $700
million Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals
Expansion Project (BMDH Project), providing more
services closer to home for our local community.
B47 In-Centre Haemodialysis opens March 2017
We are starting work on our new car park extension this year and things have changed around
the P1 multi-storey car park.
There will be some inconvenience from time to time - we appreciate your patience during
minor delays.
On the bright side, we will have more car spaces by the end of the year.
Thanks for your understanding.
